Japanese Video Game Figure Thread

This thread is dedicated to Japanese produced video game figures. In the past, Japanese figures were mostly used for manga and anime characters, but lately they have started making figures from video game franchises. This is more of an awareness announcement than a deal thread since figures can easily sell out long before they are available and the second hand market can be crazy expensive. Pre-ordering is usually the cheapest way to get a popular figure.

Released Figures:

To give you an idea of what Japanese figures look like, the following are some that have been released over the years:

About Japanese Figures:

Scale figures, like Zero Suit Samus, are statues made of ABS and PVC. Scale are bigger than Figma, more detailed, and again for display rather than play. Scale figures are not posable and may not come with accessories or alternate facial expressions.

Figma is like an action figure but higher quality. Figma are very posable and come with accessories, alternate faces, and alternate hands to recreate poses from the source material (as well as make up your own scenarios). Check out all the different display poses they show off in pics. While they are designed with posability in mind, these are still meant for display rather than play. These aren't like action figures you would give a kid. Many Figma parts are compatible with other Figmas, allowing you to create interesting combinations of outfits and expressions.

Nendoroid are cutesy interpretations of characters. Each is about 4" tall and, like Figma, usually comes with various faces/hands/accessories to reproduce poses/scenes from the source material. Also like Figma, many Nendo parts are compatible with other Nendos. Faces, hair, hands, and outfits can often be swapped between characters.

Real Action Heroes (RAH) are like a blend of scale figure, Figma, and doll. They are still made of ABS and PVC, but the clothes are made of fabric, giving them a more realistic look. RAH are posable like Figma and typically include accessories and alternate faces. They are bigger than your average scale figure and very high quality. Accordingly, they are also exceedingly expensive.

Shipping:

Don't forget about shipping cost. SAL small packet registered should cost $10-20 and takes about 2-3 weeks to reach me in Florida. SAL may also be available unregistered for 410 JPY less, but you lose tracking and insurance (so if your package goes missing, you are sol). EMS is the best shipping and only takes about 2 days to arrive but is considerably more expensive. There is also SAL Parcel, but it is worth spending a little extra for EMS. You may have to use EMS if your item is too big to fit in a SAL box. I always use SAL registered when I can. If you pre-order multiple figures, you can combine shipping if they come out in the same month (assuming no delays) and save some money.

Shipping cost is based on weight. If you are ordering multiple figures at once, it is cheaper to request two SAL shipments than one EMS. It is also cheaper to combine items than do separate shipments for each. From my experience, 3-4 Nendoroid/Figma will fit in a single SAL box. A scale figure may fit with 1-2 Nendoroid/Figma boxes, depending on the scale and size of figure box used. Some figures come in larger boxes than expected. There is no way to know how large/heavy your figure will be before ordering. Some stores may offer an estimate at time of order or indicate that an item should be compatible with SAL.

SAL unregistered (no tracking or insurance) does not require a signature upon delivery. All other shipping methods do, so try to be home on delivery day. If you miss the delivery, you can stop by your local post office for pickup starting the next day.

Payment:

For most Japanese shops, you don't pay until the figure(s) is ready to ship. The exceptions are some limited edition items (which you'll have to pay for in full at time of purchase, including shipping) and certain stores that require a % deposit. Payment is best done through PayPal.

The current exchange rate can be viewed in PayPal -> Profile -> My Money -> Currencies (disclosure arrow of PayPal balance). The PP rate is always a little more expensive than the current rate since they charge a fee for the exchange (I believe 2.5%, the rate you see is already calculated with that fee). You can also opt to pay directly from your PP tied bank account or cc when checking out with PP.. You will have to check your bank and cc websites for their rate info, including whatever % fee they use for the exchange. Best case scenario would be to use a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees.

You will usually receive an invoice the day after an item is released. Shipping usually occurs the day after payment is sent, depending on the store.

Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

AmiAmi: http://www.amiami.com/
My favorite store. Among the best prices. Easily combine orders by month. Amazing pre-owned section. Shipping is usually a little more than other stores since they use lots of packing materials.

Hobby Link Japan: http://www.hlj.com/
My second favorite store. Usually a bit more expensive than the store listed here. In exchange for higher prices, you can cancel orders at any time. Private warehouse feature lets you hold items for up to 60 days to combine shipping, though you still pay for the figure at time of release. Excellent customer service.

Hobby Search: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/
Can combine orders of the same month but not as nicely as AmiAmi. Can cancel a pre-order within the first week of placing.

Big in Japan: http://biginjap.com/
Prices usually a little lower than the rest. Good selection of prize figures. Can pay for pre-orders upfront. Can combine orders by month if you send them a message through your order history page. Can act as proxy or forwarder. Not good at responding to emails, so I don't use them now as much as I used to.

Tokyo Otaku Mode: http://otakumode.com/
Charges in USD $, pay upfront at time of placing order. Regularly offers coupons and bonus point campaigns. Has a Premium membership that is well worth getting since it pays for itself ($15 for 3 months gives you $16.50 in points), 5% off everything, slightly cheaper shipping, and better coupons. You get $5 in points when you register your account, plus another $5 if you signup through a referral link (referrer also gets $5), making your first order $10 off. Excellent customer service.

Amazon Japan: https://www.amazon.co.jp/

Thanks to their Global program, many of their figures are now eligible to be shipped directly to your house rather than having to go through a proxy/forwarder. This is only available on figures fulfilled by Amazon, including those sold by third-party and fulfilled by Amazon. Not all Amazon fulfilled items are eligible for Global shipping. Shipping cost is very good (around RSAL cost) and very fast (3-6 days). Japanese consumption tax (8%) is removed from the advertised price at checkout.

Plamoya: http://www.plamoya.com
Check for sales, otherwise usually overpriced.

Secondhand Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

I buy a lot secondhand. The items are usually in great condition and, for most of my orders, have never been opened before. This lets me get figures I missed out on before I started collecting or couldn't budget at time of release.

AmiAmi Pre-owned: http://www.amiami.com/top/page/c/preowned.html
My favorite store for secondhand figures thanks to a daily updated selection, cheap shipping options, and combining pre-owned items with my pre-orders for that month. Items are rated by separate figure and box conditions. "A" condition means it looks brand new, "B" means there is some normal ware but should still be good, "C" or lower you should probably avoid (at least for figure condition, I personally don't care too much about secondhand box condition). Pricing is hit or miss, but usually good compared to other stores. Their selection is good and updated daily (except Sundays). Stock status is accurate when ordering.

Mandarake: http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shop/en/
Excellent source for secondhand figures. Mandarake is a web front for a collection of B&M hobby stores in Japan. Their selection is huge, pricing is great, and new items are added daily. Many of their secondhand items have never been opened. The condition is commonly something like "not opened/box damaged" which translates to it will look brand new when you get it :3 Each order can only be from a single store since it will be shipping from that one location. Because these are B&M stores, an item you ordered may sell out that same day in store (this has happened to me a few times). In that case, the item is removed from your order, or if your order is just one item, the order is cancelled. You can check boxes for "cancel order if this item is oos". You'll receive an email the following day with the items they were able to secure (hopefully everything in your order), the total including shipping, and a link to payment.

Suruga-ya: http://www.suruga-ya.jp/
Warning: Suruga-ya is in Japanese and requires a proxy or forwarder to get your items (see below for details).
Huge selection and low prices. Sales on items can randomly start at any time. Adding more items to your cart can give you a % discount. Stock system is accurate, at least from my experiences. As the website is only available in Japanese, use MFC to find the Japanese name of the character you are interested in so that you can perform a search.

