A Heartfelt HELLO to all my friends at CheapAssGamer!

I got news of a potentially HUGE anime sale scheduled to start at approximately 460 Best Buy stores starting on 3/1/09 through 3/21/09.

Here's the listing of the 400+ stores scheduled to run this sale:

From ICV2.com news:

"Best Buy’s Anime Close-out Stores March 1st to 21st

Published: 02/20/2009, Last Updated: 02/23/2009 04:45am

ICv2 has obtained a list of the Best Buy stores that will be running 50% off close-out sales on anime beginning March 1st (see “Best Buy’s New Anime Strategy”) (article link is at bottom of this post). The sale will run from March 1st to March 21st and allow these 460+ stores to reduce their SKU count dramatically, as part of the chain’s move to concentrate its anime efforts in stores where anime has performed best.

Here's a comprehensive article on Best Buy's new ANIME Strategy as mentioned at the top of this thread:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-02-20/best-buy-to-change-dvd-strategy

Finalized list: here.

I've got 2 stores in my area so hopefully I'll find some stuff of interest.

Also, animaniac provided this coupon which can be used with this sale:

Superhugethankssomuch to those who pointed out you can order from the kiosks. My-Hime and Love Hina are both heading to me for about 17 bucks each. That's cheaper then bootlegs! EDIT: Not that I'd know or anything...
With the running time reduced by half, would you recommend the set for someone who has never seen the show, with the qualification that getting the full version instead is NOT an option? In other words, it's watch this condensed version or not watch the series at all.

Heck, I imagine the chance of me tracking down the full version would increase if I get this one and like it. :D
only the box set movies are reduced time,if you buy them apart (as i did) you will get the full version which is another reason i opted not to get the boxset
Has anyone had any luck finding full sets of DBZ and Haruhi in the Dallas/Ft.W area?
I found some at the East Plano store (which is not on the 50% off list). You can try buying them there and then getting a price adjustment at one of the 50% off locations. Some have had success doing that.

Ah, kinda late but it doesnt look like either of the two stores in my area are closing out, so I suppose its not too much of a loss. I would have traveled out to a further store if I had known earlier. Alas, it was not meant to be
For those still looking for Akira on Blu-ray the non-limited version is due out to retailers on March 10th. So look for restocking around that time.
Was there a limited edition of Akira blu-ray? I thought there was only one version of it on BR.

Picked up a few from a couple different best buys-
Akira blu ray- 17.50
Ghost in the Shell 2 blu ray- 15
Samurai 7 blu ray- 35
Afro Samurai blu ray S1- 10
Witchblade- 29
Ergo Proxy- 25
Desert Punk- 20
Death Note- 25
Trinity Blood- 35
Ghost in the shell SAC 1- 20
Black Lagoon- 18
Le Chevaliler D' Eon- 25
This Ugly Yet Beautiful World Tin- 22.50

Might go back and grab a few more tomorrow.

Okay, after trips to two stores, and a third once I learned about the kiosks, I think I'm done with this sale. I really want more, but I just don't think I can bring myself to spend any more money. Here's what I got:

Afro Samurai: Season One (Blu Ray)
Azumanga Daioh, Volume 2: Complete Collection
Basilisk Box Set
Berserk (Preordered)
Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan
Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040
Cowboy Bebop Remix: Complete Collection
Deathnote Box Set 1
Elfen Lied
Escaflowne: The Movie
Escaflowne: Complete Collection
Fruits Basket: Complete Collection
Fullmetal Alchemist: Season 1
Fullmetal Alchemist: Season 2 (Preordered)
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Limited Edition)
GTO - Semester 1 Box Set
GTO - Semester 2 Box Set
Howl's Moving Castle
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Complete Collection
Mushi-shi
My Beautiful Girl, Mari/A Tree of Palme (double pack thing)
My Neighbor Totoro
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Platinum Perfect Collection
Princess Mononoke
School Rumble: The Complete First Season

In total it was about $550 after tax and shipping for a few items from the kiosk. There goes my entire bonus :whistle2:(. I think it'll be worth it though.
Was there a limited edition of Akira blu-ray? I thought there was only one version of it on BR.
Yes, the first pressing came with a slipcover and booklet (80 pgs?). The second pressing will not contain either of these things. The important stuff, the disc contents, are the same.

