Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

There sure were a lot of sudden releases last week that didn't have Steam pages prior. Of those Empire of Angels does look kind of interesting and we've got another Grisaia game. Other than that, Shantae is finally releasing! Its been fully out for a week to backers and a little longer than that in beta testing with access to the full game. Hopefully nobody got spoiled. Next weeks list is going to be a little tricky due to timing...

Other stuff that released without warning last week that are all on PC/Steam:
- Its your last chance in new school (Visual Novel)
- Xmas Shooting - Scramble!! (SHMUP)
- Legend of Merchant (Simulation)
- 天使帝國四《Empire of Angels IV》 (Strategy RPG)
- NOBUNAGA'S AMBITION / 信長の野望 (Strategy)
- Aoki Ookami to Shiroki Mejika / 蒼き狼と白き牝鹿 (Strategy)
- Romance of the Three Kingdoms / 三國志 (Strategy)
- The Melody of Grisaia (Visual Novel)

January is shaping up to be a really huge month with DQ, FF, and the Switch information.

I guess the DQ information is December 29th but it's close enough.

Examu is making a new Arcana Heart game! Yay! Hopefully this one will look way better than 3, which was shoddy even when it was released 7 years ago. Even Aino Heart in Nitroplus Blasterz looked better than in her own game. I don't expect Guilty Gear graphics, but something that would complement the PS4 would be nice. The gameplay was always really fun and quickpaced, and maybe we'll get an addition to the usual 23 characters.

Other Shoryuken news that was posted a while ago but I'm too lazy to link:

SFV season 2 pass available now.

Dissidia Final Fantasy (Arcade) gets a new stage in update.

KOF14 Athena getting classic costume.

I was looking at the Sharin no Kuni Kickstarter and honestly I'm kind of tired of kickstarters (seems especially prevalent with VNs) not including the Steam key with the physical copy. I mean in the case of Sharin the physical tier is $40 and physical + Steam is $55. I can't imagine it costs them much (if at all) extra considering just about any regular PC release includes a key. Hell I even just bought Kindred Spirits on the Roof and it came with the key and I didn't have to invest money a year in advance for it.

Have you played the original? If so what are your thoughts on it?
The game is a little cheesy, but I like the character designs. Lots of different paths and the creator is still adding to the game I believe.

What's really cool is the Anime cut scenes he had commissioned from a Japanese company.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6v1aq-qsJBM

I'd recommend it, especially if you like other gender bending stuff like Ranma, or Twin Tails. :)

When I saw that I clicked on it and called my boss over to get his opinion on if I should back it or not.
I hoping that means you both backed it.

Twin Tails was amazing. I guess I'll be backing this and picking up Max. It'll give me something to play at work.

So reading into the screenshots for those curious (Contains some post-finale Cold Steel II spoilers):

The time skip to 1206 is roughly one year after the events in Cold Steel II. The main story still revolves around the Ashen Knight, the "Hero of Erebonia," but that doesn't necessarily make him the main character. Screenshots are showing Ordis, capital of the Lamarre region in western Erebonia. Some other screenshots show Neinvalli, which is in Crossbell downtown area (I think? Not that familiar with Crossbell locations), which is technically now part of Erebonia. Since we're still unclear of who the main character is going to be, I'd wager that it may likely be the pink haired tonfa girl.

[/customspoiler]

^ Above shows two new unknown characters. Pink uses Tonfas similar to Lloyd Bannings, the main character of Trails to Zero/Azure (Crossbell Arc) which isn't localized yet, but was playable in the Divertissement. The blue haired guy looks to be using dual-swords in another screenshot. It also shows Altina Orion in the battle as the third character based on portraits alone.

[/customspoiler]

^ Looks like Sara Valestein tailing Lechter. That foot bend though.

The graphics do look nice for a Falcom game though. Hopefully with it being a PS4 exclusive, they're able to fix some of the aesthetic issues they've had since Cold Steel (Bring back better choreographed fight scenes!). If we're lucky, we'll see the game by the end of 2018 in English. More than likely 2019 though.

EDIT: [customspoiler='Key art that may or may not mean anything']

EDIT 2: Gu4n, omgfloofy & Yotaka are taking over the editing for the Trails to Zero/Zero no Kiseki fan translation project it seems. I'm familiar with the first two, so it should turn out to somewhat decent.

I literally came back from the lurks just to have a moment. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Finally feels like Christmas!

Sounds like they might work closely with Xseed? So it'll "sell internationally"?

And I'll just drop this here:

[attachment=24878:reanbowlcensored.jpg]

"Thank you for supporting our games on a dying console, now please get yourselves a better gaming device"

Maybe I'm reading too deep into this.. :whistle2:
Falcom be like:

That reminds me, I should try to finish CSII...in between Final Fantasy XV and Last Guardian.

If putting it on the PS4 is the best way to guarantee that it gets released stateside, then I don't mind that choice. It would be worse if it was released on the PS3/Vita and then never be seen outside of Japan. I'm looking at you, Valkyria Chronicles 3.

But why would I want to STOP the Tentacle Menace?
Because it's clearly a menace. If it wasn't, the game would be called Alluna and Brie and the Tentacle Indifference.

