I got news of a potentially HUGE anime sale scheduled to start at approximately 460 Best Buy stores starting on 3/1/09 through 3/21/09.

ICv2 has obtained a list of the Best Buy stores that will be running 50% off close-out sales on anime beginning March 1st (see “Best Buy’s New Anime Strategy”) (article link is at bottom of this post). I don't know for sure, but it wouldn't make business sense to get more stock in just to sell it at a loss. I was under the understanding that the sale is to reduce existing stock at these stores.
 
I spent about an hour and a half chatting with three employees at the Sandy, UT store this morning and none of them knew that this was store-specific. They understood it included all of the stores.

They did suggest the return/rebuy strategy from a store not running the promo to one that is.

They also confirmed that they will continue to receive new anime throughout the month. I'm not entirely sure how they confirmed this, but one of the guys left for a few minutes and came back with that news as well as a few of the titles that were coming in (Howl's Moving Castle is the only one I recall).
 
I feel pretty bad right now also. I really need to go back, but I know I'll just be denied for the blu-ray movies again. That's the main part I'm upset about. I just need to somehow get them. Plus after reading everyone elses posts, I think I should have looked for more. Heh. We'll see.

I hope it was epic anime! It'll probably make me feel bad for limiting myself to $400. Of course, if for some reason one of my stores gets Berserk or FMA Season 2 on Tuesday, I'll pick those up, and probably get Neon Genesis Evangelion if it's still there. I guess I won't be getting that Resident Evil 5 Elite bundle afterall....

I picked up the Neon Genesis Evangelion Platinum Box set for $29, and Yu Yu Hakusho Seasons 1-3 for $12.50 each yesterday.

Today I drove about 30 miles out of the way to get YYH Season 4 @ 12.50 also... none of the close stores had it in stock :(
 
I've been looking for "5 centimeters per second" here in so cal with no luck. Would someone pick that up for me for cash or trade?

The new box set comes out March 17th. When I look at my stores availability it says "Available," so I'm guessing they will have it out by then?


Also, when I do an instore pickup, do I have to return the item first? I think it makes you pay beforehand and then you just pick it up in the store, but online you pay full price...
 
Good news, check your store after thursday afternoons again. Steve at the store in avon ohio, a manager said that the distribution centers were sending out another load of anime to his store on thursday ad told me to come back then and double check for things that they currently didnt have in. I said even though this is like clearance? he said yeah. I said is all stores getting more he said MOST.
Hope this cheers alo of folks up ... and I also hope he is right and not some douchbag just trying to get me to leave the store and quit looking at all that beautiful anime hehe
 
Ahh thanks knightbeauchamp, that's relevant to my interests. I highly doubt every store has the same receiving schedule though, especially across the country where I'm at. I'm going to check daily or at least every other day though just in case.

Oh wow. I guess it's too much to hope for to magically see the non-ugly Evangelion box set pop up at my Best Buy (call me stupid, but I don't want that fat DVD econo-pack). I'll visit anyways over the weekend and see if there's anything new that catches my eye.

There are quite a few titles that don't ring up half off, including all the blu-ray titles. They WILL ADJUST THE PRICE though, as the signs say "50% off all anime," no stipulations, which is pretty much impossible to argue with.

I totally shouldn't spend as much as I plan to spend today on anime. I plan on going to an anime conference in May and need money for it! Ahhhhh, I can't resist though.

Got the last 5 Centimets Per Second. I'm a bit disturbed at myself that I spent 11.00 on 65 minutes of Anime, but something tells me it's going to be very much worth it.

Also picked up Cowboy Bebop Remix (with all of these releases, is Remix the best release of Cowboy Bebop to have?) a mismarked Black Lagoon (marked at 17.99, which I managed to get overridden to 9.00) Final Fantasy Unlimited, Witchblade (which I hope my girlfriends thinks I didn't get just for the tits), Inuyasha season 5 (for my GF) Case Closed season 3 (Season 1 or 2 were nowhere to be found) Samurai 7 (DVD version) and the first 13 episodes of the Mega Man anime.

