Ok I dont know really what any of these would be so just list a few. Now I'm not talking your favorites, or the movies you have to see cause they are so bad they are funny. I'm talking movies you have to see, I suppose Pulp Fiction would be on that list, of which I need to see. I'll see the ones I've seen that I think are on the list and you can list the ones you think. If its something that is odd or out of the ordinary add something like - must watch drunk or - comdey somethng like that. Maybe make this a sticky and if so I'll edit this with a list of ones to see and maybe ones to avoid.

Movies I've seen that were listed or I knew would be. (Last Update 11/13.) Is it dead already, its been awhlie...

Fight Club.
Reservoir Dogs.
Office Space.
Saw.
Alien series.
Black Hawk Down.
Jurassic Park.
Spirited Away.
Pulp Fiction.
The Boondock Saints - Surprised by this one I really liked it.
Office Space.

Movies I need to see and I assume or know are must see.

Full metal Jacket.
The Deer Hunter.
12 Monkies.
Memento.
Leon.
The Usual Suspects - I saw the end of this one but I want to see the whole movie.
The Big Lebowski.

I'll break it down into catagories.

Sci-Fi: Aliens Series, Serenity.
Action: The Warriors, Pulp Fiction.
War: Full Metal Jacket, Black Hawk Down.
Drama: 12 Angry Men.
Comedy: Office Space, Anchorman, Ferris Bueller's Day Off. (added an extra to make up for drama)
Horror: Saw, Aliens series. ( :) )
"Must see movies" but hardly any classics listed?
Evil Dead: Army of Darkness. :D
Off the top of my head:

Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas
Is the film based on the book by that fool Hunter S. Thompson? I can't stand him.

O' Brother, Where Art Thou?

Seconded. One of my favourites, and a true classic. I am a Dapper Dan Man. :D
This topic is basically what is your top ten movies of all time.

Saw a "must see"? Give me a break.
I don't watch horror movies, but Saw seems to be a hit, so I added that. Would you care to contribute a 'must-see' horror film?

What the hell is Saw doing on that list? The only reason it's a must see would be if you felt everyone should know what it feels like to want your fucking money back after watching an abomination to cinema.

Good, Bad and the Ugly
Amelie
Memento
Goodfellas
Raging Bull
Seven Samurai
Yojimbo
Pulp Fiction
Schindler's List
Shawshank Redemption
The Deer Hunter
Alien
Rushmore
American History X
The Insider
Fireworks (or Hana-bi)
Leon
Taxi Driver

Silence of the Lambs (best picture anyone?)

The Shining (stanley kubrick, jack nicholson version of course)

These are classic, must see films. Saw is a piece of crap rotting on the sidewalk, that these movies might step in and then scrape off the bottom of their shoe.

But really, the whole point of the horror genre is just to have fun being scared, it's not a genre known for "must see" films.

The Shining I did see, and it wasn't too great. But I read Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and Red Dragon, those were hot stuff.

Just out of curiosity, why does Saw suck so hard? Most people I know liked it, but most of you seem to not. Whyso?

Although, I haven't seen most of them, here is my revised horror list:

The Shining, The Exorcist, The Shining.

Two words:

Danny Glover

The acting in saw was just bad... the only thing positive about the movie worth mentioning is the way the murders make you make you feel uneasy... other than that the movie is utter crap.

The premise was interesting, but the ending is something you can forget in minutes. It wasn't a movie that I would ponder about. Perhaps the movie made money because of the affinity of snuff films. Not to say we're all bad people, but we're curious.

err..

dr strangelove (yee hah)
the toy (richard pryor you fukkin bastids)
silver streak (+ gene wilder)
caddy shack (i guess snl cast before they all died/sucked)
Airplane (comedy?)
A Fistfull of Dollars (genre film...)
lets just say Royal Tenenbaums. Wes Anderson is the only director who gets Criterion releases as he makes movies. fo sheazy

Yes. The film is a work of art, though. Brilliant performance by both Depp and Del Toro. Terry Gilliam is a directoral sage, as well.

I didn't like it.

You probably need to have taken hallucinogens at some point. So they say. :cheese procedure:

I guess that was my problem ... having no way at all to relate to the material.

Cary Elwes was hamming it up (or the director was telling him to) because I felt he was trying to parody his acting in all his parody movies - Robin Hood, Hot Shots, etc.

And Danny Glover seemed like he had a mild case of Alzheimer's. In the words of Det. Murtaugh, "He's gettin' too old for this shit."

With a total disregard for everything after the first post, I must say I've only seen two on that list. Jurassic Park and Office Space.

And whether it's been mentioned or not, I must say Star Wars. If not for the (debatable) greatness of (most of) the movies, it is must-see for the amount of times it is referenced in nearly every venue of pop culture. Heck, tonight I watched an episode of PowerPuff Girls that had a Death Star trench run setting. Earlier today I saw the weirdo Jedi guy from Big Brother on a countdown show.

Star Wars is everywhere.

Mr. Smith goes to washington
Employee of the month
The big lebowski
Shawkshank redemption
The green mile
O brother where art thou?
Office space
Goodfellas
Casino

Did anyone bother to mention the Godfather (& Part II)? Psycho? Raiders of the Lost Ark? 12 Angry Men? Apocalypse Now? Lord of the Rings? Jaws? I could go on...

The question is what defines a "must see movie"? You could view a response in many different lights. Are you looking for something involving more groundbreaking cinematography? Or something that was the most entertaining, something that's obscure and unique, etc.? The point is no matter how many different people you ask you'll always get a different answer. It's rather difficult to create list because of that, someone is always going to say something belongs or doesn't belong and it ends up really just being your list.

Edit: Also I'd recommend an overlooked Spielberg film, Empire of the Sun with a young Christian Bale.

Thanks for reminding me of this movie. Its been forever since I've seen it so I just added it to my blockbuster queue.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Faaaareeeaaaaaaky.

Any Ray Harryhausen Films (Jason and the Argonauts, Clash of the Titans, etc) - stop motion love

The Ten Commandments - awesome cinematograpy, and Charlton Heston!

Night of the Living Dead - intestine eating!

Cemtary Man (Dellamorte, Dellamore) - very interesting twist on a zombie movie

Eraserhead - Some images never go away.

Forbidden Planet -a young Leslie Nielson is classic as a straight character in this classic 50's sci-fi

Earth Vs. the Flying Saucers - Some of my favorite scenes of ufo vs building destruction as the aliens attack DC.

Evil Dead I and II - Bruce fucking Campbell

Must see movies can be must see for any number of reasons!
Ben-Hur. A huge epic that was unheard of at that time. To this day it still amazes me.
those poor horses, man did they get fucked up.

I think I've only seen it mentioned once in here...

If you haven't seen The Green Mile I think you should rush out right now and watch it...I love the movie.

EDIT: Also, I didn't like Ashton Kutcher(sp?) until I saw The Butterfly Effect. I think you should see that movie too.

*POSSIBLE SPOILER*

Though, I thought the ending the main character chose was kinda...not what I wanted him to do!

I imagine a scenario where I've just seen a movie that's been out for a long time (years). I love said movie, and bring it up with a friend. Upon hearing that they saw the movie long ago (and loved it) I become noticeably angry/upset that they never told me about it before. This would have to be a "must see movie".

Empire of the Sun was on my list, though just barely.
What the fuck is wrong with everones list? No one even mentioned the Godfather 1 and 2.
Sadly I've never seen the Godfather, but I should see it soon.
