Japanese Video Game Figure Thread

This thread is dedicated to Japanese produced video game figures. In the past, Japanese figures were mostly used for manga and anime characters, but lately they have started making figures from video game franchises. This is more of an awareness announcement than a deal thread since figures can easily sell out long before they are available and the second hand market can be crazy expensive. Pre-ordering is usually the cheapest way to get a popular figure.

Released Figures:

To give you an idea of what Japanese figures look like, the following are some that have been released over the years:

About Japanese Figures:

Scale figures, like Zero Suit Samus, are statues made of ABS and PVC. Scale are bigger than Figma, more detailed, and again for display rather than play. Scale figures are not posable and may not come with accessories or alternate facial expressions.

Figma is like an action figure but higher quality. Figma are very posable and come with accessories, alternate faces, and alternate hands to recreate poses from the source material (as well as make up your own scenarios). Check out all the different display poses they show off in pics. While they are designed with posability in mind, these are still meant for display rather than play. These aren't like action figures you would give a kid. Many Figma parts are compatible with other Figmas, allowing you to create interesting combinations of outfits and expressions.

Nendoroid are cutesy interpretations of characters. Each is about 4" tall and, like Figma, usually comes with various faces/hands/accessories to reproduce poses/scenes from the source material. Also like Figma, many Nendo parts are compatible with other Nendos. Faces, hair, hands, and outfits can often be swapped between characters.

Real Action Heroes (RAH) are like a blend of scale figure, Figma, and doll. They are still made of ABS and PVC, but the clothes are made of fabric, giving them a more realistic look. RAH are posable like Figma and typically include accessories and alternate faces. They are bigger than your average scale figure and very high quality. Accordingly, they are also exceedingly expensive.

Shipping:

Don't forget about shipping cost. SAL small packet registered should cost $10-20 and takes about 2-3 weeks to reach me in Florida. SAL may also be available unregistered for 410 JPY less, but you lose tracking and insurance (so if your package goes missing, you are sol). EMS is the best shipping and only takes about 2 days to arrive but is considerably more expensive. There is also SAL Parcel, but it is worth spending a little extra for EMS. You may have to use EMS if your item is too big to fit in a SAL box. I always use SAL registered when I can. If you pre-order multiple figures, you can combine shipping if they come out in the same month (assuming no delays) and save some money.

Shipping cost is based on weight. If you are ordering multiple figures at once, it is cheaper to request two SAL shipments than one EMS. It is also cheaper to combine items than do separate shipments for each. From my experience, 3-4 Nendoroid/Figma will fit in a single SAL box. A scale figure may fit with 1-2 Nendoroid/Figma boxes, depending on the scale and size of figure box used. Some figures come in larger boxes than expected. There is no way to know how large/heavy your figure will be before ordering. Some stores may offer an estimate at time of order or indicate that an item should be compatible with SAL.

SAL unregistered (no tracking or insurance) does not require a signature upon delivery. All other shipping methods do, so try to be home on delivery day. If you miss the delivery, you can stop by your local post office for pickup starting the next day.

Payment:

For most Japanese shops, you don't pay until the figure(s) is ready to ship. The exceptions are some limited edition items (which you'll have to pay for in full at time of purchase, including shipping) and certain stores that require a % deposit. Payment is best done through PayPal.

The current exchange rate can be viewed in PayPal -> Profile -> My Money -> Currencies (disclosure arrow of PayPal balance). The PP rate is always a little more expensive than the current rate since they charge a fee for the exchange (I believe 2.5%, the rate you see is already calculated with that fee). You can also opt to pay directly from your PP tied bank account or cc when checking out with PP.. You will have to check your bank and cc websites for their rate info, including whatever % fee they use for the exchange. Best case scenario would be to use a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees.

You will usually receive an invoice the day after an item is released. Shipping usually occurs the day after payment is sent, depending on the store.

Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

AmiAmi: http://www.amiami.com/
My favorite store. Among the best prices. Easily combine orders by month. Amazing pre-owned section. Shipping is usually a little more than other stores since they use lots of packing materials.

