The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

Nobody knows...but why would you want them on PS4 anyway if you have both? With Switch they can be taken on the go as well, and it's not as if any run better on PS4.

Also, carts are just an inherently superior medium for those who buy physical.
I don't have a Switch, yet, though I intend to buy one. Anyway, I'm a pretty OCD collector. The PS4 has, for the most part, become my niche/indie console. I prefer to keep my collection as organized as I can in terms of what games go on certain platforms.

sigh... still waiting on Special Reserve Games to ship my PS4 Strafe. ive been emailing them every week. only one response saying they gonna look into it. ridiculous

I'm in the same boat. I haven't receive my bundle and they won't reply to emails or anything. Last I heard from them was nearly a month ago and them saying that their "shipping department" was preparing my order for shipment.

WOW, Special Reserves sounds like they need to shape up quick, if they plan to make a run of these limited titles. Poor customer service is the fastest way to "going out of business", and shipping and answering emails in a timely fashion should be a given.

Yeah, I'm never buying from them again.  I'd rather not have the game than deal with this stuff.

Best case I'll go through LRG.

Literally the exact same thing happened to me. I was gonna email them again today. But, damn, if it isn't discouraging to hear that you've been trying WAY harder than me ( I only emailed twice like a month-3weeks ago, was told 'shipping department was on it') and having no results. :(

I've been messaging them on facebook and twitter, and emailing them from 2 different email accounts (I ordered with one email, which they have NEVER replied to any emails coming from that account. The other email they actually responded to even though I didn't order with that email.) I email and message them at least 2 times a week. So I've got one of those email chains that makes me look like a creepy stalker because I keep replying with no response over the course of 2 months.

i hope they dont cancel my Strafe and refund me.
At this point, I hope they refund me.

Maybe you guys should try other means to reach them. I've come to realize that most places basically no longer give a shit about you unless you Tweet them...

I don't personally use Twitter but any time there's a problem, it just seems like Twitter gets the best results.

Need some help. I got an email from Play-Asia saying that they accidentally refunded me for Ghost Blade HD and wants me to re-order it. The order says waiting for payment and I don't know how to pay it off for that. Do I need to make a new separate order?

You may have missed my post above since you posted the same time I did... but I have been messaging them on Twitter. That was in fact how I got them to initially respond to my emails... mind you it wasn't until like the 30th tweet from me that they actually acknowledged me.

I don't think they are actually processing support requests unless they see you complaining at them on social media.

I had problems with their website when trying to order my copy of Strafe, and it took 3 weeks for them to answer that customer support email, so hearing this stuff isn't surprising to me. I live in Austin, Texas, which is where they apparently office from and where my copy of Strafe came from (about 5 miles from my house). If they need more people I'm glad to quit my job and work for them if they can match my current employers pay.

Maybe they are looking here, because they literally just replied to my email letting me know that it should've shipped 2 weeks ago and they will "escalate".

*shrug*

Also, still fighting Sanborns for a refund.

I personally don't have any social media accounts, but I have seen in the past where consumer issues online are often addressed faster in those situations, due to the public viewing of said issues. Since I don't use twitter, facebook, ect, emails are top shelf, and if you can't reach someone through that avenue, they shouldn't be in business.

As an example, I requested my orders for Slain be combined over at Signature Edition Games, and I got a reply right away, and said no problem. Of course, the game was delayed, so when it finally shipped, they separated my order, and of course one arrived damaged. Which was the reason I ordered two copies in the first place, as I was hoping for better packaging.

I replied back to my first contact, and within a day(maybe a few hours), he replied back, set up another order, and made sure it was shipped in a box. Within a week, I had a replacement, and had gotten replies within 24 hrs each time. Now Signature Games seems to have the most new releases behind that of LRG, and maybe Play-Asia, and I was more than pleased with the service I received.

Special Reserves seems to have one title currently to deal with, and can't seem to get it right, so thinking that will improve in the future, seems a fools errand at this point. They better shape up quick, or their business will be over and done before it begins. Even if one person was answering emails for this one game, how long should that realistically take? This just seems like a rather poor effort on their part.

It's a rough life trying to track down all these limited games. Haha.

