A Heartfelt HELLO to all my friends at CheapAssGamer!

I got news of a potentially HUGE anime sale scheduled to start at approximately 460 Best Buy stores starting on 3/1/09 through 3/21/09.

Here's the listing of the 400+ stores scheduled to run this sale:

From ICV2.com news:

"Best Buy’s Anime Close-out Stores March 1st to 21st

Published: 02/20/2009, Last Updated: 02/23/2009 04:45am

ICv2 has obtained a list of the Best Buy stores that will be running 50% off close-out sales on anime beginning March 1st (see “Best Buy’s New Anime Strategy”) (article link is at bottom of this post). The sale will run from March 1st to March 21st and allow these 460+ stores to reduce their SKU count dramatically, as part of the chain’s move to concentrate its anime efforts in stores where anime has performed best.

Here's a comprehensive article on Best Buy's new ANIME Strategy as mentioned at the top of this thread:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-02-20/best-buy-to-change-dvd-strategy

Finalized list: here.

I've got 2 stores in my area so hopefully I'll find some stuff of interest.

Also, animaniac provided this coupon which can be used with this sale:
I remember that. You only had B&M options so you were stuck paying retail prices for 2 episodes. If you were lucky the dub was 5 bucks less expensive than the sub. I bought Eva that way and there was like a six month delay between volumes 10 and 11. I was pissed.

Man, do we have it good now.
Yeah, it came to a point where getting the next Evangelion tape was an event. All my friends dropped everything they did, and came to my house. I recall the same level of anticipation with Giant Robo, which was painful since it took 8 years to get all 7 episodes out.
Hi everyone,
I am totally new in my exploration of Anime. While I own over 1000 movies, including HD DVD and Blus, I will not likely buy anything from this sale, simply because I am not knowledgeable about the different themes, types, etc. However, I love to try out new genres, and my cinema tastes vary and are quite ecclectic.

I am 33, and tend to gravitate towards "heavy duty", meaty films, and tend to check in or post here, regarding Blu & DVD deals at B&M and online stores.

I know one type of Anime (as is the case with any cinema), will not necessarily appeal to everyone equally. A few years ago I saw Princeess Mononoke, and didn't enjoy it. I saw 5 Cm, and did like it, but I didn't really have anything to which to compare it.

So, can anyone provide some suggestions on what types of Anime to check out? I really don't think I'd be into the "silly" type, I've seen snippets of. I may like space, "end of the world" and other more serious themed series, but again, I really have no idea. I know this doesn't belong in this sales thread, but I would appreciate any suggestions you have, on shows/movies that you would recommend for an anime newbie, to get acquainted with the genre. You can PM me. Thanks for your time and good luck with your BB hunts- know it's awesome when you get good "scores"!:)
Personally...someone who doesn't enjoy PRINCESS MONONOKE (a movie i have seen, no joke, 40-50 times and still not grown even a little bit bored of it) will most likely not enjoy anime at all..at least that's my opinion..considering thats one of the ICE BREAKERS of animes if you want to get your anime-absent friends into it

So those $3 off coupons are AMAZING...thinkin of returning and rebuying a couple series just to save..err...$50?

so far i've purchased:

BLU-RAY: Akira $(18.71)
Black Lagoon - The Second Barrage Vol. 2 $(11.65)
Black Lagoon - The Second Barrage Vol. 3 $(11.65)
Code Geass - Lelouch of the Rebellion Part II Box Set $(22.78)
Death Note Vol. 8 Limited Edition [w/Shadoh Figurine] $(15.89)
Dragon Ball GT - Season 1 $(19.07)
Dragon Ball GT - Season 2 $(19.25)
Dragon Ball GT - The Lost Episodes Box Set (Vols 1-5) $(20.13)
Dragon Ball Z - Season 3 $(15.36)
Dragon Ball Z - Season 4 $(18.18)
Dragon Ball Z - Season 5 $(18.18)
Dragon Ball Z - Season 6 $(18.18)
Dragon Ball Z - Season 7 $(16.04)
Dragon Ball Z - Season 8 $(16.04)
Ghost Hunt Season 1 Part 1 $(16.04)
Ghost Hunt Season 1 Part 2 $(16.04)
Gurren Lagann Part 1 w/Limited Edition Box Set $(21.72)
Hellsing Ultimate Vol. 1 [Limited Edition w/Collector's Tin] $(12.83)
Pet Shop of Horrors $(9.62):
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Regular Edition) $(8.55)
Yu Yu Hakusho Season 1 $(10.15)
Yu Yu Hakusho Season 2 $(10.15)

