LEGO Deals 3

^ really? I didn't notice that, I just got the coupon in the mail yesterday. Is there somewhere on the coupon where it says what it can't be used for? I was planning to use it on the palace cinema.

Well if you can't use the coupon on exclusives why would I ever shop at the always-msrp lego store? Ordering online saves me the hassle of driving there.

I realize I'm not their target customer but excluding exclusives is lame.

I went to Wal-Mart yesterday and found many sets at 30% off. I only bought Hulk Helicarrier Escape for 35, I don't like the set because it's kind of barren, but really wanted the big Hulk. There was the Star Wars Droid escape and the Geonosis Cannon for 13 each, LOTR Unexpected Gathering for 50, the LOTR Goblin battle for 70 & Attack of Wargs for 35. I was spoiled by the Target clearance a month ago when I found a lot of stuff I wanted for 50% off so the prices felt expensive even though they were at 30% off.
I actually found Hulk for 50% off at mine. Only thing clearanced, and only one left.

I agree, I thought the whole point of those coupons were to get you into the stores to buy exclusives that never go on sale. You might as well just wait and see if Amazon has it for a random 7% off thing, saves on time and hassle.

Palace Cinema is excluded since it is 10000+ set number/exclusive; plus I saw it on the exclusion list.

Well the 10% coupon isn't as good as it once was. This month they decided to add exclusions to the coupon. Pretty much any 10000+ set i.e. the exclusives are excluded. Wish I knew ahead of time before driving all the way to the store. The empIoyee showed me the list. I still ended up buying the Ewok set without it. :whistle2:(
So double points next month is now the best time to buy lego store exclusives? I want to get that lotr tower.

A buddy of mine asked me about this the other day and I had no idea until someone on another board said they saw the exclusion list within the past couple days too. The coupon does have a line that reads "Lego Store reserves the right to exclude other items". I am betting that as more people hear about or experience this Lego is going to hear about it. I have collected many, non-Lego, lines and when I started collecting Lego I was blown away by the superior customer service and overall general decision making they made especially compared to Hasbro and Mattel. Overall they are miles ahead of anyone else as far as customer service but their decision making has been questionable, at best, within the last year or two - exclusives, mini fig case assortments and now the non-advertised coupon exclusions. Does sound like a lot, and I am not one to complain, but when they set the bar so high we come to expect the best. Maybe its our fault for being so spoiled?

Black Friday is still the best day for exclusives. They do a scratch off ticket that gives 10-50% off, you just have to wade through the crowds. This Xmas my son wants the Tower so I am going Black Friday and hope for 30-50% off but accept 10%.

From what I read, the Black Friday coupons won't work on these sets either.

I didn't want to quote all of this, but I still quoted most because I heartily agree with it.

Lego is still miles beyond Hasbro and others. I can't tell you what an ordeal it is to deal with Hasbro and their lame decisions and spotty distribution. In comparison, Lego is a dream.

And yeah, this last year has had some annoying decisions by Lego. The coupon exclusions are a bit frustrating, as I used the last coupon I had on the Palace Cinema. Having a coupon would induce me to buy either Orthanc or the Ewok Village. Now I'm in no rush.

But...and here's the but...I'm glad I don't have to go through a big ordeal to get either one of them. If I want them, I can go get them tomorrow. If you are saying "so what" right now, you have no idea what some other products are like.

I'd still rather go to the Lego store than give any money to TRU, for instance.

And, I just got the mail and there's the catalog and coupon.

In very tiny print it says : Discount may not apply to Exclusives, LEGO Mindstorms and Lego Hard to Find items.  See a Brick Specialist for details.

What the hell?  "may not apply"?  Does that mean it may, at some stores?  Is it on a store-by-store basis?

Looking through the catalog, the coupon should still apply to Architecture Studio and Arkham Asylum.

And what is a "Hard to find" item?  They say it on the website, but not in a store.  It's really silly, might as well just not print the coupons anymore.