At this point, I would buy Trails of Cold Steel III on whatever console they decided to release it on. I absolutely loved 1&2, and they apparently sold, and were received well by the NA/EU fans. I only hope that the sales for Cold Steel, and Trails in the Sky garner enough interest to keep releasing games here. I'm invested in the story and would freak if Ao, or Zero ever got released for NA/EU.

Free PSN junk over the last week. Holiday Sale Week 3 as well, but only a few thread related things like PSYCHO-PASS and Stranger of Sword City, plus a few more. I've also been forgetting to link December's PS+ Games these past couple of weeks. Stories is pretty interesting and Invisible Inc. is good if that's your cup of tea. So there's that monthly reminder out of the way.

I don't really expect much else this week or next. However I did go through and check out the Japanese PSN store, so I'll link a few things from the past month or so below. There are more than what I linked inside of the generic link. Finally there's also a bunch of premium avatars available on the NA PSN for thread related games like Gal*Gun, Zero Time Dilemma, Steins;Gate 0, BlazBlue and Shiren that popped up in the last month or so for those who want them ($0.50-$1.00).

An Update from Muv Luv

Muv-Luv PS Vita port has been ongoing since our previous update, and we may have some big news in a month or so from now. Please stay tuned PS Vita fans!

After the completion of Muv Luv Alternative for PC, all efforts will be focused on the Vita versions of the games
Physical rewards will be shipped as soon as possible once Muv-Luv Alternative is released on Steam. If you have pledged for PS Vita physical, your rewards will be reserved for a second batch of shipping which which will be a few months later—depending on how much time the following will take:
1. Muv-Luv Alternative porting
2. Cartridge production
3. Sony approval .
To elaborate further, let's say the PC backer's physicals ship in June. Pledges containing a copy of the physical PS Vita version will likely be sent by September.
This is still a rough (worst case) estimate, and rewards may ship early if everything goes well.. We'll keep everyone posted!

Just fyi for those that were interested in Shiren on Vita.

It's starting to drop down in price now, just like Exist-Archive has.

Currently at $19.89, so keep an eye on it.

Shoot, my copy already shipped despite me selecting the slowest possible shipping speed in case the price started dropping.

I will never back anything on Kickstarter after this. The timeframes have been total bullshit while they sit there and sell the game to people on PC but they promoted this project as a VITA experience.

Kickstarters in general just take a long time, from funding, to fulfillment.

Patience is key if you decide to go in on a KS project. :D

Also, it was always their intention to have it on PC first, and then the Vita portion later, so it's not like they're lying to you about anything.

Which is why I'm done with Kickstarter now. Lesson learned.
I only ever do Kickstarters for stuff I actually want.

I just can't deal with having like 20 things on hold that I've already paid for, and nothing arrives in a timely manner.

I don't understand how some people can actually go through that, and not flip their desk over during the wait.

EDIT 2: Gu4n, omgfloofy & Yotaka are taking over the editing for the Trails to Zero/Zero no Kiseki fan translation project it seems. I'm familiar with the first two, so it should turn out to somewhat decent.
One of the screenshots has me speculating you'll get to play Rean still:

That sure looks like the back of his coat if you ask me.

No, it couldn't be...him the back there...could it be? Hmm... (I'm not going to spoil any of that part of CSII).

Regarding unknown characters:

I wonder when the Zero/Ao characters appear. Considering it's been a year though, that's more than enough time to round up (and bind up) the S.S.S.

I kinda thought, hey wouldn't be kinda cool if in CSIII you'll get to play the story from two different sides? While mere speculation, I can't help but think I'll get that wish.

BTW, They're not going to make their own deadline of end of 2016 for Zero's fan translation are they? I read some of the s*** that hit the fan with that project. Savage.

I was wondering what was taking Falcom so long to get it launched. If they were going to fix bugs or something it would have been out sooner but I guess they figured, hey now the Pro is out so guess we might as well do something right?

Xseed is going to be very busy these next few years (ten if want to guess another Second Chapter scenario hits them - MUAHAHAHAHA, okay JK JK).

Okay and I want to say this: I L-O-V-E my Vita. All four of them. But considering running through Cold Steel II and the thoroughly meh graphics and lag...I'm glad they made the change. I'm seeing people getting salty in the comments on Dualshockers and Gemastu. So maybe I can understand that you want to take it where ever you go and such. And that's okay. But let's look at CS I and II, you do realize lots of stuff was cut from the game because they built them to fit in a Vita cart right? I think a few of the audio dramas on CD were meant to fill in gaps of the story that were meant to be playable (like you were going to visit a certain town - someone's home at one point in the game but that got turned into an audio drama).

The Trails games are meant to be marathons not sprints. Everyone agrees with that right? So for me, I'd want to enjoy that marathon with the best of everything and soak up everything I can up, music, graphics, story, NPCs, and all. Sure I can't take it with me on the go, but, I barely played it on Vita even when given the chance.

And I like the new character designs, they seem to have somewhat of a "hand-drawn" finish to their 3D models.

But hey, it's just my opinion: I do believe the upgrade to PS4 and abandonment of Vita is long overdue.
