Japanese Video Game Figure Thread

This thread is dedicated to Japanese produced video game figures. In the past, Japanese figures were mostly used for manga and anime characters, but lately they have started making figures from video game franchises. This is more of an awareness announcement than a deal thread since figures can easily sell out long before they are available and the second hand market can be crazy expensive. Pre-ordering is usually the cheapest way to get a popular figure.

Released Figures:

To give you an idea of what Japanese figures look like, the following are some that have been released over the years:

About Japanese Figures:

Scale figures, like Zero Suit Samus, are statues made of ABS and PVC. Scale are bigger than Figma, more detailed, and again for display rather than play. Scale figures are not posable and may not come with accessories or alternate facial expressions.

Figma is like an action figure but higher quality. Figma are very posable and come with accessories, alternate faces, and alternate hands to recreate poses from the source material (as well as make up your own scenarios). Check out all the different display poses they show off in pics. While they are designed with posability in mind, these are still meant for display rather than play. These aren't like action figures you would give a kid. Many Figma parts are compatible with other Figmas, allowing you to create interesting combinations of outfits and expressions.

Nendoroid are cutesy interpretations of characters. Each is about 4" tall and, like Figma, usually comes with various faces/hands/accessories to reproduce poses/scenes from the source material. Also like Figma, many Nendo parts are compatible with other Nendos. Faces, hair, hands, and outfits can often be swapped between characters.

Real Action Heroes (RAH) are like a blend of scale figure, Figma, and doll. They are still made of ABS and PVC, but the clothes are made of fabric, giving them a more realistic look. RAH are posable like Figma and typically include accessories and alternate faces. They are bigger than your average scale figure and very high quality. Accordingly, they are also exceedingly expensive.

Shipping:

Don't forget about shipping cost. SAL small packet registered should cost $10-20 and takes about 2-3 weeks to reach me in Florida. SAL may also be available unregistered for 410 JPY less, but you lose tracking and insurance (so if your package goes missing, you are sol). EMS is the best shipping and only takes about 2 days to arrive but is considerably more expensive. There is also SAL Parcel, but it is worth spending a little extra for EMS. You may have to use EMS if your item is too big to fit in a SAL box. I always use SAL registered when I can. If you pre-order multiple figures, you can combine shipping if they come out in the same month (assuming no delays) and save some money.

Shipping cost is based on weight. If you are ordering multiple figures at once, it is cheaper to request two SAL shipments than one EMS. It is also cheaper to combine items than do separate shipments for each. From my experience, 3-4 Nendoroid/Figma will fit in a single SAL box. A scale figure may fit with 1-2 Nendoroid/Figma boxes, depending on the scale and size of figure box used. Some figures come in larger boxes than expected. There is no way to know how large/heavy your figure will be before ordering. Some stores may offer an estimate at time of order or indicate that an item should be compatible with SAL.

SAL unregistered (no tracking or insurance) does not require a signature upon delivery. All other shipping methods do, so try to be home on delivery day. If you miss the delivery, you can stop by your local post office for pickup starting the next day.

Payment:

For most Japanese shops, you don't pay until the figure(s) is ready to ship. The exceptions are some limited edition items (which you'll have to pay for in full at time of purchase, including shipping) and certain stores that require a % deposit. Payment is best done through PayPal.

The current exchange rate can be viewed in PayPal -> Profile -> My Money -> Currencies (disclosure arrow of PayPal balance). The PP rate is always a little more expensive than the current rate since they charge a fee for the exchange (I believe 2.5%, the rate you see is already calculated with that fee). You can also opt to pay directly from your PP tied bank account or cc when checking out with PP.. You will have to check your bank and cc websites for their rate info, including whatever % fee they use for the exchange. Best case scenario would be to use a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees.

You will usually receive an invoice the day after an item is released. Shipping usually occurs the day after payment is sent, depending on the store.

Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

AmiAmi: http://www.amiami.com/
My favorite store. Among the best prices. Easily combine orders by month. Amazing pre-owned section. Shipping is usually a little more than other stores since they use lots of packing materials.

Hobby Link Japan: http://www.hlj.com/
My second favorite store. Usually a bit more expensive than the store listed here. In exchange for higher prices, you can cancel orders at any time. Private warehouse feature lets you hold items for up to 60 days to combine shipping, though you still pay for the figure at time of release. Excellent customer service.

Hobby Search: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/
Can combine orders of the same month but not as nicely as AmiAmi. Can cancel a pre-order within the first week of placing.

Big in Japan: http://biginjap.com/
Prices usually a little lower than the rest. Good selection of prize figures. Can pay for pre-orders upfront. Can combine orders by month if you send them a message through your order history page. Can act as proxy or forwarder. Not good at responding to emails, so I don't use them now as much as I used to.

Tokyo Otaku Mode: http://otakumode.com/
Charges in USD $, pay upfront at time of placing order. Regularly offers coupons and bonus point campaigns. Has a Premium membership that is well worth getting since it pays for itself ($15 for 3 months gives you $16.50 in points), 5% off everything, slightly cheaper shipping, and better coupons. You get $5 in points when you register your account, plus another $5 if you signup through a referral link (referrer also gets $5), making your first order $10 off. Excellent customer service.

Amazon Japan: https://www.amazon.co.jp/

Thanks to their Global program, many of their figures are now eligible to be shipped directly to your house rather than having to go through a proxy/forwarder. This is only available on figures fulfilled by Amazon, including those sold by third-party and fulfilled by Amazon. Not all Amazon fulfilled items are eligible for Global shipping. Shipping cost is very good (around RSAL cost) and very fast (3-6 days). Japanese consumption tax (8%) is removed from the advertised price at checkout.

Plamoya: http://www.plamoya.com
Check for sales, otherwise usually overpriced.

Secondhand Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

I buy a lot secondhand. The items are usually in great condition and, for most of my orders, have never been opened before. This lets me get figures I missed out on before I started collecting or couldn't budget at time of release.

AmiAmi Pre-owned: http://www.amiami.com/top/page/c/preowned.html
My favorite store for secondhand figures thanks to a daily updated selection, cheap shipping options, and combining pre-owned items with my pre-orders for that month. Items are rated by separate figure and box conditions. "A" condition means it looks brand new, "B" means there is some normal ware but should still be good, "C" or lower you should probably avoid (at least for figure condition, I personally don't care too much about secondhand box condition). Pricing is hit or miss, but usually good compared to other stores. Their selection is good and updated daily (except Sundays). Stock status is accurate when ordering.

Mandarake: http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shop/en/
Excellent source for secondhand figures. Mandarake is a web front for a collection of B&M hobby stores in Japan. Their selection is huge, pricing is great, and new items are added daily. Many of their secondhand items have never been opened. The condition is commonly something like "not opened/box damaged" which translates to it will look brand new when you get it :3 Each order can only be from a single store since it will be shipping from that one location. Because these are B&M stores, an item you ordered may sell out that same day in store (this has happened to me a few times). In that case, the item is removed from your order, or if your order is just one item, the order is cancelled. You can check boxes for "cancel order if this item is oos". You'll receive an email the following day with the items they were able to secure (hopefully everything in your order), the total including shipping, and a link to payment.

Suruga-ya: http://www.suruga-ya.jp/
Warning: Suruga-ya is in Japanese and requires a proxy or forwarder to get your items (see below for details).
Huge selection and low prices. Sales on items can randomly start at any time. Adding more items to your cart can give you a % discount. Stock system is accurate, at least from my experiences. As the website is only available in Japanese, use MFC to find the Japanese name of the character you are interested in so that you can perform a search.