Man what were the two sites that people continued to talk about...that had good deals on anime? I just clicked through 9 pages looking for it and I'm losing patience. I just want to check out some of there deals, out of interest.
they're only different in that Season 1 complete has eps 1-25 and Season 2 complete (when it comes out ) will have eps 26-51

the 4 parts are kinda werid. Season 1 part one and part 2 go through eps 1-28 and season 2 parts 1 and 2 go from 29-51. Unfortunate that the complete season 1 and the 2 parts don't contain the same amount of eps because you can't just buy season 1 complete and the 2 Season 2 sets to complete the series.
Damn, thanks for pointing this out wormraper. Here I was thinking I'd gotten the complete series...glad I didn't open them yet. Anybody able to get season two preordered through one of those kiosks for the sale price of $25? Do they have these kiosks at most stores, as I don't remember seeing anything that stands out except fot those computers that the employees use to check stock? I'd like to get the complete series for $50 total rather than $80 by returning complete season one for parts 1 and 2.

Well, hell. I was debating picking this up, and I had just about talked myself out of it (to the relief of my wallet), then I find this out. Thanks a lot, jerk. :D

My modest haul from East Palo Alto, Mountain View, & Sunnyvale, CA locations

You obviously lose the original pacing & some plot development by getting these condensed versions. I'm currently showing my coworker one episode a week after work of the original versions, and there's something to be said about taking one's time to savor this show (though I recommend you watch Gunbuster episodes 5 & 6 in one sitting).

Deep Discount has the 6-episode Gunbuster DVD set at $45, though mistakenly labeled as Gunbuster - The Movie in the search results. Interestingly enough, it suffers from having one scene edited in the form of a background music change since the original release bore similarities to the famous tune from Chariots Of Fire. That compelled me to convert my VHS editions to DVD.

As you can tell, it's hard for me to give an objective recommendation as this might benefit from rose-colored nostalgia of originally being one of the earliest uncut anime translations released in the States in the late 80's (published by Books Nippan/U.S. Renditions on VHS). Gunbuster also benefits from displaying a level detail back when everything was hand drawn & colored. Of course this was pre-recession Japan, so much anime back then was high quality & fluid as hell.

Tell me about it. I went in today to pick up my Watchmen pack and dropped another $30. I've already spent more than $200 easy.
Has anyone had any luck finding full sets of DBZ and Haruhi in the Dallas/Ft.W area?
Full sets..I'm think complete series when it comes to Haruhi (I've seen some). DBZ, I've seen some seasons of it. Quiet a few actually..hard to remember which places though. I think I saw some at the Best Buy in Allen, Mckinney also. I've been to most that did the sale around there, just never really looked for DBZ.

Haruhi - By this I'm assuming you mean The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, I've seen the complete box again at Allen (this was a few days ago), and I know they have it in Mckinney. Not sure if any other stores around still have any.

So to sum it up, try Allen and Mckinney.

30 i paid 15 its a anime why didnt you say that

1001095.jpg

Yeah, i went back again. I'd rather not stop this, heh. But I am going to run out of money soon if I don't. Such good deals.

:dvd: Suzuka: Complete Series - $24.99
:dvd: Origins: Spirits from the Past - $9.99
:br: Gunbuster vs. Diebuster - $34.99
:br: Samurai 7 - $34.99

They didn't even question the blu-ray 50% off this time. I just mentioned that they need a manager override and the manager worked their magic no question. I'm proud of you Best Buy.

The manager did say something about them getting rid of their entire anime section; and that is why their having the sale. Man, I sure hope they don't.

