CAGiversary!

This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it was getting very close to the 5,000 thread mark, I figured it was time for a reset.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

Apple Game Center
Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games are starting to support this. Currently this only runs on iPod & iPhone, but an update will be coming soon that enables this for iPad users.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center exchange thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs. You can also exchange OpenFeint & Plus+ names there.

Important Notes:

 1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
 2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
 3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
 4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
 5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
 6. Apps can be re-downloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
 7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
 8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
 9. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.
 10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

Finished story mode of Age of Zombies, the gameplay was fun and the dialogue was hilarious! I think that was the funniest iOS games I've played.

Picked up Game Dev Story and Spider-Man HD. Gameloft always gets me by putting the iPhone version on sale first... oh well, if I ever get an iPhone I will be set on games :)

Apparently I just missed a sale on Bad Company 2 for a dollar? That sucks. Getting an iphone 4 in the coming weeks and want to catch up on some of the good games now that my phone will run them. BC2 and Modern Combat are all I really know of.
I had to double dip for the HD version of Spider-Man, it's a great game.
How can you tell which version is HD?
Normally, it will say "HD" in the title and in some cases on the icon.
Oh I see it on the ipad spider man game. I guess it only makes that distinction for ipad games.
Thanks.

Is this thread the best way to keep up with what games are on sale for the iphone? No sites with email alerts or anything that convenient?

Does anyone know if it's possible to switch your region to japan in order to download a free app? The reason I want to do this is because the iTrip app sets its region for tuning based on what region you "buy" the app in (this according to Griffin's tech support). The newer "DualConnect" iTrip doesn't have a way to set the region otherwise. I tried just changing my iTunes region to Japan, but then it wants a valid japanese credit card. Any way around this?

Where it shows the CC options, the last option should be "None".

While you're there, get the lite version of Taiko Drum Master, and if you have an ipad, Jubeat!

To get around the credit card requirement you have to log out of your current account, switch your region to Japan and then try to download any free app (cannot be a free song.) When you do, set up a new account as if you live in Japan and you'll have the option of selecting "none" for a credit card.

I did this exact procedure for the UK store to get the free 12 Days Of Christmas downloads.

As a side project, I'm working on compiling a list of iOS developers and then creating a Twitter List for them. That way if anyone wants up to the minute updates of all major developers they can see them in one place.

In other news, I emailed Steve Jobs at Apple asking when Ping for Apps is coming? Following music artists is one thing, but being able to follow app developers would be cool.

Gamehouse is havng an iPad sale.

WINTER SALE! All iPad games from Gamehouse on sale - 50% off until January 9

But there's price drops for Ipod versions too. I bought Cake Mania Main Street for my iPhone for $.99 from $2.99.
RunKeeper Pro is free thru January (normally $9.99) http://itunes.apple.com/app/runkeeper-pro/id300235330?mt=8
Thanks for the post! I had actually looked at this a while back. The boys and I have been doing a lot more bike riding along with our other outdoor activities and I was curious as to just how much extra mileage we've been logging lately. Since there's no snow where I live, biking is pretty much a year 'round activity. For those unfamiliar with RunKeeper, here's part of its description:
"RunKeeper uses the GPS technology found in the iPhone to track your fitness activity, giving you comparable results to an expensive GPS watch at a fraction of the cost. Now, you can also enter your activities manually, including your treadmill runs too!"

Maybe sooner than later if this proves to be true. It would show definite support for Ping further than music at least. Let us know if you hear anything.

Game Dev Story is so good. I'm totally addicted. The first studio around, I barley could do anything. My games did horribly and I didn't have a lot of money so I just started a new game. Now i'm about year 10 I think and I'm doing very superb. I've had like 7 hall of fame games in a row, I've got the best talent working for me and I'm working now and getting a hardware engineer to make a console. My best game, We Fit, sold 4.2 million units.

I bought infinity blade all I have to say is wow! I bought it instead of going to the movies which is more expensive and I'll spend more time with infinity blade than at the movies. I say infinity blade is a must!
I barely slept last night because of Game Dev Story :(
You too...I played that damn game for hours...ignored my PS3 and all...I think I might need help...
Is jubeat like igobeat?
Oh cool, never heard of igobeat!

Jubeat is the original from Konami arcades years ago.
igobeat seems like a clone from the pics, I'll try it.

Woohoo! Thanks so much, and dallow to. That did the trick. Well, I haven't yet checked to see if the iTrip controller I just downloaded will let me set japanese stations or not as was claimed by griffin tech support, but I did successfully download the app from the Japanese iTunes store. I found a website that explained what to use for the address and such. FYI, it's here: http://www.jpopmp3s.net/95/how-to-setup-your-japanese-itunes-music-store-account/

EDIT: alas, the griffin tech support was wrong. It made no difference whatsoever. What a piece of crap the iTrip DualConnect is... at least until somebody figures out a way to switch the region so I can use 87.9 (or better, 87.7, which curiously enough, my car stereo will tune to).

You can find all of them if you just check the "Popular" listing of appshopper.com or the app. The real gems get missed because no one goes thoroughly through the freebies anymore. Like the game :shift: is currently free to celebrate the release of :shift!2:
