Laptop WiFi Card and Router

I just recently received a used laptop from a friend. It's not the fastest, but it'll do for college. The only thing is that it needs a WiFi card.

Any good deals on a good WiFi card out there? Are they all universal, or are there certain ones for certain laptops?

Also, I'm looking for a wireless router for home. Any deals? Preferably in-store, but online deals would work.
