A Heartfelt HELLO to all my friends at CheapAssGamer!

I got news of a potentially HUGE anime sale scheduled to start at approximately 460 Best Buy stores starting on 3/1/09 through 3/21/09.

Here's the listing of the 400+ stores scheduled to run this sale:

From ICV2.com news:

"Best Buy’s Anime Close-out Stores March 1st to 21st

Published: 02/20/2009, Last Updated: 02/23/2009 04:45am

ICv2 has obtained a list of the Best Buy stores that will be running 50% off close-out sales on anime beginning March 1st (see “Best Buy’s New Anime Strategy”) (article link is at bottom of this post). The sale will run from March 1st to March 21st and allow these 460+ stores to reduce their SKU count dramatically, as part of the chain’s move to concentrate its anime efforts in stores where anime has performed best.

Here's a comprehensive article on Best Buy's new ANIME Strategy as mentioned at the top of this thread:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-02-20/best-buy-to-change-dvd-strategy

Finalized list: here.

I've got 2 stores in my area so hopefully I'll find some stuff of interest.

Also, animaniac provided this coupon which can be used with this sale:
Shigurui: Death Frenzy [2 Discs][Box Uncut] - DVD, why didnt know about this while sale was on to prerorder. Darn it.
Some people were able to get it at 50% off. I tried at two stores but couldn't get it at 50% off. So this was YMMV.
Yep, I can confirm that at my store the discount signs are down and the kiosk prices are back to full price. Looks like this sale is over...
I went to my local Best Buy today because I was curious if they would really stop the sale today; and as expected, the 50% off signs were taken down and seemed back to normal. Though I didn't stop there. I went to the kiosk and viola! 50% off all anime I could think of. I was pretty happy and to celebrate, I bought the Solty Rei Complete Collection for $25. I had a $15 gift card, so it worked out pretty well. I'm going to try checking back tomorrow to see if they updated the kiosk.

Full tally will be up soon.

I can't believe I ended up spending so much during this awesome sale!!! (There goes my federal tax refund and some extra spending money).

Between my apartment and my mom's house, I hit up 6 stores (Long Beach, Compton, East Orange, Jamboree, Irvine, Temecula) in 9 trips over the past week (5 of them yesterday). The Compton store last week had a great selection & the Temecula store an even better selection yesterday (seriously seems like nobody went to that one at all).

Here's my final haul:

Area 88 TV: Complete Series
Basilisk: Complete Series (Viridian)
Beserk: Complete Series
Black Blood Brothers: Complete Series
Black Lagoon: Complete 1st Season (Steelbook)
Bleach the Movie 1: Memories of Nobody
Coyote Ragtime Show Complete Series
Death Note Movie 1 (Live Action)
Dragon Ball GT: Season 1
Dragon Ball GT: Season 2
Dragon Ball Z: Season 2
Dragon Ball Z: Season 3
Dragon Ball Z: Season 8
Elfen Lied: Diclonius Report
Fate Stay Night Complete Series
Full Metal Alchemist: Complete Season 1
Full Metal Panic! Complete Series
Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid Complete Series
Gantz: Complete Series
Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Hellsing Ultimate vol 1 Limited Edition (Steelbook)
Kino's Journey: Complete Series
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi: Complete Series
Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Najica Blitz Tactics: Complete Series
Naruto the Movie 3: Guardians of the Crescent Moon Kingdom
Negima: Complete 1st Season (Viridian)
Negima: Spring & Summer OVA
Otogi Zoshi: Heian Arc Collection
Otogi Zoshi: Tokyo Arc Collection
School Rumble: Complete 1st Season
School Rumble: 2nd Season Part 2
Suzuka: Complete Series

Total $642.30

My biggest regret was not picking up the Trinity Blood complete set (with the artbooks) at the Temecula store yesterday, especially since it still would have been cheaper than the Viridian set that I've already seen on shelves at non-clearance Best Buy Stores (has a March 24th release date too). I'm just grateful I bankrupt myself with the great sale.