Hobby Link Japan: http://www.hlj.com/
My second favorite store. Usually a bit more expensive than the store listed here. In exchange for higher prices, you can cancel orders at any time. Private warehouse feature lets you hold items for up to 60 days to combine shipping, though you still pay for the figure at time of release. Excellent customer service.

Hobby Search: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/
Can combine orders of the same month but not as nicely as AmiAmi. Can cancel a pre-order within the first week of placing.

Big in Japan: http://biginjap.com/
Prices usually a little lower than the rest. Good selection of prize figures. Can pay for pre-orders upfront. Can combine orders by month if you send them a message through your order history page. Can act as proxy or forwarder. Not good at responding to emails, so I don't use them now as much as I used to.

Tokyo Otaku Mode: http://otakumode.com/
Charges in USD $, pay upfront at time of placing order. Regularly offers coupons and bonus point campaigns. Has a Premium membership that is well worth getting since it pays for itself ($15 for 3 months gives you $16.50 in points), 5% off everything, slightly cheaper shipping, and better coupons. You get $5 in points when you register your account, plus another $5 if you signup through a referral link (referrer also gets $5), making your first order $10 off. Excellent customer service.

Amazon Japan: https://www.amazon.co.jp/

Thanks to their Global program, many of their figures are now eligible to be shipped directly to your house rather than having to go through a proxy/forwarder. This is only available on figures fulfilled by Amazon, including those sold by third-party and fulfilled by Amazon. Not all Amazon fulfilled items are eligible for Global shipping. Shipping cost is very good (around RSAL cost) and very fast (3-6 days). Japanese consumption tax (8%) is removed from the advertised price at checkout.

Plamoya: http://www.plamoya.com
Check for sales, otherwise usually overpriced.

Secondhand Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

I buy a lot secondhand. The items are usually in great condition and, for most of my orders, have never been opened before. This lets me get figures I missed out on before I started collecting or couldn't budget at time of release.

AmiAmi Pre-owned: http://www.amiami.com/top/page/c/preowned.html
My favorite store for secondhand figures thanks to a daily updated selection, cheap shipping options, and combining pre-owned items with my pre-orders for that month. Items are rated by separate figure and box conditions. "A" condition means it looks brand new, "B" means there is some normal ware but should still be good, "C" or lower you should probably avoid (at least for figure condition, I personally don't care too much about secondhand box condition). Pricing is hit or miss, but usually good compared to other stores. Their selection is good and updated daily (except Sundays). Stock status is accurate when ordering.

Mandarake: http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shop/en/
Excellent source for secondhand figures. Mandarake is a web front for a collection of B&M hobby stores in Japan. Their selection is huge, pricing is great, and new items are added daily. Many of their secondhand items have never been opened. The condition is commonly something like "not opened/box damaged" which translates to it will look brand new when you get it :3 Each order can only be from a single store since it will be shipping from that one location. Because these are B&M stores, an item you ordered may sell out that same day in store (this has happened to me a few times). In that case, the item is removed from your order, or if your order is just one item, the order is cancelled. You can check boxes for "cancel order if this item is oos". You'll receive an email the following day with the items they were able to secure (hopefully everything in your order), the total including shipping, and a link to payment.

Suruga-ya: http://www.suruga-ya.jp/
Warning: Suruga-ya is in Japanese and requires a proxy or forwarder to get your items (see below for details).
Huge selection and low prices. Sales on items can randomly start at any time. Adding more items to your cart can give you a % discount. Stock system is accurate, at least from my experiences. As the website is only available in Japanese, use MFC to find the Japanese name of the character you are interested in so that you can perform a search.

Recommended US Shops:

Big Bad Toy Store (BBTS): http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/ (allows cancellations, no money down required on pre-orders, warehouse feature, $4 shipping)
Crunchyroll: http://www.crunchyroll.com/store/ (check for weekly deals, free shipping at $75)
Tokyo Otaku Mode (TOM): http://www.otakumode.com/ (I also count them as a US shop since some of their items are fulfilled by US warehouse, free shipping at $150)
Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/ (occasionally has some figures at good prices)

My Figure Collection:

MFC is an amazing (and free) community of figure collectors. It has info on all Japanese figures including release dates, pics, user ratings, reviews, etc. If you are interested in Japanese figure collecting, I highly recommend joining to keep track of your collection and follow the latest news on upcoming releases. Here's my MFC profile as an example: http://myfigurecollection.net/profile/Cantisama

CAG has an MFC club that you can join here: http://myfigurecollection.net/club/1219

Proxy and Forwarding:

There are two services when buying an item that cannot be shipped directly to your country, a proxy and a forwarder. A proxy is a business or person located in the host country (Japan in our case) that places an order on your behalf and then ships it to you.

