Download Incomplete

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Science Fiction

The data in sector No.0x23F0 has been corrupted. To fix the data, all missing bytes must be found.

Download Incomplete is a traditional platformer, in which you must use your jetpack to collect bytes, while avoiding enemies. All the bytes in each level must be collected to move onto the next. The slight twist is that each new level is just an expanded version of the first. If you die, whether it be from accidentally coming into contact with an enemy or falling off the screen, you will be sent back to where you first began. This means that you will have to venture further out in different directions in each level.

The game has a slick aesthetic, however towards the end, hunting down every last byte starts to become a grind. - Indiegames.com

By the Power of Money

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Fantasy

By the Power of Money is a 2D platformer that encourages players to rebuild a stage as they play, buying and laying blocks with unique properties while trying to keep their spending budget under control. You start a level with 5000 credits in hand, and a certain amount is subtracted from that total whenever you decide to place a block in an empty area. Players are not allowed to replace existing tiles with one from their inventory, and you are always expected to beat a stage using just the five types of blocks available for that level.

The brown blocks are standard tiles that can be used to create platforms or bridges, and there are slightly cheaper versions of them in two other colours. Only one green block can be placed on the screen at any time, and the white blocks with numbers on them indicates how long they will stay around before vanishing into thin air. Purple blocks will start to move in the direction of their arrows when used, and the orange ones change direction whenever they bump into something.

Players who do well can earn up to five stars per stage, although getting a perfect completion doesn't really reward you with anything else other than the satisfaction of a personal achievement. - IndieGames.com

What an awesome friggin thread.

So, we in the US can't play Black Prophecy yet correct? It looks amazing and I have really been wanting a space combat game. What is my next best option for a similar game with good graphics?

I would try Allegiance. It's not one the same level as BP for graphics but it's completely F2P (no cash shops) and the world/universe is massive with lots of friendly plays to assist you on the learning curve.

Shooter/Arena
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

Oshiyoseru is a single-screen arena shooter with slight RPG elements, where the money gained from defeated enemies can be used to upgrade your ship's maneuverability, speed and weapon configuration. Collecting gold (the yellow squares) increases your ship's level gauge, and once that bar is full you will earn a couple of upgrade points to use on improvements to your ship.

I can't read Japanese, but through trial and error I do know that the first two upgrades deal with bullet speed and spread. Players can choose to upgrade their ship evenly in all departments, or spend all of their points on a single feature (which will end up costing more). - IndieGames.com

Megazell's Top Pick

First Person Shooter
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction
Theme: Horror

System Shock is a first-person action role-playing game developed by Looking Glass Technologies and published by Origin Systems. Released in 1994, the game is set aboard the fictional Citadel Station in a cyberpunk vision of 2072. Assuming the role of a nameless hacker, the player attempts to hinder the plans of a malevolent artificial intelligence.

Unlike other first-person games of the time, System Shock features true 3D environments, and allows the player to look up and down, duck, jump, and lean to the side. Critics praised System Shock and hailed it as a major innovation in its genre. It was later placed on multiple hall of fame lists. The game was a moderate commercial success, with sales exceeding 170,000 copies. A sequel, System Shock 2, was released by Looking Glass Studios and off-shoot developer Irrational Games in 1999; the 2000 game Deus Ex and the 2007 game BioShock are spiritual successors to the two games.

Megazell's Comment - This game has been around for awhile as Freeware. Awhile back I posted it and then took it down since the legality of it has not been clear. Then it was featured in "PC Gamers: 20 Free PC Games you must play". If you notice in the comment section, the legality was address by others and myself as well. So for now it looks like this is OK. Lewis Denby has been contributing to their free games section and I will be following any developments of whether this game is cool to continue on this list. If not it will be taken off.

MSPA stories exist in the format of "mock games", specifically text-based adventure games. You advance through the pages of the story by clicking links which sound like commands you would type in a text prompt to get a character to do something. Generally, the character will respond to that command on the following page.

MSPA stories are largely "reader-driven", in the sense that most of the text commands were supplied by readers through a suggestion box. I would select a command from the list, and then illustrate the result of the command.

When I say "largely reader driven", I mean this approach has undergone a lot of evolution from adventure to adventure, and continues to even now.

Photopia is a piece of literature by Adam Cadre rendered in the form of interactive fiction, and written in Inform. It is regarded as a pioneer in narrative-driven, rather than puzzle- or challenge-driven, interactive fiction. It won first place in the 1998 Interactive Fiction Competition.

Emily Short has described the game as "hugely influential" and "ground-breaking."

Photopia has few puzzles and a linear structure, allowing the player no way to alter the eventual conclusion but maintaining the illusion of non-linearity. This gives weight to some of the story's motifs—questions of free will and determinism.

The Wager

Theme: Colonization

The Wager is a Colonization-style exploration game that first saw light as a Ludum Dare submission last year, but has since been updated with new content before being re-released just a few days ago. Sir Marwood is an arrogant man who thinks little of your seafaring skills, so he challenges you to a treasure hunt expedition that will send the both of you to the furthest corners of the map. Whoever gathers the most gold pieces after twelve months will be declared the winner.