I forgot to mention this yesterday, but I checked my BB and everything waa full price again. Thing is, they still have a lot of anime so... here's hoping for another (BIGGER!) sale!
i finished watching some blurays i purchased during the sale so i selling these if somewant to buy send me a email [email protected] or pm

samurai 7 $30 and afro2 $15 gunbuster 15 diebuster 15
This I certainly do not understand whatsoever when you very well could have simply rented all those titles. It certainly would have been less expensive than buying them even at 50% off Best Buy's MRSP. I would assume what you paid at Best Buy is basically an expensive price tag for "brand new rentals". How much did you actually pay for those titles during the Best Buy sale?

1. Why didn't you simply rent these titles--it would certainly have been less expensive. Netflix? Blockbuster? Just curious. It would be interesting.

2. This makes me wonder whether Anime companies should consider putting out/create stuff that has actual replay value; it seems as though many anime titles simply get one viewing by fans, and they'd never go back. Companies, wonder why only a percentage of anime fans actually buy anime? Even though I buy all anime that I intend to watch, start making quality substance (with replay value) instead of pushing tens to hundreds of new anime titles per year when probably only a select few are stand outs with respect to units sold.

Makes sense to me, he probably payed this much for them, watched them and had no interest in keeping them. Now someone who wants these can get them for 50%, I say thank you to him. I know I would rather buy a series for 50% knowing I could get my money back, watch it and decide if I want to keep it. rather than rent it, watch it and want to own it but then the sale is over or they wise up to the Blu-Ray part.

I did take that into account.

Yes, in this situation, he could very well get his money back and probably more given the titles in question (minus a paypal transaction fee minus the time needed to complete the trade/sell transaction)

Sure, the smart thing to do certainly is to take advantage of the sale in case they all turned out to be keepers. I too would hate to kick myself in rear when a 50% off the listed price presented itself.

Let's just say for the sake of argument, for whatever mysterious reasons, he couldn't recuperate the funds through selling these titles (e.g. maybe some place somewhere is having a 75% off insane clearance, 90% insane clearance, or whatever, etc, etc.). That would in fact then be a pretty expensive rental load. Obviously hypothetical but still--there are in fact people who buy (having knowledge that they're not even going to keep the titles) and then sell them off.

I personally would have simply bought the titles (keeping in mind the 30 day return policy), simultaneously rent it through Netflix/Blockbuster/or whatever service, if I didn't like the titles, I could do one of two things:
1. Return them to the store (e.g. Best Buy's in this case)
2. Price them off at a higher price tag because they are still factory sealed. ( as I'm sure [most] people prefer new over used if costs are equivalent. )
3. Or CAG them off here at my acquisition price just to be a cool person.

Sounds ideal, but time and availabilty throws that path off.

It'd be pretty hard to pull off a buy/rent/watch/keep/return scenario if you happen to be one of those who blindly dropped a few hundred on multiple box sets with 13 - 26+ eps each. You can only do so much while the clock runs down on any given day.

50% off anime may be worth the gamble for potential keepers. I opted to be conservative and only bought two things because a lot of these shows are only rent worthy. YMMV.

i have seen all those movies already. i wanted to get anime on bluray and see if it was visually worth keeping in my collection for the upgrade price. i dont have netflix and my movie stores do not have anime on bluray. so i figured now would be the perfect time to get them with the 50% off , so whatever i didnt think was worth the price for bluray i could sell them and get my money or more back. i kept alot of things purchased

samurai 7 was not worth the price to me because of the constant banding it just did not look better to me over the dvd on my ps3.

afro2 i am only selling cause i have a free replacement one coming in the mail.

gunbuster/diebuster the movies were not that good to me.

so with the money i take back from these will go towards shigurui, skycrawlers, sword of stranger which i have all seen , so i hope the bluray is upto par

Snagged a few Best Buy bargain myself 50% off:

Afro Samurai Resurrection DVD
Devil May Cry Vol 3 DVD
Naruto Movie 2 DVD
Naruto Movie 3 DVD
Petshop Horrors DVD
Phoenix Collection 3 DVD
Ghost in the Shell Innocence (dubbed; finally) Steelbook DVD
...probably a couple others...don't remember.
...there were many wants but had to restrict (i.e. Death Note singles, Dragon Ball Z sets, etc).