With a forwarder, you are the one who places the order. You set the shipping address to that of the forwarder who is located in the host country. The forwarder then ships the package to you upon receipt.

Forwarding is typically cheaper than using a proxy since a proxy will charge a % fee based on order total that includes the cost of the item(s). Since with forwarding you are the one paying for the items directly, any % fee is only applied to the cost of shipping + a small forwarding fee. Using a proxy can be easier though since you don't have to place the order yourself on a website that may be only available in a foreign language.

There are many proxy and forwarding service providers. For Nendo Red from Amazon.co.jp, I used Big in Japan as a forwarder and the transaction went perfectly. Fees were also very reasonable.

Hooray for that flattened-out exchange rate. It looks like I just bought HLJ's last Pit Figma; now listed as discontinued. I was initially worried that someone may have shopping cart-sniped it from me since it was became listed as discontinued in my order status while it was still being processed.

Shizue (Isabelle) Nendoroid (October 2013):
Mr7WyAS.jpg

Shizue Nendoroid from AmiAmi (2790 JPY, ~$28.18): http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=FIG-MOE-9524

Shizue (Isabelle) is your secretary in 3DS Animal Crossing: New Leaf. I'm a big fan of AC so this figure is appealing to me (especially with those emotion accessories). I'll wait until playing the game in June before deciding to place a preorder. I would be interested in other AC Nendoroids like boy and girl figures you can customize (w/ blank face for stickers like a few other Nendoroids have included), KK Slider, and some other popular AC residents.

Ordered these from JUNGLE:

http://myfigurecollection.net/item/172 - B Grade

http://myfigurecollection.net/item/2720 - A Grade

Now there's only one more Figma (currently) that I HAVE to get.

This is my first time ordering a B grade from them, hopefully it's in satisfactory condition.

EDIT: Just seen this. Figma KAITO now available for pre-order.

I'll be passing on this one as I'm not interested in. I am however very much looking forward to the new Miku figma.

I can't wait to see the Figma of the 2013 version.
That kind of got me interested... enough to add both Pit to my cart... hoping it go oos while I think about it :)
Be aware Dark Pit is simply a repaint of Pit. Same faces and everything. Only difference is Dark Pit comes with a staff while Pit comes with Monoeye (with stand and movable eye) and arrow + arm rings. I would only get both if you really love Kid Icarus.

Seen these pics on another forum, thought they were pretty cool.

P1010600.jpg

link-dungeon.jpg

If I had a better camera I'd try doing more action scenes like these.

I love the set piece, though Link just looks kinda awkward in the first pic without his shield.

I really want to do a Smash Bros scene (not sure how I'll accomplish that) but it would be nice to have a good forth character to go with Link, Samus and (when they come in) one of the two Pits. I wonder who Max Factory will make next... Mario characters are probably a bit too deformed to get right. I think Ganondorf or someone from Fire Emblem would be cool.

I never thought of that, that's a cool idea!

They're making a Marth Figma.

That's sweet... but is the Awakening design the one they're doing? I'd rather they use the original FE designs, like they used for Brawl.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure that's the only reason most people are getting these Nintendo figmas... Smash Bros scenes.:p

build the set, use tripod. take pic of the set with no characters, take pic of set wtih characters, use the empty set to cover up the figma stands.

Haha, honestly it hadn't even occurred to me. I just love the franchises. Nice call though :)

I am so, thoroughly, ALL OVER that Marth figma.

Also, dunno how into ThreeA figs you guys are, but their Atlas and P-Body pieces are apparently going up for preorder on the 25th. I have their REX and he's glorious. I'm definitely adding those two to the ranks.

