Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

I've never really liked his art, including when I first watched Plastic Little in the mid 90s.
His work is technically good, but the style is very distinctive, which makes it very much a matter of taste. I’m not a big fan of the way he does faces or coloring.

That said, what little I’ve seen of the new art looks pretty insipid.

Be sure to check out the BF ad for Gamestop. They have more niche releases than other BF ads I believe. Eyeing AI and Trails of Cold Steel 3 myself. Prices aren't super amazing, but some of these games take a bit longer to go down in price.

Also adding that I haven't really kept everyone informed of recent VN releases. I'll do a quick rundown this weekend of the last 3 weeks or so of major releases and mentioning what I've played.

I will start with Funbag Fantasy 2 was released by Mangagamer and is on Steam and Mangagamer in 18+ versions. It has a launch week discount. I started and almost finished it within 1 night. Got a bit less sleep and I should finish it today. It has very, very high quality art, a pretty cool fantasy setting, decent enough characters, and a pretty good story. One major negative against it is the deja vu of the story telling reflecting Funbag Fantasy 1 closely except with different archetypes at points. I also felt that one was a bit more epic overall, but this one is good too. Another weird quirk is the animations loading in different images sometimes are slow (characters coming in and such). Very annoying. I am enjoying it more than Funbag Fantasy Sideboob Story which I felt had a pretty weak story overall and most of the non fantasy parts related to
the mc having love making sessions with his many wives which became very samey.
I read very quickly though so many people will likely finish it in about 20 hours or so. For me it will take 11 or so. Recommended though I would recommend starting with the first 1, though you can easily start with this one. 7.5/10 very likely as the ending seems very predictable but i'll see when I get it in another hour or 2.

I remember seeing this ad in a friends anime magazine back in high school and just ripping the page out when he was gone so I can have a proper chance to read the ad later at home.

How reliable are GameStop refurbished systems? I’ve been meaning to pick up a Wii U forever for a few of the niche games that never made it to other systems, but the price just never felt right; $80 seems like a decent deal if I can count on the thing not crapping out on me, though.

when i turn in my old consoles 360 and ps3 back in the day, all they did was turn it on check one game to make sure it played and call it a day. so their no way too say if you get a barley used mint console or  one that will crap out after warranty  expires, if they even offer one been a while since i traded anything.

Any and EVERYTHING at Gamestop is a YMMV situation, as that goes for the new as well as used since they "open" things, and still have the nerve to call it new. As for refurbished, there is no standard or specs they must meet, as it's whatever is turned in as "working", and what shape it may be in with less than a minute of testing.

You may get a like new system that doesn't run, or one beat to hell and back that runs perfectly. The best I can recommend is that if you go that route, test the hell out of it once you get it home, and if you have the slightest issues, return it ASAP. There are good used systems to be had at GS, but it's a crap shoot, just like buying used games online, as you can and will get any number of possible outcomes. None of which are ever that good, but many here see good success pretty regularly, so good luck! LOL

I know this is a tired conversion in this thread, but I'm amused that the poster is censored.

Quick heads up, Best Buy’s Black Friday ad lists Persona Q2 at $24.99, but they currently have it on sale for $19.99.

No idea if it’s a price error or what, I just ordered one myself so we’ll see what happens. Easily the best price I’ve seen so far, though.

EDIT:
Looks like the BF prices for the Yakuza series are live too, except for Judgment which is on sale, but $5 higher than their BF ad.

Last year I got my brother a PS3 (fat but not BC model obviously) and a 360 (seemed to be a launch era one) with their blast from the past bundles or whatever they're called. The 360 has worked perfectly and we've never had problems with it, the PS3 seemed to overheat and shut itself off after about an hour. Took it back and got it replaced within a week. But they make you buy a new protection plan if they replace it which is some hot garbage. That PS3 still works perfectly though thankfully.

But yeah, pretty ymmv I'd say.

A new collabaration between Dead or Alive 6 and the anime Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru (How heavy are the dumbbells you lift) will be coming soon along with Rachel as a new playable character.

I would never buy a refurb from Gamestop. It's a crapshoot with way too high of a chance for it to be of shitty quality. If Nintendo still sells refurb units, though, then I'd 100% buy one of those. From what I've seen with the 3DS, they basically replace all of the outside parts on their refurbs, making them essentially brand new.

Yeah, they still sell other system "refurbs", but the Wii U boat set sail years ago, and probably won't be back. Ebay would probably be the best bet at this point over GS, as at least you can go by feedback and a proper description of the product.

I bought a new3ds for $100 from them recently and it's great. Ymmv but you can always return/swap out

Iffy Store's Holiday Sale is live.

http://www.iffysonlinestore.com/

Dark Rose Valkyrie LE and Fairy Fencer F :AD LE are both discounted to 20 bucks. Pretty tempting prices.

Edit: ouch. Cheapest shipping option is 15 bucks for 1 or 20 for both. Free shipping kicks in at 58 dollars. Maybe If I decide to get Super Nep RPG LE (60).
Thanks! I grabbed the Fairy Fencer F LE because I love that game, and Death end re;Quest because I have yet to see that game in stores and it looks like it's either disappearing online or going up in price. Came to $59.98 total, so got the free shipping. I'm happy with that. :)

FYI, these are all price matches to either Best Buy or Gamestop, though I'm sure CAG appreciates the order through the CAG Amazon affiliate links.

I'm pretty disappointed by Iffy's sale, and that was the one I was looking forward to. Wanted to pick up a few LEs for the steelbooks, but the steelbooks being G1 and the minimal discount are pretty good deterrents.

Oh well, I guess I'll wait and see if they have a Christmas sale or something.

I didn't realize they are G1, that's basically a dealbreaker and kinda dumb in this day an age. No chance it's a misprint in listing the size dimensions?

Nope, I got Death;End a while ago and it's definitely a G1. Dragon Star, Neptunia, and Date-A-Live (all of the ones I had my eye on) all seem to be the same unfortunately.

Thanks man, dodge a bullet there. Sorry for your loss. I don't know what the heck they were thinking.

Oh, I don't hate that they're G1 cases, it just influences the amount I'm willing to pay. I was pretty surprised with Death;End, but c'est la vie.

If the prices dip lower I'll probably still scoop them up, but the Black Friday sale is kinda paltry from my perspective. Probably just skewed by last year's Iffy sale though.