Recommended US Shops:

Big Bad Toy Store (BBTS): http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/ (allows cancellations, no money down required on pre-orders, warehouse feature, $4 shipping)
Crunchyroll: http://www.crunchyroll.com/store/ (check for weekly deals, free shipping at $75)
Tokyo Otaku Mode (TOM): http://www.otakumode.com/ (I also count them as a US shop since some of their items are fulfilled by US warehouse, free shipping at $150)
Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/ (occasionally has some figures at good prices)

My Figure Collection:

MFC is an amazing (and free) community of figure collectors. It has info on all Japanese figures including release dates, pics, user ratings, reviews, etc. If you are interested in Japanese figure collecting, I highly recommend joining to keep track of your collection and follow the latest news on upcoming releases. Here's my MFC profile as an example: http://myfigurecollection.net/profile/Cantisama

CAG has an MFC club that you can join here: http://myfigurecollection.net/club/1219

Proxy and Forwarding:

There are two services when buying an item that cannot be shipped directly to your country, a proxy and a forwarder. A proxy is a business or person located in the host country (Japan in our case) that places an order on your behalf and then ships it to you.

With a forwarder, you are the one who places the order. You set the shipping address to that of the forwarder who is located in the host country. The forwarder then ships the package to you upon receipt.

Forwarding is typically cheaper than using a proxy since a proxy will charge a % fee based on order total that includes the cost of the item(s). Since with forwarding you are the one paying for the items directly, any % fee is only applied to the cost of shipping + a small forwarding fee. Using a proxy can be easier though since you don't have to place the order yourself on a website that may be only available in a foreign language.

There are many proxy and forwarding service providers. For Nendo Red from Amazon.co.jp, I used Big in Japan as a forwarder and the transaction went perfectly. Fees were also very reasonable.

I spotted this figure of Metallica from The Witch and the Hundred Knights on AmiAmi.

I haven't ordered a figure in years and I've lost track of the good and bad manufacturers.  How's Phat Company for quality?

I have no personal experience with them. They are a small company which seems to have more positive reviews than negative. You can view all their work by doing a search on http://myfigurecollection.net

This one looks like it will turn out well, but it's also very expensive, increasing the risk of ordering. I would feel more confident if a big company like Good Smile Company were making her, but it doesn't look like anyone other than Phat Company has a figure from this series planned. If you really like the series, then I say pre-order her. If you only kinda like the series, maybe wait for reviews and order after release.

Quick question - When companies post-pone figure is it because there changing details on the figures? Or are they just pushing it back to push more units?

It's rare for there to be last minute changes to a figure. Delays are usually for quality control or quantity boost. Sometimes a single part may have been produced poorly and they have to make a whole lot of them again. Large number of pre-orders or too many other figures in production at the same time can cause delays, as well as other types of problems like shipping and licensing. This year, Good Smile Company and Alter moved to a new factory and that screwed them both up pretty bad.

I have a lot of figures pre-ordered for the rest of the year so I am hoping for a few delays. RAH Link, please come out in January instead of November ^^;

Thanks for the response.

The figure i had pre-order was suppose to come out this past week, but it pushed back until November. Which is fine by me, but it screws up my budget for BF sales.

Here's hoping that the Samus Figma doesn't get delay.

Here's hoping that the Samus Figma doesn't get delay.
I don't even have a budget for BF thanks to figures. But unlike video games, figures don't necessarily stay around after release, so it's almost like you have to pre-order if you really want figures. It's hard to budget around figures at the end of the year since that seems to be such a popular release time.

Here's hoping that the Samus Figma doesn't get delay.
That would be a second delay for Figma Samus since she already got delayed from September to October. She doesn't have a firm October date yet, but I haven't heard anything about another delay.

Speaking of dates, Nendoroid Sonic re-release is coming out Oct 8.

Thanks for the reply. The cost and not knowing anything about the manufacturer is what made me hesitate to pre-order so far out from a release. After some more searching (thanks for the links), I think I'm going to wait and see. Thanks again for the advice.

I pre-ordered Exclusive Tanooki Mario a week ago. I'm excited for it.

