The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

Hmm...not 100% sure. I usually just check the PSN store's listing and assume that that is the same languages included with the physical release. Truth be told, I've never seen a game in Germany only released in the German language outside of those exclusive to German audiences (like Schlag den Raab for PS3, based on a German TV show) or maybe those ski jumping games that came out there for PS2. Kyurinaga's Revenge has only English and Spanish language options, it just so happens the physical copy seems to be releasing in Germany first. I think you'd be safe to order the German copy if you wanted to.

Only NTSC/PAL game for PS4 I know that is definitely not in English is Atrapa la Bandera, released only in Spain. Tadeo Jones y el Manuscrito Perdido was also only released in Spain but (amazingly) is entirely in English.
Nice ! Apparently you're 90% sure these German games will be in English ; but if anyone ends up buying one, I'd be very grateful if s.he could confirm it is for sure =)

I had never thought to monitor amazon.de for exclusive physical releases before, nice catch y'all :D

According to this post, the game plus Limited Edition bonus goodie (whatever that is) will go live on Amazon on its release date. Other than that only Play Asia and VGP are taking preorders (with possibly more retailers to come though I wouldn't count on it).
Well now I kinda regret preordering it on Play Asia... weird to hide what the goodies will be.

At least P-A's shipping is fair for international buyers.

iam8bit is finally shipping out REZ Infinite. 3,000 copies, you can still order them
I'm waiting for it ! Even if it is subpar, it is better than nothing I guess... plus, at 3000 copies, it will be pretty rare. Where have you found that figure though ?

Like most others, I have received very little info on Rez throughout this whole process and now that it's apparently finished I have yet to receive any shipping notification or confirmation of any kind.

I'm going to wait on passing any final judgment until I get the game, but thus far I will say the way Iam8Bit has handled this release makes me really appreciate the way LRG does things.

My guess is it will probably be something small, like the keychain that was offered with the Amazon version of River City Tokyo Rumble sold by Natsume. Guess we will find out within a few weeks though!

Also I would assume that Amazon will discount Wild Guns Reloaded for Prime members, I'm hoping to get it that way. Was very tempted to order from PA or VGP but I'll wait to see if that happens.

So... to potentially add salt to everything, it looks like it doesn't have the foil cover like originally promised...

Edit*, I don't know how to post a individual tweet link but a few other people seem to be saying the same thing: pictures look like no foil cover.

Where did you get this number from? I swear they sold more than that during the preorder window.
Yeah, that number seems pretty low...

I don't think we'll be getting the Prime discount. When Amazon had River City Tokyo Rumble the seller was Natsume and no discount was applied. It would be great to get the discount but I'm sure Natsume will just use Amazon to fill orders again for Wild Guns.It was nice seeing River City Tokyo Rumble listed at $29.99 when Natsume could of pushed it for $39.99. I can't wait for Wild Guns as I almost ordered from Play Asia.

100% this ^

OK well it's no big deal, $29.99 is very reasonable to begin with, and the game looks fantastic. Thanks for the info.

I could have swore it was on the preorder page but I don't see it there now, so either I confused it with something else or it once was there (accidentally?). Funny how I'm so sure I read it somewhere on their page though...

Well and another thing that makes me even more sure that these releases are likely not in German-only is that if they were, they'd be an entirely different set of game code (to allow for the inclusion of the German language and/or omit other languages) on the disk, which (if you follow sites like psnprofiles) would result in an extra "stackable" set of trophies (meaning you could essentially earn trophies twice for the same game). It is pretty rare to see PAL games get separated in this manner, since they all usually have the same game disc, just different boxes.

I honestly never worry about it. I recently ordered Moto Racer 4 off of Amazon.es. The box back is all in Spanish and Italian. The game is entirely in English from the get-go though... Even if these games came with other language options, I couldn't see them ever omitting the English option for a particular region.

I think a press release mentioned that something Rez related was limited to 3,000 copies. Maybe the vinyl? I don't know. AFAIK no numbers were put on the game.

