Is it even worth getting a 360 now?

MattJ1991

CAGiversary!
Ok, here's the deal, I have a Wii and a PS3, and since I'm a gamer geek, I have always been interested in getting a 360 (saying that makes me feel kinda dirty :bomb:)

The problem is that I have always been a Nintendo/Sony fanboy, I had a Gamecube and PS2 last generation, but not an Xbox, so I'm not familiar with the console or Live or anything Xbox related.

OK, so what I'm asking is, is it even worth buying one now? When the Xbox 720 or whatever they call it might be out within the next couple years, I am seriously thinking about it since, not only do I have a bunch of 360 games I REALLY wanna play (Gears 1 and 2, Dead Rising, Mass Effect, and so on) but I also want to play some original Xbox games (Fable, Doom 3, KOTOR and so on)

Also, If I do buy it, what is the best model to get? I want to be able to play as many Original Xbox titles as possible.

I am hoping to get an opinion from someone who has both a 360 and a PS3

Get a arcade at $200, sell your memory card unit and pick up a used 20 gig on eBay. That should run you around $200 + tax + the difference between the memory card and HD. You'll also need a HDMI for best quality video/sound.

I should mention that the 360 backwards compatibility is not 100%, and there are a lot of gems missing from BC (for now anyways) so I would recommend buying a OG XBox if It's in your budget to. That will probably run you around another $70 or less shipped though.

thanks for the advice, but I have one more thing to ask you, is 20gb's enough? I can fill up my 40gb PS3 pretty fast..

My 20GB is about 2/3 full, but I download everything I want and haven't deleted anything for months. Still, I'd be a lot more comfortable if I had more space. I'll fill it eventually.

Get either the 60 or 120gig Elite. There a ton of movies and tv shows that will fill up your harddrive. Not to mention all of the demos that are there also.

My 360 died yesterday, and I pondered picking up a 360 in the meanwhile, but remembered next month's price drops. While I would simply give my brother the extra 360, or the one that returns from repairs, I would prefer to wait for the price drop. So, if you have not yet bought a 360, and have a little patience, I would wait for the price drop.

The 360 has been pretty decent with backwards compatibility, and even though a new console is maybe 2 years off at the earliest, it's worth it to get a 360. I easily put at minimum, 2 hours a day on mine.

This depends on a lot on you.

1) If you download demos, would you be ok with deleting them once you got your feel? Demos take up a good gig or more for some games alone.

2) Do you plan on renting movies? Yes they are a bit overpriced, but if you plan on going that way movies take up a bit of space. Don't plan on renting more then one or two movies.

3) Do you need tons of custom soundtracks? I had over 8 gigs worth of music on mine

Lastly, if you plan on taking advantage of full game installs come the fall, 120 gigs might not even be enough depending your collection size.

Well it certainly went from "meh" to "not too bad" with the last bunch of updates, but I have the following gems that are unplayable on the 360:

KUF: Heroes (The original is, but the sequel isn't)
MVP Baseball 2005 (The last, and best MVP Baseball game)
Oddworld Strangers Wrath
Otogi 1+2
Steel Battalion (Will never be backwards thanks to the controller port issue)

Those are just a few. Take a look at this list and decide if you really need a original Xbox to suit your needs: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm .

Also keep in mind some games have issues like slowdown (Baldurs Gate and Justice League Heroes) or sound skips (Fable) and minor things like FMV slowdown.

You do not need to put any music on the HDD. The 360 is a media center and will play everything that is already on your pc. The only reason you may want a larger HDD is to be able to load the complete game on to the HDD so the DVD drive does not spin (a feature in the Fall update - game disc still has to be in drive). There is also a rumor that HDDs will soon be cheaper so wait 2-3 weeks before purchasing anything.

September 7th. An Arcade for $200 then a 120gb HDD later for $150 (it's supposed to be $150 soon) is less than the Elite at $400. Although you miss the component/hdmi cable and headset.

If they ever get Capcom vs. SNK 2 bacwards compatible I would get rid of my Xbox orginal.

Don't you have to have to PC on to stream to the Xbox 360?

Eh, if you have the money I'd say yes. The PS3 and Wii will keep you busy enough though.

I only had a PS2 and GC last generation as well but I got the 360 and Wii and I'm loving the 360.

It's basically just a Windows Media Player service running in the background. Works like a charm, except it's only half as useful if you primarily use iTunes. Playlists are a pain in the ass and WMP is messed up for me where it can't do album art worth a damn and it doesn't show up anyway on both the 360 and PS3.

I just don't see the point of streaming from a PC to the 360 when you could just play that content on the PC to start with. The only advantage I see is if you have surround sound to your TV/360 and not the PC.