Oh, I'm still getting Marth... it'll look badass in a Smash Bros set up.

EDIT* Both Pits came in today... now I really wish I hadn't gotten Dark Pit. Oh well.

My pacing around oogling at all the awesome "figmas" and "scale figures" (now that I know what to call them.)

Before finding this amazing thread (Kudos to the OP, I was looking for those exact type of sites for ages now) in my most visited forums; CAG.

I was looking to get my hands dirty with finally trying them at painting resin model kits, I found a ton of cheap ones on eBay and would love to buy a cheap one as a starter.
BUT! I have no clue where to start; how to paint these pretties.

Anyone know a great community or guide somewhere that teaches you how to paint resin figures? Like a How to work with Resin figurines?

I heard about them being shipped sometimes with faults here and there that can be easily fixed, having to "epoxy" the parts together, attaching legs and arms and making the joints seamless...all this just makes my head spiral.
I found a few guides that teach you about MAKING resin figures and how to paint those army men miniatures, but Im looking for a good guide that helps in prepping and painting anime/character resin figures.
Most of my results come up misguided because I'm not quiet sure what search term to use.

So if anyone could be so kind to point me in the right direction, I'd love to get started asap, especially since I live close to a Hobby Shop, especially here in Canada, Hobby shops where I live are so scarce. I would like to know what types of paints and colours make good skin tones so that I can see if this hobby shop near me carries said paints; if not I may need to turn to online retailers...

(sorry for the giant post, 1:30am, back from work, had a ton of time thinking of my post =P, found the thread minutes before I had to rush off to work)

There are many guides around the net and I haven't kept up with many of them but usually it is always a mixture of various techniques to find one that suits you the best.

anyway,

http://codyscoop.com/howto.html
http://majorwilliams.blogspot.com/2010/12/gundam-building-101-how-to-build-resin.html

resin kits for anime characters are generally much easier to do (once you have skin tone down.) and many offer eye decal. I purchase most of my resin kit from https://www.e2046.com/ because they usually have higher quality recast... unlike Thai recasts (ebay) which are usually pretty crappy... however, be aware that these, and almost ALL kits on ebay etc are recast. (ie, they buy licensed GK garage kit at various fest in JP, make cast and fill in resin, bootleg, counterfeit , whatever you want to call it.... some are totally against it... but officially licensed ktis are very very hard to find and expensive. their forum also have how to and galleries for when you need some inspiration :).

paint is a whole new science... people use different base for various effects... I mostly use acrylic but employe enamel/lacquer paint for various uses...(reverse wash etc, you will learn all that stuff soon) Paintbrush will obviously do and get you rolling cheap, but definitely try to get a airbrush/compressor if you can. can go with cheap one off ebay. , I did. but I soon got tired of it and went pretty high end with this iwata compressor and airbrushes, totally worth it for me.

You sir are epic.
Now I've got some very interesting reading ahead of me.
I would go the air-brush route but I don't want to suddenly throw in huge investments for a hobby the I can only satisfy on weekends. Unless and only if i can find a very cheap and compact airbrush station.

FigInStock alerted me to Revoltech Snake being available again at AmiAmi. Looks like I got their only one since he is now oos again. Great (and free) site if you want to track a figure's stock status automatically: http://www.figinstock.com/

Please share your progress. Model kits look amazing but are way out of my league (especially for painting, my shaky hands would be terrible :p). Misato from wasabi's first link is perfection: http://codyscoop.com/models/figures/newline-misato

If anything I'll most likely add it to my random-time-to-talk blog =P
but so far ordered some cheap figures, I want to start getting skin right..so I rather not link which ones I got ;D
I'm in school for 3D Animation & Design (game dev route ;) )
and we recently had a lot of nude painting classes at the beginning with acrylic paints, and it was real fun, I hope the experience transfers over to painting figures, but I plan to use airbrushes instead, they look prettier, and seem more accustomed to be used with figures.

That hobby shop I mentioned, has ALL the paints mentioned in the guides posted by wasabi =D so this is awesome the store is a 10min drive away, I wont need to worry about having to wait for shipping, like I did for when I water-cooled my 360(blog day 1) =P took me 2 months for a week long project.