Personally, I'm pissed Attack on Titan is this popular. There was a cool $2 bracelet on AmiAmi in green that I wanted...sold out. I pre-ordered the blue one for now :/

Also, Amiami has pink robbie the rabbit up for pre-order. It will probably sell out soon like Heather. There's a blue robbie the rabbit up on an exclusive japanese site.

roughly $120 + shipping...13 inches or so tall.

What shipping option should I pick? I picked SAL Small Packet registered for now but I'm not sure if that's the wisest idea on this statue.

For something that expensive, EMS for sure. SAL Registered is only going to insure your package for up to 6,000 yen, and if Robbie is that big, then shipping isn't going to be cheap anyway.

IIRC, you can always change which shipping option you want at AmiAmi (at least for monthly orders) after items come in stock and before you actually pay.

Last edited by a moderator:
Yah you can always change the shipping option.

But EMS eh?

I pre-ordered the blue robbie too on a proxy site however when I asked them if they had a rough ballpark for shipping they said they weren't sure but said I should pick 'postal parcel' due to the height of the statue.

>_> Not sure what that is.

I don't recommend SAL parcel. It's only barely cheaper than EMS and not as good. If an item is too large to fit in SAL small packet, then go with EMS.

For me, I always go with SAL small packet (SSP) whenever possible. If the order is under 7000 yen I use SSP unregistered, otherwise I pay the extra 410 yen for SSP registered. I only use EMS if either an item is too large and/or heavy to fit in SSP (like Godoka), or if I have multiple large and expensive items that would each require SSP registered if the order is split.

I often have multiple items in a single order that combined are too big to fit into a SSP box. In that case, I request the order to be split into separate SSP shipments. It's usually at least 1000 yen cheaper for 2-3 SSP unregistered shipments than a single EMS shipment. I don't mind waiting 2 weeks for SSP vs 2 days for EMS if I can save money (which can be used for more figures ^^).

Yeah, SAL Parcel isn't worth it, unless you live outside the US and want to avoid customs fees.

Anyway, figures. Alter's Zelos is up for preorder (7,490 at Ami, etc. etc.). What. A. Cutie.

By the way, Mio Boutique is awesome for proxy ordering. They only ask for 5% commission plus a $3 fee or something along those lines. I have the Blue Robbie the Rabbit variant pre-ordered. It's costing me $133 + shipping.

Not bad at all. I've heard nothing but good things about them.

Figma Link re-rel is coming October 28, same as Figma Samus re-rel. Nendoroid Isabelle (Shizue) will also release on the 28th.

Has anyone been following that Eren figma crap from AoT?

Absolutely ridiculous, selling out so quickly on AmiAmi.

Pre-ordered for $58 shipped on crunchyroll, must be nuts yo.

That's an alright price including shipping. The cheapest Eren Japanese store pre-order was a little over 4000 yen, so including shipping he would be ~$52.

I pre-ordered Mikasa from Big in Japan for the first release and they emailed me (and a lot of other MFC users) that my order was bumped to the second batch (January -> April) due to stock restraints. No other Japanese store pulled this crap. From now on I will only be using BiJ for prizes and exclusives.

I was able to get Eren pre-order in at AmiAmi. Figma Levi is going to be crazy.

Yah so I lost about 5 bucks. At least he's pre ordered and not depending on HLJ.

I want to make sure I get Levi. he's my favorite... I'll have to figure out how to set notifications on mfc later on

Wow, everything on that site is so ridiculously overpriced. Talk about taking advantage of and ripping off the fans of those series...
From what I quickly gathered from the site, they are resin casts and hand painted. this is different from the PVC machine paint figures you normally get. Resin cast is pretty awesome and hand painted details are generally vastly superior to the machine paint you see if figures.

