CAGiversary!

This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it was getting very close to the 5,000 thread mark, I figured it was time for a reset.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

Apple Game Center
Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games are starting to support this. Currently this only runs on iPod & iPhone, but an update will be coming soon that enables this for iPad users.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center exchange thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs. You can also exchange OpenFeint & Plus+ names there.

Important Notes:

 1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
 2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
 3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
 4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
 5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
 6. Apps can be re-downloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
 7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
 8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
 9. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.
 10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.
I wonder how this one plays, I heard there was huge problems with the first one on the iPod.
"Huge problems"? The only problem I had with PQ1 was that everything was a bit tiny, but it wasn't a deal breaker by any means. I may pick up the sequel, but I haven't finished the first one yet.

Yeah there are no huge problems with PQ1 on the iPad. I'm horribly addicted to it still, and played it to death on the DS when it first came out, and love the iPad version.

Bah and I just got PQ2 for $11 on DS over the weekend. Would have preferred it on iPod. Thanks for the heads up will keep an eye on the price and knowing me and puzzle quest ill eventually get it on here too.
I figure I might as well throw this out there but do you guys know of any apps to check textbook buy/sell prices on Amazon/eBay/Half?

Also, are there are good free productivity apps (like spreadsheets, documents, etc.).
Check out the bigwords.com app for your textbook needs.

Geared is the main FAAD title right now (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/geared/id325793558?mt=8).
"Geared is a radically new and innovative puzzle game; a unique addition to its genre.
The first and only Gear-based game with absolutely no snap-grid. Geared delivers complete and total freedom to the player, bestowing every puzzle with a near infinite array of choices.
Pit your intellect against 150 uniquely designed levels, original to this game. (+PLUS 50 new levels via In-App Purchase!)"

UltraDeep is one of the current bonus FAAD games (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ultradeep/id379397835?mt=8).
"Designed to be easy to play yet super addictive - UltraDeep! may become your next iphone addiction!
It's not just simply going down like other simple games of this type. In UltraDeep you pickup diamonds which will charge your superpower. When the superpower gauge is full you can tap the screen to activate the superpower and smash down through obstacles!
You can also "level up" your superpower to make it go even faster."

Turn your iPhone or iPad into the world's most expensive walkie-talkie with Free App Calendar's featured utility, Communicator for iPhone (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id382693412?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo=4).
"Have fun with your friends using your IPAD like a Walkie Talkie. Use it in your office to talk with your colleagues or in your home like a intercom system.
With HD Communicator can connect with other IPhone and talk through BlueTooth and create your own private communication network."
Hmm, I can't access PQ2. Clicking that link tells me its not currently available in the US store. Kinda weird.
It got pulled. I hadnt heard anything about it's release date before hand, I think it may have been accidentally released.

It's funny, but now that PQ2 has been pulled, I find myself really wanting to buy it. Perhaps they temporarily pulled it on purpose. A marketing gimmick. :) I'm sure it will be back soon enough.

Get in shape for Samurai II: Vengeance by taking on wave after wave of opponents in the newly-released Samurai II: Dojo freebie (http://itunes.apple.com/app/samurai-ii-dojo/id404762656?mt=8).
"☞ ☞ FULL GAME FOR FREE !!! ☜ ☜
★ Free survival mode pits the samurai against waves of enemies, giving players a score-attack mode to hone their skills.
★ Universal app - supports iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3G, and iPad. The game is optimized to take advantage of each device's strengths.
★ Intuitive virtual joystick ensures you’re slicing up baddies, not swiping the screen."

The iPod version has pretty blurry graphics and I think its supposed to support retina display, I think that may be why it got pulled. I've been playing the iPad version and it looks good, there's some slowdown after turning in quests, but other than that it plays well. I didn't play the ds version because I was waiting for this one, so I dont know how it compares.

Buddha Machine is currently free for a few days. Interesting little noisemaker that's had quite a buzz in the digital music creation world, surprised to see it free.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/buddha-machine/id294730223?mt=8

BTW everything about this new mobile version rules the old version, except links aren't automatically clickable. Who do I need to ask to fix that? Don't really want to bug CheapyD.

Thanks very much for the heads up on this. I'm not really into electronica all that much but I've been digging loops lately. Picked up GrooveMaker recently (http://itunes.apple.com/app/groovemaker-free/id323694275?mt=8) and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I'm also still really enamored with Melodica, too (http://itunes.apple.com/app/melodica/id313573137?mt=8). Beats is phun.
I posted an App question here http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=280155 and would really like some feedback.
So I've got a 2.5 year old and 5 year old at home. The younger uses my iPod Touch almost exclusively since his sister has swim lessons at the YMCA twice a week and I have to take both of them. So he sits on my lap and plays games or watches videos while his sister works on her backstroke.

