A Heartfelt HELLO to all my friends at CheapAssGamer!

I got news of a potentially HUGE anime sale scheduled to start at approximately 460 Best Buy stores starting on 3/1/09 through 3/21/09.

Here's the listing of the 400+ stores scheduled to run this sale:

From ICV2.com news:

"Best Buy’s Anime Close-out Stores March 1st to 21st

Published: 02/20/2009, Last Updated: 02/23/2009 04:45am

ICv2 has obtained a list of the Best Buy stores that will be running 50% off close-out sales on anime beginning March 1st (see “Best Buy’s New Anime Strategy”) (article link is at bottom of this post). The sale will run from March 1st to March 21st and allow these 460+ stores to reduce their SKU count dramatically, as part of the chain’s move to concentrate its anime efforts in stores where anime has performed best.

Here's a comprehensive article on Best Buy's new ANIME Strategy as mentioned at the top of this thread:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-02-20/best-buy-to-change-dvd-strategy

Finalized list: here.

I've got 2 stores in my area so hopefully I'll find some stuff of interest.

Also, animaniac provided this coupon which can be used with this sale:

What would happen after March 21? Would they go to 75% off? or would they start sending stuff back to the wherehouse?

[quote name='Friend of Sonic']Hmm, light romantic comedy. I knew that's what I'd be getting into when I asked for a recommendation on it. But what about badass action crap? Also, what about depressing stuff? Real depressing. Like Grave of the Fireflies depressing. I want to cry, dammit. And my girlfriend too, even though she will loathe me for making her cry.

Also, I looked up Final Fantasy Unlimited. Um, wow. Blind purchase FTL. I'll return that beastly fart pile for something better-- any ideas for a 20 dollar boxset? I was thinking about Coyote Ragtime Show, but it's only 12 episodes...[/quote]

Fate Stay/Night is right up your alley for badass action, budding romance, sprinkles of funny, and you might even cry at the end too. The music is a great mood setter throughout. I loved every minute.

Some have complained about the main character Shiro's personality faults, but I didn't have any issues and it fit with what happens over the course of the series. Get it.

[quote name='dafunkk12']Thankfully a closer store had a copy of Bludgeoning Angel to exchange my Disc-2-only copy so I didn't have to drive over to the next town.

I tried to have customer service look up 5 Centimeters per Second, but they weren't having luck. Is it listed as "5" or "Five?" "Centimeters" or "CM?" Etc.

Or better yet, what's the SKU and/or UPC number?[/quote]
I think that title is out of print. They likely won't carry it. I think Funi owns it now and will eventually anounce it. It was redubbed by Bang Zoom studio and that is who funi usually uses for dubs. They aquired most every other Geneon and ADV title.

[quote name='Chris S']You, me, Rave Child, and a ton of other people are looking for it too. Damn good movie, wish I would have bought it when I had the chance years ago.[/quote]

I must not understand the want. Took a peek at the first Cherry Blossom chapter after all the mentions here, and found it to be rather boring. The choppy pacing and dialogue wasn't my thing. Some call it poetic. It looked pretty though. Meh.

Maybe good for a rental when nothing else is in my queue so I can watch the rest of the film.

[quote name='mjc819']Whats all this about ordering from kiosks? Is that lingo for ordering online for store pickup?[/quote]

Credit to WTK at DVDtalk. http://forum.dvdtalk.com/9298123-post3.html

Code:
Q: What is the Best Buy kiosk?
A: It's a customer computer kiosk/station inside each Best Buy store.

Q: How does the kiosk work and what does it do?
A: The most useful function of the kiosk is the access to BestBuy.com with store-loaded price. This gives you an option to purchase select products that your local stores may no longer carry. You can also do price checks on the kiosk by keying the product title or the product SKU without going to the checkout area. Another newer feature gives you an option to check on up-to-date on-hand counts (if the item is still listed on BestBuy.com) for product in the store you are at and the surrounding stores.

Q: Where is it located inside the store?
A: It's usually located near the DVD/Video Game/Music section. There is usually at least one if not two or more kiosks in each store.

Q: Weren't some legal issues concerning with pricing with this whole kiosk business in the past?
A: Yes, but it should pose no problem now. All kiosk now display this message, "This kiosk displays Best Buy's lowest price available between this store and its online national website prices excluding promotions and clearance and outlet center pricing which can differ between stores and online. Please see your sales associate if you have questions!"

