Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

This was smug Sony being what they are when they're "in the lead".

If E3 isn't the place to show new game announcements, then stay home.

With that said, I want to play spiderma- err.. well watch spiderman play itself. It looks fun for the parts you actually get to control.  :whistle2:

This may sound stupid, but for the ghosts game and the sword fighting scene....I almost felt like it was too cinematic.

I have seen quite a few samurai movies, but I didn't like some of the dodging and stuff. I was thinking maybe something more along the line of a cleaner Bushido Blade with changes to the sword grips and stances and such and the fluidity of the movement from those. It just felt....somewhat generic? I don't know. I was disappointed in the feel of it. It sounds dumb, but it just didn't feel right to me, though it looked gorgeous though.

I think that is a perfectly reasonable response. I personally liked most of what I saw in the trailer, but, I still have very realistic expectations because the truth of the matter is that this is Sucker Punch who until this point have made nothing but collect-a-thon games with incredibly fun movement. They have no history with making interesting melee combat systems.

I'm ready for this. Consoles have gotten so good that PC gaming has become completely forgettable.

Heeeeeeeeeeeeyyy some decent surprises this E3. Though everyone was expecting a Vesperia remaster, I'm happy it's going to be for PC and all. And that makes the Switch's first Tales game right? I wonder if Hearts R is going to get ported over along with Tales of Innocence - a game we never got here in the US (if I'm not mistaken there are three games that are interconnected sorta that were for the DS and got redone for Vita?).

I was there for just the Spider-Man game but Ghost of Tsushima looked pretty cool. And Death Stranding made me laugh for the weirdest of reasons.

Yakuza getting the PC treatment? Cool, I probably will finally play them this year. Now if only Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 3 get ported over - wait, you didn't see me post that Sega; don't want to give you ideas on what we fans want since you ignore those.

Finally, okay....Team Sonic Racing...jury is still out on how this game will be (although if anyone can pull this "team racing" idea off it's Sumo Digital), I don't care. CRUSH 40 IS BACK! Here to right all the wrongs of the Sonic Forces soundtrack!

Sorry if the trailer's a repost but...come on, CRUSH 40 IS BACK!

From what I've read you can switch between over the shoulder and static.
That'd be nice I guess. The trailer kind of hints at a first person mode, too. There's just too much I know they're going to change to appease the gaming audiences of today. There's no way they'll have a character selection at the start. I'm sure it'll be a chapter based game like RE5 with character perspectives changing. The game is supposed to come out in six months, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually revealed to be episodic and we're getting the Leon chapter in January, and the Claire chapter in July 2019.

Yo. They added Ridley as a playable character in Smash. I'll buy that Ridley amiibo

Smash is coming December 7th 2018

Weekly free PSN junk:

BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle

PS4

- Character Set 1 (Re-list; Limited availability)

Shining Resonance Refrain

PS4

- Demo

Best of E3 Sale

Days of Play

Decided to re-list the BlazBlue Character Set since it was added into last weeks list late. One week left to claim it as well. There's a free Unravel theme that could be decent, but it's not really thread related. Still looking for a halfway decent Panda avatar that I like for the PS4, but maybe I'll give in and go with what was added this week.

The Nintendo presentation was ok, I suppose.

All the Smash details were great, good to see that they actually added Ridley as a character.

We finally see something about the new Fire Emblem, but that Spring 2019 wait is too long for me... :(

Was expecting something about Virtual Console or some other ports, but nope.....kinda disappointing.

At this point it's pretty safe to say that Smash Ultimate is just Smash 4 with every character ever in it. No way a game coming out this year with that many characters is being built from scratch. Wonder how many new characters we'll end up seeing.

What about Pikmin 4, Metroid Prime 4 and Bayonetta 3? And where was the new smash game? All I saw was a upgraded port of the wii u game

They only show games that they consider ready to be shown.

They never actually said the upcoming Smash game was going to be a completely NEW Smash.

One thing has aroused my suspicions and is causing concern: the title Fire Emblem: Three Houses.  There had better not be three versions of this game....   I'm going to be very displeased if they start treating this series like Pokemon, and the previous Fire Emblem Fates. I really don't like that Nintendo way of monetizing their games; just skin it differently and change a few things. Let's hope that our suspicions are incorrect.