Good to know. Hmm... so which anime titles are in fact worthy of Blu upgrade? I *may* need to do some investigation myself [if I ever decide to go Blu]

The above three mentioned [shingurui, skycrawlers, sword of stranger] are sure titles I want, and will be via DVD format. Probably won't cross over to Blu anytime soon, or for that matter ever. For some reason and whatever reason, I feel that Blu is a "transitional" format that's paving the way for something even better on the horizon, one example possibly being Ultra High Definition video.

Super Hi-Vision (SHV) [Ultra High Definition Video, UHDV, Extreme Definition Video, Ultra High Definition Television]

Super Hi-Vision (SHV), also known as , Ultra High Definition Video, UHDV, Extreme Definition Video, Ultra High Definition Television, UHDTV , UHD and 8K is an experimental digital video format, currently proposed by NHK of Japan, the BBC, and the RAI.

The new format with a resolution of 7680 × 4320 pixels is four times as wide and four times as high (for a total of 16 times the pixel resolution) as existing HDTV, which has a maximum resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications will be starting a public-private partnership to develop technology for SHV in the hopes of setting an international standard for Super Hi-Vision in addition to broadcasting with it beginning in 2015.

For some reason and whatever reason, I feel that Blu is a "transitional" format that's paving the way for something even better on the horizon, one example possibly being Ultra High Definition video.

even if they do release that, whatever player will be backwards compatible, im sure. and even if it does release it will be in japan for awhile before they decide to bring it to the states. and more than likely it will usher in the true age of everything being digital and no media, cause there is no way they will be able to fit all of that information on a bluray type media. i think its a waste anyway, theres noway anybody will be able to tell difference between full hd now and that uhdv maybe in a movie theater yes but at home. So when they do release they are going to have to come up with a gimmick to make people feel like they need it over bluray and that would only be it using downloads instant streams.

also akira on bluray is awesome just for the jap true hd audio if you have a great system. and visually, both afro samurai are good bluray. pretty much everyother anime bluray thats out right now are just upscaled to the bluray disc.

Trippy. I just got my Ghost In The Shell 2nd Gig Complete Collection. It didn't occur to me that a condensed Anime Legends hadn't been released yet, so it was a surprise to receive the full box that Amazon is selling for $89.99. I only paid $24.99 during this Best Buy sale. Thanks again Speedy.

Wow, nice deal.

Finally, the last one arrived (Evangelion) from the kiosk order.... so here are my personal selected aquistions:

BB50.jpg

Baki The Grappler $22.49
Berserk: Remastered $14.99
Black Lagoon $17.99
Cowboy Bebop Remix 6 Discs $19.99
Death Note: LE Vol. 7 $14.99
Death Note: LE Vol. 8 $14.99
Death Note: LE Vol. 9 $14.99
Elfen Lied: Diclonius Report $15.99
Guyver: Bio Boosted Armor $24.99
Evangelion: Perfect Collection $49.99
Trinity Blood: 6 Discs $34.99
Witchblade: The Complete Series $28.99

Total damages: $275.45

Question:

I have not seen Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion. Were these two worth enough to keep? or to store return? at those costs...

Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion are pretty popular titles. Don't watch the last two eps of Evangelion and watch the movies instead.

So anyone know if Le Cavilier is worth owning? I'm still wondering if it want to pick it up or not.

I'd say you did a pretty good job, although Evangelion for $50 is a little high.

I'm only 2 episodes into Le Cavalier and I went into it thinking the plot would be its strength. The plot is indeed good with some supernatural twists. What I was surprised about was the animation quality, which is above average.

Sorry to get OT but I just have to say I started Berserk 3 days ago and I'm already done. Holy crap that's a good show, I didn't want to stop watching. It's crazy you go into thinking it's going to be one thing, then it's something else, then at the end it goes completely crazy, I loved the ending!

What should I watch next?

Trinity Blood
Full Metal Alchemist
Witch Hunter Robin
or Twelve Kingdoms?

You won't be too happy about Berserks ending. (At least I wasn't)

As for what to watch next. Ummm depends what you want to watch?

12 kingdoms is still not done. Though I don't know when they will release the new series or if they will.

FMA has a really good story and fight scenes I think. I like that a lot personally.

WHR is just good magic fun story isn't too bad.

I would suggest FMA or WHR and then when you are bored and don't mind that 12 kingdoms isn't done watch that. All the anime is released but it seems the story was left hanging.

I have not seen Trinity Blood so I can't say about that.

I think a new season of FMA has also started.
I'm wondering, has anyone ever had a kiosk order canceled by BB? I got this notice on 2 back ordered DVDs and I'm afraid they'll back out on getting them for me.

Kujibiki Unbalance 1-2 [3 Discs]-Subtitle-DVD
Status: Backordered

Ranma 1/2: Season 7-DVD
Status: Backordered
If anyone remembers this post, they finally got my Ranma 1/2 and shipped it today. I honestly did not expect them to do it. No word about the Kujibiki Unbalance though, which is the one I really wanted the most. I noted that my best buy still has anime and even got new titles in after the sale, one of which I would have bought on sale if it was there last week. So now I'm wondering what the sale was all about really...

Twelve Kingdoms is, for all intents and purposes, done. There are no more episodes in existence, nor are there any plans to revive the series. I think a better way to describe it would be "incomplete," in comparison to the novels that the show was based on.
What should I watch next?

Fullmetal Alchemist. Put off Trinity Blood for as long as you can... or just return it.

I'm still waiting for Record of Lodoss War from the kiosk. I forgot to go on the last day and order a few more. Such a shame... >_

Note: I haven't had the pleasure of watching any of the above series in full, but have skimmed through anime viewers' recommendation on each. I have seen clips (for animation purposes).

I would probably approach this by watching the least praised series first. I believe it's better to watch something subpar first, then move on to some extraordinary. Trinity Blood has mixed reviews as do Witch Hunter Robin. I would reserve Full Metal Alchemist and Twelve Kingdoms for later. From what little I have seen of the series, Twelve Kingdom's animation trumps Full Metal Alchemist. However, I also found Witch Hunter Robin's animation to be rather well done by anime standards.

I would probably watch them in this order (reserve the "best/better one" for last):
1. Trinity Blood
2. Witch Hunter Robin
3. Full Metal Alchemist
4. Twelve Kingdoms

Whether digital will entirely replace physical media is unknown at this point.

Unless the entertainment/media community see no point in owning hard, tangible copies of their favorite films, physical media will always be desirable.

UHDV or whatever is in the works may in fact topple existing true High Definition. Roll back times and hard drive capacities were complete crud compared to what's available today. Technological advancements is an ongoing phenomenon--what we perceived as impossible one day may be completely possible the next. Human nature constantly strives for the impossible.

If you can't fill something on Blu-Ray type media, you develop "Black"-Ray Media to meet data demand.

How certain can you say UHDV or something even more remarkable won't completely trump existing full High Definition? The difference may just be astoundingly mind blowing and put existing HD to shame. When and if that historic day comes, I certainly think it will be worth the upgrade cost. But at the moment, sure the added detailed touch Blu offers is cool, but Blu certainly can't make a crap film great.

