Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Hey it's one way a cag enjoys his collection, seems fine to me.

Personally I would have been too paranoid at the possibility of scuffing my cases.  8-[

Well, 1 month later I've finally finished P5R.  As a digital owner of P5 I wasn't happy about this release at $60.  Ended up doing the $40 amz launch edition (that I posted here) and now feel differently.  Was worth every penny of that.  In my view, I'd call it the single best standalone ps4 game.

Platinum trophy came naturally right when I finished the game without any extra chasing.  Was probably a little too easy but I'm thankful there was no trophy for navigation lines this time.

I'd have to agree with this. Only a 1/3rd of the way through P5R and rather surprised at how much has been revised, rerecorded, or added to the game from base P5. It's starting to become rather clear why this was not a simple DLC pack and a stand alone (re)release instead.

well I ordered a crap load of games from the 50% off sale for gamestop.  12 games for 70 bucks is not bad.  xenoblade x wiiu being among them rpg wise.

Now you have motivated me to plat P5R to snag all of these. Honestly looking over the list it really doesn't look all that hard aside from one fight in particular.

The only thing you really need to keep in mind is that one fight (easy late game) and then to win the weekly lotto at some point. Now I realize why this trophy list is easier - to make the bonus plat items accessible.

The velvet room avatar is actually good. Will be using that along side my kiseki avatars.
..Can't quite bring myself to use the loli twins theme.

I guess one tip I would have for P5R playthroughs is [customspoiler='the mildest of original P5 spoliers']
to not sink any time into being picky while fusing personas for the first half of the game.  Once network fusion opens up, you gain access to endgame innate traits. This made a lot of my early builds obsolete. Ended up overwriting many of them (wasting time) as traits cannot be changed after fusion.

and I guess that's related to my main misgiving about P5R.  It needs a difficulty well above Merciless to cater to those who have fun being perfectionists with their builds.  Oh and there were two bgm tracks I hated from P5, and they only revised one.  Played most of that area on mute.

Nice to know about those platinum bonuses. I really don't care about chasing trophies, but I might have to in this case.

Which tracks didn't you care for?

They made p5r plat easy since theres a very comprehensive ingame achievement system. My only gripe is I loved the new bgm and boss theme in the new palace, and it feel too quick to beat.

1. Original P5 Mementos track. In P5R they made it better. It's now dynamic as you move through areas, similar to the bgm change that would happen when ascending a new area of Tartarus in P3.

2. Casino palace bgm. Makes my ears bleed.

That said, I like the overall music direction of the game. It's just those tracks I hate.
(The post above mentions the new palace bgm.. I liked it. Felt like it came right out of Chrono Cross or something.)

Ah, I could see how you'd get tired of the Mementos track.

You know, I would have guessed one of them would be the Casino bgm. Personally I love it and loved the change from instrumental to vocals for that palace (seemed to fit the theme too imo). But you can't discuss taste *shrug*

Nice to hear the new palace has good music, CC has a great soundtrack =)

Just to be clear, I'm not referring to the track that scales up from instrumental to vocals on the final day. That is a nice touch. It's the looping song you're forced to listen to while completing the first 3 floors.

I wonder, is Persona 6 is in the works???  Man Persona 5 is sooo good.  I hope that they're working on making a new one immediately instead of waiting nine years like in-between 4 and 5 again.

Like many people, I've been thinking of a  potential P3 remaster.  But then I came to the conclusion that it would make little sense.  Because if they remastered P3 on the same level as P5 then you might as well just make an entirely new game instead.

P5R is cool.  It's good that Atlus can cash in on some spinoffs.  But I don't want them to keep riding this wave of remakes and handheld side stories.  I hope the next one will come out soon.   It has already been three years already since P5 released.  So I am hoping to get a new game on PS5 in a year or two.

i mean from P4 to P5 was like 10 11 years, see yall in 2030ish for p6 kekw.

at least SMT5 is coming rite?

I platted P5 Royal today but I never get emails for anything like that even though I'm subscribed.

edit: Actually I did get the year end stuff last year come to think of it so maybe it did get fixed,

On the subject of P6 it would be nice it it's not 9 years away but right now I'd rather the focus is on SMT5.

edit2: or maybe that fantasy game they showed early artwork years back if that's still happening? I had forgotten about it. New IP could also be nice.

p3 wise if they did a remake using p5's engine that would cut costs significantly over making a brand new game.

It's shocking that they haven't made P3/P4 HD re-releases considering all the assets they have from P5 and the dancing spinoffs.

I didn't even think of that part so yeah they could save quite a bit since all but the actual town itself has been done. Though I'm not sure p4 would be doable compared to 3 since inaba is the boonies while iwantodie is a large city.

Yeah, Whims of Fate, right? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aj7ecVrNdPU) Being the only vocal palace track I can see how it might be disliked by some

I'm sure they probably have started thinking about it now that P5R is done, but with their typical dev time (not just on Persona), I think we should just hope it comes out this coming generation (p5/xsx) at all

However, P5 Scramble continues the P5 story and while it's not done by Atlas, they are publishing it and should have had a hand in the development. A western release hasn't been announced, but it's still possible to come out this year (though that's less likely I'd imagine with everything going on) or I'd imagine definitely next year.

