The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

I don't think we have confirmation it won't but no other Iam8bit releases have been sold at Best Buy as far as I know. Gang Beasts was re-released through Skybound Games and that version was sold at BB, but the Iam8bit version was not.

VG Plus in Canada does seem to carry most of their releases though, for a similar price.
VGP specifically told me they will have Wattam

$40 for 2 remastered games and a sweet looking steelbook is a great deal. LRG wouldve charged at least $60. they would add a soundtrack, folded poster and some garbage sticker / cards to make it $80.

Has anyone gotten their Arcade Distillery Vita games yet? My last email is from October asking if I want a autograph from Luc....then nothing.

Not sure if this is sufficiently obscure/indie (please don’t flame me too bad if it isn’t), but Best Buy has currently discounted The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 2 Relentless Edition to $29.99 (normally $49.99). Published by XSeed and includes a steelbook, among other things.

Link’s here, for anyone interested: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/the-legend-of-heroes-trails-of-cold-steel-ii-relentless-edition-playstation-4/6311907.p?skuId=6311907

All in all, not a bad deal for what’s included for those late to the series, and still having GCU could sweeten the deal further to $23.99.

Gamestop DOTD today is Bard's Tale IV for $16 (PS4, XB1) and Northgard for $16 (PS4/XB1)/$20 (Switch).

Really hope Amazon matches Bard's Tale IV is there is nothing else I want to get free shipping.  Amazon has matched Northgard for Switch now though.

GS temporarily is offering DotDs in-store right now, so you could get a copy from a store in your area today without having to worry about the free shipping threshold.

Did anyone who back Battle Princess Madeylin get the correct KS exclusive cover from LRG? I'm confused as to what the KS exclusive cover is vs what the regular LRG cover is...

I also love the email that was sent out.

I believe everyone received it, as the one in the game is double sided, the factory just didn't put the cover on the correct side, but if you open it, you can change it.

Open it...? Why would anyone do that? Games are meant to sit on your shelf in their original plastic wrap, untouched.:whistle2:k

Well, in that case, unless this is displayed cover side out(which doesn't happen often), you won't be able to see the cover art on a shelf, only the spine, so it shouldn't really matter either way. LOL

Nearly a month later and still...nothing. Didn't Play-Asia sell their copies about 3 months ago? What the hell is the hold up?

Apparently he stated on Twitter that he is sending these out little by little and it’s taking so long since he’s doing it himself. That’s great and everything but it doesn’t excuse his horrible communication with the emails all but stopping and no comments from him on the funding page.

I am steering clear of any of his future projects.

Funny thing is I didn't want them signed mainly because I am not a fan of him anymore after we got into an argument on Twitter over this campaign. I have not received anything from him yet so I'm going to assume I get these signed even though I didn't want them signed or he is going to send out the non-signed copies last.

This campaign and three others I have backed have really soured me on funding projects anymore on Kickstarter or any other platform.

One game I funded was released for Apple Arcade on day one and we are still waiting for the Switch version to come out. They have stated the game is finished and in the hands of their publisher.

One campaign I backed pushed a vita version of the game to get funded and then said they couldn't release the game on vita. Another one I funded did the same thing and I have a very strong feeling it is not going to release on vita.

Does anyone know the best buy price history tracker website?  I think I saw it here once but can't find it anymore

Blu-Ray.com has a deal price tracker with history in their DEALS section, but it only seems to work on current on sale/low price items and I'm not sure how to use it to search for something else. Basically click on the little graph under the price and next to the word "Details."

I've noticed that Ark: Survival Evolved (Switch version) has become really hard to find.  I did snag the last one from the local Walmart (at $29.83) but only one other Walmart within Brickseek range of me is reporting a copy for sale.

Probably THE WORST Switch port in existence right now. The game was literally broken and unplayable the last time I picked it up. Not sure if any patches were released, but I've lost all interest and hope.

If this isn't the definition of limited obscure releases I don't know what is.

It's digital only outside of Japan, the Asia eShop only carries the Chinese version of the game, and it states that it requires a US eShop download to obtain DLC (despite there not being any on the digital listing)

Having gotten a chance to compare Switch and PS4 versions, the PS4 version loads faster with the Switch version actually popping up a loading screen when entering doors.

I'm thrilled that the Dusk DX games got a physical release, but I would have really preferred PS4. I think doing a limited print run for both systems would have printed money anyway, so I wish they would have gone that route.

The thing that's always bugged me about Atelier and put me off from the series are the constant "enhanced" ports. For Dusk we had the PS3 originals, then an enhanced Vita version, then and enhanced enhanced Switch/PS4 version. I prefer to wait until "complete" versions of games are out (within reason; I know everything's a candidate for a remake these days), and I'm not confident they'll ever stop porting and "enhancing" these games. I fully expect a PS5 port in a few years. I've actually stopped myself from picking some of the Atelier games up for that very reason.

Yeah, that type of stuff drives me nuts, too. It was easier to stomach when it was just Vita 'Plus' versions as they ran like garbage, so the console version was an easy choice. These new ones are actually upgrades, though!

A Switch version of Redout has shown up for preorder on the Nicalis online store.  Not sure if it is a Nicalis store exclusive though.

I mentioned in another thread I've seen this pop up at a few Targets recently for $29.99.

DPCI is 207-30-0075.

I don't have my Ultracore copies yet. They had some shipping issues and delays with the title. I believe they have all shipped / are in the process if shipping now.
