New PS2 Model I'm confused

TOKYO - Sony Corp. said it plans to launch a lighter version of its PlayStation 2 game console later this month, in a bid to drive sales of the seven-year-old machine heading into the crucial holiday season.The new model, which has a built-in AC adaptor, weighs 720 grams, down from a combined weight of 850 grams for the previous model and its external AC adaptor.
Since the new machine's power cord comes without a bulky AC adaptor, it would be easier for gamers to enjoy the PS2 anywhere at home, Sony's game unit said on Tuesday.

Why would Sony do this with the PS3 just ramping up I know they wanna hit the holiday season well but why not focus on their future system. Do you think this is another way for them to try to take system sells away from the Wii since it more closely competes with that system?

P.S. Sorry for posting this on the PS3 board but it seemed like a valid discussion of the move given it seems to me money better spent on this system instead of one thats getting mostly movie tie in games this point. Plus I don't think that many people look at the PS2 boards anymore >_>.

Um, that article is from 2004 when they first announced the PStwo. I think I read somewhere that the new model will be identical except contain an internal power supply instead of the brick.
 
oddly it was linked on their website this morning which is why I posted it the orginal article from MSNBC was anyway the other I didnt confirm he just demanded pics so there you go pics. Not trying to start crap just discussion apparently thats forbidden here unless its kissing up to the PS3 :/.

The PS2 is still selling well. It's not like Sony hasn't done this before, they released a silver PS2 last year around the same time as the PS3 launch, and I'm pretty sure the redesigned PSOne came out after the PS2 launch.

I don't have a slim black PS2, but it looks like the one side is glossy and the rest is a mat finish, where the older models had a thin line of the glossy plastic towards the opening for the disc tray. There is a new stand that is more in line with the older stands from the original PS2 run.

Jesus Christ. Second, nobody is denying the new PS2, we've known about it for a week now and this is just the official announcement.
 
Referring to the question why Sony would do this the answer is clear, make the PS2 cheaper to make therefore increasing profit. They gotta make money somewhere and is not coming from PS3 hardware anytime soon.

Anyways, can't believe the PS2 is already 7 years old. And it's obvious why they do this, the PS2 is still selling and it will continue selling so this is a way to get more money.

Plus, since they took out the PS2 chips from newer PS3s, this will be the perfect way to trap consumers into buying both systems.
