I'm doing a project for History, and I need to find a song that mentions a historically significant person in the lyrics (Ghandi, Dracula, etc...). If anyone knows of any songs like this, please post the name of the band and song. By the way, I prefer Rock, so it'd be nice if it was in that genre. Thanks!

The Battle of New Orleans

Well, in eighteen and fourteen we took a little trip
along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip.
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans,
And we caught the bloody British near the town of New Orleans.

We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin.
There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago.
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

Well, I see'd Mars Jackson walkin down the street
talkin’ to a pirate by the name of Jean Lafayette [pronounced La-feet]
He gave Jean a drink that he brung from Tennessee
and the pirate said he’d help us drive the British in the sea.

The French said Andrew, you’d better run,
for Packingham’s a comin’ with a bullet in his gun.
Old Hickory said he didn’t give a dang,
he’s gonna whip the britches off of Colonel Packingham.

We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin.
There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago.
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

Well, we looked down the river and we see'd the British come,
and there must have been a hundred of 'em beatin' on the drum.
They stepped so high and they made their bugles ring
while we stood by our cotton bales and didn't say a thing.

Old Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise
if we didn't fire a musket til we looked 'em in the eyes.
We held our fire til we see'd their faces well,
then we opened up with squirrel guns and really gave a yell.

We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin.
There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago.
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

Well, we fired our cannon til the barrel melted down,
so we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round.
We filled his head with cannon balls and powdered his behind,
and when they tetched the powder off, the gator lost his mind.

We’ll march back home but we’ll never be content
till we make Old Hickory the people’s President.
And every time we think about the bacon and the beans,
we’ll think about the fun we had way down in New Orleans.

We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin,
But there wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago.
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

Well, they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go.
They ran so fast the hounds couldn't catch 'em
down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin.
But there wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago.
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

Best song to use:
They Might Be Giants - James K. Polk
The song summarizes his entire role as the most underappreciated president.
Also try Meet James Ensor by thes ame band, a song about a Belgian artist.
We didn't start the fire. Billy Joel
Wow I was just thinking this, if you're doing a historical project this is the perfect song for that.
We didn't start the fire. Billy Joel
I'm surprised it took that many posts to get to this song. It's like the ultimate "Here's some history" songs.

The problem is that it's a shitty song.

I don't want to hear any knocking on Billy Joel. He's the man.

Aw, you beat me to it.

In 1844, the Democrats were split
The three nominees for the presidential candidate
Were Martin Van Buren, a former president and an abolitionist
James Buchanan, a moderate
Louis Cass, a general and expansionist
From Nashville came a dark horse riding up
He was James K. Polk, Napoleon of the Stump

Austere, severe, he held few people dear
His oratory filled his foes with fear
The factions soon agreed
He's just the man we need
To bring about victory
Fulfill our manifest destiny
And annex the land the Mexicans command
And when the votes were cast the winner was
Mister James K. Polk, Napoleon of the Stump

Wow, no one's mentioned Sympathy for the Devil. Also try any Rage song. I know they have one song that mentions Jackie O.

THere was a Paul McCartney song... Let THem In? I'd be just as happy never hearing it ever again but here's the lyrics:

Someone's knockin' at the door
Somebody's ringin' the bell
Someone's knockin' at the door
Somebody's ringin' the bell
Do me a favor,
Open the door and let 'em in
ooh, ooh
Someone's knockin' at the door
Somebody's ringin' the bell
Someone's knockin' at the door
Somebody's ringin' the bell
Do me a favor,
Open the door and let 'em in
ooh, ooh
Sister Suzie, brother John,
Martin Luther, Phil And Don,
Brother Michael, Auntie Gin,
Open the door and let 'em in.
Right now
Sister Suzie, brother John,
Martin Luther, Phil And Don,
Brother Michael, Auntie Gin,
Open the door and let 'em in.
Right now
Someone's knockin' at the door
Somebody's ringin' the bell

The Clarks - Born Too Late Lyrics

Vincent will you teach me how to paint
Teresa will I ever be a saint
John I really think your songs are great
I was born too late

William will you teach me how to write
Cassius will you show me how to fight
Thomas A. I think I see the light
I was born tonight

I've had a hard time leaving this town
I've been losing everything that I've found
I'm gonna search the sky, kiss the ground
Build it up and tear it back down

I've had a hard time leaving this place
I've been counting all the lines on my face
I'm gonna curse the sky, hit the ground
What goes up comes tumbling down

Jimi show me how you play that thing
Elvis will I ever be a king
and Jerry all the joy and love you bring
I was born to sing

Martin Luther King show me the way
Jesus Buddha teach me how to pray
Christopher I think I see the bay
I was born today

Look a few posts up ;)
I noticed immediately, but the posts came in too fast :(

EDIT: to actually be helpful, if you want to go the controversial route, look into any 80's punk/hardcore.

Lot's of opinions about Reagan

Rage Against the Machine - Tire Me (Jackie Onassis)

How about Queen's "Killer Queen?" Marie Antoinette would work.

"American Pie" would work well too, even though a lot of the mentions there are allusions and not using the names directly.

