Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

That picture is super manly in Japan.

Is it this one? I can't really check throughly since I'm on mobile.

Total is around $51 with S&H. Shipping is really quick from Amazon.jp as well.
That's the one but that's the Japanese version- I guess I don't reallly know if there's a "US" version (i.e., English text on the packaging) even though it's listed on the US SE store.

Sorry for the late VN updates recently.

MangaGamer released Magical Marriage Lunatics last week. It's by the same people who did the Imouto Paradise games. I am currently playing it and will give a short impression soon. I've gotten through 2 routes with 1 being flat out horrible and 1 being very drama filled, but fulfilling, and likely about 2 more hours longer than the other one.

Kuroinu Chapter 3, the final in the series, is their next nukige game. It's not for me, but it seems to sell at least. It releases May 31st with a discount for pre-ordering it.

Jast USA released Sweet Home. It's a good one, though I've heard routes are crashing, so wait for a patch. I believe it's a nukige.

Denpasoft released NEKO-NIN exHeart 2 last week. I haven't played the series. The initial discount is still there for now. It's on Steam too.

Last week Sekai Project published AIdol. It looks cute, and it's on my wish list.

Also Fureraba ~Friend to Lover~ finally released on Steam yesterday. I wrote up about this, and it's my favorite VN in a long while (8/10). It honestly felt like the title from friends to lovers. It progressed nicely, and I believe there was only 1 weak route. It was still an OK route. 18+ patch available.

I think that's pretty much it. I was busy last week, but hopefully i'll always keep up the eroge and some other niche publisher news up to date. Also a quick mention but Princess Maker 5 released yesterday on Steam.

Not much console wise this week as half of it is packaged re-releases. PC on the other hand gets Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, which I ended up backing. There's also the port of Steins;Gate 0 if you didn't play the PS4 or Vita version as well. But man, last week I was looking into Soul Smith after it released and the publisher just can't translate for shit. It's so bad you have no idea what you're doing. Seems I was wrong on the publisher being Chinese and instead seem to be Korean. Seems like a good game otherwise.

Other stuff that released without warning last week or I overlooked it (Assume PC unless otherwise noted):
- Fureraba ~Friend to Lover~ (Visual Novel)
- You Are The Apple Of My Eye 研磨时光 (Visual Novel)
- Wolf Tails (Visual Novel)

E: CD Japan does have a lower price if using uninsured shipping with 2-6 weeks arrival time, but this beats out any registered shipping method.

So this might be kinda random... but I'm playing through Yakuza 0 right now...

And is it just me not knowing how to play the game? Or does the fighting really suck? Like I get ganged up by these guys and they just keep punching me and I can't even get a button out. I got sandwiched between 2 guys and they just kept punching me infinitely, and my character was so slow I couldn't punch back or roll or block. When I do get out, I have 5 dudes running and hitting me with jumping knee strikes and they keep interrupting my moves. I'm having a surprisingly hard time with this game...

I don't remember having a hard time with the battles. I wouldn't recommend staying in the fast hitting Kiryu style (forgot the name) since it's somewhat weak and charges heat slowly, but otherwise the fighting  is a bit clunky but not bad. Also blocking is your friend....just do that for a bit.

I change across the 3 pretty frequently depending on the situation. The problem with blocking is that I still take damage, and they start to overwhelm me once they get behind me and stuff. Also, even if I block, my attacks get interrupted when I try to counterattack after blocking, and the enemies don't seem to have an opening or anything so I just stay blocking for a while.

You better not be using beast style lol
Yeah I figured after seeing how slow the normal attacks are, that it's not the best style. But it's great when you are near a bike or something and just kill 5 enemies in like 10 seconds. I'm using the Blue grabbing style mostly, since it gives me some super-armor, but even then fast hitting enemies just break through that as well.

The thing is, 1 vs 1 is super easy, like I can beat the bosses with my eyes closed. But when you fight like 5 guys, they start juggling you around and stuff. There was one instance where I fought 5 dudes with swords, and I couldn't even get off the floor, they just kept hitting me when I was down. Thought it had to be a glitch or something.

