Basically something on par with Fido, Dead Alive, Hatchet, and I guess the recent Grindhouse movie from Tarintino/Rodrieguiz for a gift for a friend. The more obscure or basically something that the average movie goer wouldn't know, the better.

All of these are must see. In fact you may have already seen them.
Some of these are not so much comedy as they are just tongue-in-cheek, doesn't-take-itself-seriously horror, like Hatchet.

Dance of the Dead

Ginger Snaps

Dog Soldiers (tongue-in-cheek)

Feast

Slither

Black Sheep (tongue-in-cheek)

The Signal (actually is three mini-movies, only one is supposed to be comedy, it's hard to explain)

Frankenhooker. (title says enough)
Basketcase (i think thats the name, the twin brothers with the monster named belial) there were a few sequels also

All that comes to mind right now

Can't go wrong with the Evil Dead movies...and Army of Darkness... Bruce Campbell is a master in these kinds of movies. Are those too main stream?

While not really in the gore category, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is a pretty interesting mockumentary with the crew following someone aspiring to be a horror monster (ie Jason, Mike Myers, Freddy Kreuger). Definitely has its moments and it's really well put together.

Feast and Feast 2----completely off the wall over the top gore and very funny. The way they incorporate some horror cliches is hilarious.

I gotta agree with Return of the Living Dead (just the original though). Undead is a good one. Of course Shaun of the Dead. An oldie but a goodie is An American Werewolf in London.

Michele Sovai's best film and one of my most favorite movies ever.

I recommend Frank Hennenlotter's Brain Damage.

I can also second Frank Hennenlotter's Franken Hooker and Fred Olen Ray's Texas Chainsaw Hookers if you want some so bad their good flicks. Street Trash is another fun one, but it runs in the so bad its good category as well.

A classic one is Class of Nuke 'em High, it's excellent, don't bother with the sequels though.

Peter Jacksons early films also rank in there including:

Bad Taste
Dead Alive

There's also a Anchor Bay film called Dead & Breakfast that's pretty fun.

Techstar25 has a pretty good list above too, Slither, Dog Soldiers and Feast being particular favs.

Damn, beat me to it. Nothing like telling your friend you are going to watch a movie from the same director as Lord of the Rings and popping that in. "I kick ass for the Lord!" Magic.

Otherwise, anything Troma is good. Or check out "Cannibal! The Musical" from Trey Parker

Seconded.

Also by Hennenlotter is Basket Case, a cult classic.

Love that line.

While certainly not as overtly humorous as Dead Alive, I'd recommend Ravenous. It's dark humor is more subtle but I think it's a great, somewhat quirky horror film that far exceeded my expectations. The downside.... The dvd is non-anamorphic dammit!

I enjoyed American Psycho a lot. Also, for "dark humor" I thought Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was really good. It isn't a horror but for a dark humor it is great.

The Dark Backward- A very dark comedy about about a garbage man who gains fame as a comedian after toxic waste endows him with a third arm. Bill Paxton is great as Judd Nelson's nauseating, exploitative best friend. Keep an eye out for a disgusting scene involving the consumption of the world's nastiest cold chicken.

I gotta go with

Dance of the dead
Feast
Plane Dead ( think snakes on a plane except it's zombies instead of snakes) also known as Flight of the living dead

There is also a cool mini series from the UK called "Dead set" which is great. It's zombies meet Big Brother(the tv show). Very fun if you can track it down someway

I am surprised no one has mentioned In Bruges. It counts as a black comedy and had a limited theatrical release in the U.S. this year. Not at all a horror movie, but still pretty violent. I saw it when it came out, and later so did a couple of my friends--we all love it.
I can't even explain how much this movie dissapointed me.
Really? I thought it was a lot of fun.

Severance and Dead and Breakfast are both available to stream through XBL from Netflix, by the way.
I don't know if it counts, but "Very Bad Things" may be up his alley.
ooh, Very Bad Things. not really horror but very dark with a great ending :p

It's got some star power in it also

Thanks for the responses! Good portion I've seen (I think anyone with the internet knows of Evil Dead), but some I'll keep an eye on.

And how is "Very Bad Things?" I've heard of it, but never really heard of it (meaning just name and that's all).

Street Trash is a CLASSIC as far as I'm concerned. Non subtle gross out humor that's literally shocking, nasty and VERY unPC.

Awesome....!

I saw this on a double bill, along with a gay zombie movie, literally called Otto.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1151384/

Stay the fuck away.....horrid, non provocative but trying SO hard to be.

The second bill was this Dead and Breakfast pile, compared as an American Shaun of the Dead.

Ugh.

Not a HUGE fan of SOTD either....but still...!!!!

No votes for The Toxic Avenger yet... amazing...

Also give consideration to the latter 2 of the Evil Dead trilogy... Feast was very amusing but I still cant get my wife to watch it with me yet...

Someone said "everything Troma" and I agreed. One Troma flick that people tend to overlook is Troma's War. I had a blast watching this film. It's so cheesy.

There are Troma films... and there is the Toxic Avenger... I havent found one that could hold a candle to that despite all their hype over films like Nuke em High, Tromeo and Juliet, Sgt Kabukiman, Tromas Wars (sorry I thought it was unwatchable)... even the sequels to the first Toxie movie are pretty bad
