Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Have other people started to get their P5 Royal CE from Atlus? I remember seeing somone saying they received theirs but I haven't gotten any updates.

Also just got a notification from NISA that there's a delay in shipment... love how they have no issues processing payment 3-4 weeks early though.

Nothing here. Though I ordered something else from them and didn't get a shipping notice till a few days after it arrived, so who knows =/

Been busy but am mentioning some visual novels that came out recently and have release discounts.

First of all JAST USA released Gore Screaming Show. This is a horror visual novel and I've heard it's a bit disturbing. I am linking the 18+ Steam patch, and it's a good idea to play with the patch or from their website as the game on Steam is pretty heavily censored and missing routes. It has a 10% discount until November 18th.

JAST USA also released Slow Damage, which is a BL game. It looks very high quality being a Nitro+chiral title.

Sekai Project/Denpasoft released the final part in the trilogy of A Clockwork Ley-Line: Flowers Falling in the Morning Mist. It is highly recommended to play them in order as the story builds off the previous ones. There is an 18+ patch for the Steam version not needed for the Denpasoft version. There is a 10% discount until November 18th.

Also Fakku released St. Yariman's Little Black Book ~Complete~ from Orcsoft. This is a remake of a 2011 VN. This looks like a nukige about a guy who worked all his life for his wife and she ends up cheating on him. He ends up getting divorced and this is his story right after that where he meets five escorts.

Gore Screaming Show is the probably the most R18 VN on Jast USA... and that's saying quite a lot.

Great news on Berserk. I already have a copy so I'll be sitting out, but I know it's been overpriced for a while. Hopefully this helps correct the market.

The game itself is fine. It's a poor way to experience Berserk's story for the first time, though. There's a lot that they truncate or just skip over. Normally I'm not a stickler on having to read the source material first, but Berserk is legitimately one of the greatest stories I've encountered in any medium. I'd hate for that to be the way someone is introduced to the IP. Gameplay is exactly what you'd expect from a musou, and there are a good variety of characters that feel like they represent the characters in the series well.

Sword of Berserk (DC) is a bit different. It just has a side story that has no real implication on or retelling of the main plot. Band of the Hawk (the PS4 game) is a retelling of the manga's plot from the Golden Age arc to the Milennium Falcon arc (about 300 chapters of the manga and 25 years of its publication run). In order to cover that much ground, they shorten pretty much every arc and omit a few entirely.

One time open order reprint for Berserk Band of the Hawk PS4

VGP said they tried to get Godzilla reprinted but prob due to licensing issue, that's a no go

Oof... I made bad calls on Attack on Titan Final Battle and Berserk Band Hawk and paid a LOT for used copies of both (as in... a LOT) because I didn't think they'd ever get reprinted. Oh well, maybe I'll learn one day......

Of course, Godzilla was the one I didn't overpay for so that one's not getting a reprint. LOL

My copies of diofield harvestella and triangle strategy came today from the target b2g1. I wasn't aware that harvestella was already out this month so I didn't expect it.

I'd have liked to start harvestella but with Pokémon coming up it'll just have to wait.

if you have a moderate interest in imports you should be buying stuff straight from japan right now cause the exchange rate is too good

Import-only for now, but it has English: https://www.play-asia.com/search/samurai+maiden

I've been burned a few times this year by NA releases being announced after the overseas versions were out for a while, so I'm probably going to bide my time on this one.
Looks like this one is going to take the Onechanbara route and release overseas only for retail. Can't say I'm surprised.

I feel you. I held out on Onee Chanbara ORIGIN myself expecting the local physical release to eventually happen and that one weirdly never did, as Mattiful-Joe said.

Yeah, Onechanbara was a weird one and it looks like it's no longer available at Play-Asia. It's always a gamble because sometimes stuff gets a reprint or hangs around and other times stuff winds up like Buried Stars or Melty Blood - sells out immediately and rockets up in price.

Also agreed on taking advantage of the import situation now. I've been buying some figures from Solaris and the exchange rate's never been better.

I got some FFVII Remake Play Arts/Static Arts preorders at Amazon JP and wish I could just prepay for them so I can lock in the rate now.

With Onechanbara Origins only the Asian version is in English so that sold out pretty quickly. The Japanese verison is more common but doesn't include English text. Buried Stars is a Korean only game with no Japanese release. Really no idea why there aren't more copies of Melty Blood.

NISA skipped on Utawarerumono Zan 2 so I think they are done with the series.

Denpasoft/Sekai Project released Hoshizora no Memoria -Eternal Heart- HD was released today with a 10% discount. This is the fan disc specifically expanding the Mare route and Yume route and has 5 short stories for the other 5 heroines from the main game. I never finished the main game, and had like 2 routes left, which are likely the ones important to this. The translation of the original needs retranslating though, but you should play this after the main game.

Mangagamer is releasing How a Healthy Hentai Administers Public Service! on December 15th. There is 10% off the pre-order price.

Bustafellows is 29.99 cad (22.35 usd) on vgpca https://videogamesplus.ca/collections/sales/products/bustafellows-switch

https://smile.amazon.com/Legend-Heroes-Trails-Steel-playstation-4/dp/B07KMNJXZD/ cold steel 2 ps4 eu version is 23.69 on amazon.
same seller also has cs1 ps4 eu version for 23.20 https://smile.amazon.com/Legend-Heroes-Trails-Steel-playstation-4/dp/B07KK6D28X/

I'd actually consider getting those 2 cold steel games to complete my ps4 set assuming the save data carry over for 3 and 4 works regardless of region.

Valkyrie Elysium is currently $40 at Amazon, Best Buy, and Target. Diofield Chronicle is also $40, and the new Star Ocean is $50.

I know people don't like star ocean much anymore but as a fan being non biased, it was worth full price to me if you plan to do end game content as well.

I wasn’t impressed with the SO6 demo, but I bought it for forty with the Target B2G1 anyway. The AP restriction hasn’t been as restrictive as I feared, and I finally got a character I enjoy controlling. It definitely feels like they needed to do a finishing polish on overall game mechanics before the final release.

Apparently everyone else seems to have had the same feeling as the middle ones are winning by over twice the vote counts for the other 2 covers.

Anywho my copy of soul hackers 2 from best buy came today and the case is smashed, cracked and there looks to be a large half inch by 1/4 inch gash on the side where it would open on the front like someone stabbed it with a flat head screwdriver or something. I'm not even going to attempt to open it to see the condition of the disc since it's technically still within the plastic wrap and obviously I'm not paying for new condition to get something in this condition.  Now I just have to figure out how to get them to give me a replacement.

According to the website you have to do returns in store.  Problem there is that the closest best buy is about 20 minutes away. And that's assuming they have any copies on hand to do it as last time when I bought Nier automata and they gave me 3 copies of the outer worlds by mistake.  They didn't have any for replacements for nier nor did they give me any sort of gift credit for my inconvenience let alone for the plus in their favor. I could have easily sold those 3 copies for almost 6x what I paid for nier which was 14.99 and they would have been out the cost of each of those games which was around 30$ each at the time if not more.

Should be able to just bring it to store and ask for an exchange.
