CAGiversary!

This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it was getting very close to the 5,000 thread mark, I figured it was time for a reset.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

Apple Game Center
Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games are starting to support this. Currently this only runs on iPod & iPhone, but an update will be coming soon that enables this for iPad users.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center exchange thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs. You can also exchange OpenFeint & Plus+ names there.

Important Notes:

  1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
  2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
  3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
  4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
  5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
  6. Apps can be re-downloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
  7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
  8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
  9. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.
  10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

[quote name='jjz203']You can find all of them if you just check the "Popular" listing of appshopper.com or the app. The real gems get missed because no one goes thoroughly through the freebies anymore. Like the game :shift: is currently free to celebrate the release of :shift!2:

Got news for you, pal, I troll through a half dozen different freebie sites along with another dozen different review sites to see what's being highlighted each day. Sometimes I post it, sometimes I don't. I look up the ratings and try to put forth ones that are mostly positive, whether they appeal to me or not. I've never used the "popular" listing on Appshopper. Do I personally install, play, and evaluate each title? No. I actually have a regular job, a family, and other interests that all vie for my attention. I really like gaming but I don't pretend to be the arbiter of what is or isn't a quality title. I just put out the information that I think might be of interest to others. The "real gems" are subjective at best. I just try to weed out the consensus dregs. I mostly enjoy this forum and I've certainly benefited from the variety of deals and comments posted. I really get tired of all the sniping, however. I usually don't respond to criticisms or complaints in general, but I guess I've just had my fill. Maybe it's time for me to become a lurker again and just keep my mouth shut. Anyway, sorry for the rather long rant. It won't happen again.

Hey Dims, don't let him get you down. He's pissed off that he took his ball and went home and no one cared that he left. If he really had the inside track on "real gems" the constructive thing to do would be to post them and contribute to the thread rather than snipe at the people that actually do contribute.

In other words, it's all sour grapes with him.

Believe me, Dims, there are way more people here that appreciate your posts. Ignore the haters and do your thing. You have a fan base and we are all happy about your contributions.

Thanks Dimsdale! I always loved Diner Dash so I will pick this up for sure. Thanks for all the updates...I've gotten a lot of free games because of you!

That's quite the opposite actually. I got a bunch of pm's asking me to return and do my thing again, but I gave up because it's not worth wasting my time scouring all the different free apps from various sites and trying the games out before I post while still holding a job and family together when some a'holes just don't care just because they want more than they can ever contribute. Now I just enjoy whatever games I do dl and only when an extraordinary deal/game comes along will I bother to post. And I'm not "sniping" as you say, I'm just trying to help those who might be new to the site/thread and wonder where they can find deal sites for free apple device games and what not for themselves. But thanks for proving my point theflicker. ;)

Sorry if I offended you Dims, but this rant sounds eerily familiar to how I felt right before I gave up my daily updates. I'm just trying to make your life easier by telling people how they can find deals themselves too so they're not just waiting for the next free ride and can contribute some as well. Trust me when I say the free time you recover from not posting here frequently is quite a breath of fresh air. In the meantime, until others start doing some legwork and contributing, it's a chore at times. Take a load off and relax and don't take things so personally. Happy new year CAGs! :)

You know I got to say, I appreciate all the people that contribute to this thread and post all the deals but only do it if you really enjoy doing it and helping to contribute to this thread and finding all those gems for us. Your effort, despite random comments, is always appreciated. When times like this happen you usually get 1 bad comment and about 10 positive ones that tell you otherwise. So do what you must, just as long as you like doing it.

Thanks dims. Got diner dash.

And correct me if I'm wrong, didn't jjz leave because we wanted to merge the iPad thread into this one? I swear I remember him bitching the most because of it.

Price drop sites are on the first page.

You didn't have to say a thing. I think his assumption that you're not properly valuing the work he puts into it or has the gratitude of all those that value his contributions is accurate. Your obvious bias against anyone else doing what you used to do is obvious. You stopped doing it, he kept doing it. It's not his fault you burned out and he's not wrong to "rant" about your condescending tone. If his reaction to your "helpful condescension" reminds you of the fact that you're burned out, then having burned out yourself, why not go elsewhere? Most everyone else accepts his contributions for what they are without expectation or bias.

I valued your contributions to these threads when you did them and helped us weed through all the crap. Now that you're not, I don't fault you for giving it up, but I do fault you for coming in and attempting to goad someone who did not burn out. Don't feel like you have to justify why one guy is still doing what you no longer want to do. Perhaps the reasons he does it are different from the ones you had. Accept that different people are different. Don't project your feelings of inadequacy onto him. You've got all that free time you described to go do other things.

TL,DR; a guy is helpful, you just thank him for being helpful. You don't say, "Yah, what he just did is nothing, you can do if you go here and here and just do this. Nothing special, easy as pie." It's rude.