Blu will make films visually better. However, the content (e.g. film/movie plot) will remain unchanged. Blu will not take a 5/10 star film and make it a 10/10 star film. In that sense, Blu is a "gimmick."
Didn't they stop making that? If not, I'd love to buy it. One of my favorites!
I'm sure it's out of print, but they must have at least something for them to keep it up on the site. It was only 16.99 for the complete series during the sale. I missed out on the series, so I figured this was my chance. I'm pissed that I missed ordering the GITS series, Escaflowne, and a couple others. I've gone so long without buying anime, and this will probably be my last for awhile again.

I'm about done with Elfen Lied, and I'd be interested in trading it for some other anime I missed.

I may be in a minority on this, but Twelve Kingdoms, while it has a lot of good stuff in it, can also be slow-paced and boring. Keep in mind that I tend to like character-driven, slower-paced stories, but I couldn't finish Twelve Kingdoms.

When it's good, it's very effective. The characters are compelling, there's genuine growth and change, and the situations are not just stuff we've seen a billion times. It's a very realistic take on what it would be like to fall into another world, and it takes a bunch of fantasy cliches and subverts them wonderfully.

Sometimes, though, it drags interminably and is repetitive. Some of the characters are less compelling than others, and when the story starts following them and it drags, it can be a bit much.

This is not to dissuade you from watching it, but be careful not to pile too many expectations on it.
So are the stores that had the anime sale not carrying any anime any longer?
They still do. Probably just wanted to move some stock.
They still do. Probably just wanted to move some stock.
Yep, they probably wanted to move what product they could before the end of fiscal.

They Still carry anime. But they wanted to get ride of stock and change there business model about the anime they carry. These stores will only carry the top anime. While other stores will still carry most that is available.

I went to the best buy in Dorchester, MA a couple days ago and they still had the 50% off signs so I ended up spending another $50, but after they changed the price for me, they took the signs down.

all my store took the signs down like a week before. Not that it mattered cause they only counted anime that rang up 50% and if it didn't and was clearly anime made up some excuse.

Whoa! I'm surprised with Best Buy.
They are actually fulfilling my back orders. The only one left is Excel Saga.

I returned both Naruto Movies. I can't justify 15 dollars for them.

Local best buy moved product also. With the increase is Sales Tax, I see less money being spent, so hopefully we have a sale soon :)

They filled my last back order today for Kujibiki Unbalance. I thought for sure they would end up canceling it. I'm sort of wishing they would have another 50% off sale, as they have two new ones at the store that I'm interested in. Ah My Buddha and some un-dubbed comedy about otaku that makes doujinshi. I noticed that the pre-order DVDs I ordered (One Piece 4 and Negima?! 2) which is new this week was NOT at the store as new releases. So I'm wondering why they are getting in some new ones are in which obviously WON'T sell and not getting the ones that should sell at least 1 copy at the store (like One Piece and Negima).

ONE piece dvd sets 3 that ordered by shipped came in last week in perfect shape. ONE piece dvd set 4 that was preordered got email from bestbuy.com saying it now ready to pickup. didn't check to see if they had it in stock. so when there at 5:00pm to get it and they looking for behind the counter and can't find it . she call someone to getit from the anime section 5 or more min. go by nothing yet . a few more min, the guy come and say he check the anime section and the in the back and they do not HAVE it. the guy says they get it and ship it from another BB in the area and it will take about a week and ask me if that what i want and say sure. went home and looked at BB SITE for one that it. the 4 bestbuy closest to me did not have them . the ones that did was 35 miles or more away. it coming from Warwick,RI to
Dartmouth,MA

today i got a phonecall from BB about my order. they got my preorder DVD early and it ready for pickup today Wow that fast. only had to wait 2 days instead of 7 days. so today got ONE piece dvd set 4. that dvd I ordered
Out of the 13 titles I kiosk-ordered I'm just waiting on one title, Samurai X OVA Collection
I've been waiting for Samurai X OVA since about Mar 10. I got an email the other day saying it will be canceled soon if it does not become available. Good luck getting yours. I don't see myself receiving it. If you do get let me know please.

Avoid Ah My Buddha as much as possible. It fails on every level. If you want harem style anime there are SO many better ones out there.
