I would say fps, racing games, and adventure/2d games

RTS and RPG's men it all depends

Flight simulator's, turn based RTS, and civ building games are my least favorite

The list I post was solid then but I would take my time and go through the list. Also if you subscribe to the post and select instant email notification you will receive emails of each post and you can then look at the games as I post.

Racing - Upshift Striker Racer, Drift City and Trackmania are a must.

RTS - I would add Glest. RPGs...well I have decided not to play anymore RPGs as of late as they take up too much time but each one that I did post came from great sources (friends and family that like them) and they are usually not off.

In Vivid Conceptions you play the role of the last surviving Bantam on earth, who is a creature that predated even the dinosaurs but could barely fit on the tip of a needle. It's your job to journey across the underground in search of the last refuge on the planet...

Along the way you will be able to upgrade your Bantam, from creating a shield to thwart enemies to using cerebral control that will allow you to move objects where you need them to go. You will even be able to asexually reproduce, and control the offspring that can do even more than the older Bantam.

Bantams are also able to dream with amazing accuracy, almost as if they're training in their sleep for the reality they awake in. And you'll get to control them in that as well, which include increasingly harder and harder platforming bits.

An opulent, mysterious, and perilous fortress is the setting as Bruce Lee seeks to claim infinite wealth and the secret of immortality from the wizard who dwells within.

You begin your search for the wizard at the entrance to his fortress. This chamber, and each chamber here, is sealed off from the other rooms. The only way to get from one room to the adjoining room is to jump up and take the lanterns which hang from the ceiling.

Wild Metal Country

Simulation/Vehicular Combat
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

We proudly bring you this second installment in our series of complimentary full PC game downloads. Another vintage title from Rockstar North, then known as DMA Design, Wild Metal (1999) is a 3D strategic vehicular combat game set in a distant land, in which you command armed roving vehicles to disrupt dangerous automated military units that have overtaken the Tehric planetary system. While it flew under the mainstream radar when it was originally released, it was critically acclaimed for its unique yet intuitive control schemes and its massive open world to explore. We do hope you enjoy it.

This rare gem from early Rockstar history has now been optimized for play on modern PCs.

Megazell's Comment - Rockstar has changed their policy concerning their free games. The games are still free but you have to leave information about yourself...then you will receive a download link for the game. Word is they are also working on a DD service similar to STEAM and Battlenet.

Theme: Weird

In this Japanese 1 or 2 player fighting game called Super Cosplay War Ultra (SCWU) the fighters turn into different characters from anime movies, TV shows and video games with each attack. There are 33 characters plus some hidden ones and 16 scenarios.

Installation Note:
After the zip file is downloaded and extracted, you have a file called "SCWUFINALv02.exe". When you execute this file it requests a password. The password to enter is a URL, "http://www.fkdigital.net" (without the quotes).

Megazell's Comment - This would be a top pick if I could read Japanese or if there was an English version. The game is fun and has a lot of pop culture reference built into the characters moves and maps.

Megazell's Comment - 2nd comment - I have upgraded this game to top pick. With gamepad support already built in the game is really a snap to get up and running. On top of this despite the lack of English the game content is just spell binding. A must play!

Megazell's Comment - 3rd comment - The game has now been upgraded. I will be reviewing the latest version and posting it up as a seperate game since the title and much of the original game has changed. The primary link leads to the new game as the author has taken down the links to the original. The 2nd link I posted below leads to the original game.

I don't mind that old feeling. In fact, I embrace it. Theme: Science Fiction

GENETOS is a vertical shooter with an "evolution" theme. In GENETOS, the levels represent different generations in the evolution of shmups.

In the first level you start out with a Space Invaders-like game. In the 2nd level, you move into late-eighties-style world. The 3rd level is more standard. You get bombs and more firepower. And the 4th level is bullet hell!

In GENETOS, Weapons of your ship varies with your playing style. For example, you move forward aggressively in the game, you'll get a short range and highly powerful blade. Or you bump into an bullet many times, you'll acquire the ability to slow down the bullet speed.

Megazell's Comment - Man...this game is like gold. Brings together all of the great aspects of every SHUMP (shoot'em ups) without being too cluttered. The game is a treat for those into these types of games. If you are not into shooters...this would be the one I highly recommend you try.

Never have I played a game like Super Cosplay Wars Ultra....

I was a Power Rangers cosplayer...fighting an Evangelion cosplayer... in a subway filled with security guards and Michael Jackson doing the dance from Smooth Criminal...

btw, I know it's a Power Rangers cosplay and not a Super Sentai cosplay, because the character himself is an ameican named Alex... right down to the red tank top with a white star on it.