I can't quite make sense of this Makers of Hi-End Collectible Figures from licenses such as the Legend of Zelda, Metroid and Sonic the Hedgehog. which seem to word it to give an impression that they have official license, but even recasts of figures handpainted can be quite expensive. One of the better known is YetiArt. http://stores.ebay.com/YetiYetiGK/FAQ.html awesome detail. this is an old post but show some of the process/detail http://www.figure.fm/en/post/29164/Kasumi+design+project+by+hand+painting+details.html

Anyway, there is a whole world of GK which is way cooler than just pvc figures one can buy from amiami and prices really go up.

I don't mean to double bump (can't seem to figure how to edit on mobile browser)

but how many of you open your figma figures? Lately I've been thinking about opening them... they would look cooler displayed but value wise... them again I have no plans of selling them.

Just like games, I open what I want/feel like at the moment but otherwise, they remain sealed until I am in the mood. If I want to really keep something sealed, I buy double.

Why are you going to buy the figure in the first place if your going to keep it sealed? Kind of stupid in my opinion.

Once, i get my samus figma i'm placing her on my gaming shelf.

I know it's a preference kinda thing, but I'll always open and pose every figure or statue that I buy. I won't ever criticize anyone for doing it, but paying to keep something boxed has just never made sense to me--outside of keeping it safe and hoping to turn a future profit, of course.

I like to open mine as well. I have plenty unopened at the moment but only because I don't have display space for them all. I haven't even opened Figma Pit yet due to space >_>

I did order a second Figma Link and Samus to keep in box. This is the first time I will have an extra of a figure. These two are just so well done that I wanted to make sure I always have a spare in case an original is damaged.

There are plenty of people who like to display figures in box. It's wise to open these figures and let them air for a day every few months because the material they use gives off a gas that can damage them over time.

I dunno. I guess it's because most typical figures should be left alone and sealed, just for collector's sake. But figmas may be different...I dunno yet.

Figma Link and Samus re-releases are now available. Samus is still available at most sites (-update- going oos fast), but Link almost completely sold out during pre-order. If you are interested in purchasing either of these from a Japanese store, I recommend ordering asap. Check op for in stock links.

Nendoroid Isabelle (Shizue) was also released. She is sold out at most places but still available at HLJ for 3166 JPY (~$34): http://www.hlj.com/product/GSC44319/ (-update- oos)

She looks great but dat price! I'm cutting back next year so will probably have to pass on her at this price.

Another Monster Hunter Nendoroid was announced.

Since thereis a  Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere PSP game, this count :)

Just received it from dv8 after a preorder period of nearly 2 years.

Finally have my D-arts Sigma and Ultimate Armor X pile of loot shipping from BBTS. No reason to doubt the quality, considering the rest of their line, but I'll report back.

So I'm kinda new to buying figures, where is a good place to get the Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker Play Arts figures? Ebay prices are quite pricey.

Unfortunately, a lot of those guys are out of print. They might be floating around in some shops for reasonable prices, or you might be able to find 'em used, but I don't see Solid Snake or Gray Fox coming back down in price anytime soon. Unless of course there's a reprint.

I'm specifically looking for the Peace Walker ones which I've seen for around $50 for awhile but most online places are out of stock or just have Miller which I already have.

The MGS Peace Walker PAK actually come up fairly often on Mandarake, and they are very reasonably priced compared to the non-PW MGS ones like MGR Raiden or Gray Fox. Of course, they are a second-hand shop but virtually everything I've ordered from them has been pretty much indistinguishable from new.

Thank you I'll check it out;

Don't thank me yet, I think my info may have been a little out of date! I can see a few now that have sold recently but they were all around 7000 yen. However, if you check several times a day, you can still get lucky. The best way to find them is to search プレイアーツ改 but "Play Arts" in english can get a few results too - the Peace Walker ones really stand out due to their yellow packaging.

Kinda crazy how the prices of these things can explode - I bought an original Solid Snake off Mandarake for 4000 jpy last August, now they're selling for 15,000. Kinda wish I'd grabbed more of them, but I was poor then and I'm a little poorer now!
