I think the “new concept” argument is logical.....also DLC doesnt make sense so Nintendo naturally doesnt get it..nor should they. DLC is fn stupid af....it makes it ok for developers to say “hey its ok if the game isnt that playable at launch, hell it might even take a month or two to get the servers just right.....but dont worry kids, after all the bugs are taken care of, we now get to pay more to play a game we already own!! “ hhhaha

Like finish the game. Test it, and retest....then sell it...so no, Nintendo is totally right. They not only aren’t interested in it, they want to discourage the practice by not putting it on sale. It’s either your a die hard fan that’ll pay any price to play, or youre like me and you dislike the concept so much that you pray that there is never a DLC pack on any games i have..... hehe

NINTENDO RULES (their CS is so good, puts MS to shame)

I mean I would accept paying a higher price for the game in order to avoid pays dlc (which is something that would absolutely happen), but I know that opinion isn't universal.

As far as Nintendo and DLC, though, they actually are interested in it. See: BotW, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, every FE game since Awakening, Pokken tournament, Splatoon 2, Captain Toad, Xenoblade Chronicles 2...

Now yes as of 2019 Your right lion heart
With the switch they are not only interested but they are showing a nice new knack for it

I’ll clarify by saying they are putting the old Nintendo seal of quality on DLC, but making us pay for it ... better? Lol

DLC for Nintendo started long before 2019 (and before the Switch).

FE: Awakening, for example, had DLC and was released in 2012. They've been at it for awhile. And Nintendo putting a "seal of quality" is really no different from the process Sony/Microsoft have in place for DLC.

Honestly I think more people just need to understand the root of DLC and why it's continuing to be a thing. The price of a new game has remained largely stagnant for.... about 14 years? Ish? Despite the fact that inflation is a thing and the overall cost of developing a game has increased. So, publishers can either cut costs (either by letting go of staff, or producing games on a lower budget/lower quality), increase the sale price (which is actually stupid complicated because of various contracts/agreements), or.. recoup the cost post-sale by adding new content at a premium price. Nintendo is no stranger to this, which is why their largest games include DLC and have for quite some time.

Basically, if you want the quality of AAA games to remain at or above the current level, would you rather a) Buy the game for $80 outright (the current $60 cost adjusted for inflation from when it was standard to now), or b) Buy the game for $60, with the option to buy more content later?

Personally I like option A. BUT I see the appeal of B, because if I didn't enjoy the game very much I can choose to not pay the additional cost.

I dunno about you, but I tend to buy most games, DLC included if there is any, for under $20. AAA games especially tend to make this pretty easy, releasing DLC-included variants that dip in price significantly within the first year or two.

On a more serious note, I think it’s probably worth considering the difference in audience size for AAA games since $60 first became a standard price.i don’t have figures for that, but regardless of how they compare, it’s a significant factor to consider in terms of determining the prfitability of games before DLC.

A comparison to the movie industry is also probably worth considering. The price of private ownership for movies tends to be much, much lower than for games, despite similar costs. The main difference seems to be that movies focus on charging for one-time viewings, short rentals, and charging various services for the rights to share those movies; while games attempt to make most of their money back on the initial cost of private ownership, and are increasingly focusing on microtransactions. Again, the difference in audience size may also be a significant factor.

It's exceptionally rare for me to buy any game (dlc or otherwise) for $60, especially since GCU at 15/year became a thing. The rare exceptions are for franchises that I've got a pretty strong fandom for - Mostly RPGs (Dragon Quest, Fire Emblem, Zelda to name a few). If I'm sufficiently invested in seeing a series continue, I'll generally grab the game+DLC/season pass pretty early on. Like... well, like Fire Emblem Echoes, or Breath of the Wild. But that's usually only 2 or 3 games a year, if that.

For games that I don't have that fandom, though, yeah - We're talking around the $20 or less price point generally. Games like Shadow of Mordor/Shadow of War, that I do enjoy, but not enough to drop full price on.