I still need to sort out a work space/station... heh.
Long back when I was spray-can painting my old Gundam Deathscythe I messed up and stained the carpeting in my room... lol I put paper down but I never noticed that I got some paint on the carpet till I was down spraying.

That Misato looks beautiful, I love the shine off her coat and clothes.
Cant seem to find a good looking unpainted figure of her =(
Misato and Ayanami Rei and my fav characters from NGE, and Gendo Ikari, I want his sitting pose...where he's got his arms crossed in front of his face, like when he's scheming, very amazing powerful pose.

I use this with additional newspaper etc around the area.

and if you ever get serious with air brushing/compressor, this is what I use

http://www.amazon.com/Iwata-Medea-Studio-Series-Double-Compressor/dp/B000TLSYB2
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BQKFAI/

both excellent.

when I first started, I used this with a cheap $40 air brush. htey were serviceable and of course a lot of good ones in between these price range.
http://www.tcpglobal.com/airbrushdepot/compress.aspx#abd_tc60

Either case, I found that they are all much better than spray can, much better control and of course, your own color mix/consistency.

This is probably the coolest "station" for my obseesion of figures... I am definitely going to be getting this... only $80 too.
Are they all called "Spray Booths" ?

Looking at all the prices really increases the time its going to take me to BEGIN painting...
I have about 2-3 weeks before the figures arrive, so thats about ~1-2 paychecks (paid bi-weekly )=)
This is going to take some time.

I assume starting off with the "basics" will be key.
To get a proper air-brush station going, I would need the Compressor plus a gun right?
I definitely wont be getting the Iwata off the bat, too expensive for my budget.
I read that 20-30PSI is the max for figure air-brushing, I've never used a compressor before, only seen them, off. So I have no clue how loud they are, is there something to look out for if I want the quietest possible compressors?

And for the air-gun, does it take specially designed canister of paint or is a sort of standard used with acrylic and enamel paint jar mouths?
Just something that makes my head turn like a confused dog's.
So far I'm eyeing that booth you mentioned and this
http://www.tcpglobal.com/airbrushdepot/9169.aspx

i have no personal experience with that kit or the style, but from all my research people usually recommend against single action syphoning air brush.

double action because you have control over air and paint. you will actually use it alot to just have air flow and no paint.

gravity probably will be easier to manuever a we are painting figures. siphoning will probably best suited if you are doiung murals/car fenders.

something like this http://www.tcpglobal.com/airbrushdepot/abdkitG22.aspx will probably suit you better in the long run and is only $20 more.

but you can always start with some paint and brushes from local shop. for smaller figures, it actually won't be that bad. plus, y ou are just learning (skin tone mix).

hmm, i think that may be the kit I initially purchase. the g22 I think is a clone of a iwata airbrush... dunno, need to read more and search my mail for old orders...

edit: oh I had the G23 airbrush.

Here is the spray booth in action... that's MG gunpla in there so you get an idea of the size.

sword_impulse3.jpg~original
think I was just doing top coat or something.... the filter looks all new... dunno, old pic i dug out.

it does get expensive, you won't believe how much I have spent on supplies. but you can also do it very cheaply if you want. all the air brush etc are just extra, I've seen very awesome work on resin figures with ppl just using brushes.

for kicks, try google "spray booth gundam" and select images and see what ppl use :) they build all kind of contraption :)

for compressor, here is what I picked up during the research/use

you want to end up with a compressor with tank. reason for it is consistent air pressure.
With tankless, as the motor spin and it tries to maintain the air pressure, the air pressure actually fluctuate as motor spin up/down which cause inconsistency.

of course, with figure/gunpla, you don't have it on for a long time, so to get pass it, you point the airbrush away and then bring it onto the piece you are working with, avoiding the initial burst and the tail off. I got lazy so I went to buy the iwata compressor... but not like you can'pt do it with something cheaper.

other than all the technical stuff, then it is just reliability. My first compressor died like really quick, i did buy it off tcp global as one of their air brush/compressor package. they replaced it right away and did not require me to send back the old compressor. that replaced unit has been working since as my clean unit... it is by my sink so I dicsconnect airbrush, bring the brush over and use this compressor to clean... I haven't done much with building any figure for a while after a move so hopefully it is still alive :)

no, in that pic or others, they are probably using one of those paint helper thing which has arms with aligator clips. let me find them real quick.

well can't find the one I am t hinking of, but here is something similar tho i don't know if they bends.

http://www.amazon.com/Airbrush-Hobby-Model-Part-Holder/dp/B004KNHGP0

dunno if they are pratical tho... much better imo to hold the part while you paint it.