Used another 16 coupons spread across two stores, three transactions today (these cashiers must be in the "Cool Zone") Before I ramble on with my list (to make sure I didnt' buy complete crap) I want to alert everyone to the possibility of free anime: Trinity Blood Chapter IV Viridian Collection is only 5.99. That brought back wistful memories of using the 5 dollar Playstation coupons to get free games, so I wanted to see if I could get Trinity Blood IV for free. Sure enough, it rang up 0.00-- 50% off of 5.99 making it 2.99, then the 3.00 coupon applied.Awesome, beats most of the crappy Playstation games I got for 0.00 back in the day. Also, every BB in the area has Dragonball Z season 1 marked 34.99-- however, it rings up for 12.49. It's a surefire pickup, especially coupled with the 3.00 coupon since it's the first 39 episodes.

Snagged these today-- spending too much cash. Gotta stop. Have problem. "-3.00" indicates I used a 3.00 coupon to bring it down even lower.

All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku 21.50-3.00 (The entire OVA, and two series, 7 disc set. Has praise for it plastered on the back of it, is it good?)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex complete series 19.99- 3.00
Beast King Golion- 11.49 -3.00
Vexille 2 disc- 9.99- 3.00
Kanon Volume 5- 11.49- 3.00
Trinity Blood IV- 2.99- 3.00 (Free?!)
Black Blood Brothers- 17.99- 3.00
The rest of the Yu Yu Hakusho sets I needed-- 12.49 -3.00
Coyote Ragtime Show- 17.99- 3.00
Fate Stay Night 24.99 -3.00
Strait Jacket - 7.50-3.00
Bludgeoning Angel Dokuri Chan- 8.50- 3.00
Dragon Ball Z season 1 - 12.49-3.00

And of course, opinions of complete shit I may have picked up are always welcomed. Today I rebought some sets so I could return them with my old receipt, but noticed on my two receipts that there was some anime that I couldn't find seconds of, so I thought I'd bring some coupons with me and see if the customer service rep could adjust my receipt. She could, she could! Actually, now if I can get four more sets I have adjusted, I would have gotten every piece of anime with an additional 3.00 taken off. Sweet. I gotta head back to the store later tomorrow to pick up the rest of their movies-- 3.00 off a 7.50 movie= brilliance.

Also, funny story. I put in an online instore pickup order for Samurai Deeper Kyo with the free GBA game. I get the confirmation the order is ready, so I head down there. The rep at the desk comes back with my order, which is season 5 of Inuyasha. :whistle2:s I asked her if she can check the backroom for any more of the Samurai set and she finds nothing. I ask her if I can have the Inuyasha set for 29.99 since whoever pulled it thought that it was equal to the Samurai set. No dice, although she took 10% off and accepted my coupon. So my girlfriend got Inuyasha season 5 for 35 after tax, so she's happy about that. Funny how that worked out-- my GF had the first four seasons-- how strange of them to pick Inuyasha 5 of all animes to sneak into my order. I must have an Anime Guardian Angel or something.

Anyway, I placed an order for Samurai Deeper Kyo at a kiosk-- I hope I get it because I really want that friggin GBA game.

EDIT: OT, but is there an Anime that deals with poker? I think a poker anime would be awesome. I don't see it as a series, but maybe a movie.

I went to the kiosk looking to complete my Welcome to the NHK series by picking up the second of the re-release collections, but it was still $42-something. Thankfully I didn't waste my whole trip as I placed an order for Gurren Lagann vol. 2 for $10.
Thank You!:D

I hope they don't read the coupon, because it says Reg. Price Items, 9.99 and up. Knowing my luck, I'll be shot down.
No worries, read it again. I thought that too, but it only mentions that restriction applies to CDs.

EDIT: So, let me get this straight, if I can. The Big Box LE of Gurren Lagan is basically what is included in the small box LE? And there are a total of three sets to complete the series. Then you have the cheapo sets that are 19.99 a piece, but without the special features? Special features, I don't mind since it's still a two disc for 7.00 for what I hear is a good series.