Do you know what happened to the cover artwork for Rez? The version pictured on their website has color in the logo and figure, but the final version just looks like they completely left out the colors during the printing.

My copy of Rez came in today and my only complaint is the psvr stuff on the bottom right. I'm keeping it sealed so I can't confirm the quality inside.

They've said through Twitter that they printed some test covers with the gradient and it didn't come out right. I can totally understand that - sometimes things look much better on a screen than in reality.

OK thanks for the info. They really should have put a little more effort into the design of the cover imo, it looks dull and soulless. With all the psychedelic colors in the game, having a boring stick figure on a black background looks awful.

Does anyone own Battle Worlds: Kronos for PS4, and did their copy come with a manual? I bought a preowned copy from GameStop during today's buy 2, get 1 free sale as one of my $9.99 games, but it didn't come with a manual. I only ask because the copy of Divinity: Original Sin that I bought for PS4 came with a manual.

There's no manual, I watched a few unboxing videos.

Quick question: I'm planning on pre-ordering a rose in the twilight for vita and The Silver Case from the NiS store. Do they charge now or when they ship?

The Silver Case is available from Amazon now, free shipping and the prime discount applies as well

Was also thinking about A Rose in the Twilight so I just checked their site and I believe you will "only be billed when your item is shipped or when your order is printed if it is a preorder." but you probably will see a temporary transaction on your account while they authorize your card. "the pending transaction will disappear within 2-10 days". You can find all the information here - http://store.nisamerica.com/help

Does it include the $50 bundle? Thought it was just the game itself there.
The CE is only available at NISA's online store... Amazon listing is just the game.

They charge a week before they actually ship. If you guys combine order, be warned that they don't ship until everything is available.

Runbow (WiiU) is currently on sale for $19.99 at Best Buy ($15.99 after GCU).  I can't imagine the print run was very big for that game.

Got REZ and Stealth, Inc in the mail this week. Looks like LRG is shipping Black Friday stuff now (mine went out today).

Love this game.

The story mode has some pretty intense story lines.
Did you buy the physical copy? On the Amazon page it talks about preorder DLC and I'm just wondering if I'll get lucky and have the code in box or if I actually had to preorder it.

I did buy the physical copy but it was from a sale at Best Buy. I don't remember any dlc being included.

Wild Guns Reloaded is supposed to go live on the Natsume Amazon store sometime on 12/20.  Please post here when it does as there is currently a listing on Amazon but its a version being sold by Deal Tavern (without the Natsume bonus item).

Oooh, thanks for the reminder. I completely forgot it was supposed to go live on the 20th. Anyone happen to remember the time Natsume put River City up roughly? I missed that one and had to go thru VGP so I'm not sure, but they might put this up at about the same time as they did that.

Netsume put it up the day before last time around mid-day, so I don't think that's a good guide for tomorrow' sale.

Thanks! Ordered one.

Any idea what time this went live?
Have no idea, just checked around 6 this morning and it was there. I wasn't able to find it through a normal search though, I had to go to Natsume's Amazon storefront then look at all their items for sale to find it.

If you missed out on Wild Guns Reloaded on Amazon, don't forget VGP also got the game but without the keychain.  That's the path I ended up having to take to get River City Tokyo Rumble.  Remember the price is canadian but it comes out to $29 and change after the conversion so it's the same basic price (no tax but added shipping).

It sucks Natsume can't just publish enough copies to satisfy the demand.

Anybody know if Natsume ever restocks this sort of thing? Would really prefer to grab it on Amazon if possible...
They did one restock for River City... but it was something like a month or more after launch on a random day and it lasted a very short time as well. One of the reps posts over on the gamefaqs forums for each of their game launches so I'd check there to see if a second print is being mentioned.

My copy of River City TR worked out fine from VGP. It was better to get a copy for near launch price than frustratingly wait for a second print and risk not even getting the game.

Good to know, thanks! This was just a question of convenience so I'll likely just grab from PA or VGP. I know VGP was showing different cover art at one point but I'm guessing that was just placeholder and theres only one production run of this, right?