I use sticks, buy alligator clips, and stick them into styrofoam to dry like this.

oh duh, in this pic I use putty to hold the pieces... I have a ton, some are with alligator clicps .
edit: blu tack. I have a ton of it for some other use and they are very nice to hold atleast gunpla pieces to the skewer.

Blue tack, hmm wouldnt have thought it would hold the pieces.

I'm just scared of alligator clips, I'd assume they poke holes and scratch up your model piece, no?

Keep hearing "putty" and my mind wanders to plumbers putty, used to seal leaks, very used to the stuff... what exactly do we call the putty to fix up air bubble holes or defects in kits? sorry very dumb when it comes to new things.

i use tamiya epoxy putty and/or mr surfacer primer depending on how big the job. for minor air bubble holes etc, mr surfacer will do.

there is also a mr surfacer primer for resin, tho I haven't use that b4.

and for all I know, I probably use the terms wrong too :) anything shapeable is putty to me :)

yup, that's how you do it.

gunpla are gundam plastic model kit, the HG/RG/MG/PG etc . Bandai do have officially licensed Gundam resin kit released under the name of B-Club. Other resin kits (gundam/anime) are what they call garage kit from various people that are sold at various festival like wonderfest in japan where they receive temp license for the kit which makes it hard for people not in JP to get their hands on.
FigInStock alerted me to Revoltech Snake being available again at AmiAmi.
I finally had BBTS ship mine from the loot pile now that Revoltech Vic Viper is out too. Hopefully they both arrive soon. Stoked to see em.

You'll get him first then since my order is waiting for another May figure (non-game) and then will take another 20 some days for SAL. From MFC user pics, Snake's face looks better than the prototype, and his poses are awesome!

I didn't recognize the name Vic Viper, but when I brought up the MFC page I could immediately tell it was Zone of the Enders.

Revoltech Vic Viper (May 2013):

Revoltech Vic Viper from AmiAmi (3050 JPY, ~$30): http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=TOY-RBT-3123
Revoltech Vic Viper from BBTS ($45): http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=KAI10476&mode=retail

I haven't played ZOE in ages. The only name I remember is Jehuty.

Just saw their Jehuty figma .... *drools*
But I want to find an unpainted figure.... >=D
the Revoltech Jehuty looks a bit too shiny, the game ( I have the ZOE HD Collection, played recently) is more cell-shaded based, the mechs look too shiny IMO.
I know its supposed to follow metal shines... but but but D=

Link and Samus are being re-released in Japan as well! This is great news since they will come out sooner (Sept vs Nov) and be cheaper ($30 vs $50, $62 vs $100) than the US re-releases. Check op for links.

I'm debating getting seconds of Link and Samus Figmas. I've never bought two of the same figure before, but these are so amazing and I plan on using the ones already opened for pics.

On a sad note, Otacute has announced they will be closing later this year (around October is their current estimate). They will stop accepting pre-orders at the end of May. I've used them a few times and enjoyed their service.

-Edit- Ordered 2nd copies of Figma Link and Samus to keep misb.

Ya know I think I might pick up Link and Samus this time around, not really sure why I passed on them in the first place to be honest, procrastination probably. Same reason I never got Skyward Sword, hope to get it eventually... And then procrastinate playing it ;).

Yeah that sucks about Otacute, only known about them recently but it's always terrible when online stores go out of business.