Nelson Mandela - The Specials

Free Nelson Mandela
Free, Free, Free, Nelson Mandela
Free Nelson Mandela
Twenty-one years in captivity
His shoes too small to fit his feet
His body abused but his mind is still free
Are you so blind that you cannot see

I say Free Nelson Mandela
I'm begging you
Free Nelson Mandela

He pleaded the causes of the ANC
Only one man in a large army
Are you so blind that you cannot see
Are you so deaf that you cannot hear his plea

Free Nelson Mandela
I'm begging you Free Nelson Mandela

Twenty-one years in captivity
Are you so blind that you cannot see
Are you so deaf that you cannot hear
Are you so dumb that you cannot speak

I say Free Nelson Mandela
I'm begging you
Oh free Nelson Mandela, free
Nelson Mandela I'm begging you
begging you Please free Nelson Mandela
free Nelson Mandela
I'm telling you, you've got to free Nelson Mandela

Tim Curry of Rocky Horror fame had an album featuring this song with many famous 20th Century folks mentioned, some of them still alive at the time and some of them not.

Edith Sitwell giving readings

Osbert's giving champagne parties
Sachie's got a cold

If you want some old school historical figures...
The Smiths-Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now (Caligula)
Pixies-Dead (Bathsheba & Uriah, from the Bible)

Edit-Also, the Beastie Boys reference all kinds of people in their songs

Also...if Hollywood figures are okay, "Science Fiction Double Feature" would be a good choice. Lots of actors there.

The Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies version blows the original out of the water, by the way. :)

No specific songs but some general suggestions:

RATM
80's punk/hardocre
60's and 70's protest music

And I really like Karmapolice's suggestion  is this for a class that you could get away with doing something....errr.... a bit controversial?

The Vapors (Turning Japanese) had a a song about the Rev. Jim Jones, cult leader of the Guyana Jonestown mass suicide. I believe the title was 'Jimmy Jones' but all my CDs are in storage and Google is failing me on this one.

"Pride" by U2 is about Martin Luther King Jr, although it doesn't mention him by name.

"Magnificent Seven" by the Clash lists several -- Richard Nixon, Gandhi, Plato and Socrates, etc.

"Waterloo" by ABBA references Napoleon.

How loose is your definition of historical significance? "Empty Garden" by Elton John is about John Lennon. And "You Were Right" by Badly Drawn Boy mentions John Lennon's death. Similarly, "Mr Jones" by Counting Crows mentions Bob Dylan. I think you could reasonably argue that both Lennon and Dylan affected Vietnam-era antiwar sentiments, particularly Dylan, and

"Mr Churchill Says" by the Kinks mentions [Winston] Churchill.

"Bigmouth Strikes Again" by the Smiths mentions Joan of Arc.

"Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others", also the Smiths, mentions Antony and Cleopatra.

"The Death of Ferdinand de Saussure" by Magnetic Fields mentions, of course, Saussure.

And, yeah, as a last resort, there's an inexhaustable supply of songs about Jesus. Your teacher is not going to have the balls to tell you that's not an acceptable historical figure.

How many do you need?

Canadian Neil Young has always had a massive bug up his ass about anyone in the Oval Office for the last forty years. Plenty of reference from him and as part of CSN&Y.

On 'The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking' Roger Waters had a song in which he got pretty nasty about Reagan and Thatcher. He was one of those people convince that WWIII could only be averted by appeasing the Soviets. His most recent quotes indicate he still hasn't got a clue, even after staging 'The Wall' at the site of the Berlin Wall.

Speaking of 'The Wall,' it makes frequent reference to WWII. A song that appears in the movie but not the album, 'When the Tigers Broke Free,' is specifically about the battle where his father was killed.

Ian Hunter's Silver Needles is a tribute to Sid Vicious.

You're just a stranger in the past
Just another mug that could never last
You came up slow but you burned out fast (didn't ya)

Oh growing up was your sole excuse
Your body was tight but your head was so lose
I guess I could have told you but what's the use

It ain't Silver Needles on the run
No it ain't Silver Needles on the run
It ain't Silver Needles on the run
Shh you make me feel so bad

You thought you was the only one that got messed up
Me 'n all the others never had it so rough
Well how come you're dead and I'm still stood up

Well it ain't Silver Needles on the run
Silver Needles on the run
No it ain't Silver Needles on the run
Oh I remember....

All your plans were made on some PR floor
'N all your bags were packed, they never reached the door.
Out ordering (?) your thought exchange
All your brains were acting strange
You never lied in dreams before
There must be more to life than getting sore

(What do you think?)

I seen in some music paper that you was gone
And I went right out and wrote you a farewell song
Boy, they had you dead before you was born
And it's a shame - you were such a great mover

But it ain't Silver Needles on the run
No it ain't Silver Needles on the run
Silver Needles on the run
Silver Needles on the run
Silver Needles on the run
Silver Needles on the run

I didn't feel like reading all the posts, so if this has been suggested, disregard. The song is Cult of Personality by Living Colour. It mentions Stalin, Kennedy, Mussolini, and Ghandi.
It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine) by REM.
HummahummahummahummaLEONARDBURNSTEIN!

Also, ""Hey Sandy" by Polaris (the theme to Pete and Pete) is about a real college student who was shot during a protest. Not all that famous, but a historical figure all the same.

Immortal Technique revolutionary vol 2. I don't know which songs though, and the only one named I can think of off the top of my head is malcolm x. Basically, he's a far left rapper, often getting into conspiracy theories (ignore them). The guy has a brain, college educated and all, but a little wacko in his beliefs. Either way, he sometimes mentions historical people, as well as current famous events and people (sharon, rumsfeld, 9/11, columbine, drug trade, jenin, mumia abu jamal even appeared on the opening to one of his songs). Though you should really listen to peruvian cocaine, it's about the drug trade and all the harm it causes south american countries and the streets in the u.s. The guy is a great rapper though, regardless of politics.
