You can be fine with less, but don't count on it.

You don't need an HDMI video card. You just need a card with DVI and HDCP....
that's correct, the 8500 and 8600 are great cards for HTPCs. they have a special chip to do HD decoding that the 8800 series is lacking, and using the 8500 or 8600 should significantly reduce the load on your cpu compared to one (or any other card).