Speaking of the Mega Man anime, it was in a section of anime that was sanctioned "Not valid for 50% off" along with, what basically appeared to be the "cheap" anime like Inuyasha season 2 (19.99 after discount) and others I can't remember now. Oddly enough, indeed the Mega Man did not ring up half off. I basically said, "C'mon!!" and they gave me the 50% off. Speaking of which, the Best Buy cashier was cool as hell... could very well be a CAG.

Anyway, given the selection I picked up, and how I wouldn't mind dropping another 60 bucks or so, is there any other well priced Anime that Best Buy sells that I shouldn't be without?

EDIT: I saw Fruits Basket. Should I have gotten that?

Ordered some more from the kiosk today. I'm done getting anymore anime, despite still not picking up death note.
 
While getting Wonder Woman today I ended up spending $250.00!
I could not believe there was 15 people before me, including really hot harley guy, I thought this started Sunday morning.
I ended up with Naruto Uncut, One Piece Uncut box sets, Elfen Lied, Girl who leapt thru time, Kashimashi complete, nighthead,witchblade complete, this ugly yet beautiful world tin, pet shop of horrors and conan.
Hopefully I didnt pick anything that completely and totally sucked with 90 percent filler but if so maybe they will have resell value later. The Harley guy told me those Naruto Volume 1 and 2 uncuts are really hard to find to start that series.

Naruto Volume 1 and 2 are still easy to find unless you want the Special Edition.

I'd suggest Fruits Basket for a nice light romantic comedy. Also highly suggest My-Hime.

Biggest suggestion I can give you is to return that copy of Final Fantasy Unlimited before you subject yourself to its horror.
 
If you're in the area, check out the Best Buy in Tarentum/Pittsburgh Mills. They have the best selection I've seen for this sale. I managed to pick up Ergo Proxy complete, Fate stay night complete, Tsubasa season one, Basilisk complete, Black Lagoon season one, Black Blood Brothers complete, Coyote Ragtime Show complete, and Fruits Basket complete.

Hmm, light romantic comedy. I knew that's what I'd be getting into when I asked for a recommendation on it. But what about badass action crap? Also, what about depressing stuff? Real depressing. Like Grave of the Fireflies depressing. I want to cry, dammit. And my girlfriend too, even though she will loathe me for making her cry.

Also, I looked up Final Fantasy Unlimited. Um, wow. Blind purchase FTL. I'll return that beastly fart pile for something better-- any ideas for a 20 dollar boxset? I was thinking about Coyote Ragtime Show, but it's only 12 episodes...

You can pick up Saint Seiya if you don't mind something from the late 80s. Great soundtrack, and great action and animation for its time. It is really popular in Brazil and Spanish speaking countries but never catch on in the US.

The downside is that they only release the first 60 episodes and it is in the middle of the arc. Also I am not sure if ADV or anyone is going to be able to release the whole series.
 
Hmmm... I'll look for Saint Seiya. I think I saw that, but I'm not sure.

Does Best Buy sell Grave of the Fireflies? It was one of my first anime DVDs I ever bought, which I sold stupidly. I can't find it on their site.
 
I went yesterday to a store about a half hour out of the way, it was worth it though. I got:

This morning I was seriously thinking about going back for the complete Mushishi series and Le Chevalier d'Eon, but I eventually decided not to even though I'd only be paying mid $20s for each of them. I've spent enough I think. (I'm not big into anime AT ALL, so stuff like Cowboy Bebop, FMA, etc are the only ones I watch)

Thankfully a closer store had a copy of Bludgeoning Angel to exchange my Disc-2-only copy so I didn't have to drive over to the next town.

I tried to have customer service look up 5 Centimeters per Second, but they weren't having luck. Is it listed as "5" or "Five?" "Centimeters" or "CM?" Etc.

Or better yet, what's the SKU and/or UPC number?

Have any of the Athens, GA, CAGers seen if that store has a sale, or not? (I know its not on the list, but that list also is not complete right)
 
I picked up Ghost in the Shell:SAC (complete series), Samurai 7 (complete series) and Bleach: Memories of Nobody for like $50 bucks at the BB in Huntington, NY. The Bleach movie was listed as $28 but then it ran up at $10 so i made out even better than 50% off.

I may try to check out the Commack, NY store.