Trust me, they look fantastic. I've got Jehuty, Naked Jehuty, Ardet, Anubis, and Vector Cannon Jehuty on display and they're glorious. If you want something that's more of a matte finish though, you might want to check out the Kotobukiya model kits. They made two Jehutys and a Vic Viper. Slightly larger and not as glossy of a finish.

Edit: Finally went ahead and myself an MFC account. Is the site cool about adding stuff? I've got a bunch of NECA, GamingHeads, and other brands that aren't represented, but I'm not sure if they're trying to stay Japan-centric. http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ActionKazimer

Double edit: Nevermind. Looks like they strive for Japanese only in their guidelines. That kinds sucks.

Hey guys, I'm looking for any authentic One Piece or Death Note chibi figures/Nendoroids for my girlfriend's birthday in about a month, but I'm on a budget. Any sort of kawaii/chibi figures from popular anime would be okay (we watch a lot of anime) but ones from those series would be better. I'd personally like them to be authentic, but I also don't have a lot of money. Where should I look for authentic ones at a reasonable price? (she also loves Sonic)

I looked for Death Note Nendoroids on ebay and found GSC Chinese counterfeits at 11 for $18. I don't imagine the quality is very good. Can anyone comment on those? =\

Back when I started collecting, I actually got a couple counterfeit Death Note Nendoroids. They were so bad of quality that I knew (even being a newbie collector) that they were fake. They reeked, had a terrible paint job and all of the joints were glued together. While some counterfeits may not be as bad of quality, do yourself and your GF a favor and splurge on the real thing.

Here are a few places you can check that I've personally used myself or that I always hear good things about:

Agreed. I also bought fakes when I first started collecting and wish I had known beforehand. Even at cheap prices they are not worth it (and I hate supporting b*stard counterfeiters).

Thanks for the warnings about getting counterfeits, guys! I will stay clear of them as much as I can. Sucks that the official things are so expensive though.

My gf would absolutely LOVE that Saber-Lion set...I'll have to see what I can save up since it seems pricey wherever I look. Of course I'm paying for dinner, movie, mini-golf and whatever else we do for her b-day.

Thanks for these links! I checked out Mandarake and found some inexpensive One Piece World Collection Figures. It says "box damage/case damage" on the cheaper ones, which means that only the box is ruined right? Does your order have to be approved for them to send you the items? I went through a mock order for four figures, shipping showed as free and handling was $5. Is that accurate for the site? It's all so foreign to me... ;)

Saber Lion is pure win. She was re-released at the end of last year so she's way cheaper than she used to be. You can order her new from AmiAmi for 2250 JPY (~$23, + another ~$10 for SAL Registered shipping): http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=FIG-MOE-0120

They always say "box damaged", but of the many I've bought, they've all come mint. Unless they state additional details like box window broken, you probably won't notice they are secondhand. Here's how Mandarake works (from op):
Mandarake: http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shop/en/
My favorite source for secondhand figures. Mandarake is a web front for a collection of B&M hobby stores in Japan. Their selection is huge, pricing is great, and new items are added daily. Many of their secondhand items have never been opened. The condition is commonly something like "not opened/box damaged" which translates to it will look brand new when you get it :3 Note that there is a 500 yen fee for orders under 5000 yen, so I only ever place an order when I have 5000 yen worth of items to buy. This fee, along with shipping, is calculated per store, so you want all your items in an order to come from the same store. Also note that because these are B&M stores, an item you ordered may sell out that same day in store (this has happened to me a few times). In that case, the item is removed from your order, or if your order is just one item, the order is cancelled. If you are worried about not breaking the 5000 yen barrier in the case an item is oos, make sure to check the boxes for "cancel order if this item is oos" on all items in your order. You'll receive an email the following day with the items they were able to secure (hopefully everything in your order), the total including shipping, and a link to payment.

ANyone have any guess as to the cost of sal registered shipping on Both Link and Samus?

I already have a preorder with BBTS, but if AmiAmi is substantially cheaper, I'd rather go that route. From the OP, it seems like it would probably more advantageous, but any assistance would he appreciated.

^Not sure, haven't bought anything from Japan in almost a year, but Ami's price for the figures is almost $20 less EACH than BBTS so their shipping would have to be pretty outrageous for it to not be a better deal.