Games my kids love:

BirdStrike
Fruit Ninja
Build-A-Word ("Word World" app from the PBS show)
Watermelon!
Memory Planet
Doodle Dino
Mew Mew Tower

And the current favorite: Cake Doodle

The only two I paid full price for were Build-A-Word and Cake Doodle. They were both worth it. Everything else I got for 99 cents or free thanks to this forum and the tireless work of those who post here.

BTW, if you have an iPad, Disney has these electronic activity books that are simply awesome. There're a couple free ones and the rest are around $5 each. Start with the free Toy Story one, and you won't be sorry.

As to accessories. I bought an OtterBox case for the Touch and even though the outer rubber part is beginning to tear at the edges, the device has survived several falls without so much as a scratch or a flutter.

You should get the Moogfest app. It has a demo version of the amazingly good-sounding Filtatron app. The full version supports line-in too so you could run your guitar through it.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/moogfest/id392990311?mt=8

The Scene It! games are 99c through midnight tonight.

@dallow - I was like that for a while on my iPad (iPhone AB on it) I ended up downloading the "HD" versions and havent gone back. I'd say it's worth it but the price can be hard to swallow for some.
Speaking of 100 Rogues, it's on sale for $2.

It's a roguelike that got some good reviews, a big update just came out, and I hear there's going to be a new playable character soon. Actually some good friends of mine made this game; I don't have an iPhone myself but I have played it a few times and I thought it was awesome, and I know that they plan to support it for a long time.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/100-rogues/id354011870?mt=8
This is on sale again. :)

Raise your blood pressure with Airport Madness Challenge, newly featured on FAAD (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/airport-madness-challenge/id393575110?mt=8).

"Have you got what it takes to manage a busy airport? Play the role of an air traffic controller at six challenging airports. As days turn into nights turn into days, and as skies cloud over, this is your opportunity to see if you have nerves of steel and a clear head!

If you have tried Airport Madness Mobile, you must try Airport Madness Challenge. In each exciting level, traffic and complexity gradually builds until all but the finest controllers wash out. Sink or swim!"

They said over 20 games on this sale so I'm guessing about 5-6 games each weekend.
Man, so much for Gameloft's games being up for 24 hours, huh?
I'm upset it was for android, I really want that game.
Does anyone know if the first Dungeon Hunter has any co-op multiplayer (WiFi, Bluetooth, or online)?
Nope. Solo play only. You choose one of three classes of character and have it. Good game, though.

That sucks, I'm still going to get it sometime but would have been nice to have multiplayer. Thanks Dims.

Maybe they'll put up Dungeon Hunter for iOS another day.

Geared is pretty fun. If you like puzzle games you should pick that up while it's free. If it's still free. I'm not sure if it is any more.

It is, but it's one of those "delete after 5 minutes" games for me, it just seems so repetitive with so little creativity. It boils down to "put the smaller gear where there's room and touches the moving gear and use the bigger gear to spin the blue or vice versa". I got up to level 60 and couldn't take it anymore. IMHO there are MUCH better puzzle games out there that have been free or will probably be free again soon.

Ugh, today's Advent Calendar game for Android is a double boo from me. Was looking forward to picking up something else for my wife's iphone and ipad, but decided that getting a game on my android phone wouldn't be too bad. Unfortunately, Gameloft doesn't recognize my Dell Streak, and will not allow me to download any of their games, free or otherwise. :(

toys r us has 50 dollars worth of itunes card for 40 bucks today and tomorrow, in there 2 day sale add. The picture shows different values, so I think you can mix any cards that add up to 50.

I wish there was a TRU near work. Or maybe not. It's not like I really need to buy $50 worth of apps... then again, if I bought PQ2 when it comes back, I'd be down to $40 to spend....

the ipad version of pq2 is awesome, i've played the crap out of it. It's universal, so I also tried it on the iphone, I don't like it nearly as much, it seems really blurry- i think it might not be the final release version though. I read some speculation it might be released again on the 9th.

I didn't even notice that part. All I know is they promised 24 hours and it wasn't updated when I went to bed at 11:30 and was already gone by 7:30 this morning. I'm not sure what the point is if games are only available when a lot of people are in bed. Hopefully this won't be the norm.

They said on twitter that they had problems, and that the game would be free for longer. I don't know why they couldn't make it free for everyone though.

If anyone doesn't want to go to TRU, I still have a $50 card I'm trying to ditch for $42/

Please someone take it!

Leafbound is currently free until Sunday. It's an interesting action pack jump game with cute-sy bosses and such. Try it out!

Lilt Line is free today. I had actually just put it on my wish list about 3 hours before it dropped.

The WiiWare version is being published by Gaijin Games (Bit.Trip series) though I don't think they had anything to do with the iPhone version.

Not sure how it is yet, but I tend to like interesting music/rhythm games