Recommended US Shops:

Big Bad Toy Store (BBTS): http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/ (allows cancellations, no money down required on pre-orders, warehouse feature, $4 shipping)
Crunchyroll: http://www.crunchyroll.com/store/ (check for weekly deals, free shipping at $75)
Tokyo Otaku Mode (TOM): http://www.otakumode.com/ (I also count them as a US shop since some of their items are fulfilled by US warehouse, free shipping at $150)
Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/ (occasionally has some figures at good prices)

My Figure Collection:

MFC is an amazing (and free) community of figure collectors. It has info on all Japanese figures including release dates, pics, user ratings, reviews, etc. If you are interested in Japanese figure collecting, I highly recommend joining to keep track of your collection and follow the latest news on upcoming releases. Here's my MFC profile as an example: http://myfigurecollection.net/profile/Cantisama

CAG has an MFC club that you can join here: http://myfigurecollection.net/club/1219

Proxy and Forwarding:

There are two services when buying an item that cannot be shipped directly to your country, a proxy and a forwarder. A proxy is a business or person located in the host country (Japan in our case) that places an order on your behalf and then ships it to you.

With a forwarder, you are the one who places the order. You set the shipping address to that of the forwarder who is located in the host country. The forwarder then ships the package to you upon receipt.

Forwarding is typically cheaper than using a proxy since a proxy will charge a % fee based on order total that includes the cost of the item(s). Since with forwarding you are the one paying for the items directly, any % fee is only applied to the cost of shipping + a small forwarding fee. Using a proxy can be easier though since you don't have to place the order yourself on a website that may be only available in a foreign language.

There are many proxy and forwarding service providers. For Nendo Red from Amazon.co.jp, I used Big in Japan as a forwarder and the transaction went perfectly. Fees were also very reasonable.

i went ahead and joined the cag group on mfg. i'm pretty new to whole collection thing, i'm only doing final fantasy/batman(i know it's not jap) figures, and mainly the play arts kai variety. wanted to say thanks for the thread, even though most of the things i'm looking for are sold out now, the links have been a pretty good resource.

After clearing up some shelf space, I was finally able to open Nendo Isabelle and Nendo Sonic. Neither of them really look like Nendoroids, ie cutesy chibi character interpretations. Isabelle looks like the older Animal Crossing art style prior to the long limbs of New Leaf, while Sonic looks exactly like he always does. This isn't a negative though as they both came out great.

Isabelle is as cute as she is in New Leaf. Even for a Nendoroid she isn't very posable. In the spirit of AC, Nendo Isabelle is more about expressions than arm/leg positioning. Her nonverbal expression accessories are prefect for figures. Oh, and the bell in her hair is real. As a long time AC fan, I am happy to have her and hope for more figures from the series (Nook or KK Slider next please).

I am not a big Sonic fan (grew up on Nintendo rather than Sega), but Nendo Sonic impresses. Especially his many accessories, including a ring, chaos emerald, item box with multiple interchangeable items, and a goal post! He would work well in a Smash Bros display.

Still have Figma Pit and Revoltech Raiden to unbox.

So i havent preordered figures in amazon yet but is choosing free shipping going to be a bad decision? Might preorder that mario sh figuarts.

I got a Disgaea figure I'd long wanted today, via a Tsuki seller: Kotobukiya's Flonne! Her skin's somewhat discolored from age (she was released in 2006), but otherwise, she looks great :D Sorry, no pics of my own right now...

Their packaging for figures is about as good as for any other product they sell: decent to crappy (note: I have Prime).

I've gotten some figures from them before, including preordered Figuarts. Their return policy is stellar, just like for other stuff (got a broken RAH once and they replaced it with no problems), but if you're anal about the condition of your figure boxes, best to stay on the safe side and order from a different shop.

hey, fun question for all of you guys here - have you  ever bought a figure of a character you know nothing about, you just bought it because its appealing to your eyes?

I try not to. One of my favorite aspects of displaying figures is looking around and bringing up memories of that series, so it makes sense to only collect characters I know. Looks alone though get me sometimes. In those cases I try to play/read/watch the character after ordering the figure.