I haven't gotten any response from Sanborns yet either. Guess I'll need to go escalate my dispute to a claim.

That's where I'm sitting. Paypal won't do anything before July 20th right now.

Same here. Looks like it affected a lot of people.

I couldn't find any way to "settle payment" either so I just replied to their email telling them that. It seems stupid to offer a solution people can't perform because your system doesn't even allow those functions.

I escalated mine four or five days after it was marked as canceled and I heard nothing from Sanborns. Today is the last day PayPal has given them to respond, and I've still seen nothing from them. Hopefully PayPal can automatically return my money to me tomorrow (never had to escalate a case, so I have no idea how quick they are after being ignored by a seller).

Mine was until July 9th. Just got an email from PayPal today saying my refund went through.

Got the same email. Mailed them back telling them I didnt understand what they wanted me to do. We shall see..

:( Yeah.

Anyway, SRG claims my order is packed and ready to ship.  Gave me tracking.  So we'll see if it ever gets shipped out.

Play Asia cancelled my pre-order again too.... they really need to get their shit together though with these limited edition releases. I've order 4 from them, and 2 of the orders they've screwed up, and then their crappy customer service just makes things worse.... makes you appreciate LRG :)

Maybe they have someone that lurks here. lol

I got an update today too. Fingers Crossed.

"Thank you for your patience while our shipper investigated a large pile of missing orders and cleared them for reshipment.
They have prepared the other PS4 copy shipment and here is the tracking number: XXXXXX
It'll show up active once the truck leaves the warehouse today.

While you wait for it to arrive, we would like to apologize with a Steam key for another Devolver game if you'd like. We have some for Shadow Warrior 2 Complete Pack, or Enter the Gungeon, Downwell, Broforce...are any of those of interest to you?

Thank you,
SRG"

Bug them if you still need help!!

EDIT: They emailed me my code within 5 minutes of replying and it was for the 'Shadow Warrior Complete Pack' As-in SW1, SW2, SW ClassicRE and all the DLC... ?!?!??!!

Also, I gotta give Play-Asia some praise amongst this storm of payment bullshit.

I had 2 orders with pre-orders that got pushed back (Patapon and Wonder Boy) and they combined them to get my stuff to me.

Shipping confirmation on the 6th and got it today. DEFINITELY the fastest turnaround time for PA I've had.

I got my Cursed Castillia finally!!!!

Wait, your Patapon and Wonder Boy shipped? Mine were both delayed until August.

Patapon and Wonder Boy are the 2 that got pushed back as you pointed out. They cut those 2 out (THEY made a new order actually) and sent my stuff that was ready to go.

Today, I got: Sexy Brutale, DMC4 PS4, LocoRoco and CC!!

Ohhhh, okay, that makes more sense. Cool that they're starting to do this, but it seems like everything I have orders in for is getting delayed. :whistle2:(

i got the same email, dont know what to do.
ghost blade hd didn't sell out right?
I'm thinking just screwing it & waiting for LRG's version since they said they'd match the price & packaging.

Heavy Rain/Beyond Two Souls North American version for PS4. It looks like I'm the only one whose order got fulfilled.
My order is listed as being sent, but I haven't received anything yet. It's kind of surprising since my orders usually arrive very quickly from them.

Log into your account at Play-asia.com. Under my orders there is click here for more details. It should bring up a list of your orders. On the right side there is a pay button for any order that requires payment.

Right now payment by Paypal is the only option as they are having credit card processing issues.

Count me as another one that Play-Asia messed up the order of Ghost Blade.  Did anyone that paid by credit card get fulfilled for this?  At this point I may just skip it all together and go with the LRG release as Play-Asia can't seem to get their shit together.

I paid by CC and got the same email. I'm waiting to see the refund come through before I re-pay for it.

Has it been determined whether Lost Sphear is a Square Enix store exclusive or if Square Enix is the only place that currently has it up for preorder yet?

I was looking over the product description and it doesn't mention anything about the game itself being a Square Enix store exclusive.  I'd rather buy it at Best Buy obviously with a GCU discount.

Also a Switch physical version has been listed along with the PS4 version.