I'm assuming that this is the Switch main line Fire Emblem game that was suppose to come out in 2018, but now it got delayed to 2019.

I do like there being some sort of story mode or additional way to have to unlock all the characters instead of them being there right from the start. Unlocking is fun; it feels like rewarding progression. Hopefully the unlocks won't be from repeated battling.

So if Metroid and bayo were ready enough to be shown last year why weren't they shown this year?

I'm also cautiously optimistic about Tsushima. I can't really tell what kind of game it actually is. Hack and slash? Quick time events without button prompts? Fighting-esque with move lists?

How much are those swings cinematic and how much is player controled?

The game that surprised me the most is probably Daemon X Machina. It looks pretty good, and looks like it runs really well on the Switch.

A demo for Shining Resonance Re:frain has popped up in the Xbox Store: https://majornelson.com/2018/06/12/shining-resonance-refrain-demo-is-now-available-for-xbox-one/

For those of us who want to try it out before committing. :) I'm going to go ahead and assume it's up on PSN as well.
The demo is very short and only contains the very beginning of the game (the tower) with a bit of tutorial. There is very little combat and it's mostly VN style dialogue, so just a heads up. It seems like it lets you save at the end of the demo, thus I assume you'll be able to pick up where you left off with the main game.

Properties like Gungrave are always weird to me.   I watched all of Gungrave several years ago, and have watched enough anime over the years, but I also haven't seen MOST anime.  It's weird to me when they turn these minor shows that 99% of people haven't seen into video games.  Seeing the show would never make me want to play a video game about it either; the second half of the series was atrocious, after a solid first half pre-story.  I guess it's only VR though. so you might as well attach a little brand name recognition to it.

"Last year was the first year for Switch at E3, so we took a bit of a departure from our usual approach to E3, which is to focus on more near-term stuff. Last year, because it was the first year for the hardware, we looked at things that were maybe a little further out. This year, you can see pretty clearly, we’re back to focusing on the near-term. We’ll have more to share with Metroid Prime 4 when we have something we think is going to wow people"

When any company just shows a logo, that means the game has barely started and probably isn't past the planning stages as of yet. Only the most basic of games get a loge reveal one year, and then get actual game-play clips the next. Metroid & Bayonetta are probably still at 20% or under, and that isn't going to show well at this point.

I've played tons of pre-released games over the years at trade shows, and some may get to 25%-50%, only to be scrapped, and started over from scratch. So while it would have been nice to see something from both games in regards to game-play this E3, I wasn't counting on seeing anything until later this year at the earliest.

Gungrave is actually a show based on a video game. The second half of the TV series is an adaptation of the the part of the story you play through, which is probably why you felt it sucked.

Innocence tempest and hearts released on the ds originally and were all considered mothership titles (despite being outsourced for the first 2)

hearts was one of the last tales of game made by tales studio iirc as they closed it and absorbed some of the staff back into bamco.

They were intending to remake all 3 of them and connect them via the triverse gate dungeon which characters in each world who were new party members are from and are stealing tech and shit from each of the worlds. Gallando from hearts r and QQ from innocence are 2 of them. They cancelled tempest r though because lol vita. There just wern't enough fans of the series that owned a vita in japan. The games bombed super super bad there and had worst sales for any game in the series. Even na average sales numbers are better than what the games sold in japan. Sadly they never confirmed hearts r's sales numbers for na as it would have been nice to hear how well it did.

If bamco had any sense they would have ported the games to ps3, pc and ps4 or 3ds considering they would have sold significantly higher if they had. At the very least they could have sold 200k in japan alone.

Also new fire emblem yes.

Day 1 CE for Fire Emblem. Just hope that Three Houses doesnt mean 3 releases

Also hoping we get another 3DS Echoes game
Yeah I hope they don't do that pokemon shit ever again.

I certainly would love another echoes game considering how we are missing like almost half the games in the series.

I don't think they would do a triple release though unless they intend to repeat fates plot and have some royal under king swordwhip be the one you play as for that side.

I would have assumed it was another blazing blade/radiant dawn and will have 3 lord protagonists each with their own sections.

yeah lets hope you are right. If they do the pokemon shit again like fates at least I can just pick the 1 good entry to play and ignore the other 2 again.

I would like Blazing/Binding Blade to get the Echoes Treatment if they don't do an Echoes Treatment to one of the unlocalized Fire Emblem games.
