looking for a tape recorder for acting class

You can get them at Office Depot or someplace similar for as little as $10-$15. It won't be digital but it's cheap. I'm sure Radio Shack or Target has the same thing.
I've done some acting myself and I discovered that my laptop had a built in mic that was good enough for my purposes. I have an iBook but any Mac laptop from the past few years will have one. I don't know how much theatre you intend to do, but you'll quickly see that the whole theatre industry is pretty much run on Macs.
