The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

I passed out last night after noticing I couldn't order a copy of Blue Rider. I thought it might have sold out. Now I see there was some big clusterfuck last night.

1 AM ET if I'm not mistaken by their email.
Damn, I hope they do better the second time. I just happened to have a little free time last night, so I ended up spending more of it than I should have dealing with their rather late start. If I was up at 1am doing that shit, I would have stopped after a few minutes and went to bed.

I love how they announced a specific time, and then at that time, they sent an email saying they would start in 10 minutes, which was another lie. Why give times, and then don't use them? I don't mind a few minutes late, but 10-20 is out of line.

Well, they tried, failed, admitted the failure and are going to try again after more testing.

It just goes to show all the website breaking, cart emptying, random bs issues that LRG has with these things is just common for the black friday type limited sales.  It'll be interesting if PA can fix the issues and actually figure out how to do this stuff efficiently.

I'm just glad I have no interest in Blue Rider.

It wouldn't be a nightc1 post if there wasn't a slam against LRG somewhere in there. Play Asia is a long-time retailer so if anything, it just shows how amazing LRG has been this whole time given how few problems they have had as a completely new company selling a limited product in a volume and manner that hasn't been done for video games previously.

Yeah, I have to agree, as most things PA offers to sale, are often very limited and only up for a short time. Maybe not this bad, but still something they should have tons of experience dealing with. They just dropped the ball in this situation big time.

It wouldn't be a bojay1997 post without rushing to the defense of anything said about LRG. Calm down dude, your fandom is clouding your ability to have a reasonable conversation.

LRG is the best in the business when it comes to these black friday style limited release sales. The best. No question. No argument out of me. They have done a solid job going from an obscure indie developer to being a publisher of games. Kudos to them. BUT, they aren't perfect and there are issues during every single sale on the CUSTOMER end. It's part of the issue every company is going to have that does this stuff. There is room to improve the customer experience. PA just learned how this stuff goes the hard way.

Being a Long Time Retailer doesn't exactly qualify any company to be able to handle the kind of traffic a sale like this generates. EVERY site, Amazon, Walmart, and so on that has crazy rush style deals ends up having major issues when the masses descend to add items to their resell inventories and game collections.

Back to PA's attempt for a second. The email address thing certainly complicates processing orders, but it also appears to be an attempt at a solution of putting more games in the hands of gamers rather than just resellers. What I find interesting is they didn't just do this with some garbage game, but took something that has fans and is in a genre full of rabid fans. It's like they went for the worst case scenario for testing their infrastructure rather than easing into it with something of questionable quality or sales potential. It was bound to break the site.

It'll be interesting if PA's efforts end up improving the customer experience. This is a pretty complicated and messy business to handle. They aren't just looking to cater to resellers to drive sale numbers but are instead looking to build the customer base for the main site. So customer satisfaction and feedback has to be a lot more important to PA as they want repeat business for non-limited deals.

Kudos to nightc1, very civilized comment and insightful, thumbs up.

And that FFXII Zodiac Age CE is $200....  Oh man, at least show us the cover of the steelbook and the art cards.  No info on the bust sizes too...

Sorry, just have to add to the confusion here...

Good day! Sorry for the confusion. Please be informed that we already got
an authorization from your card for $34.98. We will collect the actual
charge once the order is ready for shipping.
Just received from Play-Asia re Blue Rider. So I guess if your order went through then you don't need to worry about the 13th.

I got my order through but didn't get this email. Hope I didn't screw it up.

I know that, but it would be nice to get a version specific to the North American region.
There's been no information given. They have the US rating in the ad, so that would imply they are doing a US one as well, but until an announcement is made, there's no way to know 100%. I'm sure once it is offered, or when it get's closer, more information will be given.

This is another area where I like LRG over the competitors. Badland announces something like AV physical, and then it's months away, maybe more. I believe quarter 2 is the time frame, but that could be April, May or June, and it could still be late. I see no reason to announce it so soon, and then not have any specifics. All that does is keep the digital from selling, as those who want physical will just continue to wait.

I agree on your second point. I don't know how many times other publishers have delayed smaller releases by months or years. I've had games like Road Rage and Valhalla Hills preordered since last year and the release dates keep getting pushed back. As for Axiom Verge, I know at least one person on another forum reached out to Thomas Happ and he confirmed it will be getting a US release physically on consoles through the same publisher doing the European version.

It wasn't an automatic email they sent out. The only reason I got it is because I wrote to them and asked if my order went through. (At least they responded. Nothing worse than a post-fuckup silence.)

So I guess Blue Rider sales opened up early and instantaneously sold out :p. Started watching the play asia page around 12:55 am with the preorder supposedly opening at 1 am EST and it already said "our allocations have been presold". Was hoping it was an error, but it hasn't changed since so I guess I missed it which blows since I stayed up for it.

I'm EST so it was supposed to go live 18 minutes ago at 1 AM must have went live around 12:50 or earlier though since it was saying sold out when I showed up around 12:55 am.

Day light savings can go fuck itself so hard lol.

Confused me since it was saying available "soon" till it suddenly switched to this. Wouldn't have bothered staying up till 2am for this but since I'm already up might as well :p.

went ahead and placed an additional order since I'm not placing faith in the 'we only charged people for shipping cuz our cart software is junk' system

West coast here and Blue Rider was supposed to go live at 10pm. Didn't go live until 11pm. Ordered 2.

I picked up two copies. Hoping, if this game becomes "one of those", that I can maybe trade it for a copy of Breach & Clear, or something similar :p

Not sure how I could have gone through check out any faster. Still couldn't keep the game in my cart until the end. Congratulations to people who got multiple orders in somehow. =/

Well I missed Blue Rider.... uggg. Hope it goes to people who like the game. I've never played it but I'm going for around a %90+ complete ps4 collection. Congratz to those who got their orders in! :D/

Edit: Just a hunch but there could be a re release of Blue Rider from the pages information

Blue Rider will get its first physical version exclusively at Play-Asia.com

I was just able to add to cart so it is still available.  For those having trouble did you pre-register?

I am sitting at confirmation debating if I really want to start limited runs with another company...

Anyone actually play this?
