Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

More Shiren Vita impressions after about 2 more hours and moving on as suggested:

I recommend everyone to move onto the real village before you start doing the beginner building tasks. You get your storage and can sell junk. I do recommend slogging through the tutorials though as I learned quite a bit. I've been playing the main game now, and the addictiveness is back baby! Pretty challenging and lots of items. Also love that they still have random people walking around you can help and such. I hope they have that ninja girl again in this one...she was a good partner if I remember correctly in the SNES one. I can see rusting is a little less harsh in this, but it seems like polishing is rare. So....go with gold stuff and power it up until you get really cool stuff, like I kept saying. I hate those stupid little slimes that with each hit make your equipment more and more worse, unless it can't rust. I know right now I'm rocking a lizard sword and a gold shield....would have a gold sword but I gave it to the blacksmith lady...and I need to get it back! I really like how this version feels fully featured and is somewhat complicated sometimes, but also helps you a bit. I also like how rusting in this isn't extremely devestating, though it could be if it keeps happening. In the SNES version having your stuff get acid bathed I believe basically destroyed it I believe, so you would be running gold, and in turn diamond since they couldn't be destroyed by that cheap trap. You guys nowadays have it easy with weaker stats, though there is a chance there might be the cheap trap somewhere down the line. It's fun and you get used to it. Don't expect hand holding and know stuff can get pretty hard sometimes. Also trust me with the gold items....plus they look cool. I am not sure how long this game will be, but I can't wait to play it more.

Edit: I realized my talk of the gold and diamond weapons likely came from memories of Azure Dreams. That game was hard as nails haha. It still isn't bad to raise gold weapons/armor, since they can't rust, but they might not have the weapon levels as other weapons. Just confusing rogue type games there haha.
i usually dont do these punishing crawlers, but was somewhat enjoying this till i got bored with some of the extras in neko, was hoping their was a stopping point after neko before the towers, went ahead and tried the past, besides hard, didnt know about some wanderings enemies that will wipe u out in one hit, woke one up and it came after me and wiped my party out, had to switch to another game while i hope for a rescue

Well again I will play them eventually when they go on sale for cheap enough - it's not like I don't have enough in my backlog anyway. Everyone has their own feelings on digital games, mine are that you never truly own them - at best, you're leasing them. So I won't pay more than about $15 for a digital only game. I have done way more than my fair share of supporting physical releases of niche games, but often the publishers decide to go the digital-only route for future games in series I've been supporting. There is a certain amount of "voting with your wallet" you do as a consumer, but the majority of the reason why most of us buy things is because we want them first & foremost. And I don't want digital-only releases.
I can understand you having that feeling, but realistically we'll probably be dead before losing access to them ever becomes a real issue. And yes, most people do buy things because they want those things. It also comes down to why you buy games, to play or collect. For me it's to play which is why I was more than happy to buy Yakuza 5 and why it being digital only didn't really matter to me. In the end, the main point is not buying something because it's digital isn't sending the message you want/think it's sending.

Stop speaking logically whoknows. It's scary =_=

Well that's what I'm trying to say - I'm not attempting to send a message. :) And I both play and collect, so yes, that's a big part of it too.

Looks like Shantae & The Pirate's Curse is getting a physical version released in the US on 3DS. Wayforward retweeted the Rumor from Nintendo Life twitter.
Hmmm... I'm very happy about this, but I wonder if we'll get a physical release of Risky's Revenge, as well?

Risky's Revenge didn't come out on the 3DS... so I wonder if it's even in the cards for them to release a physical copy.

Both games did come out on the Wii U, so it would've been nice to see all 3 modern Shantae games come out on one platform. I'm a stickler for consistency. I like to keep franchises on one platform if possible.

anyone know where to preorder Valkyrie drive in the US?
Only RIceDigital for the time being, which has pretty hefty shipping costs since they're based in the UK. GalGun was also a PQube/RiceDigital game, though, and it got put on Amazon closer to its release date, so that's a distinct possibility (it's what I'm waiting for, personally).

I hate that slut Miku, but even I got moist. Damn I love me some devil/monster girls.
You best watch your words when it comes to Miku.

Yeah I'll cu- uh, come back later...

