The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

Physicality Games has completely changed their business model. You can now preorder any of their games with a $5 deposit instead of paying in full. They're definitely worth taking a look at now. I put my order in for Rolling Gunner.
I was interested in Rolling Gunner so I will help this game get a physical release with a $5 deposit.

I'm interested in seeing how this works for them. I feel better about trying them with a $5 deposit then with their original business model of basically crowd funding at full price.

They also limited all their LEs to 3500 units. Before they were unlimited and were going to be reprinted to demand. Their standard editions remain unlimited with a chance to be reprinted.

It is still essentially crowd funding at full price though. The $5 pre order is to hold your spot until they reach their quantity goal. At that point, they send out invoices to everyone to pay in full before they move onto production. You still pay in full before they move onto production, they just don't have your money for as long before they produce the game.

Still a much better model, my concern though is, say you have 3000 people throw down $5 on a pre-order. What happens if only 2000 people pay the invoices? Do they immediately refund everyone and try to get another 1000 people to agree to order? Do they just produce the smaller quantity? Or do they produce the order in full and hope to sell the remainder later? I guess time will tell.

Yep, I was just thinking the same thing as I am on a number of physical game forums and Facebook groups and members are encouraging people who aren't even interested to throw down the $5. I think they are going to have a disaster on their hands, especially if they barely hit the minimum by their June 30th date.

Valid point. Still waiting on a game from August of last year......and a string of other titles that are up in the air. I love SLG collectors editions but the wait time on product has kinda killed my motivation to acknowledge their more recent releases.

I got bite the bullet collectors switch. I decided to gamble because the concept looks dope and what I've seen of the game looks really fun.

I'm thinking this may be one people regret sleeping on. Tough to say.

Bite the Bullet looks cool, but I will likely pick it up later when I can combine shipping with a future title or two. SLG's offerings in recent months are not selling out very fast, if at all. They started losing some momentum when their shipping delays became so long.

Lots of available limited titles these days to choose from a handful of companies..
When I started collecting for ps vita way back it was a lot to keep up with. Now I don't just buy everything that comes out. Like tricky towers I'll pass on.. but definitely grabbing Mother Russia Bleeds.

That's cool. This game is excellent btw. Top notch Indie that's kinda a Zelda-like but with a Chrono Trigger presentation. I'm sad to say that I got halfway through the game and then quit. But the dungeons honestly start getting really hard with #2! I've never quite seen anything like it. They are very sophisticated and filled with numerous puzzles, but they're not unfair.

CrossCode is an excellent JRPG whose story has an MMORPG veneer. It acts as an Isekai: "stuck in another (VR) world". You go around the overworld collecting items from monsters as currencies to buy your weapons, armors, and items. There are quests in towns. It's a vast overworld to explore every nook and cranny. The (four?) large dungeons are sparse but insanely deep. There's also a giant ability tree unlock system that looks like a circuit board. I can't recommend this game enough. It's one of the few releases I've been waiting to come to physical and it's a fantastic, must-own game for any JRPG styled enthusiast or game collector.

Wow. You just made me stop considering Play-Asia and start hoping for a worthwhile CE from Strictly Limited instead.

So anyone try black future 88? Is it insanely difficult?
Yes I've played a couple of rounds. I don't think it is extremely difficult or unfair but a game session is short as you only have about 20 minutes to beat the game. There are tons of unlocks and characters to unlock as well. I like the style and the soundtrack is great. Still trying to get a feel for combat and what weapons are best for certain situations. I enjoyed my brief time with it so far on Switch.

I don't buy very much special-order physical at all anymore. But I will probably buy CrossCode on every game system. There is so much content that this could have been a nearly full-priced game. The only downside is that some people won't like the item grinding; but that's perfectly skippable. I'd say it's the highlight of the game. All of the merchants are like the bazaar: you need certain amounts of x,y,z animal items (some of them rare) in order to buy each weapon and armor slot upgrade.

The fact that this immediately made me think of the Egyptian bazaar segment in Secret of Evermore just ramped up my excitement further.

Awesome thanks. I think I'll give it a try this weekend!

think today would be the last day because the way best buy works sales its Monday to Sunday now
Hmm, yeah looks like the sale is over.
What's weird is that I had Bayonetta/Vanquish PS4 in my cart late Saturday night but it jumped from $29.99 to $39.99 just after midnight - maybe some sales are still Sunday-Saturday?

Debated forever and while checking out.. right before I pushed confirm order.. the power goes out from thunderstorms. So I don't know if paying for a physical switch copy of Graceful Explosion Machine is a good thing or am I cursed?