Dimsdale, I appreciate your posts a lot. I appreciate anyone who helps us all by producing posts to weed out the crap so what one does, all do not have to. The day you feel like you need to stop, I'm fine with that, too. As long as you want to, I'll keep on appreciating it, even if I don't get every game or even check this thread every day. Also, I do use appshopper, but I find that you're great at panning out the diamonds. Thanks for everything you do.

i'm eyeing the otterbox defender case for my 4g touch. is it worth the extra money?

i bought the highest priced case at best buy when i got it, but it scuffed the back of my ipod. it also didn't work well with the screen protector(made by the same company). kept popping it up and putting air bubbles in it.

My girlfriend got ipod touch 4G's for each of us for Xmas (she's heading to Sweden for a semester and it's the cheapest way for us to keep in touch through SMS/video-chat) and I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who posts deals in this thread. You've helped us get a great collection of games off the bat for dirt cheap and I want you to know that your efforts are really appreciated.

Thanks, guys.

Thanks a TON! I was *this* close to buying Diner Dash back when it was like $5. I play the PC version all the time. I am one happy camper. :D

Big Fish has made some of their hidden object games 60% off today. I've been waiting a year for Nick Chase to drop and I'd decided to buy it this week, actually. Sweet deal.

My favorites:
Nick Chase ($1.99) http://appshopper.com/games/nick-chase-a-detective-story

Amazon: Hidden Expeditions ($1.99) - http://appshopper.com/games/amazon-hidden-expedition

Cooking Quest ($1.99) - http://appshopper.com/games/cooking-quest

Also featured:
Hidden in Time: Mirror Mirror ($1.99) - http://appshopper.com/games/hidden-in-time-mirror-mirror

Civil War ($1.99) - http://appshopper.com/games/civil-war-hidden-mysteries

Buckingham Palace ($1.99) - http://appshopper.com/games/buckingham-palace-hidden-mysteries

Titanic: Hidden Expedition ($1.99) - http://appshopper.com/games/titanic-hidden-expedition

I've got the defender for my iPod Touch and my 2 year old has literally thrown this thing across the YMCA lobby and it's still working fine without a scratch on it.

Now the Otterbox cases do increasse the overall size of your device, but they do a great job of protecting it too.

Wow this damn Game Dev Story is addictive. Glad I forced myself to try it (not a game type I typically try). Anyone got a perfect score of 40 on a game? I wonder if anything special happens. I just got a 38.

thanks for the info. i don't drop stuff often, and i'm more worried about my screen than anything. bulk isn't much of an issue either. i usually lug around a psp with a playgear case on it.

Train them to 5 stars in all the jobs and then switch them with the book you can buy from the item vendor.

This isn't actually app related but I would appreciate any help that anyone might be able to give. Is there anyway to redownload a tv season without buying it again if you managed to lose it? It acknowledges I bought it but doesn't seem to have any option to redownload it and just wondering if I'm out of luck. Also all my purchase warnings suddenly stopped and using the "Reset all warnings for buying and downloading" option didn't turn them back on. Thanks for any info you might be able to give me.

Broken Sword is currently free

if i may add my two cents to this whole thread drama, most of us who post here regularly have reached this point, or even regularly reach a point, where contributing to the thread becomes a thankless, sometimes insulting, endeavor. i don't know if it's because gamer culture is a bit spoiled and snarky or what, but this thread gives me more grief than any other i contribute to. the short answer could be of course: "stop coming", but there is a kind of fraternity here that's rewarding. i know i have dozens of apps on my wishlist in appshopper, and the moment i see a price drop, i immediately post it here, hoping to share the news with you guys. several of us have done this for a couple years now, day in and day out, just for the sake of helping each other out. jjz, you had about a month or two of regular updates, and you received much more gratitude than Dims ever has, and that's fine. He never said anything rude to you because really, we're all here to help each other out. it's just so hard to make that separation between comments you ignore, and comments that make your day, especially around this time when we gain so many newbies.

long story short: welcome! contribute, don't be a jerk, and this thread will be more rewarding than your daily joe.

It's good to know so many CAGs are at the ready any time a new game goes free. I was going to post about Broken Sword's freeness, but others beat me to it. Makes me feel a warm sense of community in a sometimes-tumultuous thread. Thanks to everyone looking out for their fellow gamers.

Apache Killer 2

currently free, always wanted to try it after watching classic game room review of it.

also, thnx for the heads up dtothep... but didnt like sf bubble as much as I thought I would ( glad it was free)

*edit* I'm glad I didn't spend money on apache killer, controls seems broken nd gameplay is mediocre

Looks slick, but if you haven't seen the updated version of AccuWeather, you might want to hang onto that dollar before you buy Weather+. It's the most insane update ever, becoming a completely different weather app, and by far the best I've ever seen.

I'm surprised it's been in the store for as long as it has, or that it got approved at all. Pretty blatant infringing of Capcom's IP.

On another note, with all these Big Fish hidden objects games that are on sale until tomorrow for $1.99 phone/$4.99 pad, are any of them good. Or more appropriately, which one(s) are considered the best. I'm not sure I'd like them, but the themes of some of the games are pretty intriguing

You seem to be in the minority. I skimmed the reviews and there are nothing but 1 and 2 star reviews since this "update" that seems to have completely ruined the experience. Of course it is free, but it sounds like they really took some steps back.
