Movies you saw as a kid that you saw later and your opinion changed

That movie with Russell Crowe and Guy Pierce, or Guy Ritchie.

Saw it when I was 12, bought it at Walmart for $3, and loved the hell out of it.

Ferris Bueller got better as I got older. I finally understood why he was such a... brat.

Robocop went down for me. As a kid I thought it was cool that a cyborg was a cop. And then I saw Peter Weller's other movie, Buckaroo Banzai and the Adventures in the 8th Dimension...

PENNYWISE

clear your mind hide your fear
don't look around
don't turn around
pennywise is here
evil lurks in his eyes
the clown they call pennywise
he's a monster
he's not human
he's more than just a figment of your imagination
you can't run can't hide
there's no way to escape pennywise
he'll creep inside your soul at night
and torment nice and slow
don't turn around or look around
pennywise will know
he'll make you wish that you were dead
and make it hard to cope
he'll make you wish that you were dead
and hanging by a rope
*puts on flame shield* Scarface. It is good but not great!
Blasphemy! Though its not better than Goodfellas or Casino. Too many parts drag in the film(I'm a huge fan but can accept its flaws).

I am another person who loved monster squad however I have not watched it as an adult yet. "All your sister does is hang around and let guys touch her tits." Kick him in the nards! Kick him in the nards! Wolfman doesn't have nards! Just DO IT *kick* Wolfman has nards!

Secret of the Ooze owned Super Shredder and Ninja rap!

Yea after seeing something like "Repossessed", The Exorcist just is not that terrifying.

He-man Masters of the Universe - Wow just wow this movie is so bad I feel bad I dragged my mom to this many years ago.

Garbage Pail Kids - See above

No Holds Barred - Damn Hogan can't act lol

Overboard - Goldie is a looker but I always liked Russell in more bad ass roles!

Short Circuit - I loved it as a kid doesn't hold up too well. Oh well at least it seems Wall-e was based on Johnny 5.

Ernest Goes to series - Loved these as a kid but don't find Varney's antics that hilarious anymore.

Caddyshack 2 - They used to play this all the time and I loved it then I saw Caddyshack and that stopped. Thankfully, I didn't make the same mistake with Raiders and Ghostbusters.

Flame shield? I'd rather shake your hand for spreading the truth. Godfather FTW!

The monster on the wing of the plane in The Twilight Zone movie scared the bejeezus out of me when I was a kid, to the point where I did not want to look out the window of planes if I was flying at night well into adulthood. Now when I watch it the idea creeps me out, but the actual creature is just sort of silly.

I also was pretty freaked out by these plant like creatures in The Beastmaster that wrapped people up and then a few moments later all that was left were green slimy bones. Saw it again a few years back and I was unimpressed.

The Monster Squad on the other hand, I still like that one quite a bit, although I was relatively shocked when I let my daughter watch it and they were throwing around an anti-gay slur like it was nothing. But I guess it's more real that way, as most kids are total pricks to each other...

I like this thread alot. The movie that I couldn't understand (english accents) or get many of the jokes as a kid was Monty Pythons the Holy Grail , now it is one of my favorites.

Not really. 'Silent Running' starring Bruce Dern ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067756/ ) and a set of squat robots named Huey, Dewey, and Lewey who spoke in beeps in whistles. These were direct ancestors of R2-D2 and homages to them appear in the Star Wars movies, which had some of same people doing design work and some of the same amputee operators.

The spaceship designer and animator who created Silent Running's ships later worked on the original 'Battlestar Galactica' and reused his models there. The recent BSG series paid homage by including versions of the bio-dome ships.

Although it has some serious plot holes, Silent Running is a very influential movie and this can be seen in many aspects of WALL-E.

lol i totally forgot about beastmaster man that film was cheesy but at the time very cool kind of a low rent conan. that one scene after they change the guy into a monster or some shit by putting that thing in his ear and hes running down the corridor flailing about swinging at anything was kinda scary.

the ear wig scene in wrath of kahn still bugs the shit out of me.

oh yeah there was a kirk douglas film where this robot had a hand for a head at the time that robot was very scary now not so much.

same for that robot maxamillion from the black hole.