So far, with tax, i've spent $375 on this sale...tho hopefully i can recoup some of that with returning and rebuying some stuff with the coupon :whistle2:D
30 i paid 15 its a anime why didnt you say that
I got it for free. I used the buy any LIVE item sale, since my account expires next month. I dropped $30 on season 4 of YuYu Hakusho and Berserk(pre-order).
Alright well, anyone who's used the kiosk in-store, have you ever noticed seeing any anime DVDs that didn't turn up 50% on it? I'm looking at one in particular that released back in October and is showing up as the regular price. Any reason it would be doing this? And is there anyway to get the price 50% off if I order it now for the original price? It's not available at any stores nearby.
Anyone have any idea if I could get the 50% off for this somehow?

I'm guessing the reason is that the Store never carried that anime so it wasn't marked as 50% off. It is probably just whatever series they carry/carried or plan to carry that is being discounted. There is a TON of anime that's not 50% off.

The back-ordered anime not being 50% off seems like they may have fixed some flaws with their system. They have done a bunch of updates to it during this sale. Tenchi originally wouldn't ring up 50% but now does. It seems like they may have updated what is part of the sale.
Anyone have any idea if I could get the 50% off for this somehow?
Probably not. I don't think there is anyway for it to work.

Kiosk ordering was probably not something they wanted happening as well but that would definitely be harder to fix.
Yes, the first pressing came with a slipcover and booklet (80 pgs?). The second pressing will not contain either of these things. The important stuff, the disc contents, are the same.
Does any have a picture of the LE packaging so that I know what I should be looking for?

Damn, I had to go back for more :D

Hellsing Ultimate Vol 3 and 4 ($5.99 each after $3 off coupong)
Full Metal Panic TSR complete series ($21.99 after coupon)
Fullmetal Alchemist 1st Season complete ($21.99 after coupon)
Ghost in the Shell 2nd Gig (found a single copy in town at another best buy so I used my clearance stores Kiosk to order at 50% off :D )
Yu Yu Hakusho Season 4 ($12.49)

Thanks everyone who cared to share your thoughts regarding Anime, its history, and some personal recommendations, based on the interests we discussed over PM's. I appreciate your taking the time to suggest some of your favorites based on my general taste in material. Have a great time at the sale-Digital Babe
Awesome

Today I picked up

School Rumble Vol 1 Special Edition - $6.99
&
5 Centimeters Per Second - $10.99
:)
Nice find with the 5 Centimeters Per Second. Good stuff. I can't decide if I want to buy School Rumble yet or not.
Anyone have any idea if I could get the 50% off for this somehow?
Time Machine? I ordered this three days ago and it showed up for 32.49-- it was backordered then too. Maybe try another store's kiosk? I'll check my store when I go in next and let you know what I find out.

Also, update to Trinity Blood-- I got the whole series except for the first volume for 4.00 using the chex Coupons. Volume 1-4 are 2.99 after 50% off, then you can use the coupon to get them for free. Volume 5 and 6 are 2.00 a piece after chex coupon. Awesome deal, although I wish they had volume 1. Also, these are the Viridian volumes-- the normal volumes seem identical, but cost more.

Also, after using 40 of the Chex Mix coupons (I even got all of my previous Chex Mix-less transactions fixed) I finally got turned down. The cashier was all ready to take all ten of my coupons (which would have taken me to the 50 mark) but she called her manager over because she wasn't sure how to use them. Got shot down of course. :bomb: Maybe it's for the best. I've spent too much already... but I really wanted some of their sets :/ They had the Area 88 OVA and series and some other nice stuff.
So,
Is the Full Metal Panic: Complete Collection worth 40 bucks?
I picked it up today as a matter of fact. I had 3 DVDs from the original release that were out of order(1, 3 & 7) and I had always wanted the other 4 DVDs, so picking this set up was something I jumped at. $40 is a great price for the complete series when you see Amazon selling single volumes for $26 alone. I'm going back to watching it now...:lol::lol:

Someone told me that series was junk, like Gundam.
I'm going to go tomorrow and pick it up then.

Thanks

You should just show them your receipt that has Freedom for 50% off. They should have no excuse to not adjust it then.