1.Throw your Sonys and Wii in the garbage
2. Smack yourself in the face (for not owning a 360)
3. Go rush out and buy a 360 Elite

I recently traded my Elite for another PS3, we have all three here and it was rough trying to decide which system to buy games for. to many systems not enough time and cash.

The 360 has some great looking games coming up and that made for a rough choice, now to talk the kids into getting rid of that damn Wii then I dont have to split my gaming cash anymore. The best use of the streaming media is for quick transfer of porn and music.

As your calling yourself a "Nintendo/Sony fanboy" I would say no. If you can get past that I think a 360 is well worth it. I buy every system as long as I can afford them (And sometimes when I can't, doh!) and I far prefer the 360 this generation. I play it more than my PS3 and Wii combined, and you can throw the handhelds in there too if you like, I still play the 360 more. But last gen I barely used my Xbox outside of a few games, sticking to my PS2 mostly.

Streaming music is fantastic for racing games and I loved doing it in Skate. Streaming videos is also great since you can watch all your files on a big screen.

QFT ;)

I've done that with my mp3 player, but I find it easier in the long run to just rip the songs I want to the HDD since my mp3 player is only 1GB.
QFT ;)
I didn't say that?

But its true nonetheless.....actually, I got bored of all 3 of those games before finishing them....sooo....

Sell your Wii while the market is hot and get a 360. Thats what I did and it was a great decision.

Don't worry about Xbox 720/3 coming out. That won't be for a few years, at least 2012 probably. With all the RRoD problems MS is probably taking their time (I hope).

Thanks again, it looks like the best thing to do is get an Elite, since it is in my price range

Selling my Wii isnt an option, my parents bought it, not me

Yeah, it looks like the Elite is the best bet, with NetFlix and Downloadable Games

You could get the hard drive separately if you wanted.

Yeah I know, but the Elite comes with a Ethernet cable, Headset and an HDMI cable.

Not to mention it looks sexy

I LOVE the 360. I used to be a Nintendo fanboy (f you Wii) and was waaay into the PS1 and PS2. Now, the I can honestly say that I haven't had this much fun gaming in LONG time.

Wait til the 60 gig is $300 and go for it. Pick up Mass Effect, Halo 3 and Gears of War while you're at it. You won't be sorry.

I tell you this much once you create a gamer tag and get live set up there is no better gaming experience. Once I got my xbox I sold my wii and ps2 cause I knew there was nothing else like this.

Exactly, Xbox Live just seems so much more involved

Mass Effect = YES!
Gears of War = yes
Halo 3 = nah..

I never understood why everyone thought the Halo games were so great, Halo: Combat Evolved was awesome, but 2 and 3 were pretty much the same experience :/
you should get a 360 because the 360 has more than 3 games worth playing (unlike some other consoles).
Don't be a d-bag, all the consoles have many good games

If you can pick up Halo 3 for $30-40, I'd say do it. The SP may be sorta meh, but the MP is pretty great. Every week on Tuesday nights we have a Halo 3 CAG night and I have to say it's amazingly fun. We have some great custom gamemodes and maps that we play on. I wasn't a huge fan of Halo til I got my 360 and started playing with people like HotShot.

Halo 3 gets a lot of flack on the 'net. But, I thought it was fun. Then again, I'm a solo gamer and I just played the campaign. Definitely worth $30 to 40.

Obviously you forgot about the virtual boy.
Now who's the "D-bag"

;)

It's very much worth it. The prices have/are supposed to be dropping, as of what I read in my game informer magazine.

Especially if you are wanting to play GOW 1 and 2.

HAHA, yeah
poor virtual boy

but when I said that, I meant the current 3 consoles

If you have a PS3 already, and online gaming isn't a selling point for you, and achievements dont appeal to you, then you arent missing much I guess.

I've got both, and I decided to try some of the multiplatform games on the PS3 as opposed to 360. And there really is no difference to me. I miss seeing the "achievement unlocked" thing pop up, but thats about it.

Whoops. Quick edit: I love my 360 more than my PS3 for the reasons I listed above. The PS3 doesn't have much that holds me to it.

I'd say no. You have a PS3, which means you have access to all of the multiplatform games and Sony exclusives. You have a Wii, which means you have access to all of the Wii exclusives, and there are actually a lot of great games on the Wii. And you obviously have a PC, which you can play most of the 360 exclusives on. I played CoD4 on the 360 at my friends house, and sure, there were more people, but there were also more dumbasses.

All I can say is... I had a PS3 and Wii, then a lot later, I got a 360. Since then, I've sold my Wii and the PS3 became a movie player.