Probably Saturn 3, which also had Farrah Fawcett somwhat nekkid. Plus Harvey Keitel being his normal disturbing self.

I bought Surf Ninjas today for the purpose of watching it and posting here, but goddamn, it's still funny. I mean, for completely different reasons, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

You know what, I mentioned Creep Show and was about to edit my post and add in the John Lithgow portion of Twilight Zone: The Movie, no lie. So glad somebody stepped in and mentioned that. I still get creeped out by it. You're right, the monster is silly by modern standards, but it's the setup that causes the scare rather than the moment. Same with The Crate from Creepshow. That kind of directing is a lost art in modern horror movies. It's a damn shame.

And to who mentioned The Beastmaster: No way man, the Beastmaster is always good. It's timeless. Anyone who rags on the Beastmaster I will personally track down and pimpslap.

Is one of the vignettes in the Twilight Zone movie about a mean hermit of sorts who lives in a house out in the middle of nowhere? I remember the man and the house being overtaken by plants or moss or something? Does that sound familiar to anyone? I remember being freaked out by the atmosphere of a scene where the guy is sitting in a chair and he is totally consumed by a thick mat of plant growth.

Weird, my dad brought this movie up to me the other day. He even described it in a very similar fashion. Threw it on my Netflix queue that same day.

Side Note: Epobirs, you are one of this board's best posters. By far. Always bringing it with quality conversation.

I absolutely loved Clash of the Titans when I was a kid but when I went back to it a couple years ago it was tough to get through. Another movie that's not as awesome as it was when I was a kid--although I still actually enjoy it--is Cobra (Stallone as a cop who is, needless to say, not taking any shit from anybody).

I somehow missed Monster Squad when I was a kid. I finally saw it a year or two ago and really disliked it. I think a lot of the 80s comedies, especially the ones aimed at a younger audience, are tough to appreciate now if you don't have a base of nostalgia already there.

And fucking boo to the theater full of people laughing at The Exorcist. That is still one of the most finely constructed horror movies of all time.

Aaaaaaannnd...I know this is total blasphemy, and let me state up front that I'm a big Star Wars fan. But there this is some laughably bad dialogue and acting in the original trilogy. I always get so pissed when people rag on the prequels for the exact same flaws that have always been on full display in ALL Star Wars movies. Not the prequels don't have some massive problems, especially Episode I, but the originals have plenty of their own problems. George Lucas is brilliant at creating a cohesive world and mythology but the man is a piss-poor director.

That's from Creepshow. That hermit is Stephen King.

I remember watching this horror movie in the early 90s where this kid tries to bring back his mom from the dead but summons demons instead. It was pretty fucked up, anybody know what I'm talking about

Even more odd is that Ed Harris was in Creepshow. I don't recall him in anything prior or following, up until he really started appearing in movies more, like The Abyss.

You might be a little confused if it's the movie i'm thinking of. The Gate with Stephen Dorf? Where the hole is in the ground in the backyard and the demons come out of it after another kid uses a satanic rock album to summon the demons?. There's a scene where that same kid interacts with a hallucination of his dead mother.

aw man clash of the titans was and imo still is a great movies. freakin medusa and calabos were scarier than a mofo. i went wild when i found out they got that guy to be in gow2 to reprise his role.

yeah the gate wasnt about bringing back the mom and dad its about a couple of dumbass kids messing around with shit they shouldnt have great film though.

another horror film i rally liked that did still stand the test of time is Night of the Demons. that dance scene to stygmata martyr is still pretty creepy in context and it was one of the few horror films where a black guy lasted to the end and sruvived.

the ghoulies sucks all of them.

and the first 2 howling films are awesome although the second one is kind of basically werewolf porn( not like thats a bad thing lol).
You know what still creeps me out? "The Crate" from Creepshow. Masterful directing.
I still check underneath all basement stairwells for old crates! What an awesome story.

Childs Play....for the same reason I posted as Tales from the Crypt. I'm almost 19 and I still can't watch it all the way through. I did watch the one where he gets married and impregnates a human. Great stuff there.