On top of East Palo Alto, Sunnyvale & Mountain View, I drove an extra 10 miles south to San Jose, CA tonight. Their selection was still surprisingly good, I guess partially because there was only one sign advertising the sale, one of those 3 by 5 tags in the middle of the aisle.

On a funny side note, I brought this to the attention of one guy who was browsing, who then proceeded give me recommendations that I didn't even ask for, saying that he was 'retired' and got most of these DVDs already. That was a little obnoxious. 10 minutes later he loses his formerly cool know-it-all demeanor as I see him at the register asking the sales rep to hold the DVDs he initially brought to the counter, because he wanted to go back and get more, as if he didn't believe me (and the sign) that all the anime was 50% off. It was obvious he wanted to check with the register first (thanks, dude).

Anyway, what I got:
Rahxephon Grand Canon Collection: $34.99
Gurran Lagaan Set 01 Limited Edition $23.49
Vexille Blu-ray $12.49
Big O Complete Collection $14.99
Gurran Lagaan Vol. 3 $9.99
Yu Yu Hakusho Season 1 $10.99
Yu Yu Hakusho Season 2 $10.99
Yu Yu Hakusho Season 3 $10.99
Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence Steelcase $10.99
Megazone 23 Complete Collection $9.99
Suzuka The Complete Series $24.99

There were many copies to go around, with the exception of GITS2, Yu Yu Season 1, & Big O, of which I go the last of. As usual, much DBZ, Black Lagoon, Death Note, FMA too. For those who PMed me about Negima & MyHime Collections, yes there were multiple copies too. And many Blu-ray copies of Samurai 7, Gunbuster, Diebuster, Gunbuster/Diebuster box, a DBZ movie, Vexille, & Freedom.

Oh, and it didn't seem like it was their policy to discount the Blu-rays, but if you get the employee who looks a little like Ellen Page, she might make an exception (I had to shamelessly frown a bit, and was this close to lowering my bottom lip).

Sunnyvale had junk! Waste of time.
And don't even go to CC. Nothing left at all.

- Checked avatar on the Kiosk Computer. Full Price.
Also noticed, most anime, if not regular price, was a dollar less on the in-store computer Vs. Home Computer.

Sunnyvale was good yesterday. My last post was just in reference to the San Jose store. Sorry for the confusion.
Ok this is what makes Anime so frigging annoying...
I can buy this of full metal panic!
http://www.amazon.com/Full-Met...id=1236308962&sr=8-1
which appears to be both Full Metal Panic! and FMP Fumoffu series.
Now I dont understand how the original FMP series is 7 discs 24 episodes and the Fumoffu series is 3 discs 12 episodes. The combo set is 6 discs 36 episodes, so the episode math adds up, but not the discs. Is the show going to be compressed on the combo disc set? Should I keep the 7 disc set of FMP and find the fumoffu seperately or return my FMP set and buy the combo set?
Despite not being labeled as such, that pack is actually stripped of all extras (aside from ADV's trailers for other series). It's a ripoff that I'm going to e-mail ADV's customer service about, just an absolutely crappy business practice with no redeeming quality (and seriously no warning anywhere on the package that could lead someone to think it). The Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi is also stripped of even better extras for some god-forsaken reason. So if you're reading this, and can get either of the series in a slightly more expensive but different collection, do so for your own benefit. The FMP "Heavy Metal Collection" is also packaged pretty poorly, just asking for disc scratching the way you've got 6 discs stacked on eachother.
Wait wait wait, do you mean "fixed" like you went to customer service with your coupons afterwards and they applied them to it? Because when I tried to use my coupons yesterday at checkout on my 2nd haul, the guy said no to me, and it would've saved me $15 there and over $30 on my first trip. Any info on the best way to use the coupons?

No, I understood. Sunnyvale was cleaned out today. Maybe morning rush?
Also, CS was rude about the coupon or helping, period. I was looking for Cowboy Bebop, and it seems like many people had called or asked about it, since their attitude changed once I mentioned that title.

Also, E. Palo Alto BB has the worst service ever! I only had enough time to go to one store, but I left that store in a hurry and went to Sunnyvale! They said the coupon was a fraud. Someone told me that it was fine to PM, then they changed their story.

I don't ask for much, but at least do your job without an attitude. Don't even smile.
^ O_O damn....you win *bows down*
I'm still so upset because I can't get the Gunbuster vs Diebuster,Akira on bluray for 50% off like other CAGs.