Regarding difference in audience size - That's certainly a valid point, but I honestly don't think it's anywhere near enough of a factor to offset the rise we should have seen due to inflation (or the rise in production costs for these games). Keep in mind that the second-hand market for games is also larger than ever (look at how much of Gamestop's annual revenue and profit is from pre-owned, for instance). Gamers are becoming more and more frugal, spending less and less on their new games. So it becomes a matter of if you have 10 people paying $60, or 20 people paying $20 (oversimplifying, but you get the point I'm sure). So there are a lot of factors, and not a ton of visibility because we rarely get a full budgeting breakdown of the game and it's actual revenue.

I think it's interesting to compare it to movies, but at the end of the day they have very different business models. Movies earn the vast majority of their initial revenue off of the box office - Something we can't really do with games (outside of arcade games, which are having a bit of a resurgence, but they have their own issues). Movies get paid through their product placements, box office revenue, licensing deals for private showings, and then once all of that is complete - private ownership purchases. They can charge considerably less because they've already recouped all of the cost of entry.

Games, on the other hand, are very limited - Yes, they can get some revenue through product placements - But it's really obvious and gets them pushback from players (Street Fighter V comes to mind). They can't exactly charge hundreds of thousands (or millions) of players $15 for every few hours of gameplay without being crucified (and/or people just not buying into it) so a counter to box office revenue is out. Licensing for private showings is closest to rental services like Redbox and GameFly, but there's already been copyright cases saying they don't have to pay any kind of licensing fee to the publisher - If they pay the retail price of the game, they can rent it as they see fit. It was even challenged in court and found in favor of the renting business.

Basically, if you want the quality of AAA games to remain at or above the current level, would you rather a) Buy the game for $80 outright (the current $60 cost adjusted for inflation from when it was standard to now), or b) Buy the game for $60, with the option to buy more content later?

Personally I like option A. BUT I see the appeal of B, because if I didn't enjoy the game very much I can choose to not pay the additional cost.
thats not what i meant

Like i said, Nintendo may finally be getting on board .... but I understand why they weren’t truly invested int he past and why they probably WONT discount DLC ever, their quality is a bit higher than the rest, and they wont be frivolous with charging you for it before they lose that final trust....thats what it is

Oh.

Yeah, I totally disagree on that front, too. For the same reason Nintendo doesn't really put first party titles on sale. And they aren't "finally" getting on board, they've been on board for over 7 years.

It's not because they're of some higher quality than their competitors (they aren't - Nintendo makes solid games, yes, but they aren't outright better). It's because everyone knows Nintendo doesn't put first party content on sale - Something they established long before DLC was a thing. People won't wait for a sale they know won't happen. If Nintendo breaks that streak, people may start holding out for those discounts.

It's just their standard marketing, and has nothing to do with maintaining that "Nintendo Seal of Quality" level and the trust in it. If they really cared about that, we wouldn't have had games like Star Fox Adventures and Devil's Third. Or frivolous DLC for titles like Smash and Fire Emblem (Smash for Wii U and 3DS is particularly ridiculous). At the end of the day, they're out to make money, and they know people will pay the asking price because they have no reason to believe there will ever be a sale.

Most first party Nintendo games get sales and price reductions. Beyond sales, they do the whole Nintendo Selects / Player's Choice thing.. which has been around in some form since the NES days (as that's when I got my copies of The Legend of Zelda and Metroid after another batch of games dropped to $20). On the digital side, they don't do that many sales but then they don't have stock to liquidate and stores to keep happy. Still, WiiU and 3DS games regularly get coupons on My Nintendo and then there's the birthday coupon that goes out which typically goes towards first party games. It's probably only a matter of time before they do this for Switch games... though I'm kind of liking the whole gold coin system to get $$ off of digital purchases. I've gotten a few smaller games for essentially free that way.

