Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

It’s better than the old one, but it’s still unsettling. What’s with his giant quill-things being covered in fur, themselves?
 
Also, for those that bought the play asia dragon quest 1,2,3 switch multi language game and are STILL waiting, it should be arriving soon. At least I know that in reference to the north  American continent. I got mine yesterday and I saw some youtubers  that made videos of their copies that are in canada.

On the release itself:

The games are for sure on the cartridge. I put it in my switch and immediately it was ready to play - no download at all. The interesting bit is that since it contains three games, each game has its own icon on the menu. Which is strange because if you got the Mana collection, which are both by SE, it just has one icon and you then click into the game where it has an in game menu that allows you to pick which one you want to play. I'd never seen this before lol.

Also, the games start up with the language of your switch from what I assume. When I started DQ 1 just to take a look, it never asked what language I wanted to play in, it simply started in english. I think it reads your system before starting. Which is also different than the Mana release because it allows you to pick the language before you start.

Everything else about the games you can find in reviews on youtube, like how good the ports themselves are. So I wont go into too much detail on that. These are just some unique oddities that I noticed. Also, the box art is all in what I believe to be mandarin? Even the spine is - so when you put it on your shelf it doesn't say "Dragon Quest" in english. The inside of the box contains solely the cartridge, no manual and no reversible cover, also unlike the mana collection release.

I guess my verdict is to only buy this if you desperately want the games physically and in english no matter what.

 
Did anyone else have a ridiculous time against Maeda Toshiie in the Nioh 2 demo? I beat Kamaitachi on my first try (admittedly, I was probably overleveled), and beat Yatsu-no-Kami before he could even summon the dark realm on my seventh or eight try, and that was without even changing equipment since beating Kamaitachi.

But Maeda is like smashing my face against a wall. He practically doesn’t flinch, he’s got ridiculous health, his stamina recovers too fast, his reach at least matches any weapon you can use, he regularly attacks from both right and left so you can’t reliably flank him, and he attacks like a blender. It seriously doesn’t help that the field is full of those little stone pillars that makes it almost impossible to avoid him while your own stamina’s recovering. Even with the life leech talisman, I can’t recover health half as fast as he can take it off.

Am I missing some trick, or is the only way through this fight just to increase toughness and health to ridiculous heights so you can tank everything? Because I’ve been building for ninjutsu and onmyo, so if so, I’m just straight up fuck ed.

Agreed. It's just dumb when a VN (Our World is Ended) makes claims about itself in comparison to S;G. Bad marketing.

Also that graphic misspelled kongroo. Unless it was made by Luka-chan, in which case it's perfectly in character.

Yeah, I remember playing a bunch of Our World is Ended, but never got around to finishing it. Not that it was bad or anything, it just got lost in my backlog of games over time.

The game was a lot better than I was expecting. The perverted dialogue was a bit much in the beginning, but as the game went on it became a natural thing and also pretty hilarious at times. Also, if you don't want to play this kind of content around others, the Switch version's portability really shines here.

Story also took an interesting turn halfway through and made things a lot more engaging. Also, I really like the art style of the game.

I'd recommend it unless you're not a fan of the occasional perverted humor. Plus, at that price it's even better. Especially if it has the mini-artbook.

Mommykami is one of the more popular ones, but it's also one of the more taboo relationships because of the student/teacher aspect. Not to mention the ambiguous wording on what she might or might not do for her secondary career.

Was surprised yesterday to find Shenmue 3 from my kickstarter order in the mailbox.  That's gotta be a first that a kickstarter game arrived earlier than retail.   I haven't broken the seal, but just happy this long journey is now up to me actually making the time to play through the series.   Hopefully this sells well and Shenmue 4 is done so we can wrap up the entire story.

The slipcover is so incredibly lame. Like, if they're going to offer something special like that for Kickstarter backers, they should put maybe a tiny bit of effort into it.

True... but... just happy this didn't end up delayed like most kickstarter games and I had the game in hand a day early. The slip cover... I'll probably never even use. For me, this was all about supporting one of my all time favorite devs for one of my all time favorite series. Hopefully the game is as good as the others.

If those are the nominees then yes, they're clearly setting it up for a Death Stranding win 100%

Too easy of a good headline to draw attention from the movie industry, given all the semi-known actors in the game.

Just like last year when RDR2 nearly swept, I feel like hype and release timing is more rewarded than actual quality at the Game Awards.

Also, FFVIIIR deserves GOTY.
