NPD's Anita Frasier:
The U.S. video games industry declined for the fifth consecutive month, bringing year-to-date sales to $8.16 billion, down 14% from the same time period last year.

In order for the industry to come in flat or slightly up for the total year, the back five months of the year have to come in 11% (or more) higher than the last five months of last year.

While year-to-date results are weak, there are some big titles set to be released over the next several months, including Madden this month, which should help spur sales. The worst comps should be behind us, and looking beyond August we have The Beatles: Rock Band, Halo 3: ODST, and of course, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to look forward to.

Hardware sales have slowed considerably on nearly every platform. The Xbox 360 is the only console system showing a unit sales increase year-to-date, while the NDS has the highest sales of all hardware platforms both for the month, and year-to-date.

NCAA Football 10 was the top selling game for the month, with combined sales of 689K units across all platforms.

Wii Sports Resort was the top-selling software SKU for the month with 508K units sold with a 2.5% attach rate to the hardware install base.

Of all genres, the music/dance genre has suffered the greatest declines this year, with nearly $390 million less revenues than the same time period last year.

And yet EA somehow managed to lose a quarter of a BILLION dollars last quarter. Maybe they'll have better luck in the 3 months ending September 30. I think this is the first time I've seen the top 10 owned entirely by 2 companies.

Old Nintendo games (3+ months in the Top 10):
- Wii Fit
- Mario Kart Wii
- Mario Kart DS
- New Super Mario Bros.
- Pokemon Platinum

Nintendo games: "Built to last"

They need to do something about their hardware, though. Maybe they need to cut the supply some.

So in comparison to their older brothers, 360 is slightly ahead of XBox 1, Wii is almost double what the Gamecube was, and the PS3 is less than 1/2 of what the PS2 was doing. Interesting.

good stats. thanks, dr mk.

recap.
last gen: ps2 king; gc ugly stepchild.
this gen: wii king; ps3 ugly & 'expensive' stepchild.

360 seems the most steady; but the ds sales are amazing and insane.

I guess UFC completely fell off the face of the earth this month after the surprising 2 month run it had in the top 10?

PS3 33 month mark is barely beating the Gamecubes 33 month mark. And the Cube was considered a retail failure.

And who the hell is buying all these DS/DSi's ?

So...who thinks that Sony pulls a Wii with the PS4 and keeps the same system but adds in more ram, a bit better graphics card and an internal scaler?

Lol, I think they'll change things around ab it, since developers constantly complain about developing for the Ps3. I'm sure they'd try to implement something more developer friendly.
This is such fiun to look at.

Interesting as there are all sorts of ways to spin this info.
Seeing how fans of certain consoles will spin these numbers to make their case is is the best part.

I heard that the Cell processor scales up nicely, so Sony would likely just add more Cells to the next Playstation. Any other changes would largely waste all the money gone into developing this architecture. Great news for developers that actually know how to develop for the PS3 but bullocks for those who don't (ex. Valve).

Being able to carry a similar architecture forward will significantly cut down on development costs for the new system and actual cost associated with producing the system since the guts are already on the market.

GC was a failure in the eyes of gamers, but Nintendo still made money off of the system. It wasn't a lot compared to Sony but they definitely turned a profit.

The PS3 will have to work harder to get in the black but it, like the 360, has additional revenue streams not available last gen (like DLC, Home, and Avatars). So while the 360 and PS3 may not sell as many units as the PS2 and Xbox combined, Sony and Microsoft could end up making more money overall if this generation lasts long enough.

Wow. Ownage by Wii Sports Resort. Curious how many of these were sold via the TRU deal (perhaps a silly question, but when I was in line, I saw 5 people ahead of me do the 25 dollar giftcard in five minutes alone)

This generation would have to last a good 10 to 15 years longer before either Microsoft or Sony break even for the generation. I dont think its going to happen.

Wow when did the Wii outsell the PS2 (proportionally)? If Sony released a Blu-Ray Playstation that played PS1-PS3 games and was it easy to develop for, they could have something successful. It would have to be cheap and profitable though.
So...who thinks that Sony pulls a Wii with the PS4 and keeps the same system but adds in more ram, a bit better graphics card and an internal scaler?
Probably better to just try to ride the PS3 for 7-10 years rather than take the cost of putting out a new system that people may not buy if it's such marginal improvements. The Wii had the new-ness of motion controls to get people to buy it and to get the non-gamer business.

I dunno. The sales are now "normal" for a console. Before they've been ungodly.

kinda curious on the break down on the DS numbers. How much is it people still buying the regular DS and how many people are buying the DSi

It's only when Nintendo is nice and releases the numbers, but most times they have it's been about 60/40-70/30 DSi/DS.

PS3 Slim can't come any quicker.

@Maklershed
Such a shame that Red Faction isn't up there.
I'll buy when it's $40. Heard they had 3 DLC planned so I compensate that within the pricetag, anyone else doing that now DLC is rampant?

Gamasutra has their 5 page analysis up, along with some charts:
The silver linings this month are very company-specific. For Microsoft, the year-to-date Xbox 360 hardware sales are still up over sales in 2008. Electronic Arts is in the midst of a very strong summer season, led by its sports franchises. Nintendo's evergreen titles continue to do well on the Nintendo DS and Wii. And we shouldn't forget that the Nintendo DSi has achieved an installed base of 2 million units injust over four months.

For each bright spot, however, there are some dark signs elsewhere. We'll look at the drop in third-party software sales for the Xbox 360 as well as the contraction in EA's NCAA Football franchise. And along with other pricing discussions, we'll examine whether the Nintendo DSi may well be in line for a price cut sometime this year as its sales have reached parity with the Nintendo DS Lite.

Interesting how the monthly revenue is being spread more evenly among the months as time passes. Maybe we're finally seeing a move to a release schedule that isn't concentrated solely in November and December.

LOL at the PS2 figures for NCAA10. Looks like the PS2 was squished under the weight of the PS3 and 360 sales.

It's been better this year than in the past (SF 4/Killzone 2 in Feb., RE5/Halo Wars in March, Infamous/UFC in May) but July was very dry in terms of new releases (NCAA and nothing else.) August will be dominated by Madden and the Nintendo junk, with a side of Batman. September will be all about Halo 3 ODST, October will have a mix of stuff, then Nov./Dec. will be all about CoD: MW2.

The interesting thing is going to be the first quarter of 2010 with so much stuff being delayed for then (MAG, Bioshock 2, etc.), and heavy hitters like Mass Effect 2, FF XIII, and God of War 3 were already planned for that time frame as well.

It's going to be a bumpy ride from Jan.-May 2010.