I wish we could put a list together in the OP, since I come and read your guy's post, and I miss most of those things.

- I'll try the coupon tomorrow. I'm low on ink, so it's in B/W.

Even with the absolute shit cropping of the series 12 bucks is a good deal for the first season of dbz. Especially since its the ONLY option for the uncut version of the first season. I have all the other dvds from the first release but they've yet to release the first season in a form that isn't complete garbage.

Seriously? That's extremely disappointing. Reading the back of the box, it sounded like it got a grade A treatment. Of course, the back of the box didn't mention crappy cropping, although I wouldn't expect it to.

But the price was right, and I'll still enjoy myself-- still a bit of a downer!

Honestly, it ruins a lot of scenes its so bad. If you go to the product page on amazon there are some comparison shots. In the first season theres quite a few times when the top of someone head is completely cropped out as well as some lines that define body parts and teeth.

Heres a link:

Look at the user images.

Oh my gosh, why? That does look attrocious. If they couldn't do it properly, why didn't they just stick with 4:3? Are all of the season sets of DBZ like that?

Yeah, they've all been "remastered" that way. Why the fuck they would take inches off of the top and bottom to add centimeters to the sides is beyond me. That's why I still don't have the complete series. There is absolutely no way to get from the first episodes to the beginning of namek uncut without dealing with these newer garbage cropped boxsets.

But now with Dragonball Kai being played in HD in Japan its only a matter of time until its released over here. The problem with that is that Kai is just DBZ with all of the filler cut out. So getting one season of Kai mixed in with a bunch of the regular DBZ would fuck it all up. You just can't win with funimation when it comes to this series.
The manager did say something about them getting rid of their entire anime section; and that is why their having the sale. Man, I sure hope they don't.
It is true about them getting rid of the anime section, but it's not all Best Buys; only the stores that are having the clearance are getting rid of their anime sections.

So, at the end of the sale, does that mean anything left will be shipped to other stores?

animethug mentioned that if you get the Gunbuster and Diebuster movies separately, and not in the box set, that they are the full versions; however, all the info on the separate versions I can find online says the runtime is only about 95 minutes, which makes them the condensed versions. Can anybody confirm either way?

The Blu-ray releases you've seen pics of in this thread (both the separates & the boxed version) are the shortened 90min versions of both Gunbuster & Diebuster. The original 6-episode versions of both series have yet to be released on Blu-ray in the States.

This is the cover of the 6-episode, 190 minute, non-Blu-ray U.S. version of Gunbuster: http://www.amazon.com/Gunbuster-Nor..._bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1236349797&sr=8-2

These are the covers of Diebuster (Gunbuster 2), still only available in the U.S. as 3 separate volumes, 2 episodes each (54 minutes per disc), non-Blu-ray:
I think I'll just use the Kiosk today instead of driving around
Good idea.

On a side note, I noticed a few cases of your standard 'hide X DVD somewhere else so I can buy it later'. One where a Final Fantasy Unlimited box was in the discounted PS2 racks near the back of the store & the Akira Blu-ray I bought in the Wii section.

I never thought of looking in other places. I will do that.
I'm looking for My-Otome, which I was told was long gone in most stores.
I'm also looking for Cowboy Bebop too.

That's basically it.

I wanted this one series, but I forgot the name. It was one of those 13 episodes series for 30 bucks.
It has like different colored squares on the back, and one the front, some girl with pigtails in an orange sweater with a gun.

- Also, IDK if this is correct or what. Someone told me, that the kiosk would say something is sold out, when they had various copies, while it would say the opposite for items that really were in stock.

Just an example, I returned the Final Fantasy Unlimited box to the anime section, and this was right before the store closed (Sunnyvale, CA). It's listed in the website as unavailable, so I can't vouch of accuracy.

Well, it might say it is unavailable for in store pick up, but you could just have it delivered to your house. If a store only has one copy of something it will not be available for in store pickup, something like 3 or more and it will (maybe just 2 I dont know).