On a side note, for anyone interested in figure photography, Target has been having some amazing camera clearances. Yesterday I picked up a Nikon D3100 w/ two lens for $250. That same bundle is at least $500 online. These clearance cameras can be hard to find in stock and are ymmv since each Target store has its own clearance timing. Check SD for details: http://slickdeals.net/f/6794648-compilation-of-known-target-b-m-camera-clearance-deals-march-17-2014-all-ymmv

Most of the time.

Edit: Ok, some of the time.
I did just that with this one. Also got the Nendroid one. Not to sound super lame but I looked up some info on her and found out we have the same birthday.

Don't trust Amazon's US pre-order release dates for Japanese figures... check with Anime-Island or BBTS instead. SHF Regular Goku should be April US release and SS Goku re-release is June US.

Ic. Was reading the thread and everyones mentioning about amiami. Theyre not local right? So are there prices good compared to amazons? Dont want to create an account yet.

I also want to get play arts kai metal gear 5 ground zeroes. Actually i preordered it in amazon too. 99.99 and said itll release in april. But others ate saying its releasing in may

AmiAmi is located in Japan. They are my favorite shop for figures. Their prices are usually better than Amazon, though after paying for overseas shipping vs Amazon's fsss/prime, the difference can be negligible. More importantly with AmiAmi you have a much bigger selection and figures are released at least a month before US retailers get them.

Japan release is May and US release is June.

which sites generally have the most accurate release dates? cause i've seen sites that list a figure for march, and then others that trickle down to june.

The manufacturers' sites. Barring that, Amazon.co.jp tends to be spot-on. Both are regular resources for Myfigurecollection.net database editors (go there if navigating Japanese-language sites is too intimidating).

Also, keep in mind that US and other overseas stores usually have later release dates than the Japanese shops for most figures due to shipping times, distribution setups, etc.

yeah, i was meaning more the us stores. square itself says march, another store says march, and then it goes down through the months til june. even a local store has june pegged for the release. was just curious if anyone had experiences when ordering from different sites for preorders.

If it's a Square Enix figure, then their main US distributor (IIRC) is Diamond Comics-- unfortunately, their site is really hard to navigate if you're looking for specific items' release dates. Notably, they take backorders for popular items months in advance, which may account for the June release dates you've been seeing.

thanks for the info, appreciate it. since my local shop is getting them in, i might just wait until it's been officially released. i'll save for the preordering stuff for when i'm more comfortable with using these sites, or pick a favorite.

A full year after pre-ordering, RAH Link has a release date, March 29. If interested it's cheaper to buy him now from AmiAmi at 15800 JPY (~$160 with today's PayPal rate) vs a US store like BBTS where he is $250.

http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=FIG-IPN-6204

-Update-

Payed this morning at AmiAmi. RAH Link is not eligible for SAL shipping due to box size restrictions. EMS shipping was 4000 JPY to US (other option was SAL Parcel for 3850 JPY, but it's easily worth the extra ~$1.50 to get EMS). Total with shipping was 19800 JPY (~$199 with PayPal conversion). I used all my AmiAmi points to bring him down to $185. This will be my first Real Action Hero, I hope he's worth the expense.

AmiAmi prices have increased to adjust for the Japanese tax hike from 5% to 8%. From AmiAmi:

Due to the tax rate change in Japan, we will be revising the product price for some items and how the discount rates are displayed at our store. In the past, the discount rate was displayed as a percentage off the suggested retail price not including sales tax. We will be changing the discount rate to be displayed as a percentage calculated using the retail price including sales tax. While our store’s discount rate may seem to have decreased recently, this is not the case and with this display revision, we believe it will be easier for our customers to understand how less expensive it is to purchase from our store compared to purchasing at retail price in Japan.

