The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

Damn, VITA really did mean life uh? New games and physical in late 2020..........I never expected a pandemic this year, but I damn sure NEVER expected new Vita releases this long either, so this year is full of surprises. LOL

Not only that, but physical only. Nicole has just a PS4 version on PSN right now, and it doesn't sound like the Vita version will end up there, so Play-Asia will be the only way to get it.

With LRG's final release being free and the competition for having the last NA physical vita game... I won't be shocked to see vita games in 2021.  Given how fast LRG is.. maybe 2022.  I'm not surprised to see more games for the system in Asia since that's where all the remaining carts were held for.   But it's completely odd to see games possibly physical only for vita.  Never thought that would happen again after the early games like Asphalt Injection were physical only.

I was basing my assumption on how the tweet you posted specifically says "this release is physical-only", plus that page also mentions the PS4 version which we know is available digitally right now.
sorry I didn't see that part of the tweet I was thinking it was a situation like Xeno Crisis for vita where they did the physical version pre-order 1st then had digital version latter

So Base.com is no longer shipping to the US anymore. It’s a big loss since it will be harder to obtain the UK and EU only PlayStation and Switch releases. I got an email this morning stating October 1st is the start date, but I tried to create a basket of items and got the notice immediately that I could not continue checking out.

Use Shop4Megastore instead.

Shop4 is pretty similar and does still ship to the United States.

Are these just "indie" or do we know or think that they'll be "limited?" Id like to buy both but not at $40 each.
So far all of iam8bit's stuff has been limited, but the batches have been big enough to stay in stock for awhile (some number of months). They put it up on both Best Buy and iam8bit.com too, so if it sells out in one place you can always grab it from the other. Not sure if they're doing anything different with these two games or if they've announced any information beyond that though, so if I'm wrong about something hopefully someone will correct me.

Just so people are aware, this is apparently getting a standard retail release here at some point based on the email Strictly Limited Games sent out:

This time we welcome one of the best visual novels ever published by Sekai Games, now as a physical Nintendo Switch release under the ININ Games banner - boasting better sound & graphics than ever before! While the game will also be given a standard retail release in the west, you'll only be able to find these exclusive special editions at the SLG Partner Store.

Anyone else know about this/thinking about getting Death Tales on Vita? A game where only 1,500 copies will be made with no digital Vita release based on the email I got.

Because of the changes to the web and mobile stores removing access to vita game for purchase.

I thought that just meant you couldn't access PSV games on the desktop PS Store- not that new PSV games couldn't be added. The email I got flat out said you can't buy the game digitally.

Death Tales PS Vita Limited Edition Pre Order Now.
You can now pre order the Death Tales which is limited to only 1500 copies, get it now before it runs out of stock.

The game will not be available digitally for PS Vita, only this limited physical edition.
I should add the email was from Arcade Distillery and showed a LE.

Arcade Distillery also said that MECHO WARS: DESERT ASHES and WAR THEATRE was going to get a North America physical release for Vita if we backed there indiegogo and we all know how that ended up

While we're on the topic, I wonder how Skullpirates is going.

Edit: Went and looked. There are updates (don't know how substantial since I'm not a backer) but nothing about a release date. Two years over the estimates, though.

I am a backer the updates are just artwork from the game the last update was just a music track from the game

I see... did not realize Arcade Distillery had a bad rep. My only experience with them is with Plague Road KS, which... while the game sucked, it seemed like they kept people updated and stuff.

It's not like any Arcade Distillery games will missed. Terrible low quality shit. Halloween Forever is the only one that looks interesting from Playasia today. Though $42 shipped is steep.

While new vita games can still be bought from the console store the only way they believe they can make some money on this particular game on Vita is just to release the Play-Asia physical release. This way they also skip applying for a ESRB rating for Vita which is need for the North American digital release.

They do have plans to release the game on Switch later this year and it is also out on Steam.
