I shouldn't be posting something like this when hitting the sack if pretty front and center on my mind, but...

Having Windows 7 being around the corner, I'm pretty tempted to spend the money to pick up an upgrade license/disk from my local University Computer shop to upgrade this PC that I bought about 1.5 years ago. It's currently humming along with a 32bit version of Vista Home Prem, and I'm really thinking about loading my main gaming set up with the 64bit version of Vista 7 Home.

I think I have a free voucher with my second/lappy setup, and thankfully it has Vista Business 64bit, so no question about compatibility there.

Question is: Is there a fairly easy way of knowing, with 100% certainty, that I'm going to sail smoothly if I do a fresh install of win7 home 64bit. I tried the MS beta upgrade adviser, but the report it gave back at me was pretty lacking the details.

This computer has the following:
Acer M5630
Intel E4500 2.2ghz (going to change soon)
3gb dd2 ram (bumping this to a healthy 4gb once I upgrade)
Nvidia 8600GT (a hand-me-down, but this is definately changing to the new ATI 4770, or maybe a GTX 250).

As a side question, who's going to be upgrading to the Windows 7 right off the bat?

I'll probably be getting it off the bat as its been awesome with the RC version for my computer and it should work just as well with the RTM version.

I'll wait for a Windows 7 to release a Service Pack 1 before I even install it. Hell I have access to all of them now in our MSDN library and Technet.

I don't see much reason to wait for an SP, as it's essentially the same as Vista under the hood. You can even use Vista drivers if there are no 7 ones available yet.

7 has run perfectly on every system I've installed it on.

Gawd my first post is peppered with grammatical errors...

What I should really do is install a 64bit RC of Win 7 into my main, but unfortunately I don't have the room to spare.

As coz said, I think there's no reason to wait for an SP too, since there's a large community out there that's putting each and every single RC's through the wringers. I doubt there'll be any zero-day problems with the OS, but I'll keep my ears open for any word on the retail product.
