Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Yeah, I don't really worry that much about physical or digital but I can definitely understand why, I wish it would've came with a launch week discount or at least some extras to make it feel like a better value.
I am back and forth on it as well. I don't like paying a decent amount for just digital games, though it's in one of my fave genres (dungeon roaming RPG). I've heard it's relatively easy for the most part, but is fun with an ultra cliched, anime type storyline. It's a toss up....I'm more against it since I just got Stranger of Sword City, and most consider that to be the better game.

I'm waiting on Ray Gigant. It looks good, but I still have Strangers of Sword City and Operation Abyss to play through this summer.

I'm sure the price will drop fairly soon. I just hate digital only MSRP games.

Same here, just got Stranger of Sword City too. Most reviews I've read said it combines dungeon crawling with visual novel elements, so that's pretty awesome. I'm leaning on picking it up to have something to play in between Stranger of Sword City. Sometimes I run out of juice on DRPGs unless I have something else to go to, unfortunately this is the same type of game though. I think it was bad move on them not going retail, it looked as good or better than a lot of stuff that does. Seems like it would've done alright mainly because it's a cheap(er) Vita title and it looks pretty cool. Oh well, anyways I'll probably pick it up, I have $32.xx in my wallet, maybe it's meant to be. Lol. :)

Edit: My God Eater order has been canceled twice already, even the second time which I did over the phone so I don't know for sure about this or what's going on. Hopefully it's just me, and I can get it fixed.

Yeah, i cant play too many of these dungeon crawlers too close together. They just start to blend together and feel super tedious.

Uncharted 4, Valkyria Chronicles, One Piece, and Overwatch will provide me some nice variety this month.

Pocket Card Jockey baby! I'd recommend waiting on Aegis/Trillion two below average games IMHO. EDF2 is worth that price though my hands cramp on my original Vita.

Trillion is really good if you like SRPGs, but don't want to go balls deep into Disgaea

I felt Aegis had some decently solid gameplay and found that rather fun and of course since its a tower defense game, it'll be repetitive as shit. It has plenty of negative parts too, but I wouldn't call it below average and I did enjoy it a decent amount. That said though, I can only recommend it at $20 or less because of lack of options/variety. I went on earlier in the thread on what I disliked about it.

Trillion on the other hand, if you didn't go in knowing it was a management game then you're probably in for a bad time. The game is really lacking in actual gameplay and all the pre-release English footage kind of hid that fact unless you went and looked into the footage for the Japanese release. I didn't entirely know how little actual fighting there was prior to its release either. First game in a while that I didn't fully know what I was getting into. I know when I listed it for the weekly release list I had trouble listing its genre and ultimately went with what media called it.

I'm thinking about picking up Ray Gigant, anybody here buy it yet? It's gotten pretty decent reviews considering how niche and different it is. I think it looks fun, is supposed to be kind of easy, but that's fine with all I'm playing right now.

Also how's Return to PopoloCrois: A STORY OF SEASONS Fairytale, I saw it on the eShop for $20, seems pretty cheap?
I've put a few hours into it so far and have enjoyed the storyline, and the characters. That's one thing that hurts a lot of games for me is not having characters that have personalities. I'd rather have a few main characters than random mercenaries you drudge through 100+ hours with that have no back story.

Is this the version that has the previous God eater included or was that digital only?

Awesome, yeah I went ahead and picked it up already, waiting for it to download. Glad to hear it's not that bad and the characters aren't bland. That destroys games for me, too. I can't stand generic heroes 1-5 or whatever in games like these, completely makes it feel tedious. I know they try to usually make a story but it's just too much of the same, feels so forced, and I'm not really one to talk about cliches. I don't mind them here and there but give it a little twist I don't see a mile away. So that's pretty awesome if it has a good story and characters.

I really like the animation I've seen of it. Even if it seems a little weird sometimes, It's really good art. I also think it's cool how you have to watch your weight in the game, it's weird but I find it interesting. I mean it's different. Just like the rhythm-based parts look pretty cool, I don't know how they'll play out but it's at least something new. Definitely like when games go in a little different direction with new mechanics to break away from the status quo. I wish it didn't take 2 hours to download, though. My god it's only 1.3 GB. Lol. Anyways, thanks for the input. I'm a little bit more excited to play it and see what it's like now. :)

Edit: I kind of rambled on there...sorry.

Edit 2: @ 8:47pm it's finally done installing

I maybe was mean saying Aegis was below average...it's repetitive but plays alright. I don't change my stance on Trillion though. The Trillion fights and practice fights are boring as heck and frankly the characters and the story really never got to me. It's like Aegis, very repetitive and all, though it has some charm. It's just a generic story filled with archetypes. I actually wish the Trillion fights weren't there at all. They were frankly garbage and when you figured out the strategy it was pretty much wailing over and over in an awful battle system to whittle down the health.

It looks like I was given a second Grand Kingdom Beta/Demo PS4 key that lasts until Tuesday. Any thread regulars interested in it? It's a 5GB download. The beta/demo consists of a tutorial mission, a normal campaign mission and then all you can do is play around a little bit with the (optional) online portion of it. Supposedly save data will carry over into the main game, but you're limited (in the demo only) to 3 battles per day on the online side. Online progress will reset however.

Possible the key may not work, but it's different than my original one.

EDIT: If there's no request for it by mid-morning tomorrow, I'll post it in the thread's PS4 community. Nitro looks like he grabbed one before I gave him mine, so it's still up for grabs.

EDIT 2: Code gone.

I'll take it if it's available.

I too was sent a Grand Kingdom Beta code from the Nisa Online Store. I'm a Vita islander, so here's hoping one of you can use this:

Oh yeah I also can't use my key since I'm a vita only. inb4 there's a game breaking bug in the vita version.

You have been invited to join the
Grand Kingdom Beta for the PlayStation 4!

1st to quote this post, gets it in the morning

Nobody has asked for my Grand Kingdom PS4 Beta/Demo code, so it's still up for grabs and will be posted in the PS4 community in several hours from now if none claim it.

Code gone.

How do I join the PS4 community?
Post your PSN ID asking for an invite and one of the three people with invite privileges should invite you. Info is actually in the first post about this. It's pretty dead for the most part (As it's easier to talk here), but I dump things there on rare occasion.
