I got news of a potentially HUGE anime sale scheduled to start at approximately 460 Best Buy stores starting on 3/1/09 through 3/21/09.

ICv2 has obtained a list of the Best Buy stores that will be running 50% off close-out sales on anime beginning March 1st (see “Best Buy’s New Anime Strategy”) (article link is at bottom of this post). The sale will run from March 1st to March 21st and allow these 460+ stores to reduce their SKU count dramatically, as part of the chain’s move to concentrate its anime efforts in stores where anime has performed best.

I went to Bestbuy at Vineland NJ and still got rejecting on Bluray anime but I scored some anime that my local Maylanding store didn't have. Spent $800 for this sale until now and maybe I'll come back for another hual. Just like Madarame said" Buy Now Think Later" Otaku need to put the love above anything else.

The Kanon boxset is available online. Is that not worth anything, or is it strictly Kanon v5 that is worth something?

Also a non-sale store appears to have Kanon v5 instock, I suppose I'll do the return/rebuy for that one.

The Kanon boxset isn't released yet. It comes out in April.

The reason Kanon vol. 5 is worth alot is because it's out of print. Volumes 1-5 are now out of print, so they are most likely going to increase in value in the future. If they haven't already.

Ah, okay, even with the impending boxset coming out? And I assume since it's coming out in April, the preorder won't be 50% off (although I'm still going to check)
 
Dang. I did a random search for "Overman King Gainer" on the site, and the only stores that have 'em in stock and on the list is in Texas. I tried a few other states, and no tice.
 
I noticed some of you have been able to get the bluray anime titles. Would the item ring up at that price or do I need to tell them something for it to ring up?

Afro Samurai S1 should be 50% off. For others they need to manually adjust
 
finally caved and made my way to my local bb. spent $132 i don't have and picked up:

afro samurai resurrection bluray - 14.99
naruto box set 10, 11 - 19.99 each
fullmetal alchemist season 2 part 1 - 19.99
black blood brothers complete - 17.99
witchblade complete - 28.99

afro had to get adjusted, but it was easy enough to do. now i wish i grabbed the samurai 7 bluray. got denied on the $3 chex coupon tho. both cashier and manager said the 50% was a discounted price and the coupon only applied to regular priced items.

really wanted afro s1 bluray to complete the series, but even though store inventory showed 2 in stock, they were nowhere to be found.

I was going to suggest checking out the reviews at anime-source.com, but I looked and found nothing. That doesn't bode well unless it is known under a different title.

Yes, its just like BestBuy.com, you pay at the kiosk...then you print out your receipt. The items are either shipped to you or you can pick it up at a Best Buy, it doesnt have to be picked up at the Best Buy doing the sale, just whichever one in the area has it. But yeah, you have to use the kiosk at the store that has the sell to do this.

Mine had nothing new added to the lot. Several popular series sold, but otherwise it was pretty much the same as it was two days ago.

Gunbuster was one of Gainax's first anime from the late 80's. It parodizes the 1970's giant robot craze where all the pilots yell out their attacks (rocket punch!, buster beam!, etc). It's done in a very dramatic over-the-top fashion. Has the glassey-eyed character designs of Haruhiko Mikimoto (Macross, Gundam War In The Pocket) and the direction of Hideaki Anno (Evangelion, Nadia).

Maybe I appreciate it more from being a 30 year old old-schooler but I put Gunbuster in my top 10 anime of all time.

Diebuster came out a few years ago, and is obviously the sequel. The director of FLCL took care of this, and in a nutshell description, it really is "Gunbuster meets FLCL".

Gunbuster/Diebuster is a condensed version of both shows, reducing the running time to 90 minutes each. I enjoyed the bonus disc in the box immensely because it has a really engaging trailer combining the footage of both shows. I've converted at least 10 friends (some non-anime fans) just by showing the trailer.

My Best buy is still untouched, Im going back today but i really dont need any more anime considering im in the middle of like 10 box sets ( will my wife ever see the end chobits ? ) ... I have a question for you guys . What is up with the very end of Afro Sam Res ??? After the credits ???

That's weird because I was just there two days ago and I got one of the Full Metal Alchemist sets for the half off price. Interesting.

I bought something cheap to see if it rang up half off but it didn't. Did they have the 50% off signs on the anime rack when you looked?

On the subject of FMA, what's the difference between FMA Complete Season 1, and the two separate FMA Season 1 Box 1/2? They look identical but when I count the episodes up, the 2 seperate sets have a few more.
 
