NPD's Anita Frasier:
The video games industry realized a significant decline when compared to June 2008, the fourth consecutive month of year-over-year declines. The first half of the year has been tough largely due to comparisons against a stellar first half performance last year, but still, this level of decline is certainly going to cause some pain and reflection in the industry.

Because the question invariably arises, this month saw the greatest year-over-year monthly decline since September 2000 when the industry declined 41% .

Even with the industry down 12% year-to-date, with a strong back-half performance, full year sales could still be flat to slightly up to 2008's record-breaking performance. Of course, that could be put further at risk if more highly anticipated titles move out of 2009 into 2010 or later.

Our latest gamer segmentation study suggests that more than 4 million new 'players' have entered the games market since last year, so certainly the decline isn't due to less folks participating in the industry . Some of these are new retail consumers and some are playing online for free, and others are a mix of both. The trick is to continue to figure out how to monetize all the gaming that is going on across PC, mobile devices, and video game systems. Certainly there is plenty of opportunity in the industry, but the rate of change in many areas of the industry presents a lot of challenge as well .

This is one of the first months where I think the impact of the economy is clearly reflected in the sales numbers. While the aggregate of content may not be as strong as what we saw in the first half of last year, and while the consumer base willing to spend dollars on hardware at the current price points may be thinning, the size of the decliine could also point to consumers deferring limited discretionary spending until a big event (must-have new title, hardware price cut) compels them to spend.

The Xbox 360 is the only platform to have realized a unit sales increase over last June. YTD, both the 360 and NDS have generated an increase in unit sales. Although many track month-to-month sales changes, comparisons to May must take into account that June is a five-week reporting month while May spanned four weeks.

While Wii sales are down from last year, the platform is still realizing very strong sales month after month. Compared against historical performance of other systems this far into the console lifecycle, the unit sales performance is still strong.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2010 had a great debut at retail, nearly doubling the units sold in the first month at market of the previous best-two launches: PGA Tour '05 and '07, which sold 272K units each in their respective launch months . No doubt a combination of moving the release date of the game out of "Madden Month" into June where golf was heavily televised due to the U.S. Open as well as well-received new game features and attributes helped contribute to this success.

Interestingly, this is the first month since its launch at retail 29 months ago that Wii Play has not been featured in the top 10 list for the month. That's an astonishing record for this industry.

Prototype was the top selling title for the month, realizing roughly 600K units at retail across the two platforms. While this is solid performance for new IP, it's a relatively modest sales figure for any game capturing the top spot for the month.

While some of the decline in retail sales could be a migration on the part of consumers to acquiring content via digital distribution, our reports on downloads and subscriptions reveal that it's not yet having enough impact on the console market to be an overly meaningful factor in the retail down-turn. That said, there are increasing avenues for consumers to game, including via mobile devices, and it's clear the industry is sorting through how to manage all these opportunities while deploying resources appropriately.

Wii Motion Plus sold 169K units in its first month at retail, not counting, of course, those bundled with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10.

Of the various accessory types, Video Game Point and Subscription cards realized an increase of 67% in dollar sales in June '09 as compared to last year.
Nintendo PR Response:
In the United States in June, the Nintendo DS™ and Nintendo DSi™ systems combined to sell more than 766,000 units, more than all current-generation consoles combined, according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. U.S. consumers purchased more than 424,000 Nintendo DSi systems and more than 342,000 Nintendo DS systems in June.

Wii™ marked its 21st consecutive month as the top-selling U.S. home console, with nearly 362,000 sold. Consumers also snapped up nearly 374,000 Wii MotionPlus™ accessories, including nearly 205,000 packaged with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 from Electronic Arts and 169,000 additional accessories sold on their own. The Wii Sports Resort™ game launches July 26 and comes packaged with Wii MotionPlus.

“More consumers continued to gravitate toward products that offer quality experiences and great value for the whole family,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Consumers again selected Nintendo systems for those experiences, particularly our hand-helds.”

Four games published for Nintendo platforms finished in the top 10 best-sellers of June in the United States. These include EA Sports Active at No. 3 with more than 289,000 sold, Wii Fit™ at No. 4 with more than 271,000 sold, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 with Wii MotionPlus at No. 7 with nearly 205,000 sold and Mario Kart™ Wii at No. 8 with more than 202,000 sold.
Sony PR Response:
During the month of June, PS3 moved 164,700 units, with PSP moving 163,500 and PS2 still going strong with 152,700 units moved.

“Coming out of E3, there’s no doubt PlayStation is delivering an unmatched caliber of content for the back half of the year,” commented Patrick Seybold, Senior Director of Corporate Communications & Social Media at SCEA, on the June numbers.

“With positive momentum of PS3 hardware over the past two months, and continued enthusiasm for breakout exclusive games like inFAMOUS, we’re on pace for another tremendous year across our platforms.

“We’re remaining focused on providing great entertainment to consumers and are confident in delivering again on that promise this year.”

inFamous, the PS3 exclusive was once again moving 192,700 copies compared to last month’s 175,900 copies.

