Mixing GC controller and Classic controller for mp

I have a wavebird controller and just got a classic controller but I can't get them working for Mario Kart 64. The classic controller and my wavebird both keeps controlling the first player. Anyone know what I need to do to get both controllers working?

Plug the Wavebird into controller port 2

Have you tried switching the Wavebird around on various controller ports?

Also, do you have another Wiimote? You could theoretically turn on two Wiimotes and have one signal itself as the second player, and then attached the classic controller to it. That should work.

Interesting problem though.

thanks, switching the wavebird to the second 2nd controller port did it.