Q: How does the ordering process work?
A: Older kiosk system: 1) Click on the lower left weblink and it will lead you to BestBuy.com. 2) Shop as you would outside the store. 3) You don't need to have an account to shop, but it is recommended. 4) Once you are ready to checkout, be sure to enter your Reward Zone account number if you have one. 5) The order will then be deliver to your designated address. 6) Once the order is placed, certain kiosk offers you the option to print out your order.
A: Newer kiosk system (new/remodeled stores): 1) Type in the search box on the screen and it will lead you to BestBuy.com 2) Follow the same steps as above

Q: What kind of payments are acceptable?
A: All payments accepted from BestBuy.com outside the store will be accepted for the kiosk as well. Gift cards are also an acceptable payement.

Q: Can I order backordered products?
A: You can still place an order as long as it's not sold out. Since most heavily-discounted kiosk products tend to be clearanced/discontinued, backordered orders may not always be fulfilled.

Q: I'm at the customer kiosk, but the product pricing is not the same. What's going on?
A: All Best Buy (B&M) or customer kiosk pricing can be regional, so YMMV. However it a few instances the store-loaded webpage may display the incorrect pricing (from the likes of pricing accessed from BestBuy.com, outside the store). Often times, if proceed to the product webpage and/or place the item in your shopping cart, the correct discounted pricing will show up. It's one of the known glitches that hasn't been fixed since they overhauled their kiosk system.

Good things for pre-order are Berserk ($15) and Princess Tutu ($17).

Quite a bit of pre-orders aren't 50% off though.

So basically, if the store you're at is out of something you want you can use the kiosk to order it and have it get sent to your house? How does this work with the anime titles, since they're half off? Is the discount applied instantly?

Went to the Best Buy in Doral Fl, and grabbed Ghost in the Shell SAC 2nd Gig, the complete second series in the collector's case for 24.99, the clerk said it didn't show the 50 percent off, and halved that for us, so we walked out with that, and Mezzo the complete series for 29 and change.

They still had a ton of anime in stock.

[quote name='detectiveconan16']Anyone seen Overman King Gainer? I know there's a "Anime Legends" collection out there.[/quote]

I've seen the first few episodes. It seems interesting.

[quote name='madara']While getting Wonder Woman today I ended up spending $250.00!
[/quote]

I got Wonder Woman today too.

I ended up going back to the Christiansburg, VA Best Buy and got....

The Girl Who Lept Through Time complete $17.99
Vexille Special Edition $9.99
Neon Genesis Evangelion Complete Platinum Collection $39.99

I'm glad I went back because they only had one copy of all of those left except Vexille.

[quote name='62t']anyone tried in stock pick up?[/QUOTE]

Yes, I ordered :br: Akira online and the cashier adjusted the price for me at the counter, worked like a charm.

BTW, is :br: Freedom worth picking up for $50??

[quote name='MikeyRuin']I picked up Ghost in the Shell:SAC (complete series), Samurai 7 (complete series) and Bleach: Memories of Nobody for like $50 bucks at the BB in Huntington, NY. The Bleach movie was listed as $28 but then it ran up at $10 so i made out even better than 50% off.

I may try to check out the Commack, NY store.[/quote]

Ah, so you were the one who wrapped up most of the other good stuff still in Huntington. Nice grabs!

I wrapped up there with Code Geass Box 2, otherwise that was about it. Let us know what you end up finding in Commack. If I have time (and energy) after work tomorrow I might check out the Levittown one since it should only be around 15 minutes away.

[quote name='Gden']Have any of the Athens, GA, CAGers seen if that store has a sale, or not? (I know its not on the list, but that list also is not complete right)[/quote]
[quote name='speedy1961']
Finalized list: here.
[/quote]
So my guess is...Doubtful.

A local Best Buy put Robotech: Protoculture Collection on hold for me. After discount, it'd be 37.50+tax. It's a 21 disc set, which seems to be a fantastic price-- should I bite?

Like you said it looks like a fantastic price, I haven't seen the show myself though.

my only complain is that it is dub only, but if you dont care go for it

Not only have I been away all weekend, but my laptop is broken too! Urrgh... Anyways, here's what I managed to pick up on Sunday:

Ergo Proxy Collection
Shakugan no Shana Collection
Tsubasa Chronicle Season 1
Fate/Stay Night Collection
Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad Collection
Phoenix Collection
Shin-chan Season 2 Part 1
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki Collection
InuYasha Season 5
Death Note Vol. 6
Death Note Vol. 7
Death Note Vol. 8
Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan Collection
Otogi Zoshi Heian Arc
Love Hina Collection
Hellsing Ultimate Vol. 4 Limited Edition

Ow, my wallet!

[quote name='optimusprime8062']No problem , but still go for it! Many people, including me, are having no trouble getting it. Its been recommended to try and get Afro Samurai on Blu-Ray (because it is 50%) and then make the case with the other anime that you have on Blu-Ray should be 50% off because Afro is...[/QUOTE]

I tried this method for about 15 mins before i gave up trying to convince them, no luck :(

I ordered in-store pickup for the Complete Mushishi, Le Chevalier d'Eon, and The Girl that Leaped Through Time. I'll pick them up tomorrow after classes.

