Insane Game Collection ...My God

A bit excessive, I think.

Yea, I know, I have 1000 games, I'm a hypocrite, but one day I'll purge - plus almost all of my games are in the walk-in closet... I'm not sure I'd make a huge game room like this.

Any stats on this guy? Age? Nevermind... he's 30 +, can't find anything other then that.

I'm not really impressed with big video game collections, since it all it takes is some money to build a huge collection. He has over 5000 games... I wonder if he'll ever play half of those in his lifetime?

I think I have around 2000. I know I have more in some areas, such as system count and strategy guides though. He's missing turbografx/pc engine stuff completely. Shocking in a collective that size, especially when the guy has a neo geo. That's probably the only major hole I see though. Though if I only bought games for normal prices then I'd have a lot less. Besides my n64 collection, most of my stuff is rental (many don't look like it though), or stuff I bought marked down/on sale.

If you read further down it say he "focus and passion is NES/Famicom" then neo geo or turbografx. Many of the games he got were from sales then he ebay the leftovers or doubles.I know many cheapassgamer can easily achieve this goal, but I doubt any cheapassgamer will let his ego go too far and collect this many games.

I guess the system I think is a neo geo isn't one. But turbo is my favorite system, so I immediately look for that.

i know we're all gamers, and we're supposed to be impressed...but that room's just plain weird...I think the framed and featured poster of the Wizard pushes it over the edge.

I think the nes with mario on the wall is unique. But his collection looks to be in decent condition.Nice assortment though.Only catch i have is to have a nice collection with a piece of shit tv??My collection is nice, about 500 plus games. But, I have a 65" big screen w/ 1000 watt surround sound.I have never understood people with a nice collection of games, and a little or really old tv??

Honestly, people who play older games don't depend on graphics for enjoyment. Quality new tv's are nice, but not central to such gamers.

Damn, that's insane, why buy so many things just to look at? I'm sure the guy's got a job, so he can't possibly have the time to play that often, so what's the point? I've just lost the will to collect anything at all anymore, I have about 70 or so games total and I'm trying my best to get rid of the old ones (but of course they're completely worthless), I just don't see the point.
With someone like that, money can't even be an issue. For that I envy the man.
Oh, but it is, so envy no more.

Q: This guy must be rich, spends way to much on games obviously!

A: I only wish I were rich. I spend about $100 a month or less on games. I collect games, my wife collects books. I think everyone collects something. It’s just my collection is 20+ yrs worth which is why it’s so large. I also 90% of the time buy pre-owned games which allows me to buy more for my money.
What 64 games had blue, red and green catridges? I think DK 64 was the yellow one, but I'm at a loss on the others.
The World Is Not Enough ( or TWINE) had a blue version. That's my two cents.

I wonder how big the room is, considering he has to put all those shelves somewhere.

Also, wouldn't it be a hassle just to get the games to play (assuming he plays them at all).
What 64 games had blue, red and green catridges? I think DK 64 was the yellow one, but I'm at a loss on the others.
Rayman 2 was green. All Star Baseball 2001 was red. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was blue. IIRC, Army Men: Sarge's Heroes was green also. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 was yellow. Spiderman was red.

That is a great collection. I commend him for taking the time to collect all those games. Reminds me of the reason that I stopped myself from trying to collect too many games because I rather be able to play them than have them sitting around just to look at them.
With everything stacked vertically, it's not a very good setup for playing the games.
I was thinking the same thing, even if he wanted to play something getting it out must be a bitch

So many games....

But questions:

1) Am I just stupid, or is there no Atari 2600 hooked up to that tv?

2) A repeat- Why the junky tv? I read his blurb about skipping plasma/big screen, but you'd think he could at least get a flat tube. They're nice if you don't need/can't afford the bigger stuff. *hugs her tv*
someone posted this before. i saw this long time ago.
good for you
I think the framed and featured poster of the Wizard pushes it over the edge.
And here I thought the Wizard poster was probably the best part. Most of the games that I can see clearly suck, as does his TV(s), and the Mario-level painted wall is really the most "over the top" part.

You should read his FAQ, since the presumptions people are making about his room are addressed in this FAQ. His FAQ is a bit hard to find (it's part of the alternate text on the image that doesn't load. Took a while to extract it all:

I am adding this long FAQ to my gameroom pics section as I am tired of people trying to presume they know me, my family, how I got the games, etc. I don’t think I should have to justify myself to people who visit my site but because I keep receiving numerous requests to come post on forums and answer questions I thought this would be a much easier way instead.

First off I want to thank all the people whom have written friendly emails complimenting my site.

I’ve been receiving over 100 emails a month some complimenting, some insulting.

Now, I will try to cover everything I have seen from various emails and on random messageboards to the best of my ability.