I was debating whether to try a BB that I've never been to before (it was about 60mi away), but I took the risk and it paid off

they're only different in that Season 1 complete has eps 1-25 and Season 2 complete (when it comes out ) will have eps 26-51

the 4 parts are kinda werid. Season 1 part one and part 2 go through eps 1-28 and season 2 parts 1 and 2 go from 29-51. Unfortunate that the complete season 1 and the 2 parts don't contain the same amount of eps because you can't just buy season 1 complete and the 2 Season 2 sets to complete the series.

So the missing episodes from the complete season 1 box set aren't really missing, they are just counted in the complete season 2 box set? It sounds like they priced them too expensive for the audience and then cut them up into 4 smaller box sets which required them to cute the episode numbering differently.

Nope, they didn't have any signs up on the racks about the sale. I just figured they would be part of it since they were listed here.
 
For those still looking for Akira on Blu-ray the non-limited version is due out to retailers on March 10th. So look for restocking around that time.

Strangely for me, when I went today to order Moribito Vol 3 it didn't give me the option for in-store pickup, only shipping to my home. Not sure if this is isolated or something their starting to enforce on these closeout stores.

yes, they're not missing, just split differently

actually the 4 box sets came out first. The second "complete" season comes out on Tuesday and is the New ones. Season 1 and SEason 2 complete instead of 1/2's of each season (making 4 sets)
 
Strange how they did that. After the 50% off it's actually cheaper for me to buy the complete seasons. The separate boxes are $40 each originally and the complete set is $50 originally. I wonder if the second complete season will also be 50% off?
 
Tried to pre-order Wolf's Rain, but I guess you can't pre-order something that is going to be released after the sale is over. I found a copy of Osamu Tezuka's Phoenix, but it was packaged wrong and instead of having all three discs, the second one repeated. I ended up pre-ordering the Berserk collection for $15. Also, the Akira BD comes up at full price in the kiosk.
 
There is something off about the Elfen Lied boxset. Volume One ends at Episode Four on the back and Volume Two starts with Episode 6. While there is more then Four episodes on the first disc something is missing as after you watch Episode #3 you will get quite confused with the next episode there is clearly missing content. /boggle
 
The several people that listed Gurren Lagann led me to believe that there was a complete collection out, but this doesn't seem to be the case. Using the kiosk just confused me, and now I look on rightstuf and see there are basically 4 versions of each volume. What the fuck?

Gurren Lagann Sub Only Vol1,2,3 Completes the series
Gurren Lagann Dub/Sub has SE and LE. Set 1 and 2 is out but I don't know how people got set three yet.

I enjoyed the bonus disc in the box immensely because it has a really engaging trailer combining the footage of both shows. I've converted at least 10 friends (some non-anime fans) just by showing the trailer.

With the running time reduced by half, would you recommend the set for someone who has never seen the show, with the qualification that getting the full version instead is NOT an option? In other words, it's watch this condensed version or not watch the series at all.

Heck, I imagine the chance of me tracking down the full version would increase if I get this one and like it. :D

which appears to be both Full Metal Panic! and FMP Fumoffu series.
Now I dont understand how the original FMP series is 7 discs 24 episodes and the Fumoffu series is 3 discs 12 episodes. The combo set is 6 discs 36 episodes, so the episode math adds up, but not the discs. Is the show going to be compressed on the combo disc set? Should I keep the 7 disc set of FMP and find the fumoffu seperately or return my FMP set and buy the combo set?

I really wish I had the money to take advantage of this sale more. I was in Best Buy at lunch time just looking for something dirt cheap (like $5 or less) just because it's cheap and I want anime. I stumbled across alot of Witchblade sets, Deathnote, and I think even one store still has a Kenshin set (in a brown box). It's also just fun looking at the various anime and trying to find something new to watch that looks appealing.

*sigh*
Next paycheck can't come fast enough.

Yeah, I had to have two things shipped to my house. I suppose if they don't have it in store, or have a sufficient number of copies in store, they just have it shipped to you.
 
Just got what I needed or wanted. Got complete set of 'The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya' and 'Full Metal Panic TSR Vol. 3 & 4 (only volumes I was missing).

Also picked up season 2 of Yu Yu Hakusho for my friend as well.

Otherwise I wish I could pick up more but other hobbies demand more investment despite such a good sale.