I went back into the Muncie, IN Best Buy yesterday and picked up a few more things. I'm not sure what others have said about Muncie being picked clean, maybe I'm just not into "the good stuff."

Anyways, in addition to the four Naruto volumes I bought on Sunday I bought Yu Yu Hakusho seasons 1 2 and 3. I've only seen and read a little bit of the anime/manga before, but it seemed okay and for over 30 hours of anime for $40 I couldn't pass it up!

Damn, my store was untouched since I left it sunday. I went back (after I told myself I wouldn't) and got...

Yu Yu Hakasho Seasons 1-3
Code Geass Sets 1 and 2 (vol 1-4 technically)
Negima Spring and Summer Specials
Eden's Bowy

In regards to ordering through the store kiosks, if you have a store nearby with the clearance sale going on, you can order anything through that kiosk and it will apply the discount. I did this to pre-order Full Metal Alchemist Season 2. I got it knocked down to $24.99. I went home and tried to see if all the prices were online and they weren't. Now I need to go back to order a couple more things. Try it out and see if it works for you guys. Another example was Yu Yu Hakusho season 4, in store kiosk had it for $12.49.

If I do instore pickup, would I have to pay full price now and adjust it when I got to the store? Since they are all still full price online.

Also is Death Note Boxset 1 (5 disk) for $50 the entire series?

haven't watched anime in quite some time. probably my suncoast days! with this deal it was hard to pass up....

Le Chevalier D'Eon Box (blind buy, looks cool though)
Cowboy Bebop Box
Haruhi Box

My Best Buy pretty much had everything in stock. Another one close by seems to have a lot I really want, judging by the site locator. Really want Blue Sub 6! I miss Toonami. :( I might pick up more if it drops even further. Is it going to hit 75% on the end of these dates or after, or even at all? Wouldn't mind picking up some $10 box sets of things for the hell of it.

That's what a customer service employee told me when I called the location I am picking my stuff up at. You "pay" full price at first and when you go to pick them up they apply the 50% off and credit it back to your card.

[quote name='cag1000'] Also is Death Note Boxset 1 (5 disk) for $50 the entire series?[/QUOTE]

Nope. Just half. The better part, IMO. The second set isn't out.

[quote name='Friend of Sonic']A local Best Buy put Robotech: Protoculture Collection on hold for me. After discount, it'd be 37.50+tax. It's a 21 disc set, which seems to be a fantastic price-- should I bite?[/quote]

If you like Robotech, I say it's well worth the price. I'd only seen it that low one other time and that was also at Best Buy.

I picked up:
Chevalier D'eon Complete set
Airgear Complete
Shinchan s1 set 1
Shinchan s1 set 2

I tried to get Gunbuster/Diebuster Blu-Ray set but I was expressly told that Blu-Ray was not included in the deal, even though there was no signage to tell me otherwise.

This was in Bellingham, WA Bestbuy.

Would anyone be willing to see what pokemon stuff they have next time you go? Not necessarily to watch it, I'm just a pokemon nerd. I don't have much where I am, so I'd pay you for the stuff+gas+shipping+a bit extra for your time, thanks! PM me.

I picked up:

Cowboy Bebop Remix whatever
Death Note live action
Haruhi
Xenosaga Complete Collection

Kind of pissed they didn't have Afro Samurai Blu-ray. Thinking about going back for Fate/Stay Night.

[quote name='Friend of Sonic']Got the last 5 Centimets Per Second. I'm a bit disturbed at myself that I spent 11.00 on 65 minutes of Anime, but something tells me it's going to be very much worth it.

Also picked up Cowboy Bebop Remix (with all of these releases, is Remix the best release of Cowboy Bebop to have?) a mismarked Black Lagoon (marked at 17.99, which I managed to get overridden to 9.00) Final Fantasy Unlimited, Witchblade (which I hope my girlfriends thinks I didn't get just for the tits), Inuyasha season 5 (for my GF) Case Closed season 3 (Season 1 or 2 were nowhere to be found) Samurai 7 (DVD version) and the first 13 episodes of the Mega Man anime.

Speaking of the Mega Man anime, it was in a section of anime that was sanctioned "Not valid for 50% off" along with, what basically appeared to be the "cheap" anime like Inuyasha season 2 (19.99 after discount) and others I can't remember now. Oddly enough, indeed the Mega Man did not ring up half off. I basically said, "C'mon!!" and they gave me the 50% off. Speaking of which, the Best Buy cashier was cool as hell... could very well be a CAG.

