Need help buying a NES

Techman16

CAGiversary!
I have been looking to buy an NES system but really don't want to spend that much. I have been looking around local thrift stores and craigslist, but people tend to overprice them like crazy. Help a brother out

I used to work at a place that sold them for $50 w/ 1 controller and a game. Still over priced. I'd say around $30ish isn't bad as long as it works and is in good shape. Outside of that, there isn't much help to be given.

I am having the same issue. I think its overpriced. But keep in mind, some stores that sell it included a 72 pin replacement, that's like 10 dollars right there and games will work better. If anyone has one available, can sell me too, but sell it to the TC first before me! :)

The 72-pin thing is a joke, IMHO. I clean up and fix NES systems, and of the 25 or so I've done in the past year, I've never replaced the connector. All work just like new when they are properly cleaned. The only time when I can see it being a necessity is if the pins are truly worn out/bent and don't make full contact, but that's a very rare occurrence.

If you just want to play the games and don't particularly care about owning a real NES, you can have a Yobo for $15. Or at least it'll hold you over until you can find a real one.

I really want a real NES, not a knock off. Idk, maybe I start looking on ebay or something.

If you don't care about the aesthetics, you could go with the original top-loader NES. That's where my money is at. They came out as the last gasp of NES manufacturing, maybe that has something to do with the legend that they work near-flawlessly (which is my experience with owning a top-loader as well), just be aware that they go for a lot more money than the standard ones. I'm probably wasting my energies here since it sounds like you're hellbent on the original model, but I thought you'd be interested in another tip.

I really do want a top loader, I just don't want to spend $70-80 on just the top loader console, a controller and the wires. I figure to just go with the cheaper alternative (the original NES) for now and eventually work my way up to getting a top loader. Thanks for the input though.

The good people on the buy/sell/trade forum of NintendoAge.com should be able to help you out, can get some games while you're at it. Ebay is usually just as bad with overpricing, but I've lucked out and gotten some cheap before. I'll second cleaning your 72-pin connector instead of getting a replacement. They're usually not necessary and can be too tight, adding extra wear to your carts. I'd also avoid third-party AC adapters as some get hot, or cause interference. I don't recommend knock offs either since they're inaccurate and sometimes even incompatible with some games.

If you want a top loader, you want a generic 1. I couldn't ever stand how those things looked:whistle2:#. Nothing will replace the original NES.

But, here are some cheap, generic ones...

Those cheap generic ones have issues with certain games...

Not with the way they copyright and trademark the living crap out of things today. Though, in a few years or sooner you'll start seeing N64 clones.
