My original FAT 360 just red ringed - cheapest option for a new system?

My original launch model red ringed years ago, Microsoft fixed it for free and sent me a refurb and this worked fined until the other day.

I don't want or need anything else (cable, controllers, 60GB HDD are all fine). I just want to get a new console (fat, slim, whatever) to hold me over until the launch of the NEXT Xbox.

Is going to Gamestop this weekend (since they are offering double credit, even for red ring systems) and buying a refurb old unit (since it fits my existing HDD) for $140 +$20 2 year warranty, make the most sense?

Wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something obvious here. Thanks :D

your best bets would be craigslist, pawn shops, or cowboom. There's no warranty on those though. Some mom and pop video game stores repair 360s. I got mine done for $30.00 and it lasted a few months.

Your system might still be good though.

try to overheat your xbox. It usually fixes my rrod problems. The first fix usually lasts a few months without breaking down again. The next system comes out in a year so I would do this until then. It should have backwards compatibility.

There are multiple ways to do this:

wrap the 360 in a towel. wait till system powers down.

Place a nail to prevent the fan from spinning. wait till system powers down.

I haven't tried this method but one guy placed his 360 in his freezer for half an hour and it worked after.

Get a new 4GB slim and use your old hard drive. You can put it in if you open the casing on the old hard drive (youtube if you are unsure). You can actually put in the bare drive or get a new hard drive case off ebay for $4. No sense in getting a refurb at this point which will most likely red ring at some point.

Your cheapest route is to call MS up and bitch at them until they give you another free replacement. Tell them that they need to stand behind their products, you've bought tons of games and they sold you a faulty product then sent you another faulty product. When they keep insisting that you will not be able to get a free replacement, yell at them that you spent all that money and they gave you defective shit and you want a goddamn replacement! Worked for me 2 years ago. Then after owning that 2nd refurb for a year, I sold it to some dude on Craigslist and bought a slim.

If you want to buy a new console and you want the cheapest (I can find) is this:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Xbox-360-w-Bonus-Xbox-LIVE-3-Month-Gold-Card/21144168

This bundle was $149.99 on black friday but it's 200 now. :(

Here's an Amazon holiday bundle (was 200 on black friday) if you don't have skyrim or forza yet it could be a good deal:
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-250G...d=1356628483&sr=8-6&keywords=xbox+360+console

Here's a Kinect holiday bundle if you want a Kinect:

If you buy one of the 4GB models, you can take your fat model's HDD apart. You'll need a tool like this:

Then you can buy one of these and put it into it.