Everything in the game occurs in turns, and special events may happen regardless of whether you're on land or at sea. Food has to be replenished often, you need at least one crew member to help you man your ship, and Mr. Marwood is somehow always keeping a watchful eye on your progress. You can replenish your food supply and hire more men back at port, plus the shopkeeper is also keen on buying any maps of new islands that you may have charted during your adventures.

Any extra cash earned can be spent on ship upgrades as well. Newly-colonized islands may also be willing to sell you food supplies for a price should you need any. - IndieGames.com

[/QUOTE]

The full game is free. You can choose to purchase a copy of it or not. The purchased copy has a full puzzle editor available with it.

There are several games on this list that are free or available for a purchase by your choice ($12.99 not $20). Sometimes with or without something different.

In any case, since I have yet to complete the game fully (perhaps it stops and tells you it needs a payment?) I emailed the developer for clarification. This game was featured on several other freeware websites also.

Edit - Already got a response - "Temple of Tangram" is 100% Freeware - "Temple of Tangram Deluxe" is not - Enjoy.

Samurai MK2

Theme: Fantasy

Samurai is a unique fighting game based on a balance of Wisdom (Strategy) and Speed (Reaction). All the worlds ultramega-class fighters have been gathered in a hotel somewhere in the north-west of England, 13 miles north of Manchester, near Huddersfield. However due to problems with the postal service only a number of invitations arrived, thus explaining the 24 characters in this game.

Samurai is a perfect game for; having a few minutes of fun on, solving quarrels over land usage, deciding who will win the world cup, selecting a bride and so forth.

The game has 2 game modes;

*Wisdom (Strategy)… The player takes turns in a battle, the player has a list of moves he/she can perform.
*Speed (Reaction)… Hand/eye co-ordination is the key here. When the Flashy Sign (c) appears the player must hit the attack or defend key.

You begin with only 3 fighters, but by beating the game over receives more characters.

Shores of Hazeron

Simulation/Space
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

Shores of Hazeron is a multiplayer game of interstellar war and science fiction adventure.

The Shores of Hazeron game universe is presented to the player in three-dimensional first-person perspective. Sizes and distances are scaled dramatically from reality whenever necessary for tolerable game play and limitations of computers. In other words it doesn't really take years to travel to another star, there are hundreds of stars in the sky at night instead of millions, and the nearby planets, moons, and suns appear huge and close in the sky with the unaided eye. Each player perceives the universe as if they were seeing and hearing it with their own eyes and ears. Players experience the game universe first-hand as if they were there in person.

A large number of players participate simultaneously in the game via Internet. Players interact with each other directly and indirectly when playing the game. There are facilities in the game to help players locate and join their friends, to communicate with each other, and to rescue players from difficult situations. There is no option to play the game solitaire, though there is plenty of space to be alone.

Players join together to form empires. Empires are expanded by exploring and developing new solar systems and by conquering the solar systems developed by others. Empires are formed, conquer, and are conquered in a continuous struggle for dominance of the galaxy.

Players develop empires by building cities. Cities are built by constructing industries and roads. Roads expand the reach of a city; industries are built next to its roads. As cities grow, a population of citizens grows with them. Citizens construct buildings, manufacture commodities, and otherwise perform the everyday jobs of the city. While building the homes and industries of a city, players must manage the challenges of a growing population, morale and unemployment.

The game economy is based on commodities, such as stone, grain, wood, coal, etc. Industries manufacture commodities. Cities interconnect to trade commodities. Commodities are used to construct buildings and to manufacture other commodities, Commodities are also used to manufacture vehicles such as boats, aircraft, tanks, APCs, spacecraft, and all equipment used by players.

Spacecraft play a central role in the game. Spacecraft are designed by players in the game environment. The rooms of a spacecraft are "painted" into a grid that can be lowered and raised for decks below and above. The game creates a fully functional three dimensional model of a spacecraft from the design. Players earn in-game commissions when their spacecraft designs are manufactured, encouraging skilled spacecraft architects to share their designs with others. Once manufactured, spacecraft are used to explore the galaxy and to combat other spacecraft.

Unexplored worlds, interstellar wars and the politics of galactic empires form a rich environment for science fiction story telling. Contributing authors provide intriguing and thought-provoking storylines that progress with the participation of players. Set against the wartorn backdrop of Hazeron, stories unfurl with the players filling the roles of the main characters.

There are countless combinations in Hazeron for the layouts and contents of sectors and solar systems, the terrain and weather of planets and moons, the DNA of plants and animals, the designs of starships, and the machinations of clever players. Three dimensional representations of plants and animals are synthesized from compact DNA data, not pregenerated models. With over 300 trillion times a trillion combinations of plant DNA and over 80 thousand trillion times a trillion times a trillion combinations of animal DNA, no two planets in Hazeron are likely to have the same plants and animals. Hazeron presents an exceptionally vast and varied galaxy for players to explore and conquer.