Please understand that there will be some products listed with the old display and some with the new as it will unfortunately take some time for us to change the display of all prices at our store. We apologize for the confusion and ask for your patience and understanding. Thank you for your support of AmiAmi.
As an example, RAH Link increased from 15800 to 16250 JPY, and his % off changed from 20% to 24%. The math on this is:

19800 msrp x 1.08 tax = 21384

1 - (16250 / 21384) = 24% off

On another note, it appears there is a change in the tunic material between RAH Link's prototype and final product:

The tunic material is now wooly and maybe a little thicker. From pics I like the look of prototype material better but will wait to see this in person before making judgments.

Overnight, AmiAmi and my proxy dealer requested $$$ for Robbie the Rabbit!!

I'm super excited. But shipping is so expensive!!! $40 for pink and after fees, $60 for Blue!!

I like that they actually look like their cartoon counterparts. Plus, the alternate heads are awesome. Hopefully they come to the US.

Received RAH Link today. He is huge! This is my first RAH so I wasn't clear how much bigger these are compared to Figma.

6U1R3xr.jpg

(pic from 4chan)

That tunic though. Apparently Nintendo made Medicom change the material and color to what they felt was more accurate to the character. The prototype tunic looked so much better by offering a darker green and flatter material. The new tunic looks like fleece. *sigh* Maybe someone will make custom tunic / hat replacements.

BBTS has RAH Link in stock now. Cheapest domestic shipping is $10, so you're looking at $260 shipped from BBTS vs $200 shipped from AmiAmi (well, a little more at AmiAmi now that the tax rate increased from 5% to 8%).

Cool. I was at TRU the other day and saw that the original 1988 US TMNT toys were re-released (with old style packaging). So much nostalgia.

Last edited by a moderator:
The original figures have been in TRU for about a year and a half now. Though for some reason they are only doing the initial line and the Patty Wagon.

Cool, but still Revoltechs. When they were the only game in town I used to love them, but at this point I only get them on deep clearance or if there's some unique figure I don't think will get made elsewhere (like the Zone of Enders side characters). Anyone feel differently? I'd love figma TMNTs, for instance.
Depends on the figures for me. I largely don't like their takes on humans, but I thought they knocked it out of the park with the ZoE line. Their recent Big Boss is quite good too.

First 4 Figures announced today a limited-edition figurine of Princess Zelda from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess that costs $350 USD.

Standing at 17 inches, the Zelda statue is at one-fourth scale and "cast in high-quality polystone and painted by hand."

Releasing in the fourth quarter of this year, only 2,500 copies of the Prince Zelda statue will be available worldwide and First 4 Figures is now taking pre-orders on its website. The figurine "comes in deluxe full-color packaging, hand-numbered base, and includes an authenticity card," according to the company.

Anybody know a site i can buy A Figma Kirito thats not ridiculously priced? Damn! Hes one of the most overly priced figures in the line.

Princess Zelda looks great but way too big. I would pick her up in 1/8 (preferably pvc).

I've been hunting him too. Cheapest he goes for is 8500 JPY. He sells in under a minute whenever he pops up, despite those high prices.

Luckily I picked up his Nendo at release time even though I had not watched SAO yet. I do have Figma Asuna and she is awesome!

I never bothered with nendoroids. They are cute but id rather have more poseability that figmas have. Ill probably wait for a reprint or something. They did it for link and samus (but theyre nintendo though). Just dont see myself forking triple the retail price.

I do hope when they do another kid icarus game that figma reprint pit too.

I probably should preorder hunter x hunter figures. Those look nice and i did watch that anime growing up. Hehe

I decided to sell RAH Link. Aside from the tunic material and color change, he is so big that I won't be able to take pics of him with any of my other figures (other than cradling Figma Link, lol). Figma Link came out great and I have lots of other Figma to pose him with. If I can find RAH Link later for cheaper, I will pick him up again.

It took me a while into figure collecting to learn the awesomeness that is Figma. Displays and pics are a lot more fun when the figure can pose. I do also enjoy Nendoroid for overwhelming cuteness. Wind Waker Link is going to be amazing as a Nendo.

I can't pay triple for Figma Kirito either. I did pay double for Figma Hachikuji the other day though ^^