Q: He Probably used to own a game store or pawn shop and that’s why he has so many games.

A: Nope, we don’t own a pawn shop although I’ve bought many of games from pawn shops over the years. All my games were “bought” by me (minus the 50-100) my parents bought for me when I was a kid in the 80’s.

I have gotten many, many games for free or actually got paid to add to my collection and this is how. EB, Gamestop, Movie Gallery, Blockbuster, etc. Stores like this will run Buy1Get1 or Buy2Get2 sales a lot, at least in my areas they do.

An example of how I get a lot of games (newer ones only). In January, I went into a local Movie Gallery which was having a B2G2 sale. They had several copies of used Paper Mario & Pikmin 2’s at the time. I bought 2 of each at $40ea. Which then gave me 2 of each free. So, I spent a total of $160 for 8 games (4 pm/4 pikmin2) then listed 6 of the games on eBay for BIN @ $40 and sold them within 10days for a total of $240. Outcome = I got paid $80 + 2 great games. For nothing more than a little time.

This is just an example of something I’ve done many, many times. I also bought out the inventory of a closing Superstar video’s PS1/Dreamcast library which yielded me 500+ titles for $1.00ea. Then sold all the doubles and made most of my money back on that purchase. Deals are out there and unless you buy brand new all the time then you can amass a large library quick. Of course, all my older games are earned the hard way, buying at fleas, yard sales, pawn shops, game stores, etc

Q: How old is this guy? Bet he still lives in his parents house. He must never have a girlfriend or get laid!

(Ah, My favorite emails.. Thanks to all the jerks who send me these emails and post this kinda crap on forums.)

A: I’m 31, Been happily married for 11yrs, and we have a 3yr old son so yes, your all right, I’ll never have a girlfriend. My wife plays video games also and was actually glad to see all my stuff condensed into one room instead of scattered in our living room, office, and various closets, etc. We bought our house in 1995 and I haven’t lived with my parents since 1991 when I was 17.

Q: What’s up with that shitty TV, this guy needs a Plasma.

A: My TV is a 32” and plenty big for the distance you’re sitting in front of it from the NES bench. I didn’t see the need in blowing another $400 for a 36” and Plasmas and Bigscreens are to prone to burnt images when playing older games on them. If all I played was XBOX/PS2/GameCube, then yeah, I would sooner have a plasma.

Q: With all those games this guy surely has no life!

(Another one of my favorite comments from the “immature” crowd.)

A: Thanks for trying to act like you people know me and saying I have no life, “clearly” you don’t know wtf you are talking about. I play video games on average of 10-15 hrs a week. Just because I “own” 5,000+ games doesn’t mean I play games all the time. Many of my games I’ve never even gotten to play yet. Jay Leno owns 107 cars, Does that mean he must spend all his time driving them?

Once every 3-4 months my brother, 2 brothers in-law, and few friends come over and we just rip-up on multiplayer games from Saturday morning until Sunday afternoon. We have done this for years. When we are crashed the wives/girlfriends jump in and play games too or use the projector to watch movies.

When I was younger (10-15yrs) I played the hell outta video games but gaming comes to a trickle once your out on your own, married, have kids, and a social life. Something you don’t have when your freaking 12. I just never grew out of “collecting” games and still enjoy playing them when time to play them is available.

Time for you insulters to get a life yourself!

Q: I think painting that room and wasting that space is going a little overboard.

A: The themed room was my wife’s idea and perhaps it is a bit overboard but it’s very unique and my son loves it. I have no regrets on how I finished that room. We have a 2-story, 5 bedroom, 2 bathroom house and one child. It’s hardly a waste of space. This was an old storage room that was mostly filled with my gaming and sports stuff I had collected over the years.

Q: I bet this guy works at a game store or for a gaming magazine

A: Nope, I am a contractor with my own business in residential and do work for a large corporation on a lot of their commercial work as well. Wife works at a college.

Q: Nice room but his collection sucks because it’s missing Neo-Geo or Turbo-Duo or PSP, etc.

A: My focus and passion is NES/Famicom. While I collect and play everything else, I'm really in no hurry to obtain "every" single system made. I would love to snag a NeoGeo and TurboDuo someday but if I don't then I really don't care. I have enough to keep me busy till my dying days as it is.

Q: To many loose carts and some of his games have damaged labels and stuff so his collection sucks.

A: Most of my carts that have marker/stickers/damaged labels on them are either from other countries (which is nearly impossible to be picky about condition) or games I picked up somewhere and if/when I find a better condition title then it will be swapped. I'm not going to turn down a SNES Earthbound or any other game I need in my collection simply because it has a "Blockbuster sticker" or "John Doe written on it"

I've never been a perfectionist or complete freak when it comes to games. I simply want games "that" play and "to" play and the completion or condition of carts isn't my primary concern. I also cannot stand "Sealed" games. They bug me because they beckon to be played, not to be kept sealed forever. For this reason I don't collect "sealed" video games.

