I grew up in that time too. I paid 100 bucks for my copy of Phantasy Star IV; I think my copy of Strider was 90.
But this is no longer the era of cartridges with expensive chips and no way to update after release. Updates/Patches to games that rebalance, or add new content or play modes happen all the time in current gen games. Not to mention DLC that keeps games new, fresh and fun a year or more after release (hi Borderlands, Fallout)
There is no reason for Capcom to stay mired in the past, when they could probably make more money selling DLC as well as a GOTY or updated disc. (see RE 5 Gold)
It's cool if you thought it was worth it, but as a CAG to the core, and with 800+ other games in my collection, the additions they made to SSFIV did not seem worth my money, or my time. At 50% off, it turns into a real prospect for me though, since that is what I would have paid for DLC if they had chosen to release it that way.
What in the world does buying Phantasy Star and Strider have anything to do with Street Fighter? Just cause they're expensive? This isn't the argument you're contributing to. Capcom has ALWAYS released updated versions of Street Fighter. SF II has countless reiterations. Same for SFIII. If anyone was surprised when this game was announced, then they seriously have not been playing Street Fighter very long.
I don't understand the mentality of people who seriously think that Super Street Fighter IV could have been DLC. The new characters ALONE should justify the new game. Not to mention the new levels, themes, character balancing tweaks, new moves/ultras, and the new online modes. If you really had preferred Capcom to nickel and dime you every single feature, you'd probably be paying way more than the $40 this game retailed at. Not to mention the ridiculous amounts of storage space that would require.
RE5 Gold is a poor example. There are no changes made to the main game. Everything you're getting in Gold (and DLC) are additions which are separate from the main game. (Such a crappy game, btw) The DLC that does carry over to SSFIV from vanilla SFIV are the costumes because they are cosmetic changes that don't change the main game.
I paid $20 for SSFIV on day one because of Amazon credit, but the fact that its price was $40 was still more than a great deal for the sheer amount of content that's in the game. Again, if someone feels that $40 for the stuff that's in SSFIV was too much, then they're clearly not big fighting game fans.
-True CAG to the core with 800+ hours of Street Fighter playtime.
PS
This is a great deal for an incredible game.