Not a whole lot going on this week for releases and I don't expect much to release in August outside of Western games or on PC. Other than that, we had a rare stealth release on the Vita last week. Also good to see Little King's Story finally hit PC. Though I do somewhat fear for that games keyboard and mouse controls and think it'll end up having it be a controller game which is disappointing since KB&M would make the feel much better and more accurate if they can get it right. Could've sworn I saw a Japanese brick breaking game on the PC last week too and now I can't find it.

Other stuff that released without warning last week that are all on PC/Steam except for one on Vita:
- A.W.: Phoenix Festa (Vita / Action RPG?)

- Corona Blossom Vol 1 Gift From the Galaxy (Visual Novel)

- Montaro (Doge Runner)

FINE! I guess I have to get GalGun through Amazon if BB refuses to carry it.
It's Pqube....we're lucky Amazon even lists it. Was the same for Steins:Gate Vita. Hoping for the Valykria Bikini game to be listed there soon too. The shipping costs are way too extreme for my tastes from the publisher store.

E for Sexual Content? Goodie, I can't wait for some soccer mom to find little Jimothy masturbating to anime girls and causing a shitstorm on social media.
And it'll be like this.

Are there any recent or upcoming Japanese games exclusive to Amazon?

There's (may as well be exclusive) Gal Gun and the Sun and Moon Steelbooks I know about. Considering renewing my Prime finally for those two, and wondering if I should pick up something else.

I did notice the Azure Striker Gunvolt Pack is on Amazon, but not Best Buy yet.

In comparison to Criminal Girls, Moe Chronicle, and the Senran Kagura series, Gal Gun is pretty tame. My biggest problem is the load times, and the game locking up, forcing a restart.

OMG, that's awesome. I doubt this game will ever be at retail anywhere, so the chances of someone getting it who isn't supposed to is highly unlikely. And if by some miracle this did make it to retail somewhere, the M rating should still be in place within the stores POS, so an 18 and over person would still be necessary.

That is rather cool, and I wonder if this will make it more collectible in the future?

That hasn't stopped Reddit & Kotaku from making it front page news so the SJW Brigade saddles up for another pointless battle.

I'm sure this is probably addressed somewhere, but is Amazon the only US retailer with Gal Gun? or is this just cuz of the delay?

Now this is something I can

to!

I'm sorry...were you thinking of something else?
I saw that too. Is this why it was delayed? I'd like to try to get a misprinted version if possible. Should I order now? IF they're already fixing this I'll just wait for price drop.

Now that is funny.  The comments in the article are pretty good as well.   Rated E for sexual content for everyone.  sexual content the whole family can enjoy xD

Just pointing out since it seems some of you didn't read the entire article (which is fine since the article is crude poorly written click-bait). The E on the back of the box is a misprint, it has a M on the front and is M on the ESRB website.

Although really, I'm 100% fine with kids that've hit puberty playing this. I obtained real porn when I hit puberty, back in the 90's. Any kid that wants porn now can get it easily, and most videogames they want to play are murder simulators. This far better for kids than either of those options.

yeah althought i had already went through rice and paid, hoping val goes up on amazon this month, not happy with rice since others are getting their game or shipped while reads in warehouse

That MeiQ: Labyrinth of Death Limited Edition actually looks pretty good, and is not horribly priced like some other LEs we've seen lately.

Might pick it up.

Not sure it was mentioned anywhere, but for those of you who pre-ordered any version of FFXV at the SE store, the carbuncle surprise site is up.

www.finalfantasyxv.com/carbunclesurprise or redirected to

https://carbunclesurprise.finalfantasyxv.com/

Just log in with your SE store account.  If you're not lucky and don't win the home theater, you should at least get a cindymobile dlc skin I believe?  That's what my friend and I got.

Also if you get some kind of invalid captcha, try firefox.  Both my friend and I were able to login using that browser.

Has anyone ordered any CE's with Rice Digital before?

Gal Gun is supposed to be released tomorrow and I ordered the CE of the game from Rice. Just curious how long their shipping usually takes. :3

Great, apparently Facebook accounts aren't working with the site. I can't log in

Does that mean your going to wear them? Hey man whatever you want, as long as I don't have to watch you model. I don't care, it doesn't affect my life.

They don't look like they're pre-soiled.

DISAPPOINT!
Aren't they also supposed to have a picture with them? Or is that the higher value vending machines I'm thinking of?

P.S. Ahhh Japan I love you, but sometimes I just wonder why.