Oh wow was Plague Road a stinker. I played it for an hour before I went to bed and it was putting me to sleep. It seems very shallow and slow moving and the battles were not exciting. Do yourself a favor and play real good games like this such as Heroes of Might and Magic or King's Bounty The Legend (on PC). The story was barely there and the recruits you find didn't seem exciting. Graphics are pretty nice though. I will give it that plus. This one is an easy pass. Glad it was heavily discounted.

Saw it on “sale” on xbox for $14... feel sorry for anyone that buys it there.

Sorry, I should have specified on the digital front (I was tying it in with DLC, a primarily digital item, and somehow mentally checked out on physical media).

Nintendo Selects is nice, though. I also wasn't factoring in things like "buying" My Nintendo coupons (redeeming platinum/gold coins are the only ones I've seen excluding the birthday coupon - If there's some other MN offer, please do let me know).

Also a big fan of the new rewards system on switch purchases. I, too, have snagged a few smaller games essentially free that way! I also like that it's much more streamlined than the old rewards system was.

Man I remember StarTropics being an amazing game for it's time! You even had to wet a piece of paper that came with the game to solve a puzzle.

Or you could be like me and just stop playing part way because you buy used and without the manual, it could not be beaten at the time. Lousy stinkin' 80's copy protection...

I had this issue with a lot of PC games. Eric the Unready, one of the D&D games, etc. "What is the fourth word upon the third line on the 12th page of thine instruction manual" Bruh I don't know, I got this at the local rummage sale in a box of other games.

The Front Page Sports Series. Baseball and football. I just got them working in Dosbox and googled the manual to see if anyone uploaded it. The internets came thorugh!

There should be a warning for Overcooked is that it's mostly a test of your friendship or relationship if you play it with people you know and like.

I forgot those games had those type of copy protection. Man, I loved those games. Spent months playing them back in the day.

Good lord! $10 in coins? That is some serious baller shit right there.
First Fortnite's $100,000,000 World Cup Prize Pool, now this

The Battle Royale scene is really heating up

(jokes aside, giving away $10k for a free game where everyone is eligible to win is pretty cool)

My brother and I played baseball and football for YEARS. Those games were soooo ahead of their time.

To be honest, I think they are both quite playable still today.

Renting those games with the manual copy protection....
And they would charge extra for a photocopy of the manual.

At least we had a home office with a copy machine at home.

I am not sure if I am excited about this or not.
VR sounds interesting if they can pull it off but,.... LABO?....
Cheaper than buying a bunch of other hardware...... but LABO...
They will have to prove this to me.
LABO... geeze

PS4 Pro is barely able to pull off VR with a separate piece of hardware and processor.  There is no chance that anything Labo is doing is going to be close to actual "real" VR experiences.

I can already see the blog posts about motion sickness stricken kids puking all over the place because of this low-res, low refresh rate screen strapped to their faces.

I figured that VR was an inevitable thing with the Switch.  Not a high end vr experience .. but more along the lines of the phone vr stuff.   I'm not interested in the labo offerings but maybe this will open the door for some 3rd party to put out a basic plastic headset and devs to throw in the option for VR in some games as a novelty.   For $20, I'd buy a plastic headset vr shell like what you can get for phones.

It just makes me think of the cheap cardboard things you can drop your phone in. I see them all the time at 5Below and Walmart.

Yeah, I think if this was any good, they would have promoted the hell out of it long before now, and had some press events to show it off. The Labo at most of my local shops is about as big as the PS1 Classic, and I never see anyone buying either. My son wants this, as he thinks it's some grand VR experience, and to that end, I guess "N" has reached their target market, so congrats I suppose.

They're not going to be "real" VR experiences because they're Labo one-off showcases. PSVR on PS4 Pro is more than enough for what it offers, as the only limitations are due to external hardware (camera, Moves).

They're not strapped to your face, so you can pull it off if any issues occur.