Did I mention I love this game?!

Bullets of a Revolver tells the story of Raymond Walker and Marguerite Roberts, two bandits from the Wild West looking for a legendary Golden Cave located somewhere on the outskirts of Bolton City.

Troubles and enemies await for them on the journey they will go to find the legendary Golden Cave. Join them on this adventure and fight against 10 different characters in Story Mode.

The Arcade Mode offers one-on-one battle against all characters. Challenge a friend in versus mode, playing on the same keyboard or using gamepads.

Megazell's Comment - Great game. The story mode is excellent and quite challenging...especially the bonus stages. The only draw back is that the screen is stuck in such a small size. Had it not had that little issue it would be a top pick.

Urban Terror is a realism based total conversion mod for Quake III Arena which no longer requires this game to be played. It only uses its engine, which is open sourced through the GPL and may be distributed freely. Urban Terror plays in about the same setting as Counter Strike, but is less focused on realism and plays much faster, which among other things, is caused by the ability to strafe jump, which combined with wall jumping can lead to very quick movement and nice jumps. Urban Terror has 7 game modes, 25 maps and 15 weapons.

What games would you recommend for 1-2 hours of 4 player gaming? Me and some buddies are trying to set up some each week to play and rather than go through the hassle of all buying the same game I figure we'd give some of these a try.

Now we don't have the best computers and are not into any particular type of game (RTS, FPS, etc. are all fine) we are just looking for some games we could play a few hours every week - what would your top 5 be?

Thanks in advance.

That's the sort of gaming I do with my family and friends online. We pick a free game or a game we already have and just meet up every Wed or Sun and rock that game.

1) First Person Shooter - Nexuiz

Classic Quake Gameplay, UT Weapons and Combots with great visuals that are good on just about any computer out after 2000.

2) Savage 2

This game has a whole lot of genres mixed in but the game play and visuals are outstanding. One of your friends can be in the RTS chair while the rest of you play in third person and take on another team.

3) MMORPG - Dungeon and Dragons Online

MMORPG in the classic sense...you guys can all start from lvl 1 on the same server...meet up and kick fantasy as you level up and trade loot amoungst yourselves...Unlike other MMOs if you guys all pick different classes each one will have a affect on everyone else's gameplay.

4) RTS - Rise and Fall: Civilzations At War

Solid RTS with your ability to control of heroes in your army and then play the game in a Third Person Action format.

5) Fighting - Street Fighter Online

You can play 2 vs 2...The fifth person may be left out but I think there is a 3 vs 3 mode too.

Hope that helps.

Ah, this is perfect and a great mix of stuff. Thanks. And to clarify I meant there was four of us total so even streetfighter works out perfect.

Just a suggestion for your thread, but your OP could be updated to include an alphabetical listing by genre with pointers to the actual post. Otherwise, the thread will eventually over time be cumbersome to navigate and locate games. Make sure to spoiler each listing, else that too will be an eyesore when people only want select genre(s). It's a pretty big undertaking, but keeps the thread healthy and active.

Sokoban 4k is a 4,096 byte-remake of the classic block pushing game, featuring all fifty levels from the glorious-looking CGA release by Spectrum Holobyte. To reduce the size of the file, the fantastic intro and floor selection screen have both been omitted from this 4k version. You can't save your progress either, but a level skip option is included to help players access whichever stage they would like to try solving. - Indiegames.com

Seven Minutes
Megazell's Top Pick

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes

Netbook Friendly

Theme: Weird

Seven Minutes is puzzling platform game that can be challenging at times. You haven't beaten the game unless you have seen the credits. The game has an interesting plot that makes you think. What would you do with your last seven minutes?

This game was made in one week for Cactus' Winter Competition and it was inspired by Cactus' games, mainly psychosomatic.

This game also contains some flashy imagery so epileptics should be warned.

Megazell's Comment - This game has a SIMPLE design but trust me...It will freak you out...oh and the challenge...it's in there! LOL

The War Engine

Turn Based Strategy
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Military

If you build it, they will play... The War Engine is the ultimate table top war game simulation and replication kit. Limited only by your imagination, all units, weapons and terrain are fully configurable in artwork and stats. Ready made worlds range from sci-fi to fantasy to space to World War 2.

Megazell's Comment - This 'game' won't be for everyone. For those that are into board games or turn based strategy...this is great. I use to make mods way back when. This game feels like you are making a mod yet you are really making a game from scratch without much hassle. Good find for the desktop generals among us.