Welcome to Japanese action games not from From and P+.

I still have gripes toward Dark Cloud, because guarding seems to give you negative frames. So the only defense is offense.

Or every Kingdom Hearts without Leaf Bracer and Once More.

Also make sure you don't have the signed book accessory equipped. I forgot the name but you get it pretty early on and it says something about fans coming after you. I about quit the game early on because I was getting destroyed by everyone and when I unequipped it the game chilled out and became rather manageable. Also Beast style is best style once you get it powered up and is comedicly OP.

A new Mercy skin is available today for $15 with all proceeds going to Breast Cancer. It will be available until May 21st.

First a Twintail D.Va and now a Twintail Mercy, can we get a Twintail Tracer or Widowmaker next?

Well, I was going to post that with some extras, but since you already did here are the extras:

New Escort Map, Rialto has released live as of a week ago. Along with it came a patch that removes Hanzo's scatter arrow as well as making it much easier for Lucio to wallride. Not really sure how the former affects console users, but thanks to Hanzo's increased projectile speed included in that patch I've become halfway decent with him.

[customspoiler='Rialto Map Trailer']
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-p85vWBvug[/customspoiler]

Bonus note, the charity (Breast Cancer Research Foundation) for the Mercy skin gives 91% of all the money towards research which is really good/high. So it's a decent charity, unlike the Koman group that you frequently hear about with regards to Breast Cancer.

I might go for it since it's a good charity, but I don't care for twintails/pigtails personally.

I wasn't sure you were going to post it since I know you usually only do it for events. I'm surprised this is being done now rather than in October when it's Breast Cancer Awareness Month (tho I imagine the skin will come back in October).

I always wonder how much I could mention of my dislikes in this thread from time to time before I incite a mob. I usually opt to not bother mentioning them though.

It's not an issue either way. I doubt I would've noticed this until later today anyways since Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire released today and it's taking up my attention currently. However if the charity was some terrible one that doesn't put much towards research, then I wouldn't have bothered.

And I just deleted Overwatch yesterday. Well, it's not like I need to play the game during the window to get it. The question is when will I play Overwatch again. Since I've stopped playing it this year I've been playing some awesome games in my backlog.

Mercy's real name is Angela. Because of the pigtails I'm calling this her Lady Ann skin.

Twintail Tracer? How does that work?

Also, would love a twintail Brigettie.

Thank you, I'm actually really glad you mentioned this! WWE advertises Susan G. Komen every year, and almost no one who donates has any clue that they only donate like 10% of those donations to Breast Cancer research. Most of it goes into their own pockets. I think I've heard of BCRF before too, and I'm happy they picked this one.

Owlboy CE is up at Play-Asia.

$82.99
Does anyone know if the standard Owlboy release will include the manual? That is really the only thing in that CE that is of interest, but no way in hell I'm paying that price for just that. Normally when a manual is offered, it is almost always a part of the standard release, but just looking for conformation.

I have the standard pre-ordered either way, as this game has been on my radar for awhile now, but this CE is full of pretty useless items overall and a huge disappointment overall. But weak offerings saves me money, so all good.

I thought that CE was gonna be like $40. It doesn't even have an art-book, from what I can tell.

Owlboy is a $40 physical release at absolute highest. So, you get a notebook, an instruction manual (wow, we're advertising these now?), a couple pins and coins, a soundtrack and some stickers for, at the very least, $40.

What in the world were they thinking?

Pure greed basically. I, for one, am not buying at that price and I hope other people do the same. Standard edition at $23.99 will be fine for me :)

If Soedesco wants to see how to do a CE right, they can look no further than the recent Shantae: Half Genie Hero Ultimate Edition release for the Switch. You get the game with all the DLC, hardcover art book and full soundtrack CD for $31.99 after GCU (or $39.99 base price). Now that's a helluva deal and something I will gladly support every time!
