The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

Don't forget that Sine Mora EX is out today! I'm heading into Gamestop to grab one. $20 for a physical copy of that is a nice little deal.
I preordered my copy from Amazon and they sold it to someone else. They sent me an email asking me if I still wanted it :(

Looks like Amazon oversold a video game yet again. I preordered with release date delivery 3 months ago and no movement at all on my order. Really frustrating since Best Buy never had this for preorder.

No movement on my copy of Sine Mora Ex from Amazon either :( I also preordered 3 months ago.  It looks like most the gamestops near me have copies at least.

Similar thing happening to my copy of Aven Colony at Best Buy.  I preordered for store pick up back when it went up.  Then on the 1st, i got a msg they sold at my local store :(  I have tried changing it to shipping a bunch of times but it never actually changes.  I'm really looking forward to that game, so I guess I'll need to call them to get it sorted out.

I've always been of the opinion that homebrew games don't count. I think most collectors probably feel the same.
This.

These are like repro games. They aren't official retail releases and the boxes won't even be legit.

If you didn't draw the line somewhere you might as well chase every 1 off "custom" amiibo and custom video game sticker/case till the end of time.

FWIW I only care for retail releases too so I'm not chasing prototypes and competition cartridges and anything like that either.

Thanks for caring though!

Personally, if it doesn't have the Nintendo/Sega seal or an official item number, I don't count it.

The numbers on the bottom of the spine of the LRG games, are those official PS4 item numbers or something else? Like the PS1/2 SLUS-#### and stuff. I notice most PS4 games have CUSA-####
NA region releases from Sony now have what's called a Pack SKU on the spine bottom. Since October 2015, CUSA and PCSE numbers have only been on the disc and cart. All of our releases have the official Sony Pack SKUs on the spine.

Possibly, but if Gamestop can secure in-store stock on release date than Amazon should be able to as well.
This happens very frequently with niche games on Amazon. Amazon doesn't have just one or two major shipping facilities like Gamestop and they don't necessarily give priority processing to games like this from a smaller publisher once stock comes in. I suspect Amazon will ship in the next few days as inventory trickles in. Personally I don't have a problem waiting considering Amazon provided 20% off on this title.

So do the LRG disc/carts have the CUSA/PCSE numbers on them?

Limited Run has investigated the Chris account to no avail. There had been a decent amount of communication about it in the LRG thread. If a choice is made to not support LRG due to this guy, I.m.o. it's a poor one.

Man this took forever. I know that Strafe took a while to ship but have they always been like this?
They held the game release for some patching and then they got hit with the Sony peak season pressing delays. This is only their second release (well, third if you count the original PC SW2 release a year or so back).

It was delayed to include the Day One patch on the disc. Personally I have no problem with delaying a game to include a more complete version on the disc, and I ordered the standard edition plus one of the bundles. Under the circumstances it's better to wait for the release.

Had no idea that was the reason why, I have no problem waiting for something like that either.

I sorta miss days when games couldn't be patched.

Vanish + X Zone anyone?

Final Fantasy that one square you could fight high level enemies at the start of the game and power level?

I love stuff like that.

Now days those kinds of things are socially shunned and patched 15 times a day.

Mines not coming till September :/

in regards to that european physical listing, there was a Sonic live stream this morning that confirmed there is NOT a current physical, but they are pushing the higher ups to do it and acknowledge there is demand

I think they are getting closer, he has a fake return label but tracking shows he's shipping from 90012 area code.
Isn't a fake return address starting to get into mail fraud (if he's using someones address he's not given permission to use. Like I can't just use Mcdonalds as my return address if I'm stealthing on ebay and call it legal to do)? Not that I care what chris does, but something I wouldn't do to cover my butt in getting around some game limit. He should at least go the PO box route and street address it. That way your not facing the postal police. I know that sounds like a joke yet it's a real thing and they go after the stupidest stuff. Also the chris stuff will take care of it's self eventually. As he's selling too far in advance and in the same auction some of his buyers are paying 90 then a day later he drops the price and others getting it far less. What that means is he's going to end up with a lot of pissed off buyers, returns, and low stars when some kid yells hey 5 hours ago this was 90 now it's 60 I want a refund.

I forgot all about Sine Mora but ordered a copy from Amazon last night. Website states it will take 2-5 weeks to ship which is fine as long as I get it. It's not like I don't have 100 other games in my backlog to play.

Same thing happened to me, I slacked off on preordering it so I placed a late order for one on each platform. It may not have a big production run and may be harder to find later.

Also don't forget about Raiden V, not widely available for preorder and still includes the Prime discount. Amazon said they wouldn't be offering Prime discount for collector's editions in the future, but this is a cheaper CE so probably not included in that:

Yeah I preordered Raiden about a month ago already. It was higher up on my radar due to me playing the past entries in that series. I've never played a Sine Mora game, but it looks good.

Yeah, the discount will likely stay though if they take it away I believe Bull Moose has this listed for $35.97 and no tax (for most), which is almost as good as the Prime discount.

Would've been cool if the Wii U version had made it here. I get that the platform is dead but that would have been a nice send off.

The devs stated that they're still planning on bringing it physical to the west, they're just looking for different distributors since more traditional ones have shunned it, unless something has changed in the last several days.

Why don't you guys hop on it? lol

Axiom Verge is now available for preorder at Best Buy (PS4, Vita, Switch):

The "Multiverse Edition" is $29.99 (23.99 with GCU) and the standard edition (PS4 only) is $19.99 (15.99 with GCU). These were "coming soon" until today.
Wonder why the Switch multiverse edtion isn't on best buy yet, Amazon has it but I'd much rather give BB my money

Thanks for the heads up on Axiom Verge. Still waiting on velocity 2X: Critical Mass Edition to come out of "Coming Soon" status.

GameStop stealth released City Skylines physical for PS4 today 8/15. I first noticed it got added this week when looking for The Sexy Brutale which got bumped from 8/15 to 8/29.

It was previously appearing as XBO only back with their last batch of exclusives.

Leave it to GameStop to go after exclusives/monopolies instead of competing.

I wasn't sure if this was releasing this week or not since the website wasn't clear when I looked at it on Monday. I had it preordered but lately the local store has not been notifying me when stuff comes in. Guess I will make a trip out there today or tomorrow to pick it up.

Troll and I is a horrible buggy mess on the Switch:/ someone I follow on Twitter got it and within the first 20 minutes his game locked and every time he reloaded the save it was a complete mess. Missing textures, falling into the earth, etc. he had to completely delete his data and reinstall to fix it.

That's annoying. I have an instore preorder and was told the 25th :( i know GS only "holds" preorders for 48 hrs. I've never tried to pick one up out of that time period. I'm sure it will be fine, since I'm probably the only one that ordered it lol.

Thanks for the heads up tho! I'm actually really looking forward to this game :)

Have to be careful with Gamestop.

Order online and they bend the hell out of or even crack the case running it though their glue paper rollers.

Don't preorder for store pickup either they might only get one copy and you know what that means.

Such a shitty place to buy games.  They've been trying harder than ever to lock up exclusives this year.
