Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Can anyone comment on how performance is for Danganronpa on Switch and if it's worth the "anniversary edition".? I'm debating whether to keep the Switch version or get it on PC during the Winter Sale. Or just wait for the game to drop in price.

I have one of the older Etrian games on DS (2 I think), but if I want to pick up one of the more recent ones on 3DS, should I just go with the latest Nexus, or would one of the others be a better choice?

Get either 4 or 5. Nexus is kinda boring, and is a mishmash of 1-5.

General assessment seems to be that EO3, 4, 5, and Untold 2 are the best entries, though the specific order between them differs depending on who’s listing. Nexus offers a lot of customization due to all the classes from previous games, but seems to be less popular overall regarding the rest of its content.

I'll also tell you to avoid Nexus. It's just way too long and boring, even for someone like me who loved 1-5.

I'd go with 4, it's a little more interesting than 5 and has a fun world map to explore.

I would also recommend either EO IV or Untold 2 as the best choices.

Thanks for the advice all, picked up EO 4 & Rhythm Thief. Also, while checking my physical games to make sure I didn't already have Rhythm Thief, it turns out I already had Untold 1 & 2 lol

Also season pass having the voice over story mode....like really? I usually get these games Asian English, but knowing I will need DLC, I will likely just wait for the western digital version to go to a lesser price.

Having multiple PSN accounts is easy. Filling them with funds isn't as easy though. Usually have to buy cards from that region to get some credit, which I do once in a blue moon.

Just as a quick reminder: Persona Q came out at a time there were quality issues with cartridges and you might not actually have a physical copy anymore.

Wow. I never knew about this. That's fucked up. Do we know of any other 3DS cartridges where that is the norm as well?

I've still got the Wild Cards edition of PQ sealed.  I'm not likely going to open it and check ... but will just sell it on.

....

Flashing back to my Gamestop order with Kingdoms of Amalur (Switch) and Lost Judgment (PS4).   Surprisingly both showed up in the mail sealed with no signs of ever being opened.  Lost Judgment had the ole ps4 lose disc deal... so I opened it and fixed that (I know there are ways to do it without opening it, but the goal here is to play this game).   Of course Amalur dropped from the $20 I paid to $16 yesterday... but then I would have had to pay shipping as I have nothing to really pair it with right now.  So $20 was still the better deal.

So 2021... overall a decent year for my orders with GS.  Granted all but this one were store pickup.

I should probably go back and see what all I bought this year.  Overall I think I spent a lot less than last year which was down from the previous year which was down from the previous years.   Focusing on games I will play and sometimes even paying a premium ... as well as narrowing my focus a great deal has paid off a lot in spending much less than when I was a diehard cag (most stuff I could get for the cheapest price).  2022... I'm hoping to keep my purchases down to maybe 12 physical games.  Though if I break it, so what.

If you can stick with it I think it's the way to go for sure. Our brains try so hard to prevent feelings of regret "Oh I wish I had gotten it when it was cheap", but I agree that if you just buy what you want when you want to play it, even if you pay more, overal you'll be paying less (or at the very least less in the short term and you can use that money for other things), you'll only be getting things you want to play immediately.

I have a hard time sticking with it. One bad month at work or downtrodden week and I go back to the dopamine of getting a new game. Need to train my brain to be excited about playing a new game instead of getting it :p

I thought I had done well then I scoured my purchase history )and my memory for in person purchases) on Best Buy, Amazon, Gamestop, Walmart, Gamefly, Ebay, Limited Run Games, Family Dollar, Five Below, and the Nintendo Eshop and my total was $747.66 ! I still think that's better than the previous year as that year also included some hardware (switch lite, ipad, New 2DS XL, etc). Still, I wasn't expecting over $700. At least 2022 I have a new number to beat (not that I need to... but I hope it's possible).

Still, I have very little from this year that I regret buying and most stuff was bought physical so I can sell it off later if I get tired of something (or truly feel done with it).

Below is the list if anyone is curious... and I included the url for how to check eshop purchases.

Best Buy:
$ 49.04 Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (Switch)
$ 65.39 The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV Frontline Edition (Switch)

I did preorder on Amazon "The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure" (Switch) but that'll be charged $37.79 at a later date .... so no point in adding it to 2021 purchases.

I don't even want to think about how much I bought this year. Especially the 10 preorder games from the b3g2. I'd assume that I spent at least 1k.

Yeah it's amazing how much we cags actually end up spending on games while attempting to be "cheap".

I looked through my collection last night... pretty sure I actually managed to list everything I bought for the year. Even though I feel like I did better than that... it's kind of like the whole project I did narrowing down my collection and still ending up with right at 200 physical games which seems like a lot but it all fits in two small media cabinets with still a little space to expand. So I'm not really as bothered at the number as I thought I'd be (when I really wanted to see it down to around 100 games).

I mean just on the 10 preordered titles I got them for 24 off each. Plus the cash back on rakuten and my card. Since iirc 240 from the 4 titles divided up on the 10 games.

I know this year two games I pre-ordered I got bit badly on during BF/Christmas sales were SMT V (ugg) and Lost Judgement. I love supporting Sega especially for any Yakuza type games, but they drop so fast now within a month or two I may just wait. It's not 100% like before were if you didn't buy it on release Sega would likely say screw it for newer games. Will likely only pre-order the nichest of the niche and things I know I will play immediately to cut back from those sales. Atlus games don't necessary qualify for that anymore or NISA games although both have nicher releases.

Yup everything but cold steel 4 and Ys 9 dropped like a stone. Only conciliation is disgaea 6 was part of the b3g2 so I didn't pay that much for it.

I got Lost Judgement and FFVII for the preorder steelbook at gamestop, which I am fine with since the stellbook hold their value.

Happy New Years! My spending this year totaled over 5 figures just between BBY and GameStop. I would post pictures of my collection but some CAG members will get upset over duplicates.

post the pictures

dont worry about those people

3 houses had a boxed edition? And blue reflection as well. I wasn't aware of that.
3 Houses CE print pretty limited, sold out during preorder, don't think anymore were made during launch.

Blue Reflection Second Light LE is NISA exclusive, less physical goods than other regions counterpart (no canvas bag and no towel). Cost about the same too.