It all began one day after school, walking home me and a buddy saw some kids trying to catch some chickens they accidentally let out. We helped out and a year later my girlfriend said this would be a fun game, low and behold! It was! Shikun even scooped a 9/10 rating on Gamehippo.com which is nice.

The aim of Shikun is to catch chickens using 1 of 13 characters, each with their own stats that affect the game type, be it either a strategy or action way of playing. There are 6 worlds, each with their own obstacles stuff. There are 3 difficulty settings, a secret minigame and very secret game mode completely different to the regular way of catching chickens.

TIME TO SHOW SOME BALLS! This is Night of the Testicle, a comedy sequel to Day of the Testicle. I've made this game for fun, to celebrate 10 years of AGS. It should not be taken too seriously!

You play Lefty McBollock - a young testicle who lives in a city under threat from a mysterious enemy! Who is trying to make his life hell, what crappy puzzles will he need to solve to save the day - and is it all just a load of bollocks?

Explore the galaxy! Jump from planet to planet! Pick all the balls... and escape from evils ghosts!

Ballman Planets is an addictive and extremely fun tribute to the classic Pacman game!

Of course, there are balls, power ups and ghosts... each of them with different characteristics and behaviour (check out the lovely blind green-ghost!), but also there are many different planets and cool springs that allow you to jump from one planet to another!

With its innovative fully mouse-controlled action and stunning 3D maps (also available in 3D anaglyph mode if you have glasses!) Ballman Planets won the RetroAccion 2010 contest (a Pacman-style based game competition).

Grief

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Fantasy

Grief is a puzzle platformer that features twenty levels to play through, where the gimmick revolves around using special platforms to switch between light and dark worlds. The objective of the game is basically to collect the teddy bear found in every stage before guiding the young girl to the exit, although you can still complete the game without retrieving all of her lost toys.

The area layout will change slightly whenever you switch between the two worlds, and you'll either be able to jump higher or crawl under tight spaces depending on the current state of the level as well. Later on there will be boxes to push, ghosts to avoid and black orbs with special properties to gather.

Before you proceed to play Grief, it should be noted that the developers have purposely left out a progress save feature from their game. Be prepared to spend at least an hour or two beating all of the levels, since you'll have to start all over again from the first area if you quit halfway through. - IndieGames.com

Haven & Hearth

MMORPG
Single Player - No
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

Haven & Hearth is a MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game) set in a fictional world loosely inspired by Slavic and Germanic myth and legend. The game sets itself apart from other games in the genre in its aim to provide players with an interactive, affectable and mutable game world, which can be permanently and fundamentally changed and affected through actions undertaken by the players. Our fundamental goal with Haven & Hearth is to create a game in which player choices have permanent and/or lasting effects and, thus, providing said players with a meaningful and fun gaming experience.

Players start the game surrounded by a vast and somewhat unforgiving wilderness, with only the most basic tools of survival at their disposal. The use of fire is a thematic focal point of the game's mythos, and an early and important task will be the simple lighting of one. As the first hearth fires disperse the darkness of the surrounding wilderness, more pressing questions will present themselves to the players: Who are they? Where are they? And, most importantly, where are they going? From this point on, players will have to blaze trails of their own into the unknown, the wilderness and the future, and explore and affect the world of Haven & Hearth using only their own best judgment and a chipped stone axe. Trust us, the stone axe is the shit.

As players progress, they will be able to acquire new skills and abilities, allowing them to perform a variety of tasks—such as the claiming of land, the construction of buildings and the cultivation of crops—each step forward making the basic task of survival somewhat easier. Having progressed far enough, players will, in time, be able to organize themselves into societies, from simple tribes and villages, progressing through republics, nation states and, ultimately, empires.

At least, those are our lofty ambitions.

World of Text

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Other

The concept is simple; a giant, communal wall for people to graffiti. The reality is this completely mental assortment of ASCII art and nonsensical phrases, butchered by an errant delete key, or enhanced by someone’s twisted mannerisms. And then of course you have the half finished arguments, the childish abuse, and the seas of lols.

The other clever thing is that the standard world isn’t the only one. If you add anything to the end of the url, you can create your own World of Text, who’s security is derived by the fact that you need to know that specific url to access it. I like to imagine that this is how spies communicate, leaving cryptic messages on some obscure World of Text url, only to sign it with an ASCII wang. - PCGamer.com

Tower Commodore RTS

Real Time Strategy
Single Player - No
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

This is a full feature rts game.

It has individual unit control, base building, map editor, 60 fps animations, support for lan and internet gameplay, very good AI (the computer is not that easy to beat), hiscores based on the skill of ALL the players involved (with the exception of the observers).

The strategy is also refined as well as the balance and counters of the units. The game also has an in-game music player (you put your wavs in the MUSIC folder). I've included some new game mechanics. One last thing: every unit is unique. You'll not see one unit with the same variables but with different values. If you're looking for a fast-paced rts, with flexible strategy, large armies to command, and new game mechanics, then you should really try this one.