This combined with my local store not letting me feel up the minifigure bags means I have no real reason to go there anymore other than looking or hoping they have some clearanced sets not available online. Also, I hope it's okay that I throw this out there... If you shop at lego.com and click through fatwallet.com (you can sign up here http://www.fatwallet.com/?referral=turnertemp), you get 2.5% cash back on fatwallet. You can then cash that out directly to PayPal. I do get a bonus if you sign up through me, that's why I'm not sure if its allowed or not. Either way if your going to buy online you should be using fatwallet anyway. They also have 2% back at best buy and 3% back on certain categories on amazon. They ocasionally have the toy category on amazon so if they don't charge you sales tax it makes amazon that much better.

Oh wow, really?

When I went to my local store, they asked me if I needed one of the inserts inside the minifigure bag to help me feel up the figures. I didn't need one, but they had given them to other interested people, including kids. I even chatted with the employee who rang me up, who was curious what I was looking for. She needed the grandma.

They've been totally fine with people feeling up the figures before, too, even people who aren't terribly neat about it.

I'm thinking I'm going to try the coupon at my local store and see what I can get with it.

It's as if some corporate bean counter said "Whoa the coupons are mostly used on the expensive exclusive sets. Gotta stop that."

I definitely agree with previous posters who said it could be worse. Lego has put out some great stuff and it's a great time to be an afol. Still annoying though cause the coupon was going to be my motivation for the ewok village.

In all fairness what coupon hasn't been abused at one point or another. I'm sure there were a lot of people who were getting multiples. It sucks since Lego rarely discounts and some of their sets are overpriced to begin with.

I read that earlier on BBC, way to go Lego! Target acquired, time to beat Mattel. How vested is Lego in their movie coming out? I'm curious to see if it's going to bomb or not. From the trailer it looks fun and entertaining, I'm definitely taking my daughter to go watch it.

I'm sure people have seen them, but what are your thoughts on the light brix brand they have going on? My daughter looked at them and didn't really care for them like the Barbie ones, she still prefer the Friends theme.

They could have made the coupons a one time per VIP account, at least that way people don't get the points.

LEGO has 17 sets and the next series of minifigures based on the movie, they are in full steam ahead. Hasbo is around me and after they somewhat rightfully sued LEGO back in 2000ish, and rumours of them buying LEGO shortly after I find it even more awesome.

From a brinklink post (BrickLink Discussion Forum - Message 755191)

Hello and Good Afternoon folks,

I hope this message finds you all well. I understand there has been a bit of
chatter and discussion around the community in regards to a recent change in
qualifying items that may be purchased with a discount via LEGO Brand Retail
Stores. I have reached out to my colleagues within LEGO Brand Retail as well
as other business partners within the company to investigate this further. I
can confirm with you all today that a new restriction has, in fact, been placed
upon items that may be purchased with a discount through LEGO Brand Retail as
well as LEGO Shop-at-Home. This new rule applies to any and all discount opportunities
that are currently operating. These are the areas that affect the AFOL community:

· LBR LUG Showcase Program

· AFOL Appreciation Shopping Day

· New LBR Store Opening Volunteer Opportunities

· LBR Master Model Building Event Volunteer Opportunities

· LBR Large Scaled Store Event Volunteer Opportunities

As of July 1st, the following “exclusive” items are no longer available to be
purchased at a discount, with no exceptions:

10188 Death Star™
10197 Fire Brigade
10211 Grand Emporium
10214 Tower Bridge
10218 Pet Shop
10221 Super Star Destroyer
10220 Volkswagen T1 Camper Van
10223 Kingdoms Joust
10224 Town Hall
10225 SW R2D2
10226 Sopwith Camel
10228 Haunted House
10229 Winter Village Cottage
10233 Horizon Express
10937 Batman™: Arkham Asylum Breakout
10232 Palace Cinema
10240 Red Five X-Wing Starfighter™
10237 The Tower of Orthanc
10234 Sydney Opera House™
10236 Ewok™ Village
10235 Winter Village Market
31313 MINDSTORMS 2013
21050 Architecture Studio

I understand that this will likely be met with great disappointment and concern.
I assure you this decision was not made lightly and at an extremely high level
within our organization. I would appreciate your help in passing along this information
to your respective LUGs to ensure everyone is adequately prepared before participating
in one of the above mentioned discount opportunities. Please note this new restriction
ONLY applies to North America, more specifically the United States and Canada.

I have already passed along my feedback concerning this change as the community
representative for North America to the appropriate individuals. Thank you for
your continued time and support.