People saying my collection sucks on any forums doesn't bother me. Ones that say my collection needs this or that or sucks w/o something doesn't piss me off either. Opinions are varied and I really don't pay them much attention because, well, this is MY collection and my website was made in spare time with little effort and its not intended to be pushed upon or used to brag about what I have. It was mearly a personal salute to NES and wanting to share my enthusiasm with other gamers and also use it as a database for myself, a checklist, if you will.

Here’s a little info on the room itself…

The display cases (PS2/XBOX) lighted ones I got from a Sears store we remodeled in North Carolina. The Consoles shelving unit I built from a broken display case of the same kind. I cut the side piece in half, put 12" white shelves in it and a 24" x 5' top on it which holds my 32" TV nicely. After long debate on buying either a big screen or tube TV. I finally decided on the tube because of the way the room layout ended up. All the other shelving is just 2x6's painted then put together in place.

The SMB mural and NES Bench were the bulk of the work. I have over 20 hours in painting then clear coating the bench and smb background (steps, warp tunnel, flag & nintendo lettering mostly). Prolly 6 hours in building it all. The back side and sides are shelving. I put much thought into the layout of the room before even starting. Originally it was going to just be basic. I was going to just have shelving around the perimeter of the whole room, a projector, and a futon or huge couch because I just wanted a place to play and store my Shit.

Then my wife said "Are you going to paint it NES theme colors?" This triggered ideas and the eventual layout it now has. With the Horseshoe shelving setup it allowed me to build a play bench (which seats 4+ drinks and bags of chips /lol) in nice distance from all the consoles I was going to be hooking up meaning "no controller extention cables" /Yay!

After I saw what the dimensions on the bench was going to be and all the wall space I would have behind it on the back of the shelving unit. I had a brain fart and the NES bench and SMB backdrop was born. I printed a screenshot off smb, broke out the scale rule and began drawing away, did the same thing with a NES console, scanned & printed Mario & Baddies from old NES

manuals and sticker cards. Colored, laminated, and used spray adhesive to affix them once the painting was finished and several days later it was finally done.

The bench also serves as a nice storage. The lid lifts up (only in the area that looks like the NES lid) and reveals 7'6" x 2' x 30" storage space which helps a great deal.

Overall the room turned out well I think. Thanks for those of you who handed out compliments instead of insults.

QFT, it looks real strange, plus with the display cases and such it looks like the guy built his room inside an EB Games. Though I do have to admit the NES looking bench thing is kind of cool.

even so, there's a bunch of posts on here that pertain to questions answered on his FAQ. That he's rich, about his TV, etc.

The FAQ was really cool. Thanks for posting that.

I don't know how I aspire for a collection like that or not. When I had a job (or at least a better-paying one with more hours), I used to buy games like crazy. My money started leaving my pockets, but it didn't really bring me any added enjoyment. It's weird. I collect just to collect, I don't really play games as much as I used to (but there are still my days where I'll binge on something like Morrowind, Madden, or MVP Baseball...etc).

Still, though, collecting -- like the FAQ said -- is something most people do. I especially like getting old games, because they provide me with nostalgia... and also, it's like there's a void in my life from not being able to get stuff when I was a kid; having money and an income allows me to fill that in a little bit. Maybe I don't think that? I might just be psychoanalzying (I don't know if that's the right term) this or something.

You know, I envy this guy for more than just his collection... he dedicated an entire room of his house to his collection. Even if he plays it down in the FAQ, that is a big deal. Can you imagine what it's like when he has guests over who think he's crazy? I think he has balls, I respect him for doing it. Personally, at age 19, I'm too superficial to do something like that... hopefully down the road, that changes. I'm definitely making progress. Instead of being self-conscious about it, he posted his room on the internet for those interested to see. As you can tell, he doesn't care about what people say... and, naturally, since we live in America, people immediately make false accusations and say crap like "lives with his parents" and "has no life."

I think most people posting in this topic are acting rather hypocritical. We're on Cheap Ass Gamer. While outrageous deals sometimes come our way, I often-times see people doing cartwheels over saving a few bucks through this site. Why? Because those little savings up add over time and it makes it worthwhile... just like his collection. He's built it a little bit at a time, and it's slowly-but-surely it's grown into this impressive room that he provided screenshots of...

That guys rocks. He's admirable for more than just having a lot of games.

I'm glad he's happy, but I could never need that many games. If I had every game I could -want- and dream of on PS1, PS2, Saturn, Genesis, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS, Turbo/PC Engine, and Sega CD, I still don't think I'd have more than around 300 games.

Also, that website was once a article in Nintendo Power.