PSP moved 63,100 more units compared to last month, with PS3 sales up by 33,700 units, and PS2 up by 35,700 units compared to last month.
Microsoft PR Response:
June NPD - Xbox 360: The Industry’s Sole Bright Spot in 2009 as June Sales Rise 9 Percent Year-Over-Year

June NPD results are in and Xbox 360 highlights include:

•Xbox 360 system sales rose 9 percent year-over-year in June, hitting 241,000 units
•Xbox 360 system sales increased 20 percent in the first half of 2009, making it the only console to show growth this year
•The number of paid downloads over Xbox LIVE in the first half soared 73 percent from a year earlier as the leading online gaming and entertainment service continues to expand

Value drives Xbox 360

Xbox 360 has emerged as an industry bright spot in 2009 as the only home console showing growth in the U.S. so far this year, with sales reaching 241,000 units in June and jumping 20 percent year-over-year in the first six months. Our key to success: value. Featuring a $199 starting price, the biggest line-up of top-rated games, an expansive online experience, Xbox 360 continues to resonate with consumers looking to get more entertainment value for their money. Our announcement of exciting new offerings at E3 such as Facebook, Twitter, streaming music from last.fm, and instant-on1080p HD, has only strengthened the value and experiences on Xbox 360 offers.

Games on Xbox 360

Xbox 360 claimed four of the top 10 console games for June, including “Prototype” from Activision, “Fight Night 4” from Electronic Arts, and “UFC 2009 Undisputed” and “Red Faction: Guerilla.”. Sales of third-party games, a key measure of platform health, totaled $168 million for Xbox 360 in June. In fact, Xbox 360 has led third-party games sales every month in 2009. With a blockbuster line-up of exclusives for the second half of the year that includes “Halo 3: ODST,” “Forza Motorsport 3,” and “Left 4 Dead 2,” and “Splinter Cell Conviction,” Xbox 360 will be home to some of the most anticipated upcoming titles. These titles underscore the fact that Xbox 360 has the most top-rated games of any current-generation console with 150 titles earning a score of 80 or above on Metacritic.

Consumers flock to Xbox LIVE’s entertainment experiences

With an active user base of 20 million people, Xbox LIVE continues to build on its position as the leading online gaming and entertainment service. In the 12 months through June, the number of unique users who downloaded content over Xbox LIVE hit nearly 17 million, and in the first half alone, the number of paid downloads jumped 73 percent year-over-year. In addition to all the downloadable games available on Xbox LIVE Arcade, Xbox LIVE members also enjoy more than 30,000 pieces of entertainment content from more than 65 movie studios and TV networks. Included in this number are the more than 12,000 movies and TV shows streamed through an exclusive partnership with Netflix. Xbox 360 owners also have the ability to instantly extend the life of their favorite titles with Game Add-ons. Moreover, this fall will see the debut of innovative new Xbox LIVE features such as Facebook and Twitter custom-built for the living room, streaming music with Last.fm and party sharing of music and video, a breadth of new experiences that are set to sustain this momentum through 2009 and beyond.

Surprised Wii Play dropped out of the top ten with the Wii console selling 361K units.

And NDS is just unbelievable. Is there a breakdown between DSL and DSi?

Note that 190K is pretty high for the top ten. That leaves room for some decent sellers in the 11-20 spots. It doesn't change the overall indsutry sentiment though.

The only big surprise is UFC continuing to sell so well despite the release of Fight Night. The two month numbers on UFC aren't far off from last year's two month Madden numbers. The Conduit will be a point of discussion once the number is made public, but that number is laughably predictable.

Nintendo's PR might have a breakdown on DSi/DSL split when it hits.

I believe its the first time since Feb 07 when Wii Play launched that it has not been in the top 10.

Infamous also has done with other PS3 late in the month launches (Killzone 2, LBP) have not been able to: exceed their first couple of days with the entire next month.

A pretty good month for EA and THQ. Maybe this year they'll be able to actually make money?

I'm guessing the prospects for a Ghostbusters sequel isn't high right now, I can't imagine Atari will be jumping at the chance to make a sequel with the financial situation they're in when a they didn't have a single version of the game crack the top 10.

It's too bad, I would love to see more Ghostbusters games.

Edit: Looks like Ghostbusters did better then expected, the 3 console versions combined sold 440,000 copies. I now have renewed hope of a sequel
No?

What would EA have anything to do with UFC 2009?
I think he means EA had a chance to get the UFC license, passed on it, and now they want it because of all the sales they're losing and UFC Pres. Dana White told them to f off.

I wonder how many of the M+ units were sold to people who think it will make their existing games more accurate?

The Conduit numbers also lead me to believe that all the complaints about no "hardcore" games on the Wii is from people who like to bitch on the internet about it, and either pirate their Wii games or don't buy them once they come out.

Interesting also is that Sony's customers have shown a strong allegiance to their 1st party titles by sticking with inFAMOUS and outselling Prototype. Guess there was only room for one sandbox superhero game and inFAMOUS was there first.

Prototype PS3 still sold well. No one was expecting Prototype to outsell inFamous on the PS3.

I thought Red Faction did pretty well, surprised It's not on the list.
No Punchout or Conduit sucks. I hope Punchout has good sales legs so one day we can still see another title put out by Nintendo.

Also this is the first I remember not seeing Wii Play in the top 10.

Top 20 added as well as the most extensive data leak we've ever had, everything above 20k on every platform.

Also, PS3 is down year over year for 8 consecutive months now, and will most likely do so until a price drop, even if its a fake drop just to clear old stock.

Awesome combined numbers for BlazBlue considering how niche it is and how late in the month it was released. Glad to see it do so well.