After doing some kiosk rumblings, here are my notes:

There was one kiosk which reflected regular web prices. WEIRD. I went to another kiosk and the prices were properly discounted. Be careful of this.

Starship Troopers: Roughnecks gets lumped in with their regular anime sales on their web site...but the 50% off doesn't apply to it right now. Still full price.

Renaissance is full price as well. Someone here got lucky to get it marked down half price.

Origin regular edition is 9.99. Origin two disc SPECIAL EDITION is 7.49. Yeah, order the special edition if you can.

Princess Tutu is a steal at $16.99 if you love fairy tales OR ballet. Berserk is a steal at $14.99 if you love blood OR guts.

I couldn't find any good Gundam prices. Maybe it's a special thing.

Funnily enough, Excel Saga imperfect collection is $8.99 but it's backordered and will never ship.

What I did was bring in my receipt and the coupons. They were able to give me a refund of 3.00 per item/coupon. I think they process it as a price match, from what I saw, maybe there's an option in there for someone who forgot to use a coupon or something. But you shouldn't need to bring your sets in to do a return and rebuy unless they don't know what they're doing.

The younger, the better. Those kids at Best Buy know how to have a good time! 40 coupons=120 (plus the savings of tax on that 120) of savings. If there's a hell for using a scanned Chex Mix coupon, I'll be sure to let you guys know.

Man that is nice. I should definitely do that.

But wouldn't it look pretty awkward coming up to CS with 40 coupons to refund for stuff you bought? What are the odds of being refused?
Man that is insanely awesome. I should definitely do that. But wouldn't it look pretty awkward coming up to CS with 40 coupons to refund for stuff you bought?
I think he has luck. If I walked in with 40 coupons, mangers would be alerted! :/

I think it's better to re-buy and return. IMO.

I didn't think the Niles, OH store was included in this Anime clearance but when I stopped by today to look for The Orange Box I went to the anime section on a whim. They had once copy of the Death Note Box Set 1 and the first live action movie. I bought both for less than $40 and was quite pleased.

With the chex-mix coupons...Aren't those off of the "full-price"? If so, I'd have to luck out and find someone willing to ignore the fine print then, or is it a generally accepted fact that the coupon's terms are ignored at Best Buy? The change in price, of three bucks would likely change my mind on at least one of the series.

I forgot about those movies. Though I was only decently interested in the [adult swim] run of the anime, I'm much more interested in seeing how they translate that into live action. Checking the BestBuy.com site, it looks like the live action movies are listed under "drama" rather than "anime." Did you find yours in the anime section or with the regular movies? And of course the big question: did it ring up 50% off or did you have to argue for it?
I never thought of looking in other places. I will do that.
I'm looking for My-Otome, which I was told was long gone in most stores.
I'm also looking for Cowboy Bebop too.

That's basically it.

I wanted this one series, but I forgot the name. It was one of those 13 episodes series for 30 bucks.
It has like different colored squares on the back, and one the front, some girl with pigtails in an orange sweater with a gun.

- Also, IDK if this is correct or what. Someone told me, that the kiosk would say something is sold out, when they had various copies, while it would say the opposite for items that really were in stock.
Very much off topic, but if you're still looking for My-Otome, RightStuf.com is selling each volume for $5 (the special edition of the first volume for $10).

Well so far I have bought the following :

Shakugan No Shana
My-Hime
Deathnote
Yu Yu Hakusho Season 1 - 3
Ghost Hunt Box 1 + 2
Kaleido Star
Kashimashi
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
Clannad disc 1

Here are pics of my entire collection tho (Manga too)

Oh this is the wrong topic but I will get the rest of fruits baskets today since rightstuf is having a sale on tokyopop manga (33% off retail price....you you save like an extra dollar a manga). I will also order YYH Session 4 for 19.99.

The system does not show the anime on sale (50% off price just shows as the price), so most cashiers will be completely clueless that it isn't the regular price of the dvd.

Score! Thanks, I may pick up something afterall :D

hmm just picked up Ghosthunt 1 and 2 today. Was thinking of getting Kino no Tabi, Air Gear, and the Nadesico movie, but decided to just get ghosthunt in the end...

I haven't even seen it (or any of my other choices) so I don't know if it's any good, but I like supernatural stuff so I hope it is. I usually only buy anime on dvd if it's already in my favorites list.