Anyway, given the selection I picked up, and how I wouldn't mind dropping another 60 bucks or so, is there any other well priced Anime that Best Buy sells that I shouldn't be without?

EDIT: I saw Fruits Basket. Should I have gotten that?[/quote]

Was that the Gilbert AZ store? I was there on Sunday and saw the manager moving titles to that rack.

What's interesting is that the Neon Genesis Evangelion Platinum pack was on the rack of excluded titles. Earlier on Sunday I picked that up at the Scottsdale Shea store, but I had to get the manager to add the 50% as it didn't ring up automatically. Maybe certain titles actually were supposed to be excluded?

So I decided to check out the Burlington, WA Bestbuy to see what they had and they didn't even know about the sale. They had pretty much everything that Bellingham had but more. Surprising considering the Burlington store is so much smaller.

I picked up

Ergo Proxy Complete
Gunbuster vs Diebuster Blu-Ray box set

I had to tell the cashier about the sale and a manager had to over-ride the Blu-Ray (which was awesome) but here's the kicker. The manager inadvertently halved the already half price of Ergo Proxy!!

So I paid $12.49 for Ergo Proxy set, and $34.99 for the Blu-Ray set of Buster series.

i hadnt seen it mentioned by anyone maybe because its very far from hardcore anime but i got the dead space blu ray half off today

Got a copy of Akira BD today, though I had to get it overridden. I thought I was stuck at first, as when the manager went to check on the sale she went back to the blu-ray section instead of anime (where all the signs are), but when she got back to the front she said the sale was only on "select" anime. I knew I had her then, as she didn't really know what the clearance was about, so I mentioned that the sign said "all" anime, so she asked me to show her. I did, she overrode, case closed.

Also got Gurren Lagan 1-3 and Bubblegum Crisis.

Is Gunbuster/Diebuster on blu-ray decent if you've never seen any of the series before? That one seems to intrigue me for some reason.

So if your store is having the clearance you can go on the computers and can order stuff that's not in there? I'm kinda confused on the details of all that.

What do you think this is a gaming forum?! :)

I was in there today and I couldn't find a copy of Akira on BD. I decided to check on the kiosk, since I wanted to double check on some other titles. When I did, I noticed that the prices were adjusted to reflect the clearance prices. My wife just got into Full Metal Alchemist, so I checked to see if they had the second season. When I did, I found that I could pre-order it from the kiosk at half price. I also other anime at cheaper prices, but didn't order at the time because I wanted to take off. After I ordered it, I grabbed all my stuff and went home. I wanted to order the fourth season of Yu Yu Hakusho and when I did it came up at full price. I can't confirm this, but I'm pretty sure if you order from a store kiosk where the store is having the clearance on anime, you will get the discount. I haven't gotten an update saying that my price will be adjusted or anything. I plan on stoppnig by tomorrow to order a couple more things and to confirm.

[quote name='Friend of Sonic']Hmmm... I'll look for Saint Seiya. I think I saw that, but I'm not sure.

Does Best Buy sell Grave of the Fireflies? It was one of my first anime DVDs I ever bought, which I sold stupidly. I can't find it on their site.[/quote]

Chances are they won't have it. It's out of print, but you never know if they've had one sitting around for years.

[quote name='dafunkk12']I tried to have customer service look up 5 Centimeters per Second, but they weren't having luck. Is it listed as "5" or "Five?" "Centimeters" or "CM?" Etc.

Or better yet, what's the SKU and/or UPC number?[/quote]

SKU is 8689172 from a picture someone posted earlier in the thread. I haven't called around with the SKU yet to see if they find it, so it may not be in their system, either.

Well, I went to two different Best Buy's today. One of which I hadn't been to before, and turns out it wasn't hit at all. Good news for me. ;)

Burst Angel: Complete Series - $19.99
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: Complete Collection - $22.49
the Girl Who Leapt Through Time: Collector's Edition - $17.99
Divergence Eve: The Seraphim Collection - $22.49
Black Lagoon: Complete First Season - $17.99
Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid Complete Series - $24.99
Fruits Basket: Complete Series - $24.99
5 Centimeters Per Second - $10.99
Street Fighter IV (360) - $59.99
Crysis (PC) - $9.99

Of course with my luck, neither Best Buys would okay the 50% off for blu-ray anime. I'm still a bit upset about it. But anyway, I think I spent too much as it is. Heh, oh well.

EDIT: I have just realized that 5 Centimeters Per Second is a collector's item and have kind of had a change of heart about giving it away. Sorry to anyone I might have disappointed. I really am.

Yeah but the blu ray box set are not full shows. I noticed huge pieces missing from each 'movie'. Each show is 6 episodes long, about 3 hours each show. The blu rays are only 1.5 hrs each.