Regards,

LEGO

A lot of those modulars I bought I did so using the catalog coupons, guess I should be grateful I was able to. I had been planning to use the coupon for the winter village market set but I guess that won't be happening.
Honestly I think a lot of folks would be a lot less upset if Lego gave everyone a head up in advance. This probably won't hurt their bottom line very much as a lot of these items are store exclusives but I imagine a lot of people will just wait for them to go on sale on Amazon where a lot of them are also available.

I'm sure people have seen them, but what are your thoughts on the light brix brand they have going on? My daughter looked at them and didn't really care for them like the Barbie ones, she still prefer the Friends theme.
Yeah my kids aren't interested in the non-Lego brands either. A friend of theirs has the Light Brix stuff and not only are they big and bulky compared to Lego bricks, but it's hard to appreciate the light effects in a well lit room. The Barbie and Hello Kitty sets from Mega Blocks suffer from the same issues that all Mega Blocks sets suffer from, in my opinion: too much stuff is pre-built. My kids just don't like them.

More disapointing news, from FBTB

The second wave of 2013 LSW planets are no longer launching in the US. They will be available in other global countries, however. As you know, some markets carry slightly different collections depending on their market dynamics, so the strategic decision was made not to launch them in the US.
Idea - they could offer these as S@H exclusives otherwise it looks like we're gonna have to resort to ebay, bricklink, etc. I only picked the planet sets up here and there, on clearance, sale or whatever caught my eye but I was actually looking forward to this last wave.

Yeah it's really starting to piss me off that people in Europe bitch and moan about ow the USA gets things for cheaper (because of taxes) and a little earlier when the USA gets fucked over on Advent Calendars, LEGo Games, the UK exclusive CMF and now the planet sets.  Just make them available online for an exclusive Black Friday weekend and put a limit of two per planet.

El Rey, that deals more with the fact that LUGs (Lego User Groups) were getting REALLY nice discounts a lot of the time, they would get deals on bulk pieces and buying dozens of one set.  Which I support them getting rid of.

Right, hopwever it also directly relates to what the 10% off catalog coupon will not work for anymore. this has been verified on other forums, people who have seen the list in stores and/or been turned down when trying to use the coupon for those items.

The pirate ambush set was still 30% off at my local target at 10:30 AM but sometime between then and now it dropped to 70% off lol

Damn you Target!

Much to my surprise, was able to pick up the last Pirate Ship at my local Target for 70% off.  A very nice occurrence to counter the disappointment about my now useless 10% off coupon :)

So when can we expect to start picking up the Lone Ranger sets at 75% off? ;-)
Already happened in the annual summer toy clearance at Target, where were you? I got all but the stagecoach at 70% off (plus Target redcard bonus 5% off that 30% price), so just about 75% off. Stagecoach was the only set I never found on clearance at any Target.

Also got some others that dropped to 70% off this week as others noted: LOTR/Hobbit Pirate Ship Ambush for $29.98, the Black Gate $17.48, MF Ghost Train $23.98. Oh yeah and the last of the Helm's Deeps at $35.98 at any locations in SoCal. Too bad no Hobbit Shire Gathering or Hulk Helicarrier Breakout clearances this round at any Targets I checked.

Has the LOTR orc forge ever been on sale at target? I think I should probably pick it up before it's gone...

This last winter post-Christmas toy clearance it was part of the clearance at various Targets 70% off at best.

The "good" Target has about half of a shelf on an aisle of LEGO mixed it with other building stuff.  It's sad.

They did have the return of MEGA Stuffed Oeros!!!!  :)

Are you all scanning with the Targets price scanners, apps or something else? I only see Lego clearances when they put them at the end of the isles...

I type in the dpci at the scanners.

I gave up on waiting for Walmart to drop the clearance any lower and picked up Weathertop for $40. It's been over a month and the prices haven't changed.

I saw lego friends series 3 pets at my local Target. Still no Halloween polybags yet...

Is the Pirate Ship 70% off at all Targets now?
No, target clearance is YMMV

Walmart doesn't do any tiered markdown like Target so the clearance price you see is going to be the only markdown at Walmart.

What are the Halloween polybags supposed to be?

Wait, do you all just scan random sets? Use the app and it locates sets on clearance? What is this "magic" you speak of?
Instead of scanning the sets you type the DPCI at the Target location you are at to see the price of the item. Prices are store specific and drops are ymmv, too put it more perspective it's hit or miss.