It is surprising though that they haven't made a port of P3 & P4 to current gen systems. I'd imagine people would be just fine with a remaster and don't need a remake to buy it. You'd think they would just contract a 3rd party to do it like so many other companies, but maybe they don't trust anyone else to do it?

I’m still waiting on Project Re:Fantasy
That was the name of it. I couldn't remember for the life of me what it was called. I'd love a P3 & P4 remaster but not going to hold my breath on them at this point. I only hope the bombs that were dancing all night don't cause them to back out of P5 Scramble. Yeah, they did that survey the other month but you'd figure they would have wanted to cash in on the P5R hype as quickly as possible.

The Koei Tecmo (Developer, Atlus published) financial release earlier this month had a line on their earnings report saying there would be further sales when the overseas version of Persona 5 Scramble launches. It's just a matter of when.

Denpasoft/Sekai Project are having a sale on their games. This lasts until until May 25th, 10am PST. This does include new releases Victory Project and Fallen Maidens ~jalouse~ Shiori's Story, which are on Denpasoft.  Machina of the Planet Tree -Unity Unions- is also on sale for 13 more hours on Steam.

Denpasoft Specials (NSFW)
Steam Specials

There is a Denpasoft 10% off code of StayInside. This applies to most digital products and games older than Mahou Arms.

Finally finished the fear the deer route for fire emblem three houses. It was meh. A lot of stuff felt like it was pulled out of nowhere. Rhea is a horrible person. The only thing that comes out of it is how the slithering organization is possibly defeated in the other route.

Did you play the other routes? By accident, I chose the true route first playthrough, and a lot of things didn't make sense, or weren't explained. Went through all three schools.

I went Blue Lion route, which has a lot of character “development”, but the story doesn’t ever answer any questions, and they just kind of end the war without any resolution. You have to play all four routes to really get a full grasp on the story apparently, though I couldn’t stick with it.

The route splitting is pretty poorly done in three houses. Doesn’t merit playing all the routes story wise, and gameplay wise they are all 70% the same anyway. Replaying with different characters and difficulties is the only point.

Somewhat true. The stories are drastically different in each route. Some characters are plain dead after the route split dying off screen. Some characters are completely different like demitri to the point where the eagles route has him not batshit and without the eyepatch. But they piece meal important bits in the other routes. Not counting paralogues on top of that.

Yeah they did a horrible job. The saddest part is that they have eagles and church that can be done from the same playthrough but the other two require full new playthroughs. And since the game is copy pasted no matter what route until the actual split I found that incredibly stupid. Same for picking a house before getting to use any of them.

Blazing blade and sacred stones did it better. Hell if fates hadn't been a cash grab I would say it did it decent as well.

I ordered Our World is Ended Day 1 Edition (PS4) from Amazon when it hit $15.91.  They mailed it in a plain plastic bag (no padding).  Amazingly the game arrived with no damage to the box.

It would have made way more sense to choose a class to teach based on knowing practically nothing, followed by a mid game decision on who you support in the war, based on what you learned or did, or even just a free choice.

Or just have you teaching all the kids and then pick a side so you get to use all units. Not like you don't get to use 99% of them anway. as there's maybe 10 of them total that are exclusive to whatever routes.

Wow, I'm late, but I never thought I'd hear (read) that someone *hated* "Whims of Fate" on the P5 soundtrack. I thought it was *clearly* the *best* song on the soundtrack. This is truly a case of 'to each his/her own.'

As for P5R, I'm just before the Hawaii trap and already nearly a 100 hours in.  You'd think I never played P5 vanilla the way I'm tooling around in there.

And the extra Mementos tracks was the single best thing they could have done. I was so happy to hear the new tracks.

Idk if any of y’all follow the CE thread but a few of us have been able to Snag EU Xenoblade CEs shipped directly to the USA at amazon UK. Even though it says “doesn’t ship to us” It still let us checkout with a US Address, just have to monitor for when it comes back in stock and if it tries to make you change address keep trying

Haha i agree with everything you wrote. I'm also the day before the Hawaii trip, and am at over 80 hours. I feel like I played through he original way faster than that. Perhaps the additional free times at night time really added up

Gamestop has a B2G1 free on new and used games. Certain new switch titles excluded.

Good opportunity to grab Final Fantasy 7R, Persona 5 Royal or Sakura Wars if you haven't already. Langrisser's a good pick too.

Amazon's price for the standard edition of Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive is down to $49.94.

If you're looking to get the Xenoblade Definitive Works edition, the only place I still found it available is on walmart. Not sure if they'll be able to have enough in stock or keep the delivery date but here's hoping.

Thanks for the heads up. I just ordered a copy. I knew waiting a bit was the right decision on this one.
I wanted to show support but at the same time I'm not entirely convinced I will like the game. I would give it a go at $40 if my PS4 disc drive wasn't on it's last legs so I'm waiting for $30 digital. (or if it drops to $30 physical I'll get it and just wait until I have a PS5 to play it)