FWIW, I didn't see LOTR or MF on clearance here.  They were just on sale.  So if you got 'em cheap, good for you.  But if they were on clearance here, they vanished quickly.

Third go-round today to find a sax player.  Went to TRU.  There were two boxes already pilfered.  They had a waitress and grandma, but no tikis and no sax players.  Grrr.

I was hoping they would eventually do the extra 50% off.

Darn the coupon is the main reason I go to the Lego store.  I usually use it to grab one of the big town sets.  By the time I leave the place with all the little stuff I've grabbed as well and some pick a brick I've usually spent 200-300ish.  No reason to go back there now.

Are the sax players hard to find? I just blindly grabbed a few when I saw them and ended up with a sax player.
The distribution per box is

  • 6 each of Yeti, Mountain Climber, Welder, Constable
  • 4 each of Elf, Scientist, Robot, Evil Mech
  • 2 each of Tiki, Bavarian Lady, Waitress, Sax Player, Grandma, and Scarecrow

I fully approve of 6 Yetis as they are awesome. The Welder is also awesome, though not 6 per box awesome.

The 2-per-box figures are a bit frustrating. I can kind of see the Bavarian Lady and Waitress being limited in number. (For the record, the Waitress is really well designed, but I could see it not topping most people's lists) But the others are pretty distinctive. Everyone, it seems, wants a Tiki Warrior when they see his picture (and I can't blame them). The Scarecrow is also great.

The Sax player is not amazingly awesome (well, he is pretty neat), but he is a musician, so many people are going to want multiples. So of course they made him 2 per box. Thanks a bunch.

And this is one of the things that bugs. My list o' stuff I want from Lego is in the hundreds of dollars. Ewok Village, Orthanc, UCS X-Wing, Winter crap. I'm the kind of addicted customer they want, and I will buy things from them if they give me a reason, even a flimsy one like an exclusive polybag or VIP points. But now they can't pop for 10% off one of those, now that they've beaten Hasbro and have rising profits? I routinely turn up my nose at 25% discounts at most other retailers. I've been much less picky with the Lego store, but now they're the ones being picky.

It's already influenced one of my decisions. I was on the fence with the Opera House, and now it's off my list. Maybe I'll see it on AWD, but now I have zero reason to buy it at the Lego Store. Their exclusions cost them a $300+ sale.

It's funny, because the 10% doesn't really matter. I'm spending in the hundreds of dollars. $20 off Orthanc or the X-Wing is a drop in the bucket. But it got me in the store, and it got me spending the money at their store. It gave me some small comfort that dropping hundreds of dollars on plastic bricks wasn't totally insane.

I just hope that now they've beaten Hasbro they don't start becoming them.

Huh. Well, I bought three at random and ended up with Elf, Waitress, and Sax Player. So I suppose I lucked out a bit. The waitress is indeed awesome.

I'll definitely be searching for Tiki, Scarecrow, and Yeti.

This post is me in a nutshell.

I'm telling you man, for some reason none of the sets seemed to go on clearance around here (SF Bay Area). Granted, I don't hunt like I used to, but the thing is, all those clearanced sets were full price at the few Targets I now frequent. In most cases, they're all still in stock, so they couldn't have been clearanced at those stores. Oh well, not my year for LEGO ;-)

Wait, do you all just scan random sets? Use the app and it locates sets on clearance? What is this "magic" you speak of?
What app are you talking about? If only it were so easy as using some app to locate clearance sets. No, I generally make my own lists of sets (or video games, or other items I am interested in...along with their DPCIs) on clearance at various targets when the clearance cycle begins, and compare them to what's reported online. Then I check at the various stores I encounter in my travels.

I was at K-Mart and saw some Lego Star Wars sets clearanced... the A-Wing, the X-Wing with Yavin and a Republic one (Striker-class) I think. One of them was $44.99 marked down to $43, the rest of the cheaper ones just had the 99 cents dropped off (so $22.99 to $22.00). Then for the real discount, there was 20% off. Oh and one random smaller Lego City set that was $11.99 to $11 (sorry, forget which one).

Looking at amazon, none of them seem to be discounted a whole lot but I figured I'd share.
